Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.

Abstract:The tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al were simulated by molecular dynamics. First, the effect of the content of gamma' strengthening phase on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied at room temperature and constant strain rate. The microstructure evolution of Ni/Ni3Al under the content of gamma' strengthening phase with three typical characteristics was especially investigated. Compared with single crystal Ni, it is found that the gamma' strengthening phase can increase the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al. This is because during the plastic deformation process, as the dislocations continue to multiply, the dislocation density gradually increases, resulting in dislocation plugging, which increases the resistance to dislocation movement, thereby increasing the tensile strength. Secondly, the effect of temperature on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied, and it is found that the tensile strength of Ni/Ni3Al decreases with increasing temperature. This is because as the increasing temperature, the internal kinetic energy of the atom increases, resulting in the more intense thermal motion of the atoms, and the weaker bonding force between the atoms. The atoms leaving the equilibrium position have no time to return to the equilibrium position, and the fcc structures transform into a large number of hcp structures and other atomic arrangements, which cause lattice distortion and reduce tensile strength. Finally, the effect of strain rate on the tensile mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al was studied. The results show that the tensile strength is not sensitive to low strain rate, but sensitive to high strain rate.

Abstract:Simulations have been carried out on [001]-oriented Ni 3 Al nanowires with square cross-section with the purpose to investigate the mechanism of failure under tensile and compressive strain. Simulation results show that the elastic limit of the nanowire is up to about 15% strain with the yield stress of 5.99–6.48 GPa under tensile strain. Under the elastic stage, the deformation is carried mainly through the uniform elongation of the bonds between atoms. With more tensile strain, the slips in the {111} planes occur to accommodate the applied strain at room temperature under tensile strain. And the nanowires accommodate the compressive strain by forming the twins within the nanowires.

Abstract:Interfaces play key roles in determining mechanical properties of materials. In current work we perform molecular dynamics simulations of diffusion bonding to evaluate the effect of temperature on the morphology of the Ni/Al interface and the strength of the diffusion bonded Ni/Al nanowires. The centro-symmetry parameter is adopted to identify defect atoms generated. Simulation results show that the thickness of the Ni/Al interface has strong dependence on the temperature of diffusion bonding. Following uniaxial tension tests indicate that the yield strength of Ni/Al nanowires is smaller than both the single crystalline Ni and Al nanowires, because of the Ni/Al interface acting as dislocation source and the mobilization of pre-existing dislocations at high temperature. It is shown that the mechanical properties of diffusion bonded Ni/Al nanowires strongly depend on the temperature.
Tensile Mechanical Properties of Ni-Based Superalloy of Nanophases Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Abstract:The mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al monocrystal of nanophases with varying temperatures, strain rates, and phase sizes have been studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results show that the primary deformation mechanisms in Ni/Ni3Al monocrystal of nanophases were slip bands and antiphase boundaries at room temperature. The studies on the effects of temperature showed that the yield strain, yield strength, and elastic module decreased as temperature increased. However, the influences of strain rate and phase size on the mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al monocrystal of nanophases showed that the high strain rate led to the increase of yield stress, and the phase sizes had no significant influence on the maximum yield stress. In addition, the behavior of crack propagation in the model of Ni/Ni3Al interface was investigated under cyclic loading, and it was found that the interface of Ni/Ni3Al was resistance to the fatigue crack propagation.

Abstract:Novel properties and applications of multilayered nanowires (MNWs) urge researchers to understand their mechanical behaviors comprehensively. Using the molecular dynamic simulation, tensile behaviors of Ti/Ni MNWs are investigated under a series of layer thickness values (1.31, 2.34, and 7.17 nm) and strain rates ( 1.0 × 10 8 s − 1 ≤ ε . ≤ 5.0 × 10 10 s − 1 ). The results demonstrate that deformation mechanisms of isopachous Ti/Ni MNWs are determined by the layer thickness and strain rate. Four distinct strain rate regions in the tensile process can be discovered, which are small, intermediate, critical, and large strain rate regions. As the strain rate increases, the initial plastic behaviors transform from interface shear (the shortest sample) and grain reorientation (the longest sample) in small strain rate region to amorphization of crystalline structures (all samples) in large strain rate region. Microstructure evolutions reveal that the disparate tensile behaviors are ascribed to the atomic fractions of different structures in small strain rate region, and only related to collapse of crystalline atoms in high strain rate region. A layer thickness-strain rate-dependent mechanism diagram is given to illustrate the couple effect on the plastic deformation mechanisms of the isopachous nanowires. The results also indicate that the modulation ratio significantly affects the tensile properties of unequal Ti/Ni MNWs, but barely affect the plastic deformation mechanisms of the materials. The observations from this work will promote theoretical researches and practical applications of Ti/Ni MNWs.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to understand the microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior of the Ni/Ni3Al interface under thermal-mechanical coupling. The results indicate that the shapes of dislocation networks of the laminated model and the sandwich model are the symmetrical pi-shaped and the symmetrical double-deck pi-shaped respectively. We find that the rod dislocation only exists in the sandwich model. The critical shear stress of laminated model is larger than the sandwich model's. The stress and potential energy of dislocation network are larger than other places in the Ni/Ni3Al interface. Moreover, slip systems of the laminated model and the sandwich model are {(1) over bar 11}(101), {11 (1) over bar}(011), {1 (1) over bar1}((1) over bar 01) and {111}(0 (1) over bar1).

Abstract:In this study, the critical effect of temperature and cross section of Ni3Al precipitate (in the form of nanowire) over the tensile characteristics have been investigated through the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. Because, the Ni3Al precipitate is the major contributing element in nickel–cobalt alloys which is commonly used in intermediate temperature applications and this molecular dynamic simulation is governed by various parameters such as temperature (300 K, 500 K and 700 K) and cross sections (1.76 nm, 2.81 nm and 3.52 nm) under a constant strain rate of 8 × 108/s−1. Through the above study, it is stated that the temperature has a higher influence on the material characteristics followed by the cross section of Ni3Al precipitate. Additionally, it is stated that the structural transformation along with the formation of more partial dislocations are the deciding factor for serrated yielding and fracture behaviour.
Theoretical Calculations of the Ideal Strength of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in Tension and Shear

Abstract:We have applied the first-principles method to Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al to calculate tensile deformation in the [100], [110] and [111] directions and shear deformation in the {111}[11 (2) over bar] and {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions. The tensile and shear stress-strain exhibit a very different anisotropy in consideration of crystallographic directions. The ideal tensile strength (ITS) sigma(max )of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the [100] tensile directions is the largest with the values of 35.63, 35.19 and 38.05 GPa, respectively, followed by the [111] and [110] directions, illuminating that NiAl in this direction is the most difficult to occur tensile fracture and it has the best ductility with a strain of 0.60. The ideal shear strength (ISS) tau(max) of Ni, NiAl and Ni3Al in the {111}[1 (1) over bar0] slip directions is 5.94, 4.55 and 11.35 GPa, respectively, which is larger than that of {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions except NiAl. Furthermore, the tau(max )of NiAl along the {111}[11 (2) over bar] slip directions is 22.15 GPa which is the most difficult to produce cleavage fracture in considered phases and directions. Finally, the evolution of lattice parameters, energy, volume, density of states, Bader charge transfer and difference charge density are investigated to clarify the nature of the bonding and intrinsic yielding mechanism.
Nanotwinning and Tensile Behavior in Cold-Welded High-Entropy-alloy Nanowires

Abstract:Since the fabrication technique for high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanowires/nanopillars is still in its infancy, neither experimental nor modeling analyses of their cold-welding performance have been reported. Based on insights accumulated in our previous experiments and simulations regarding cold-welded metallic nanowires, in this study, the cold-welding performance of HEA nanowires is probed by atomistic simulations. Among different materials, our simulations reveal that extensively twinned structures are formed in CoCrMnFeNi samples, but not in CoCrCuFeNi or Ni samples. The larger fracture strain in certain HEAs is due to the improved ductility around the fracturing area as well as multiple twinning. Unlike in Ni samples, the fracture strains in HEA samples, regardless of being cuboid or cylindrical, are improved by shrinking the sample size. Among different orientations, the [010]-direction monocrystalline nanowires fail at a strain over 0.6, which is almost double that of the [111] direction. The fracture strains in polycrystalline HEA samples are, on average, larger than those in polycrystalline Ni samples. Furthermore, fracture strains in randomly generated polycrystalline HEA samples are more predictable than those in polycrystalline Ni samples with identical grain configurations. As previously reported, dislocation emission is still a prerequisite to fracture in all cold-welded samples.
Temperature Effects on Deformation Substructures and Mechanisms of a Ni-based Single Crystal Superalloy

Abstract:Mechanical behaviors of a Ni-based single crystal superalloy have been investigated by tensile testing at various temperatures. Deformation substructures and mechanisms have been systemically revealed from micrometer to atomic scales by using advanced scanning electron and scanning transmission electron microscopes. Results show that deformation mode of the alloy strongly depends on the temperature due to competitive responses of the gamma and gamma' phases under mechanical loading and their original stress statuses. At temperatures from ambient to 750 degrees C, plasticity is governed by dislocation shearing in both phases, where slip modes of gamma are < 110 >{111} and those of gamma' are < 112 >{111}, < 110 >{111} and < 110 > {001}. At moderate temperatures (850 degrees C <= T <= 900 degrees C), plasticity mainly involves microscopically uniform deformation of both phases. The matrix deforms first so that channels parallel to tensile direction are narrowed due to the Poisson's effect, after that deformation of gamma' follows. The active slip modes are < 110 > {111} for gamma, < 112 >{111}, < 110 >{111}, < 110 >{001}, and < 001 >{001} for gamma'. At temperature higher than 1000 degrees C, plastic strain is also derived from deformation of both phases, but deformation of the matrix plays critical roles, due to relatively weak strength of this phase. The operative slip modes are < 110 > {111} for gamma, but mainly < 110 >{001} and < 001 >{001} for gamma'. Our results clearly provide a comprehensive and multiscale (from micrometer to atomic) understanding on the deformation mechanism of Ni-based superalloys, which can be critically beneficial and offer mechanistic guidelines to design new/next generation superalloys. Abstract:The tensile behaviors of Ti(0 0 0 1)/Ni(1 1 1) multilayered nanowires are investigated by the molecular dynamics. The results indicate modulation structures may affect the mechanical behaviors of the nanowires dramatically, and plastic deformations are determined by surface effect and interface effect. For isochoric nanowires, deformation behaviors transform from interface driving behavior to surface driving behavior with increasing layer thickness, and an optimal layer thickness of 2.34 nm is discovered. At this size, the interface and Ti layer yield simultaneously at the first yield point, the subsequent plastic behavior is mainly determined by interface rotation and shear offset. For the minimum sample size of 1.31 nm, interface rotation and shear offset dominate the plastic deformations. Nevertheless, plastic deformations are related with grain reorientation, phase transformation and dislocations propagation in Ti layer for the sample size is greater than 2.34 nm, while Ni layer deforms elastically all the time. For non-isochoric nanowires, the results depict modulation ratios significantly influence the elastic modulus and yield strength, but rarely affect the plastic behaviors of the nanowires. The results in present work can provide a guidance to design and exploit high performance metallic multilayered materials.

Abstract:Based on uniaxial tensile and compressive creeps, the mechanical properties of the third generation nickel-based single crystal superalloy were studied via the combination of nanoindentation, crystal plasticity theory, and finite element analysis. The Young’s moduli and hardness of γ, γ′ and the topologically close-packed (TCP) phases are related to chemical composition and applied stress. The maximum values of the Von Mises equivalent stress and damage are at the tip of the TCP phase. These values are inversely proportional to the distance to the TCP phase. Furthermore, the rafting of the γ′ phase can be predicted according to the distribution of the TCP phase and stress.

Abstract:In this study, the Ni/Ni 3 Al-based alloys were proposed, and their microstructures were established. Uniaxial tension was performed based on the γ′ phase precipitates of alloys with different shape ratio by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We demonstrate that the crystal distortion induced by the transition from FCC to disordered structure can lead to the reduction of tensile strength. Besides, the structure, temperature, and strain rate effects on the mechanical properties were clarified, and the microscale mechanism was revealed. The results indicated that compared with Ni/Ni 3 Al structure with a γ′ phase precipitate shape ratio of 1:1:1, the tensile strength of the structure with a shape ratio of 1:2:1 is smaller, and the mechanical property–strengthening effect is significantly determined by the structures of the γ′ phase precipitates; besides, there is a clear secondary strengthening in the tensile process of Ni/Ni 3 Al structure with a γ′ phase precipitate shape ratio of 2:1:2 due to the formation of disordered structures. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of the models with different γ′ phase precipitates shape ratios all decrease with the increase of temperature, under the conditions of low strain rate; the tensile strength of the alloys decreases with the decrease of strain rate.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based upon embedded atom method (EAM) potential are employed to study the fracture behavior of Ni single-wall nanotube (m,n) with a linear strand at the center at temperature of 4 K. An (m,n) nanowire consists of m close-packed strands and n defines the chirality. The results reveal that (6,6) structure has the highest yielding stress level and Young's modulus level. At constant close-packed strands m, the Young's modulus of the nanowire increases as the wire radius increases. The (5,5) and (6,6) nanowires fracture suddenly beyond yielding point with little plastic deformation. The (7,4) nanowire shows the highest plasticity among all simulated nanowires for its maximum strain exceeds to 0.27.
Structural stability and mechanical properties of Ni nanowires under different orientation and size

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations based upon embedded-atom-method potential are employed to study the structural stability and mechanical properties of Ni nanowires as a function of radius size along < 001 > < 110 > and < 111 > crystallographic directions. We also construct < 110 > {111} wires whose cross section show diamond shape to make comparison with others. The finding reveals that < 110 > {111} wires exhibit the lowest per atomic energy after full time of relaxation. The mechanical properties of various nanowires are tested by tensile process to determine their elastic module and yield stress versus radius size. Slipping happens in < 001 > wires; Twinning deformation is observed in < 110 > wires; < 111 > wires are transformed to < 110 > wires with increasing of strain during loading process. The elastic module, yield strain as well as yield stress of all wires as a function of radius size are also studied to explore their deformation behaviors.

Abstract:The size dependence of the mechanical properties of Ni/Ni3Al nanowires (NWs) was investigated with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results indicated that the surface energy σ increased, and bulk modulus B and B/G ratio decreased with increasing the inverse of the nanowire perimeter of the NWs. The extrapolated values of surface energy σ0 were 2.100 J/m2 and 1.956 J/m2 for the samples with surface atoms of pure Ni atoms and mixture of Ni and Al atoms, respectively. The size dependence of the bulk modulus was in good agreement with the prediction of the Birch-Murnaghan equation and the surface shell softening the bulk modulus. Finally, the B/G ratio indicated that the ductility/brittleness behaviors of the NWs depended mainly on the energy distributions of the surface shell, and the mechanisms of the ductility/brittleness of the NWs were studied in detail.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and micro structure of single-crystalline Mo nanowires under uniaxial tension are investigated using molecular dynamics(MD) simulations.The results show that dislocations and slips are main mechanisms of the tension deformation of single-crystalline Mo nanowires.When the temperature is increased from 100 K to 500 K,the yield strength and strain decrease,and the fracture strength and strain increase,respectively.The maximum fracture strength is at room temperature(300 K).Furthermore,the structures of the stretched single-crystalline Mo nanowires at 100 K and 300 K have apparent yield deformation and the interior deformation is caused by slips.At 500 K,the structures of the stretched single-crystalline Mo nanowires have no apparent yield deformation,and the atomic arrangement of the interior is irregular and disordered and mixed with a large number of dislocations and slips.

Abstract:Atomistic simulations are used to investigate the mechanical properties of copper nanowires (NWs) along 〈100〉, 〈110〉 and 〈111〉 crystallographic orientations under tensile loading at different temperatures. The inter-atomic interactions are represented by employing embedded-atom potential. To identify the defects evolution and deformation mechanism, a centrosymmetry parameter is defined and implemented in the self-developed program. The simulations show that Cu NWs in different crystallographic orientations behave differently in elongation deformations. The stress–strain responses are followed by a particular discussion on yield mechanism of NWs from the standpoint of dislocation moving. Generally, the study on the incipient plastic deformation will be helpful to further understanding of the mechanical properties of nanomaterials. In addition, the Young’s modulus decreased linearly with the increase of temperature. The crystal structure is less stable at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:In order to research the mechanisms of tensile deformation at nanometer, molecular dynamics (MD) was employed to simulate the tension process of nano-single crystal aluminum (Al) under different temperatures. The results show that the stress–strain curves decrease after a linear increase up to the maximum abruptly because the first transition from elastic to plastic deformation and the slip take place.
