Abstract:A Refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg grating and stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and demonstrated. The cladding modes of the tilted fiber Bragg grating is sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and the approach relies on refractive index dependent resonance wavelength shift of the modes. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is introduced to measure the wavelength shift due to its narrow bandwidth, which enhances the wavelength resolution to 0.25 pm and provides much higher refractive index sensitivity than traditional wavelength readout methods. This kind sensor is suitable to sense a very small variation of refractive index and the sensitivities can reach to a resolution of 1.27 × 10(-4) RIU with the refractive index ranging from 1.3405 to 1.4025 and a resolution of 2.49 × 10(-5) RIU ranging from 1.4025 to 1.4219, respectively.

Abstract:We present highly sensitive refractometers based on a long-period grating in a large mode area PCF. The maximum sensitivity is 1500 nm/RIU at a refractive index of 1.33, the highest reported for any fiber grating. The minimal detectable index change is $2\times 10^{-5}$. The high sensitivity is obtained by infiltrating the sample into the holes of the photonic crystal fiber to give a strong interaction between the sample and the probing field.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating based refractometers have attracted great attention for various applications, but they usually suffer from the cross sensitivity to temperature in practice. Here, we demonstrate a temperature-insensitive refractive index sensor based on a short-line long-period fiber grating (SL-LPFG). It is fabricated by using femtosecond laser to periodically inscribe short lines in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) with a small duty cycle of 0.3, and resonates to a cladding mode with a high diffraction order. This high-order-resonance SL-LPFG responds to ambient refractive index with the sensitivities of 175.84 nm/RIU and 367.63 nm/RIU in the ranges of 1.3381 to 1.3763 and 1.3763 to 1.4008, respectively. Meanwhile, it presents a temperature sensitivity as low as 4.0 pm/°C, which is almost one percent of the temperature sensitivity of the similar period LPFG fabricated by UV exposure method. It's significant for LPFG-based refractometers in normal SMFs to minimize thermal interference without the assistance of an additional sensing unit and matrix interrogation. Therefore, the proposed high-order-resonance SL-LPFG provides a high-performance and low-cost solution for refractive index related applications, especially in medical, chemical, and biological fields.

Abstract:A compact RI sensor with a high sensitivity based on LPFG is designed and experimentally confirmed. The proposed sensor is realized by splicing different fibers, which gives it stable mechanical performance. The simulation results indicate that, at short lengths, a high sensitivity is achieved by optimizing the strength of the evanescent field. Consistent with the simulation results, the sensor demonstrated a high RI sensitivity (>600 nm/RIU in 1.42) and a compact size (about 2.7 mm) in the experiment. The temperature response of the sensor is 19 pm/°C at the range of 26– C. The compact size and high RI sensitivity give this LPFG a competitive advantage in various refractive index measurement engineering applications.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating sensors with high refractive index sensitivity were designed and validated using femtosecond laser direct writing. The device consists of a single-mode fiber and a 2 cm long thin-core fiber fused. The refractive index is changed periodically by direct writing of a femtosecond laser pulse at the core of the thin-core fiber. Fiber gratings with periods of 80 μm, 150 μm, and 300 μm were selected for the study and showed maximum refractive indices of 1.4054, 1.4215, and 1.4326, respectively. With an 80 μm period, the maximum refractive index sensitivity increases significantly with wavelength and reaches 1430 nm/RIU. The temperature sensitivity is 7.6 pm/°C between 30 °C–430 °C and 14.4 pm/°C between 430 °C–630 °C. The sensor is high-temperature resistant, robust, simple to fabricate, and has a wide range of measurable refractive indices. This thin-core long-period fiber grating can better reduce crosstalk due to temperature effects in refractive index testing.

Abstract:An ultracompact gas-sensor based on the two-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity is presented. The sensor is formed by a point-defect resonant cavity. The transmission spectrums of the sensor with different ambient refractive indices ranging from n = 1.0 to n = 1.01 are calculated. The calculation results show that a change in ambient refractive index of Delta n =1 x 10(-4) is apparent, the sensitivity of the sensor (Delta lambda/Delta n) is achieved with 433nm/RIU(when lattice constant a = 520nm), where RIU means refractive index unit. The properties of the sensor are analyzed and calculated using the plane-wave expansion (PWE) method and simulated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Using the fabry-Perot cavity mode, the performances of the refractive index sensor are analyzed theoretically. The sensor is optimized using the photonic crystal waveguide structure and simulated using the FDTD method. As the small sensing area (similar to 10 mu m(2)) of the device would require only similar to 1 fL sample analyte, these ultracompact gas sensors would be widely used in little sample analyte in gas measurement.

Abstract:A high-sensitive refractive index sensor was theoretically demonstrated in a slow light engineered photonic crystal (PhC) cavity. In the proposed device configuration, one pair of two air holes was inserted into a line defected PhC waveguide as two reflectors, and a point defect was defined between the two reflectors to form a cavity. Then to improve the system sensitivity, slow light was introduced in the PhC waveguide by infiltrating fluid into the first two rows of air holes, without any structural variations. Finally, combined with a simple, high-precision, and low-cost Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for wavelength demodulation, the detection limit of this miniaturized and simple device could reach to 3.4×10-6 RIU. This is an encouraged result for the use of refractive index sensor in applications such as biochemical and biomedical sensing and diagnosis.

Abstract:We report the fabrication and characterization of it highly sensitive refractive-index sensor based on a long-period grating (LPG) pair with a fiber-taper section in between. Two LPGs with similar to 3-dB transmissivity form an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A fiber taper is made between the two LPGs to improve and tailor the sensitivity of the sensor. Enhanced sensitivity, which is about five times higher than that of a normal LPG pair, is achieved in the experiment.

Abstract:We proposed a highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on the long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed in the tapered fiber at dispersion turning point (DTP). The sensitivity of the refractive index sensor can reach 19473.3 nm/RIU. By reducing the fiber diameter, the evanescent field of the tapered fiber is enhanced, and the LPFG is inscribed at the DTP to improve the refractive index sensitivity of the grating. The proposed sensor has excellent refractive index sensitivity and has potential applications in water quality analysis, concentration measurement, food safety and industrial production.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is one of the most important passive fiber devices. They work by coupling light from the fundamental core mode to the forward-propagating cladding mode, creating a series of resonant peaks in the transmission spectrum. In this paper, a series of no-core fiber (NCF) sections were periodically misaligned and embed in the single-mode fiber (SMF), to form a LPFG through the periodic refractive index (RI) modulation along the fiber axis. This fabricating method enhances the RI modulation to shorten the length of the proposed sensor to 2.82 mm. Experimental result shows that the highest RI sensitivity for the sensor reaches −4460.83 nm/RIU in a measuring range of 1.33–1.40 RIU at room temperature. Hopefully, the proposed study can lay some implementation methods for the design of the all-fiber compact RI sensor.

Abstract:The transmission characteristic of a simple photonic crystal fiber surface plasmon resonance (PCF-SPR) sensor is proposed and discussed using a finite element method based on a modal solver. The design is a double-core polished fiber consisting of air holes in a similar hexagonal arrangement. Chemically stabilized gold layers are applied at the micro-channels of the bilateral polished surfaces. To obtain high sensitivity, the effects of gold-plated and gold-filled holes, odd and even modes, and the thickness of the metal layer on the sensor performance are discussed. The highest sensitivity of 19,325 nm/RIU is obtained in the sensing range of 1.30 to 1.44 employing the wavelength demodulation method for this sensor. Bandwidth tunable PCF polarization filters with excellent performance can be obtained by varying the thickness of the gold-plated film. The fabrication tolerance is also analyzed with respect to maximum ± 2.5% variations of the air hole diameters. The sensor combines refractive index sensing and polarization filtering and finds potential applications in biomedical research, organic chemical sample detection, environmental safety monitoring, and polarization.
Refractive Index Sensing Characteristics of Long-Period Fiber Gratings Near Dispersion Turning Points at 2 Μm Waveband

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate the surrounding refractive index (SRI) sensing characteristics of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) near dispersion turning points (DTP) working at 2 $\mu$ m waveband. The dependence of contrast and wavelength shift of LPFGs in different SRI range has been investigated. The contrast varies gradually from 4.5 dB to 12 dB in lower SRI region of 1.000-1.330, and an SRI sensitivity of 22.5 dB/RIU can be obtained. With the increasing SRI, the dip at DTP spilt into dual resonant dips. A high sensitivities of 3780 nm/RIU and 8233.3 nm/RIU can be achieved in the SRI regions of 1.320-1.420 and 1.420-1.450, respectively. The proposed LPFGs based SRI sensor has potential application in the field of fiber sensing.

Abstract:A dual-parameter sensor for measuring refractive-index and temperature is designed based on a magnetic fluids infiltrated photonic crystal fiber. By inserting a defective cavity in the cladding layer and inscribing a long-period grating on the fiber core, the proposed sensing mechanism can be achieved directly. The mode coupling and the confinement loss of cladding modes are investigated, and a dual-parameter matrix method is utilized to solve the cross-sensitivity problem. In addition, the relationship between resonant wavelength and external magnetic-field has been studied, which can be used for measuring the magnetic field.

Abstract:<p>A novel dual photonic crystal fiber (DPCF) temperature insensitive refractive index sensor is proposed in this article. By sequentially splicing lead-in SMF (single mode fiber), PCF_1, PCF_2, and lead-out SMF constitute the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The refractive index sensitivity (RIS) of the proposed sensor is improved by making an abrupt-taper on the fusion point of two PCFs. The proposed sensor is compared with a sensor without an abrupt-taper, the RIS value of the proposed sensor is increased by ∼1.9 times. The collapsed area of two photonic crystal fiber air holes is used as a beam splitter and combiner of Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Experimental analysis indicates that the RIS is 152.97 nm/RIU (1.330-1.383 RIU). Besides, the proposed sensor is independent of temperature and its sensitivity towards temperature is only -0.0045 nm/°C (30-80 °C). This sensor has the characteristics of relatively high sensitivity, ease of fabrication, and compact size.</p>

Abstract:A kind of compact fibre-optic sensor based on no-core fibre (NCF) cascaded with a strong coupling long-period fibre grating (LPFG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensing mechanism is based on the Mach–Zehnder-like interference between the core fundamental mode and cladding mode of the fibre structure. The NCF and LPFG are used as the mode exciter and combiner, respectively. Due to the particular properties of the strong coupling LPFG, the measurements of refractive index (RI) and temperature with high sensitivity are realized by monitoring the transmission spectrum with intensity and wavelength interrogation techniques, respectively. The achieved RI sensitivity reaches −580.269 dB/RIU in the range of 1.436–1.454 and the temperature sensitivity reaches 27.2 pm/°C.

Design and numerical analysis of a novel dual-polarized refractive index sensor based on D-shaped photonic crystal fiber

Abstract:This paper presents a novel dual-polarized refractive index sensor based on D-shaped photonic crystal fiber. Unlike the traditional D-shaped structures, we use a micro-opening of the deposited gold film as microfluidic channel to excite the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode. The fiber consists of two layers of circular pores arranged in an octagonal lattice structure. By optimizing the structural parameters of the fiber, the proposed sensor detection range: the refractive index of the analyte changes from 1.26 to 1.36. Numerical simulation based on the finite element method shows that the average sensitivities in the x- and y- polarization modes are 1182 nm RIU−1 and 5736 nm RIU−1, respectively. When the refractive index of the analyte to be measured is 1.36, the highest sensitivity of the x and y polarization directions is 1298 nm RIU−1 and 11 039 nm RIU−1, respectively. Among them, the resonance wavelength and the resonance intensity increase with the refractive index of the sample to be tested. In addition, we further analyzed the effects of microfluidic channel size, deposited gold film thickness, sensing region length and the overall structure of the fiber (polishing depth, inner cladding pore size, etc) on sensor transmission characteristics.
