Abstract:TiO2-x nanoparticles with different colours including white, grey, blue grey, light black and black were synthesized via magnesium (Mg) reduction of white Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. The as-prepared TiO2-x nanoparticles were used for adsorption of eight metal cations in aqueous solution. Results showed that the TiO2-x nanoparticles with black colour had the best adsorption removal rate for Pb2+. The adsorption kinetic data were fitted with the pseudo- second-order model better than the pseudo-first-order model. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well with both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity of Pb2+ by the black TiO2-x nanoparticles at 15 degrees C, 25 degrees C and 35 degrees C were 36.9, 53.4 and 59.2 mg/g, respectively. It was believed that the high adsorption capacity of the black TiO2-x nanoparticles was mainly due to its large surface area, high pore volume, and unique bimodal pore structures. Finally, it was demonstrated that the as-prepared black TiO2-x could be used for adsorption of Pb2+ from different natural waters such as tap water, lake water and river water.

Abstract:As a commercial adsorbent, TiO2 shows a high adsorption capacity for lead (Pb(II)). However, the molecular structure of Pb(II) adsorption on TiO2 is still unknown. Meanwhile, as a widely used corrosion inhibitor, phosphate (PO4) is usually added into drinking water, and its influential mechanism on Pb(II) removal by TiO2 remains unknown. Here, the mechanisms of Pb(II) adsorption on TiO2 and the effect of PO4 were systematically investigated using a combination of PO4 were systematically investigated using a combination of spectroscopic analyses and surface complexation modeling. The adsorption structure of Pb(II) on TiO2 was revealed as a tridentate mononuclear configuration by the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. In the presence of 0.1-S mg/L PO4, Pb(II) was removed mainly by adsorption on TiO2 rather than precipitation. Ternary complexation between Pb(II) and PO4 on TiO2 surfaces was found based on EXAFS and in situ Fourier transform infrared characterizations. These complexation structures were used to build a surface complexation model to accurately simulate and predict Pb(II) removal under different conditions. This study provides essential information about the mechanisms of Pb(II) removal by TiO2 and develops a model to predict adsorption behaviors, especially in the presence of PO4.
Facile self-assembly synthesis of titanate/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous systems

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g−1, displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

Abstract:Carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) was fabricated using a facile hydrothermal treatment. It was applied as an adsorbent to remove Pb(II) from the aqueous solution. The morphology and properties of the adsorbent were characterized with TEM, XRD, SAED and XPS. Furthermore, the applicability of Langmuir isothermal model for Pb(II) onto C-TiO2 was examined. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent and the determination of Pb(II) were evaluated with ICP-MS. The maximum adsorption capacity is 28.7 mg g-1, and this method has broad application prospects in areas of environmental purification.

Abstract:Mn oxide-coated carbon nanotubes (MnO2/CNTs) were prepared and used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The XRD revealed that MnO2 covered MnO2/CNTs was an amorphous phase. The Pb(II) removal capacity of MnO2/CNTs decreased with the decrease of pH. From the Langmuir isotherms, maximum adsorption capacity (Q0) of MnO2/CNTs towards Pb(II) was determined (Q0=78.74mg/g). Comparing with CNTs, significant improvement of Pb(II) adsorption shows MnO2/CNTs can be good Pb(II) absorbers. Although Pb(II) adsorption by MnO2/CNTs occurred rapidly within the first 15min of contact time, contact time needed at least 2h in order to attain adsorption equilibrium and the kinetic adsorption can be described by the pseudo-second-order rate equation. Thermodynamics of Pb(II) was studied at various temperatures of 283, 303 and 323K and the thermodynamic parameters were also determined.
Efficient Removal of Pb(II) Ion Using Tio2/Zno/Sio2 Nanocomposite from Aqueous Solutions Via Adsorption-Photocatalysis Process

Abstract:This research aims to investigate the usage of a TiO2/ZnO/SiO2 (TZS) composite prepared via a 24-h hydrothermal process at 180° C to remove Pb(II) through adsorption-photocatalysis. Pb(II) exposure has known health risks, making this study significant. The research explores the impact of pH, the nanocomposite quantity, and contact time in the process. Adsorption-photocatalysis was carried out in the dark for 60 min, followed by irradiation with a 160-watt mercury lamp. The adsorption process of Pb(II) ion removal adhered to the pseudo-second-order model regarding kinetics, while the adsorption isotherm corresponded to the Freundlich isotherm. Additionally, the assessment of photocatalysis kinetics showed that the removal of Pb(II) ions followed a pseudo-first-order model, resulting in a 99.58% elimination of Pb(II) ions. Post-adsorption-photocatalytic treatment, a yellowish precipitate was observed. The XRD pattern result of the yellowish precipitate confirmed the presence of PbO as the formed Pb phase. The study concludes that the TiO2/ZnO/SiO2 nanocomposite as adsorbent-photocatalyst is a highly effective, efficient, and promising method to remove Pb(II) contamination from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:As a superior cation-exchanger and photocatalyst, titanate exhibited efficient ability for heavy metals decontamination and organics degradation. However, no reports about simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics by using titanate has been found. The influence of intercalated heavy metal on the photocatalytic performances of titanate and its mechanism was poorly understood. In this work, titanate materials with different amounts of intercalated Pb(II) were prepared. Analytical TEM mapping images showed the uniform distributions of intercalated Pb(II) in titanate, excluding the formation of segregated nano-domains comprising either titanate or Pb-titanate. The crystalline and luminescent properties, which are relevant with the specific surface area and migration/recombination of the charge carriers, were considered as critical factors influencing the photocatalytic performance since the surficial charge states and derived band structures of titanate with different amounts of Pb(II) were almost identical. Steady state reaction experiments revealed that the catalytic activity of titanate after Pb(II) intercalation first sharply increased for 0.10Pb-Titanate and then decreased with further Pb(II) insertion. Better catalytic performance of 0.10Pb-Titanate was attribute to larger specific surface area, superior sorption affinity, higher excited charge carrier's quantity and satisfied luminescence lifetime. Finally, it was observed that simultaneous removal strategy by pure titanate not only enhanced the sorption of lead ions than individual removal system but also promoted the photocatalytic ability than 0.10Pb-Titanate, which provides a new idea for the utilization and optimization of titanate materials for simultaneous decontamination of heavy metals and organics.

Abstract:Summary: Highly effective decontamination of lead is a primary challenge for ecosystem protection and public health. Herein, we report a methodology of ternary cations intercalation to synthesize Ti3C2Tx MXene by structural control with angstrom-level precision through mixed fluorinated salts wet etching-alkalization approach for high-efficient lead adsorption. The successive introduction of lithium, potassium, and sodium ions continuously weakens interaction forces between Ti3C2Tx layers, resulting in achieving fine tailored interlayer distance from 9.8 to 15.9 Å. A high density of complexing groups are formed after ternary cations intercalation, which greatly improve the hydrophilicity of Ti3C2Tx to enhance the accessibility and shorten the mass transfer and provide abundant adsorption sites to exhibit strong complexing effects with lead ions. The prepared ternary cations-intercalated Ti3C2Tx nanosheets exhibited a high adsorption capacity (267.2 mg/g) toward lead ions and sharply cut down lead concentration from 10 to 0.009 mg/L, far below the drinking water standards (0.015 mg/L).

Abstract:Titanate nanotubes (TNs) with specific surface areas of 272.31 m(2)g(-1) and pore volumes of 1.264 cm(3)g(-1) were synthesized by alkaline hydrothermal method. The TNs were investigated as adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The FT-IR analysis indicated that Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption were mainly ascribed to the hydroxyl groups in the TNs. Batch experiments were conducted by varying contact time, pH and adsorbent dosage. It was shown that the initial uptake of each metal ion was very fast in the first 5 min, and adsorption equilibrium was reached after 180 min. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were found to be maximum at pH in the range of 5.0-6.0. The adsorption kinetics of both metal ions followed the pseudo-second-order model. Equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were determined to be 520.83 and 238.61 mg g(-1), respectively. Moreover, more than 80% of Pb(II) and 85% of Cd(II) adsorbed onto TNs can be desorbed with 0.1M HCl after 3h. Thus, TNs were considered to be effective and promising materials for the removal of both Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater.

Abstract:Titanium phosphate (TiP) exhibits preferable sorption toward lead ion in the presence of competing calcium ions at high levels, however, it is present as fine or ultrafine particles and cannot be directly employed in fixed-bed or any flow-through systems due to the excessive pressure drop and poor mechanical strength. In the present study a new hybrid sorbent TiP-001 was fabricated by impregnating titanium phosphate (TiP) nanoparticles onto a strongly acidic cation exchanger D-001 for enhanced lead removal from waters. D-001 was selected as a host material mainly because of the Donnan membrane effect resulting from the immobilized sulfonic acid groups bound on the exchanger matrix, which would enhance permeation of the target metal cation prior to effective sequestration. TiP-001 was characterized by transmission electron micrograph (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and pH-titration. Batch and column sorption onto TiP-001 was assayed to evaluate its performance as compared to the host exchanger D-001. Lead sorption onto TiP-001 is a pH-dependent process due to the ion-exchange nature, and its sorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second-order model well. Compared to D-001, TiP-001 displays highly selective lead sorption in the presence of competing calcium cations at concentration of several orders higher than the target metal. Fixed-bed sorption of a synthetic feeding solution indicates that lead retention by TiP-001 results in a conspicuous decrease of this toxic metal from 0.50 to below 0.010 mg/L (drinking water standard recommended by WHO). Moreover, its feasible regeneration by dilute HCl solution also favors TiP-001 to be a feasible sorbent for enhanced lead removal from water.
Removal of Uranium(VI), Lead(II) at the Surface of TiO2 Nanotubes Studied by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Abstract:A thin film of well-ordered anatase TiO2 nanotubes prepared by anodic oxidation of titanium metal were synthesised and used as adsorbent medium for the purification of water from aqueous uranium and lead. The amount of subtracted metal ions was quantified by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the surface of the reacted TiO2 surface. Batch experiments for the sorption of U and Pb at the surface of the titania substrate were carried out in separated solution equilibrated with air of uranyl acetate and lead nitrate, in the pH range 3–9. For uranium, the experiments were also repeated in anoxic (N2) atmosphere. The amount of metal ions adsorbed onto the titania medium was quantified by measurements of the surface coverage expressed in atomic percent, by recording high-resolution XPS spectra in the Ti2p, U4f and Pb4f photoelectron regions. Adsorption of the uranyl species in air atmosphere as a function of pH showed an adsorption edge near pH 4 with a maximum at pH 7. At higher pH the presence of very stable uranyl–carbonate complexes prevented any further adsorption. Further adsorption increased until pH 8.5 was obtained when the uranyl solution was purged from dissolved CO2. Lead ion showed a sorption edge at pH 6, with a maximum uptake at pH 8. The results showed that the uptake of uranium and lead on the selected titania medium is remarkably sensitive to the solution pH. This study demonstrates the reliability of this type of material for treating water polluted with heavy metals as well as leachates from radioactive nuclear wastes.

Abstract:The breakthrough behavior of Pb2+ in an ETS-10 fixed bed was experimentally examined at various operating conditions. Results showed that the adsorption amount of Pb2+ ions per unit mass of ETS-10 particles in a column is about 1.68 mmol/g under the experimental conditions. This amount was not markedly affected by the operating conditions because of the rapid adsorption rate of Pb2+ ions on ETS-10. In the presence of competitive metal ions, the amount of Pb2+ adsorbed on ETS-10 was slightly reduced. An overshoot of the effluent concentrations of competitive metal ions Cu2+ and Cd2+ was observed in the adsorption systems of binary and ternary solutions. This is ascribed to the replacement of pre-adsorbed Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions by Pb2+ ions. The ETS-10 column broken up by Pb2+ ions can be regenerated by using an EDTA-Na2 solution and the regenerated column can be reused.
A key role of inner-cation-π interaction in adsorption of Pb(II) on carbon nanotubes: Experimental and DFT studies

Abstract:Herein the adsorption and desorption of Pb2+ on oxidized (O-CNTs) and graphitized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (G-CNTs) were studied, and detailed adsorption mechanisms were discussed by experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The adsorption of Pb2+ on CNTs was co-guided by complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic and cation-π interactions. According to the abnormally low release ratio of Pb2+ on both O-CNTs and G-CNTs (< 9.03%), the O-containing groups on CNTs surface are not the only key factor affecting the adsorption behavior. The pore filling and complexation are the main mechanisms leading to irreversible adsorption, especially the important role of the inner-cation-π interaction in Pb2+ adsorption into the inner channel of CNTs at the high initial Pb2+ concentration, and DFT calculations further confirmed this result. The adsorption energy of the inner-cation-π interaction between Pb2+ and CNTs can be as high as − 77.851 kJ/mol, which is much higher than other interactions (≤ − 41.488 kJ/mol). Moreover, the stability of various adsorption mechanisms by HOMO-LUMO energy gap (Egap), electronic chemical potential (µ) and global hardness (η) were quantitatively measured and further revealed the inner-cation-π interaction is more stable. This study provides a deeper understanding of the removal of heavy metals by porous carbon-based nanomaterials.

Abstract:In the current study, amorphous titanium phosphate (TiP) was prepared as an adsorbent for heavy metals from waters. Uptake of Pb2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ onto TiP was assayed by batch tests; a polystyrene–sulfonic acid exchanger D-001 was selected for comparison and Ca2+ was chosen as a competing cation due to its ubiquitous occurrence in waters. The pH-titration curve of TiP implied that uptake of heavy metals onto TiP is essentially an ion-exchange process. Compared to D-001, TiP exhibits more preferable adsorption toward Pb2+ over Zn2+ and Cd2+ even in the presence of Ca2+ at different levels. FT-IR analysis of the TiP samples laden with heavy metals indicated that the uptake of Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions onto TiP is mainly driven by electrostatic interaction, while that of Pb2+ ions is possibly dependent upon inner-sphere complex formation, except for the electrostatic interaction. Moreover, uptake of heavy metals onto TiP approaches equilibrium quickly and the exhausted TiP particles could be readily regenerated by HCl solution.

Abstract:Adsorption behaviors of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions on the nanosized titanium dioxide with different crystal structure, such as anatase, rutile, mix crystal (Degussa P25) and amorphism have been explored. The adsorption and desorption experiments of the Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions are carried out in titanium dioxide suspension under different pH value conditions. Adsorption kinetics has been studied with pH dependence isotherms, which indicates that both chemisorption and physisorption are existed in adsorption courses. The results show that the anatase TiO2 powders possess the highest chemisorption capacities among the samples, which can be attributed to its higher surface energy, rough surface and unsaturated oxygen bond. The mechanism of adsorption is suggested to be the soft acid/soft base interactions to form complexes for chemisorption and electrostatic force of electric double layer (EDL) model for physisorption.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were treated by reflux oxidation in a mixture (HNO3 and H2SO4), hydroxyl (–OH) and carboxyl (–COOH) functional groups were introduced on the surface of MWCNTs to obtain the Oxidized-MWCNTs (OMWCNTs). OMWCNTs were used as adsorbent to removal of Pb(II) from wastewater. The effects of contact time, initial concentration of Pb(II), OMWCNTs dosage, pH and coexisting ions (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+) on the adsorption and removal of Pb(II) by OMWCNTs were systematically studied. The adsorption of Pb(II) by OMWCNTs could reach equilibrium in 10 min. The pH > 5 is conductive to the adsorption of Pb(II) by OMWCNTs. The coexisting ions (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+) had almost no effect on the adsorption of Pb(II) by OMWCNTs. The results showed that the isothermal data fit the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity was 558.66 mg/g for Pb(II) from Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could well describe the adsorption process of Pb(II).

Abstract:Adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Cr3+ from aqueous solutions onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs) in multiple systems was systematically studied. Particular attention was paid to competitive adsorption and the effect of inorganic ions. TNTs showed large adsorption capacity for the four heavy metals, with the mechanism of ion-exchange between metal ions and H+/Na+ located in the interlayers of TNTs. Binary or quaternary competitive adsorption indicated that the adsorption capacity of the four heavy metals onto TNTs followed the sequence of Pb2+ (2.64mmolg−1)≫Cd2+ (2.13mmolg−1)>Cu2+ (1.92mmolg−1)≫Cr3+ (1.37mmolg−1), which followed the reverse order of their hydration energies. Moreover, inorganic ions including Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ inhibited the adsorption of heavy metals on TNTs, because they competed for adsorption sites, decreased the activity of heavy metal ions, and promoted the aggregation of TNTs. However, Al3+ and Fe3+ generally enhanced adsorption because the resulting hydroxyl-Al/Fe intercalated or coated TNTs could also capture metal ions. Furthermore, minor effect of inorganic ions on adsorption of Pb2+ resulted from its strong affinity to TNTs. Difficult desorption and small inhibiting effect by Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ on adsorption of Cr3+ was due to the formed stable complex of HOCr(OTi)2 with TNTs. Present study indicated potential applications of TNTs in wastewater treatment for heavy metals.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 sphere was prepared using a template-free solvothermal treatment. The crystalline size, morphology and property of the adsorbent were characterized with transmission electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis/wavelength dispersive spectroscopy. Moreover, the applicability of three isothermal models for Pb(II) onto mesostructured TiO2 was investigated. The Pb(II) adsorbability of adsorbent was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The maximum adsorbability of mesoporous TiO2 sphere for Pb(II) is 35.2 mg g-1, and this material has bright application prospects for the removal of toxic metal ions.

Abstract:Titanates may be selectively used as inorganic adsorbents for heavy metal ions owing to their stability and fast adsorption kinetics. Nevertheless, the synthesis of such materials usually requires extreme reaction conditions. In this work, a new titanium-based material was rapidly synthesized under mild laboratory conditions. The obtained amorphous hydroxo titanate was tested for heavy metal sorption through kinetic and equilibrium batch tests, which indicated that the new material had high adsorption rates and adsorption capacities towards Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Pb(2) ions. Adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second order, and equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(2+), Ni(2+) and Pb(2+) in deionized water were around 1 mmol g(-1), and they decreased for Cu(2+) and Ni(2+) in the presence of Na(+), Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) ions, whereas the alkali metal ions did not influence Pb(2+) uptake. The efficiency of adsorption and recovery of lead ions were evaluated through column dynamic tests, by feeding the column with groundwater and tap water spiked with Pb(2+). The high performance of the hydroxo titanate over several cycles of retention and elution suggested that the product is potentially useful for the solid phase extraction of lead at trace levels in natural water samples, with potential use in metal pre-concentration for analytical applications.
