Abstract:Corrosion of metals causes tremendous financial loss and disasters every year. Graphene is a promising candidate for anti-corrosion coating, due to its unique properties, e.g. chemical inertness, impermeability and high conductivity. Despite being a commercially important material, it is difficult to grow graphene on carbon steels and is therefore prominently grown on copper or nickel substrates. Here, we report a unique approach to grow graphene on carbon steel and explore its anti-corrosion application. By introducing Ni element into carbon steel through a laser alloying process to form a Ni/Fe alloy catalyst, we make it feasible to grow graphene on carbon steel. The corrosion rate of graphene covered carbon steel is only 0.05mm/year, much lesser than that of the stainless steel (0.09mm/year). The corrosion resistance is up to ∼1900Ωcm2, which is almost 7 times that of original steel (270.7Ωcm2). These results indicate that the in situ grown graphene coatings perform very well in resisting harsh environments, much better than stainless steel itself.

Abstract:Graphene shows excellent performance as the thinnest protective coating, such as super-high electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, anticorrosion, and antifriction. However, graphene cannot provide sustainable protection as the surface coating due to its nanoscale thickness. Here, we explored a novel approach to repairing the damaged area of graphene film by laser induced regrowth of graphene. Graphene film was firstly in-situ grown on the nickel surface, along with a large number of carbon sources implanted into the nickel bulk. Once the surface graphene was damaged, the carbon source in the bulk would be re-precipitated by the laser inducing to form new graphene film on surface and repair the damaged area. The regrowth process depended strongly on the way of thermal input and the laser parameters. The results showed that only under the appropriate laser parameters, the graphene can be successfully regrown on the damaged area. The mechanism of regrowth and self-repairing was discussed by experiment results and theoretic analysis. This in-situ self-repaired graphene/carbon-rich metal composite shows a great potential in the field of metal protection against corrosion, friction, arc-ablating, etc.

Abstract:Graphene-like materials as popular materials have been the research focus in many application fields.Research status of the application of graphene materials in metal corrosion protection was summarized in two aspects as follows.First,the development history and disadvantages of pure graphene films being applied to metal protection were briefly outlined.It was concluded that the graphene film could not be directly covered on metal surfaces for corrosion resistance.In addition,preparation methods and performance of the graphene-reinforced composite protective coatings were introduced in detail.The disadvantages and improvement strategy of this protective method were summarized based on the research status of protective coating modified by graphene-like materials as filler.The strategy was to strengthen compatibility between the graphene materials and the protective coatings by performing molecular (e.g.silane coupling agent and polymer monomer,etc.) modification on surfaces of the graphene-like materials or by coating with nanoparticles (nano-SiO2,A1203,TiO2 particles,etc.).On this basis,the concept of "active protection" was proposed and a new graphene material-based corrosion inhibitor nanocontainer was prospected.Meanwhile,it was pointed out that deep protection mechanism of graphene materials must be resolved.In the end,the prospect of graphene-involved protection technology was demonstrated from the perspective of industrial application based on the whole graphene industry.

Abstract:We successfully fabricated three-dimensional graphene-nickel foam-polymer composites (GNPs) and then explored their microstructures and electrochemical responses when both graphene and nickel were exposed to a corrosive solution. It was found that the corrosion resistance of the GNPs decreases with increasing graphene thickness. This is considered to be caused by galvanic corrosion between the graphene and the nickel foam. The findings suggest that the intactness of the graphene film is very important when it is used as a protective barrier for long-term corrosion prevention.

Abstract:Direct fabrication of graphene on solid carbon coated nickel surface was realized by laser irradiation at room temperature. High-quality graphene was obtained rapidly, e.g. 28.8cm2/min. Arbitrary patterns designed by computer aided design (CAD) software were fabricated directly on Ni substrates without additional mask or setup. Raman mapping results showed that monolayer/bilayer graphene regions accounted for 64% of the film area. Graphene films exhibited excellent resistance to corrosion. The extremely low corrosion current density and high free corrosion potential in 3.5% NaCl aqueous (aq) solutions showed that the as-produced graphene had a superior anti-corrosion performance. The penetration and precipitation mechanism of carbon into Ni substrate during the fabrication process were also discussed. This approach may reach the scale large enough for practical applications.

Abstract:Single-layer defect-free graphene has excellent shielding performance and can prevent corrosion factors such as oxygen and water molecules from reaching the surface of the metal matrix. Based on the great application potential of graphene in the field of metal corrosion protection, this paper systematically summarizes the graphene film protective coating, graphene/organic protective coating and graphene-conductive polymer/organic protective coating. The existing problems of graphene film and the uniform dispersion of graphene in organic coating are analyzed and introduced in detail, and the future development of graphene-based anti-corrosion coating is prospected.

Abstract:Graphene coatings generally cannot provide effective long-time protection for metal substrates. In this study, we developed a novel graphene coating that forms reciprocating carbon chains at the defects of graphene (FRCCDG). The FRCCDG coating deposited on Ni substrate exhibits excellent corrosion resistance over extended durations. Compared with conventional graphene coatings, FRCCDG coatings have lower defect density and higher crystallinity. They form a barrier at the defects of the graphene, thereby hindering the penetration of corrosive elements and improving the ability of graphene to inhibit corrosion. When exposed to air for a period of seven months, the degree of oxidation of FRCCDG-coated Ni foil is lower than that of uncoated substrate. This confirms that the FRCCDG coating has long-lasting corrosion and oxidation resistance.

Abstract:Chemical reaction occurs when metal surface comes in ditions should afford graphene-based films with superior contact with oxygen in air or ions in solutions, resulting metals being oxidized and corroded. The challenge in developing protection barriers from corrosion is to develop an efficient method for the coatingmaterial. Graphene is a very light nanostructured material with extraordinary strength, low friction coefficient, and remarkable transparent conducting properties. It has attracted much attention for the possibility of being the thinnest anti-corrosion coating films. Previously, several groups have reported that graphene materials could significantly improve the corrosion resistance of metals. Theoretically, graphene film could act as a molecular barrier to effectively prevent the direct contact between metals and reactive ions/molecules. However, Schriver et al. recently reported that the galvanic corrosion process of metals could be enhanced by graphene materials after a long-term exposure to aqueous media, possibly due to their high electron mobility. Plus, Wlasny et al. suggested that lattice defects present in the graphene films could play a pivotal role in the local corrosion process, which would dramatically limit the latent applications of graphene material in nano-scaled devices. One viable approach to surmount these hurdles is to enhance the barrier effect of graphene, while maintaining the film thickness to prevent the permeation of reactive molecules. Abstract:Corrosion of metals in atmospheric environments is a worldwide problem in industry and daily life. Traditional anticorrosion methods including sacrificial anodes or protective coatings have performance limitations. Here, we report atomically thin, polycrystalline few-layer graphene (FLG) grown by chemical vapor deposition as a long-term protective coating film for copper (Cu). A six-year old, FLG-protected Cu is visually shiny and detailed material characterizations capture no sign of oxidation. The success of the durable anticorrosion film depends on the misalignment of grain boundaries between adjacent graphene layers. Theoretical calculations further found that corrosive molecules always encounter extremely high energy barrier when diffusing through the FLG layers. Therefore, the FLG is able to prevent the corrosive molecules from reaching the underlying Cu surface. This work highlights the interesting structures of polycrystalline FLG and sheds insight into the atomically thin coatings for various applications.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted considerable attention as anti-corrosion material due to its peculiar two-dimensional nanostructure and superior physicochemical properties. Graphene nanosheets can be independently or concertedly applied as the barriers against metal corrosion in the form of thin films, layered structures, or composites. Numerous attempts have been made to establish the correlation between the nanoscale structure and macroscale performance of graphene. In that regard, experimental and computational methods, such as quantum chemistry and molecular simulation, allow one to gain insight into the anti-corrosion mechanisms of graphene-related coatings. This review summarizes up-to-date knowledge about pure graphene and graphene-based composite coatings, including cathodic protection and self-healing coatings. Particular attention is paid to the structure–property relationship and anti-corrosion mechanisms in these systems. Finally, the shared and distinct role of graphene in various coatings and their prospects for future research are discussed as well.

Abstract:This paper summarized and collated international literatures on graphene organic anticorrosion coatings in recent ten years and hierarchical and organized knowledge structures were formed. According to the role of graphene, from the perspective of theoretical and applied research, the improvement of graphene on organic anti-corrosion coatings were reviewed. In terms of the improvement of graphene on the shielding effect of coatings, the paper discussed the dispersion methods and orientation technology of graphene. A variety of graphene dispersion methods reported in the literatures were systematically organized according to dispersant groups, modification mechanisms, dispersion mechanisms and preparation processes. In terms of functional synergy, the functionalization of graphene was divided into two aspects. They were enhancement of adhesion and self-healing of the coatings. The increase in adhesion was attributed to the covalent bonds between the functional groups on the surface of graphene and the metal matrix. In the studies on self-healing of the coatings based on modified graphene, graphene acted as the load platform for self-healing functional groups. According to the self-healing groups supported by graphene, the self-healing mechanism was divided into catalytic passivation film and corrosion inhibitor adsorption film. Then, the paper discussed the practical problems and doubts encountered in the research and application of graphene in the field of anticorrosion, and that was the local corrosion acceleration phenomenon caused by the conductivity of graphene. Meanwhile, the way to solve the promotion of local corrosion were proposed. Finally, from the macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic perspectives, the paper summarized and discussed the influence mechanism of graphene conductivity and its orientation on the shielding effect and cathodic protective performance of zinc-rich coatings.

Realization of Graphene on the Surface of Electroless Ni–P Coating for Short-Term Corrosion Prevention

Abstract:Graphene was first fabricated on the surface of an electroless Ni–P coating/carbon steel (Ni–P–G) to improve its corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, an electroless Ni–P coating (Ni–P) was heated (Ni–P–H) under the same condition as Ni–P–G for comparison. The morphological results showed that a wavy multilayer graphene was formed on the surface of Ni–P–G. The layer number of the graphene film was 5–10 according to the analysis of Raman spectra and observation by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The ID/IG ratio calculated from the Raman spectrum revealed that the graphene growing at the grain of Ni–P–H had larger grain size than that growing at the grain boundary. The electrochemical results showed a higher Rp, a lower CPEdl, and a lower corrosion rate of Ni–P–G than Q235 steel, Ni–P, and Ni–P–H, indicating a higher corrosion resistance. In addition, the surface potential map achieved by a scanning Kelvin probe presented a more positive surface potential of Ni–P–G than Ni–P with the difference being around 375–750 mV, demonstrating a lower corrosion tendency of Ni–P–G.

Abstract:The ability to protect refined metals from reactive environments is vital to many industrial and academic applications. Current solutions, however, typically introduce several negative effects, including increased thickness and changes in the metal physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time the ability of graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition to protect the surface of the metallic growth substrates of Cu and Cu/Ni alloy from air oxidation. In particular, graphene prevents the formation of any oxide on the protected metal surfaces, thus allowing pure metal surfaces only one atom away from reactive environments. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies show that the metal surface is well protected from oxidation even after heating at 200 °C in air for up to 4 h. Our work further shows that graphene provides effective resistance against hydrogen peroxide. This protection method offers significant advantages and can be used on any metal that catalyzes graphene growth.

Fluorinated graphene film for corrosion control on copper: Experimental and theoretical studies

Abstract:Although graphene film has received considerable scientific and industrial interest, the high electrical conductivity strongly limits its corrosion protection over a long-term scale. Here we develop an effective strategy to achieve the long-term corrosion protection performance of graphene film by fluorinated treatment. The success of fluorination strategy is evident in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, local impedance module, and corresponding corrosion morphologies and structures. Even after 14 days' immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, the low frequency impedance modulus of fluorinated graphene film with fluorinated treatment at 100 °C is an order of magnitude higher as compared with pristine one. The corrosion resistance over a large scale also persists in air environment. We propose that the fluorine atoms bond with carbon element on the edge of vacancy defects, inhibiting the corrosion-related molecules passing through the film via intrinsic defects, this is supported by the density functional theory calculations (DFT). In brief, through effective preparation, analysis of corrosion resistant performance, and theoretical calculation, the fluorinated graphene film with long-term anti-corrosion capability is highly expected to open a new platform for practical applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide is a potent composite material for corrosion applications due to the presence of abundant functional groups and chemical stability [<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib0001">1</a>,<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib0002">2</a>]. Nickel-graphene oxide (Ni/GO) composite coating has been widely employed in various sectors such as marine, aerospace, and automobile industries due to their higher mechanical and anti-corrosive properties <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib0003">[3]</a>. However, the conventional electrodeposition of nickel-graphene oxide coating does not reach a higher performance due to the limited incorporation and agglomeration of GO. This study presents the high-performance corrosion resistance of Ni/GO composite coating prepared through the ultrasonic-assisted supercritical-CO2 (US-SCCO2) electrodeposition process. For comparison, pure Ni and Ni/GO coatings prepared from both the conventional and SCCO2 electrodeposition processes were probed. The structural and morphological properties of the deposited films were scrutinized using various physiochemical characterization techniques. Then we looked into the electrochemical studies on corrosion resistance behavior of prepared films based on the changes in their morphology, crystal phase, size, core level oxidation state, carbon presence, coating hardness, and charge transfer resistance properties. Interestingly the observed results revealed that incorporating the GO nanosheets through US-SCCO2 condition enhanced the Ni/GO composite coating's anti-corrosion performance (Rp = 9073.8 Ω/cm2) than conventional Ni/GO composite coating (Rp = 3935.7 Ω/cm2) and pure Ni-coating (Rp = 1483.7 Ω/cm2). Thereby, we have successfully demonstrated the efficient and eco-friendly US-SCCO2 electrodeposition method, improving the Ni/GO composite coating's hardness and anti-corrosion properties.

Abstract:Graphene (Gr) is a promising material for addressing microbially induced corrosion (MIC) issues that cause staggering economic losses, estimated at nearly $55 billion annually in the US alone. However, structural defects including edges, grain boundaries, and cracks can compromise its performance in aggressive biological environments. Owing to the technological relevance of nickel (Ni), its key roles in biological mechanisms, and the strong hybridization of d-electrons of Ni with Gr π-orbitals, we explore the effects of the key defects in Gr/Ni exposed to archetype sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Electrochemical and spectroscopy tests revealed that the grain boundaries play a stronger role than cracks. The edges and grain boundaries in as-grown Gr on Ni (dGr/Ni) aggravated corrosion by two-fold, while the cracks in the transferred counterpart that lacked these defects improved corrosion resistance by 2-fold. A combination of biotic and abiotic studies corroborated the unique roles of grain boundaries as sulfur reservoirs to promote the attachment of sessile SRB cells and subsequent redox reactions. Analysis of distinct biogenic products confirmed the role of grain boundaries on pitting corrosion. These insights can guide the rational design of graphene coatings specifically for biological environments prone to MIC.

Abstract:Metal corrosion is a long-lasting problem in history and ultrahigh anticorrosion is one ultimate pursuit in the metal-related industry. Graphene, in principle, can be a revolutionary material for anticorrosion due to its excellent impermeability to any molecule or ion (except for protons). However, in real applications, it is found that the metallic graphene forms an electrochemical circuit with the protected metals to accelerate the corrosion once the corrosive fluids leaks into the interface. Therefore, whether graphene can be used as an excellent anticorrosion material is under intense debate now. Here, graphene-coated Cu is employed to investigate the facet-dependent anticorrosion of metals. It is demonstrated that as-grown graphene can protect Cu(111) surface from oxidation in humid air lasting for more than 2.5 years, in sharp contrast with the accelerated oxidation of graphene-coated Cu(100) surface. Further atomic-scale characterization and ab initio calculations reveal that the strong interfacial coupling of the commensurate graphene/Cu(111) prevents H2 O diffusion into the graphene/Cu(111) interface, but the one-dimensional wrinkles formed in the incommensurate graphene on Cu(100) can facilitate the H2 O diffusion at the interface. This study resolves the contradiction on the anticorrosion capacity of graphene and opens a new opportunity for ultrahigh metal anticorrosion through commensurate graphene coating.
Long-term corrosion protection of styrene acrylic coatings enhanced by fluorine and nitrogen co-doped graphene oxide

Abstract:Abstract Graphene materials are widely used as a physical barrier when applying anticorrosion polymer coatings due to their large surface area and layered structure. However, the electrical conductivity of intrinsic graphene can accelerate galvanic corrosion and shorten the protection period. In this work, fluorine and nitrogen co-doped graphene oxide (FNGO) was synthesized by a hydrothermal process and acted as an anticorrosion filler in waterborne styrene acrylic coatings. Styrene acrylic coatings with 0.4 wt% FNGO showed a corrosion current density that was two orders of magnitude lower than the other samples in the potential polarization test and the largest impedance modulus in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results. The outstanding corrosion protection was attributed to the graphene acting as a physical barrier and the synergistic effect of the doped fluorine and nitrogen. In addition to the ‘labyrinth effect’ of the graphene matrix, the nitrogen atoms inserted in the graphene plane and fluorine atoms grafted on the graphene simultaneously adjusted the electrical properties of graphene, prohibiting electron transport between it and the styrene acrylic resin matrix. This result indicates that doped graphene oxide has great potential to increase the corrosion resistance of waterborne coatings.

Graphene as an anti-corrosion coating layer

Abstract:Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in an aromatic hexagonal lattice, has recently drawn attention as a potential coating material due to its impermeability, thermodynamic stability, transparency and flexibility. Here, the effectiveness of a model system, a graphene covered Pt(100) surface, for studying the anti-corrosion properties of graphene, has been evaluated. Chemical vapour deposition techniques were used to cover the single crystal surface with a complete layer of high-quality graphene and the surface was characterised after exposure to corrosive environments with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and Raman spectroscopy. Graphene covered Pt samples were exposed to: (i) ambient atmosphere for 6 months at room temperature and 60 °C for 75 min, (ii) Milli-Q water for 14 hours at room temperature and 60 °C for 75 min, and (iii) saltwater (0.513 M NaCl) for 75 min at room temperature and 60 °C. STM provides atomic resolution images, which show that the graphene layer and the underlying surface reconstruction on the Pt(100) surface remain intact over the majority of the surface under all conditions, except exposure to saltwater when the sample is kept at 60 °C. Raman spectroscopy shows a broadening of all graphene related peaks due to hybridisation between the surface Pt d-orbitals and the graphene π-bands. This hybridisation also survives exposure to all environments except saltwater on the hot surface, with the latter leading to peaks more representative of a quasi free-standing graphene layer. A mechanism explaining the corrosive effect of hot saltwater is suggested. Based on these experiments, graphene is proposed to offer protection against corrosion in all tested environments, except saltwater on a hot surface, and Raman spectroscopy is proposed as a useful method for indirectly assessing the chemical state of the Pt surface.
