Abstract:Rare gas clusters are model systems to investigate structural properties at finite size. However, their structures are difficult to be determined with available experimental techniques because of the strong coupling between the vibration and the rotation. Here we experimentally investigated multiple ionization and fragmentation dynamics of argon trimer by ultrashort intense laser fields and reconstructed their structures with Coulomb explosion technique. The measured structure distribution was compared with our finite-temperature ab initio calculations and the discrepancy was discussed. The present study provides a guidance for the development of theoretical methods for exploring the geometric structure of rare gas clusters.

Abstract:An optical imaging method based on Rayleigh scattering is introduced to study the spatial distribution of atomic argon clusters produced in a gas jet. The radial distribution and evolution of the clusters are captured directly by a high speed camera, resulting in greatly increased precision and accuracy. It is found that the radial distribution of the clusters follows a Gaussian curve rather than the double-humped curve observed in a previous experiment. The normalized radial and axial distributions of the clusters are not influenced by the stagnation pressure and may be strictly determined by the nozzle structure. The average cluster sizes decrease slightly at far axial distances. A method of estimating the half-angle of the nozzle is also presented.

Abstract:We have experimentally and theoretically studied the fragmentation dynamics of argon trimer (Ar-3) in intense laser fields. By coincidently measuring the momentum vectors, we obtained the emission geometry of the three fragmental ions produced in the three-body fragmentation process. In addition to the direct Coulomb explosion channels, we observed the indirect Coulomb explosion channels with Rydberg excitation. We have further developed a classical polyatomic molecular ensemble model, in which all interactions among electrons and nuclei are fully included, to simulate the fragmentation dynamics of argon trimer in intense laser fields. The experimental observations have been reproduced by the model calculation. The simulations show that the Rydberg excitation modifies the kinetic energy release as well as the emission geometry of fragmental ions during the explosion process. The study provides insight into the correlation dynamics of electrons and nuclei of many-body physics driven by intense laser fields.

Abstract:We experimentally reconstructed the structure of the N2Ar van der Waals complex with the technique of laser-based channel-selected Coulomb explosion imaging. The internuclear distance between the N2 center of mass and the Ar atom, i.e., the length of the van der Waals bond, was determined to be 3.88 Å from the two-body explosion channels. The angle between the van der Waals bond and the N2 principal axis was determined to be 90° from the three-body explosion channels. The reconstructed structure was contrasted with our high level ab initio calculations. The agreement demonstrated the potential application of laser-based Coulomb explosion in imaging transient molecular structure, particularly for floppy van der Waals complexes, whose structures remain difficult to be determined by conventional spectroscopic methods.

Abstract:Thermal dissociation of free and acceptor-bound quasi-two-dimensional positive trions is investigated by measuring the temperature dependence of the integrated emission intensity in magnetic fields up to 17 T in high quality GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum wells. Three distinct dissociation processes are observed for the well-resolved hole cyclotron replicas ("shake-up") of positive trions bound to neutral acceptors in the spin-doublet state (SU-A(0)X(d)(+)). To demonstrate that the hole involved in the shake-up process is not bound by the Coulomb interaction to the charged A(0)X(+) complex, we calculate the valence Landau levels using the Luttinger model beyond the axial approximation. The calculated value of the hole cyclotron energy agrees well with the experimental data for the energy separation of the A(0)X(+) and SU-A(0)X(+) lines, determined from the emission spectra. At low temperatures, below 6 K, the dominant dissociation results in a free hole and an exciton bound to the neutral acceptor in the spin-singlet or -triplet state, (A(0)X(d)(+) -> A(0)X(s) + h or A(0)X(t) + h). At higher temperatures, above 9 K, the dissociation into the free positive trion and the neutral acceptor (A(0)X(d)(+) -> A(0) + X+) predominates. From the temperature evolution of the integrated emission of the free trion lines (X+) we evaluate the transition energy between the two triplet trion states, the dark one (X-td(+)) and the bright one (X-tb(+)). The ionization energies of all detected dissociation processes are compared with the spectral positions of the relevant radiative recombination lines from which excellent quantitative agreement is achieved.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically studied dissociative ionization of argon dimer driven by intense femtosecond laser pulses. In the experiment, we measured the ion yield and the angular distribution of fragmental ions generated from the dissociative ionization channels of (1,1) (Ar-2(2+) -> Ar+ + Ar+) and (2,1) (Ar-2(3+) -> Ar2+ + Ar+) using a cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. The channel ratio of (2,1)/(1,1) is 4.5-7.5 times of the yield ratio of double ionization to single ionization of argon monomer depending on the laser intensity. The measurement verified that the ionization of Ar+ is greatly enhanced if there exists a neighboring Ar+ separated by a critical distance. In addition, the fragmental ions exhibit an anisotropic angular distribution with the peak along the laser polarization direction and the full width at half maximum becomes broader with increasing laser intensity. Using a full three-dimensional classical ensemble model, we calculated the angle-dependent multiple ionization probability of argon dimer in intense laser fields. The results show that the experimentally observed anisotropic angular distribution of fragmental ions can be attributed to the angle-dependent enhanced ionization of the argon dimer in intense laser fields.

Abstract:We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the ionization-fragmentation dynamics of argon dimers in intense few-cycle laser pulses with a tagged carrier-envelope phase. We find that a field-driven electron transfer process from one argon atom across the system boundary to the other argon atom triggers sub-cycle electron-electron interaction dynamics in the neighboring atom. This attosecond electron-transfer process between distant entities and its implications manifest themselves as a distinct phase-shift between the measured asymmetry of electron emission curves of the $\text{Ar}^{+}+\text{Ar}^{2+}$ and $\text{Ar}^{2+}+\text{Ar}^{2+}$ fragmentation channels. Our work discloses a strong-field route to controlling the dynamics in molecular compounds through the excitation of electronic dynamics on a distant molecule by driving inter-molecular electron-transfer processes.

Abstract:Brillouin scattering measurements were performed on liquid argon in a diamond anvil cell at various solidification points up to 503 K. With the measured results from the 60 degrees platelet- and 180 degrees back-scattering geometries, the sound velocity, refractive index, experimental equation of state, and adiabatic bulk modulus of liquid argon as a function of pressure were determined. The discrepancy between experimental and previous calculated equation of state indicates that the many-body contribution to the density of liquid argon increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature. By analyzing the Brillouin spectra in the coexistence of liquid and solid phase regions, the volume change and latent heat of solid-liquid transformation along the equilibrium curve have been also obtained for the first time. Abstract:The intensity-difference spectrum technique is applied to record charge-state resolved ion energy spectra from the Coulomb explosion of small Ar clusters under well-resolved laser intensity conditions. The far-reaching control of the experimental parameters permits us to identify a striking change in the expansion pattern of the nanoplasma beyond a given intensity. The simultaneous characterization of ion charge state and energy uncovers that a reduction of the laser intensity leads to a development of low energy cuts in the ion yields, not present at higher fluence. The complex interplay of outer ionization, recombination, ion screening, and the phenomenon of ionization saturation favors a surface-driven expansion at low plasma electron temperatures. Abstract:Electron Capture and transfer ionization by Ar(8–12)+ in collisions with argon atoms were studied by using the position sensitive and time-of-flight techniques. Some of the measured projectile charge changing cross sections (σq,q−k) and phenomenological cross sections (σrq,q−k) are reported in this paper. The measured cross sections are compared with the predictions of the molecular Coulombic overbarrier model by considering the autoionization decay and electron evaporation of multiply excited states in projectiles and recoil ions respectively.

Abstract:We record angle-resolved electron-momentum distributions from 800-nm short-pulse laser ionization of argon and compare our data with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. A model potential of argon and the single active electron approximation are used. The calculation shows quantitative agreement in all dominant features of the experimental results. The energy and angular distributions of the photoelectrons, together with numerical simulations, allow us to identify the multiple processes involved during the interaction, such as channel switching, multiphoton resonant and nonresonant ionization, and ac Stark splitting.

Abstract:High resolution soft x-ray spectra (3-40 nm) produced by the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with argon clusters at an intensity of about 1 X 10(16) W/cm(2) are measured under different backing pressures. Soft x-ray spectra are strongly dependent on the initial size of cluster and plasma expanding process. We find that laser polarization has no evident effect on the soft x-ray emission from the lateral side. The measurement on angular distribution of hot electrons shows that the resonant absorption is the dominated mechanism. Both the x-ray yield and the laser energy absorption are more efficient when the radius of cluster is comparable with the plasma resonant length. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Molecular photoabsorption results in an electronic excitation/ionization which couples to the rearrangement of the nuclei. The resulting intertwined change of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom determines the conversion of photoenergy into other molecular energy forms. Nucleobases are excellent candidates for studying such dynamics, and great effort has been taken in the past to observe the electronic changes induced by the initial excitation in a time-resolved manner using ultrafast electron spectroscopy. The linked geometrical changes during nucleobase photorelaxation have so far not been observed directly in time-resolved experiments. Here, we present a study on a thionucleobase, where we extract comprehensive information on the molecular rearrangement using Coulomb explosion imaging. Our measurement links the extracted deplanarization of the molecular geometry to the previously studied temporal evolution of the electronic properties of the system. In particular, the protons of the exploded molecule are well-suited messengers carrying rich information on the molecule's geometry at distinct times after the initial electronic excitation. The combination of ultrashort laser pulses to trigger molecular dynamics, intense X-ray free-electron laser pulses for the explosion of the molecule, and multi-particle coincidence detection opens new avenues for time-resolved studies of complex molecules in the gas phase.

Explosion Dynamics of Methane Clusters Irradiated by 38 nm XUV Laser Pulses

Abstract:We have studied the explosion dynamics of methane clusters irradiated by intense, femtosecond, 38 nm (32.6 eV) XUV laser pulses. The ion time-of-flight spectrum measured with a Wiley-McLaren-type time-of-flight spectrometer reveals undissociated molecular $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ ions, fragments which are missing hydrogen atoms due to the breakage of one or more C-H bonds $(\textrm{CH}_3^+, \textrm{CH}_2^+ \ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{CH}^+)$ and the recombination product $\textrm{CH}_5^+$. Also visible on the time-of-flight traces are atomic and molecular hydrogen ions $(\textrm{H}^+ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{H}_2^+)$, carbon ions, and larger hydrocarbons such as $\textrm{C}_2 \textrm{H}_2^+$ and $\textrm{C}_2\textrm{H}_3^+$. No doubly-charged parent ions $(\textrm{CH}_4^{2+})$ were detected. The time-of-flight results show that total and relative ion yields depend strongly on cluster size. The absolute yields of $\textrm{CH}^+_5$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ scale linearly with the yields of the other generated fragments up to a cluster size of $\langle\textrm{N}\rangle=70,000 \ \textrm{molecules}$, then begin to decrease, whereas the yields of the $\textrm{CH}_n^+(n=1-4) $ fragments plateau at this cluster size. The behavior of $\textrm{H}^+$ may be understood through the electron recombination rate, which depends on the electron temperature and the cluster average charge. Moreover, the $\textrm{CH}_5^+$ behavior is explained by the depletion of both $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ via electron-ion recombination in the expanding nanoplasma.

Abstract:The dissociative ionization of Ar dimers is investigated in femtosecond laser fields with intensities from 260 to 1020 TW/cm 2 . The three-dimensional momentum and kinetic-energy release of fragmental ions generated from the channels Ar 2 2+ →Ar + +Ar + , Ar 2 3+ →Ar 2+ +Ar + , and Ar 2 4+ →Ar 2+ +Ar 2+ were measured with a cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectrometer. It is shown that the laser intensity significantly modulates the kinetic energies and angular distributions of fragmental ions from dissociative double ionization. Laser-induced charge-transfer following one-site double ionization contributes relatively more to the dissociative double ionization at lower laser intensity. The calculation results of a one-dimensional model based on the WKB approximation suggest that the charge transfer is suppressed at higher laser intensity due to the core polarization effect. In addition, double, triple, and quadruple dissociative ionizations of Ar dimers are accompanied by frustrated-tunneling ionization that increases with the laser intensity.

Abstract:Clusters usually exhibit unique structures as an intermediate form of matter. However, their structures are still difficult to be determined with available experimental techniques. There are many structure distinct isomers for carbon-dioxide clusters. Here we report an experimental and theoretical joint study to determine the structures of the lowest-energy isomers. In the experiment, we exploded carbon-dioxide clusters by laser-driven multiple ionization and obtained precise momentum vectors of explosion fragments for each explosion channel. In the theory, we calculated low-energy structures of carbon-dioxide clusters and simulated their explosion dynamics. In comparison with the momentum vectors of explosion fragments, the lowest-energy isomers were identified for carbon-dioxide dimers, trimers, and tetramers.

Abstract:Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) with x-ray free electron lasers has recently been shown to be a powerful method for obtaining detailed structural information of gas-phase planar ring molecules [R. Boll et al. , X-ray multiphoton-induced Coulomb explosion images complex single molecules, Nat. Phys. 18 , 423 (2022).]. In this Letter, we investigate the potential of CEI driven by a tabletop laser and extend this approach to differentiating three-dimensional structures. We study the static CEI patterns of planar and nonplanar organic molecules that resemble the structures of typical products formed in ring-opening reactions. Our results reveal that each molecule exhibits a well-localized and distinctive pattern in three-dimensional fragment-ion momentum space. We find that these patterns yield direct information about the molecular structures and can be qualitatively reproduced using a classical Coulomb explosion simulation. Our findings suggest that laser-induced CEI can serve as a robust method for differentiating molecular structures of organic ring and chain molecules. As such, it holds great promise as a method for following ultrafast structural changes, e.g., during ring-opening reactions, by tracking the motion of individual atoms in pump-probe experiments. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.123201 © 2024 American Physical Society

Tomographic diffractometry of laser-induced plasma formations

Abstract:A sensitive optical diffractometry method is developed and utilized for advanced tomography of laser-induced air plasma formations. Using transverse diffractometry and Supergaussian plasma distribution modelling we extract the main parameters of the plasma being the plasma density, width and shape with 20 micrometer spatial resolution throughout the plasma formation. The experimentally recorded diffraction patterns fitted by the Supergaussian plasma model are found to capture unprecedentedly delicate traits in the evolution of the plasma from its effective birth and on. Key features in the spatial evolution of the plasma such as the 'escape position', the 'turning point' and the refocusing dynamics of the beam are identified and explored in details. Our work provides experimental and theoretical access into the highly nonlinear dynamics of laser-induced air plasma.

Abstract:A four-body coincident measurement of carbonyl sulfide dimers is conducted using a femtosecond laserinduced Coulomb explosion. Sequential and concerted processes that occur during the Coulomb explosion are distinguished. Four isomers of carbonyl sulfide dimer are resolved, and their structures are retrieved from the measured coincident momenta of the fragment ions generated in the concerted process, with the help of a classical trajectory simulation. As a result of our study, we can resolve the isomers of a weakly bound molecular cluster and determine their stereo configuration by using the Coulomb explosion. There is also the potential in femtosecond time-resolved imaging for structural evolution of molecular complexes in dissociation.
