Abstract:We experimentally reconstructed the structure of the N2Ar van der Waals complex with the technique of laser-based channel-selected Coulomb explosion imaging. The internuclear distance between the N2 center of mass and the Ar atom, i.e., the length of the van der Waals bond, was determined to be 3.88 Å from the two-body explosion channels. The angle between the van der Waals bond and the N2 principal axis was determined to be 90° from the three-body explosion channels. The reconstructed structure was contrasted with our high level ab initio calculations. The agreement demonstrated the potential application of laser-based Coulomb explosion in imaging transient molecular structure, particularly for floppy van der Waals complexes, whose structures remain difficult to be determined by conventional spectroscopic methods.

Abstract:Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) with x-ray free electron lasers has recently been shown to be a powerful method for obtaining detailed structural information of gas-phase planar ring molecules [R. Boll et al. , X-ray multiphoton-induced Coulomb explosion images complex single molecules, Nat. Phys. 18 , 423 (2022).]. In this Letter, we investigate the potential of CEI driven by a tabletop laser and extend this approach to differentiating three-dimensional structures. We study the static CEI patterns of planar and nonplanar organic molecules that resemble the structures of typical products formed in ring-opening reactions. Our results reveal that each molecule exhibits a well-localized and distinctive pattern in three-dimensional fragment-ion momentum space. We find that these patterns yield direct information about the molecular structures and can be qualitatively reproduced using a classical Coulomb explosion simulation. Our findings suggest that laser-induced CEI can serve as a robust method for differentiating molecular structures of organic ring and chain molecules. As such, it holds great promise as a method for following ultrafast structural changes, e.g., during ring-opening reactions, by tracking the motion of individual atoms in pump-probe experiments. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.123201 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Molecular photoabsorption results in an electronic excitation/ionization which couples to the rearrangement of the nuclei. The resulting intertwined change of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom determines the conversion of photoenergy into other molecular energy forms. Nucleobases are excellent candidates for studying such dynamics, and great effort has been taken in the past to observe the electronic changes induced by the initial excitation in a time-resolved manner using ultrafast electron spectroscopy. The linked geometrical changes during nucleobase photorelaxation have so far not been observed directly in time-resolved experiments. Here, we present a study on a thionucleobase, where we extract comprehensive information on the molecular rearrangement using Coulomb explosion imaging. Our measurement links the extracted deplanarization of the molecular geometry to the previously studied temporal evolution of the electronic properties of the system. In particular, the protons of the exploded molecule are well-suited messengers carrying rich information on the molecule's geometry at distinct times after the initial electronic excitation. The combination of ultrashort laser pulses to trigger molecular dynamics, intense X-ray free-electron laser pulses for the explosion of the molecule, and multi-particle coincidence detection opens new avenues for time-resolved studies of complex molecules in the gas phase.

Abstract:A four-body coincident measurement of carbonyl sulfide dimers is conducted using a femtosecond laserinduced Coulomb explosion. Sequential and concerted processes that occur during the Coulomb explosion are distinguished. Four isomers of carbonyl sulfide dimer are resolved, and their structures are retrieved from the measured coincident momenta of the fragment ions generated in the concerted process, with the help of a classical trajectory simulation. As a result of our study, we can resolve the isomers of a weakly bound molecular cluster and determine their stereo configuration by using the Coulomb explosion. There is also the potential in femtosecond time-resolved imaging for structural evolution of molecular complexes in dissociation.

Abstract:Imaging the structure of molecules in transient-excited states remains a challenge due to the extreme requirements for spatial and temporal resolution. Ultrafast electron diffraction from aligned molecules provides atomic resolution and allows for the retrieval of structural information without the need to rely on theoretical models. Here we use ultrafast electron diffraction from aligned molecules and femtosecond laser mass spectrometry to investigate the dynamics in carbon disulfide following the interaction with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. We observe that the degree of alignment reaches an upper limit at laser intensities below the ionization threshold, and find evidence of structural deformation, dissociation and ionization at higher laser intensities.

Abstract:Conical intersections play a critical role in excited-state dynamics of polyatomic molecules because they govern the reaction pathways of many nonadiabatic processes. However, ultrafast probes have lacked sufficient spatial resolution to image wave-packet trajectories through these intersections directly. Here, we present the simultaneous experimental characterization of one-photon and two-photon excitation channels in isolated CF3I molecules using ultrafast gas-phase electron diffraction. In the two-photon channel, we have mapped out the real-space trajectories of a coherent nuclear wave packet, which bifurcates onto two potential energy surfaces when passing through a conical intersection. In the one-photon channel, we have resolved excitation of both the umbrella and the breathing vibrational modes in the CF3 fragment in multiple nuclear dimensions. These findings benchmark and validate ab initio nonadiabatic dynamics calculations.

Abstract:The van der Waals interactions are responsible for a large diversity of structures and functions in chemistry, biology, and materials. Discussion of van der Waals interactions has focused on the attractive potential energy that varies as the inverse power of the distance between the two interacting partners. The origin of the attractive force is widely discussed as being due to the correlated fluctuations of electron charges that lead to instantaneous dipole-induced dipole attractions. Here, we use the inelastic tunneling probe to image the potential energy surface associated with the van der Waals interactions of xenon atoms.

Due to the Coulomb repulsive force, multiply charged molecular ions will quickly dissociate into fragmental ions with high kinetic energy through the process of so-called Coulomb explosion. In this review article, we introduce the important achievements, potential applications and future development of laser-driven Coulomb explosion of molecules based on the study of Coulomb explosion of molecules by intense femtosecond laser pulses at Peking University.

Abstract:We have systematically studied Coulomb explosion of nitrogen and oxygen molecules in intense 8 and 24 fs laser pulses. In the experiment, we explicitly separated all explosion pathways through coincident measurements. The high resolution kinetic energy releases (KERs) and the exotic angular distributions of atomic ions provide direct evidence that Coulomb explosion occurs through non-Coulombic states. In the theory, we calculated dissociation potential energy curves (PECs) of nitrogen and oxygen molecules and their multicharged molecular ions using multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory. The results indicate that Coulomb potentials are close to the accurate PECs of multicharged molecular ions only when the internuclear distance is larger than 3 angstrom. In comparison with the experimental observations and the theoretical calculations, we determined the internuclear distance when Coulombic explosion occurs. It is near the equilibrium distance of the neutral molecules in the case of 8 fs laser pulses and expands gradually with the increase of the charge state of the molecular ions in the case of 24 fs laser pulses.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the three-body fragmentation dynamics of CO(2) initiated by intense femtosecond laser pulses. Sequential and nonsequential fragmentations were precisely separated and identified for CO(2)(3+) to break up into O(+) + C(+) + O(+) ions. With accurate measurements of three-dimensional momentum vectors of the correlated atomic ions and calculations of the high-level ab initio potential of CO(2)(3+), we reconstructed the geometric structure of CO(2)(3+) before fragmentation, which turns out to be very close to that of the neutral CO(2) molecule before laser irradiation. Our study indicated that Coulomb explosion is a promising approach for imaging geometric structures of polyatomic molecules if the fragmentation dynamics can be clearly clarified and the appropriate dissociation potential is provided for multiply charged molecular ions.

Abstract:Dynamic processes of CO2 are experimentally studied in intense femtosecond laser fields with laser intensity varying from 1 1013 W/cm2 to 6 1014 W/cm2. When the laser intensity is below the ionization threshold, a coherent rotational wave-packet is formed for CO2 at room temperature through nonadiabatic rotational excitation. The evolution of the wave-packet leads to transient alignment. The field-free alignment revives periodically after the laser pulse is over. The revival structure can be modified by a second laser pulse for the rotational wave-packet through precisely adjusting the time delays between the two laser pulses. When the laser intensity excesses the ionization threshold, ionization and Coulomb explosion occur. The atomic ions Cm+ (m = 13) and On+ (n = 13) observed in the experiment exhibit highly anisotropic angular distributions relative to the laser polarization. Using two linearly polarized laser pulses with crossed polarization, we conclude that the anisotropic angular distribution results from dynamic alignment, in which the rising edge of the laser pulse aligns the neutral CO2 along the laser polarization direction prior to ionization.

Abstract:Abstract Real-time imaging of transient structure of the electronic excited state is fundamentally critical to understand and control ultrafast molecular dynamics. The ejection of electrons from the inner-shell and valence level can lead to the population of different excited states, which trigger manifold ultrafast relaxation processes, however, the accurate imaging of such electronic state-dependent structural evolutions is still lacking. Here, by developing the laser-induced electron recollision-assisted Coulomb explosion imaging approach and molecular dynamics simulations, snapshots of the vibrational wave-packets of the excited (A) and ground states (X) of D 2 O + are captured simultaneously with sub-10 picometre and few-femtosecond precision. We visualise that θ DOD and R OD are significantly increased by around 50 ∘ and 10 pm, respectively, within approximately 8 fs after initial ionisation for the A state, and the R OD further extends 9 pm within 2 fs along the ground state of the dication in the present condition. Moreover, the R OD can stretch more than 50 pm within 5 fs along autoionisation state of dication. The accuracies of the results are limited by the simulations. These results provide comprehensive structural information for studying the fascinating molecular dynamics of water, and pave the way towards to make a movie of excited state-resolved ultrafast molecular dynamics and light-induced chemical reaction.

Abstract:We present measurements of photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) for the ionization of aligned CO2 molecules by an extreme ultraviolet laser pulse (17–45 eV) that is produced via high-harmonic generation, and that is polarized perpendicularly to the alignment laser axis. Differential PADs are recorded by taking the difference between two measurements for aligned and anti-aligned molecules. The results are compared with ab initio multi-channel R-matrix calculations, which are extended to include the computation of PADs. The calculations agree very well with the experiment, and are resolved with respect to the internal state of the ion and the polarization of the ionizing laser field relative to the molecular frame. For a sufficiently high, but experimentally achievable degree of alignment, the nodal structure of the molecular orbital becomes visible in the PAD.

Abstract:Dissociative ionization dynamics were studied experimentally for CO2 driven by intense laser pulses. Three-dimensional momentum vectors of correlated atomic ions were obtained for each three-body fragmentation event using triple ion coincidence measurement. Newton diagram demonstrated that three-body fragmentation of CO2 (n+) (n = 3-6) can occur through Coulomb explosion process and sequential fragmentation process depending on the fragmentation channels. The experimental data from these two processes were disentangled by using correlation diagram of correlated ions. Based on the accurate Coulomb explosion data, we reconstructed the bond angle distributions of CO2 (n+) at the moment of fragmentation, which are close to that of neutral CO2 before laser irradiation.

Abstract:We have experimentally and theoretically studied the fragmentation dynamics of argon trimer (Ar-3) in intense laser fields. By coincidently measuring the momentum vectors, we obtained the emission geometry of the three fragmental ions produced in the three-body fragmentation process. In addition to the direct Coulomb explosion channels, we observed the indirect Coulomb explosion channels with Rydberg excitation. We have further developed a classical polyatomic molecular ensemble model, in which all interactions among electrons and nuclei are fully included, to simulate the fragmentation dynamics of argon trimer in intense laser fields. The experimental observations have been reproduced by the model calculation. The simulations show that the Rydberg excitation modifies the kinetic energy release as well as the emission geometry of fragmental ions during the explosion process. The study provides insight into the correlation dynamics of electrons and nuclei of many-body physics driven by intense laser fields.

Abstract:Abstract Using single-shot velocity map imaging technique, explosion imaging of different ion species ejected from 50 nm SiO 2 nanoparticles are obtained excitedly by strong near-infrared and ultraviolet femtosecond laser fields. Characteristic momentum distributions showing forward emission of the ions at low excitation intensities and shock wave behaviors at high intensities are observed. When the excitation intensity is close to the dissociative ionization threshold of the surface molecules, the resulting ion products can be used to image the instant near-field distributions. The underlying dynamics of shock formation are simulated by using a Coulomb explosion model. Our results allow one to distinguish the ultrafast strong-field response of various molecular species in nanosystems and will open a new way for further exploration of the underlying dynamics of laser-and-nanoparticle interactions.

Direct Imaging of Laser-driven Ultrafast Molecular Rotation

Abstract:We present a method for visualizing laser-induced, ultrafast molecular rotational wave packet dynamics. We have developed a new 2-dimensional Coulomb explosion imaging setup in which a hitherto-impractical camera angle is realized. In our imaging technique, diatomic molecules are irradiated with a circularly polarized strong laser pulse. The ejected atomic ions are accelerated perpendicularly to the laser propagation. The ions lying in the laser polarization plane are selected through the use of a mechanical slit and imaged with a high-throughput, 2-dimensional detector installed parallel to the polarization plane. Because a circularly polarized (isotropic) Coulomb exploding pulse is used, the observed angular distribution of the ejected ions directly corresponds to the squared rotational wave function at the time of the pulse irradiation. To create a real-time movie of molecular rotation, the present imaging technique is combined with a femtosecond pump-probe optical setup in which the pump pulses create unidirectionally rotating molecular ensembles. Due to the high image throughput of our detection system, the pump-probe experimental condition can be easily optimized by monitoring a real-time snapshot. As a result, the quality of the observed movie is sufficiently high for visualizing the detailed wave nature of motion. We also note that the present technique can be implemented in existing standard ion imaging setups, offering a new camera angle or viewpoint for the molecular systems without the need for extensive modification.
