Abstract:Metal-organic framework/silica composite (SSU) were prepared by growing UiO-66 on the amino-functionalized SiO 2 core-shell spheres (SiO 2 @ d SiO 2 ) via a simple one-pot synthesis approach. By controlling the concentration of Zr 4+ , the obtained SSU have two different morphologies: spheres-on-sphere and layer-on-sphere. The spheres-on-sphere structure is formed by the aggregation of UiO-66 nanocrystals on the surface of SiO 2 @ d SiO 2 spheres. SSU-5 and SSU-20, which contain spheres-on-sphere composites have mesopores with a pore size of about 45 nm in addition to the characteristic micropores of UiO-66 with a pore size of 1 nm. In addition, UiO-66 nanocrystals were grown both inside and outside the pores of SiO 2 @ d SiO 2 , resulting in a 27% loading of UiO-66 in the SSU. The layer-on-sphere is the surface of SiO 2 @ d SiO 2 covered with a layer of UiO-66 nanocrystals. SSU with this structure has only a characteristic pore size of about 1 nm belonging to UiO-66 and is therefore not suitable as a packed stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography. The SSU spheres were packed into columns and tested for the separation of xylene isomers, aromatics, biomolecules, acidic and basic analytes. With both micropores and mesopores, SSU with spheres-on-sphere structure achieved baseline separation of both small and large molecules. Efficiencies up to 48150, 50452 and 41318 plates m −1 were achieved for m -xylene, p -xylene and o -xylene, respectively. The relative standard deviations of the retention times of anilines for run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column were all less than 6.1%. The results show that the SSU with spheres-on-sphere structure has great potential for high performance chromatographic separation.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) show promise to be employed as stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), however, the microporous structures of MOFs seriously restrict the diffusion and mass transfer of solute molecules, leading to a low column efficiency. In this paper, the fabrication of hierarchically porous UiO-66@SiO 2 (HP- UiO-66@SiO 2 ) core-shell microspheres via H 2 O 2 etching has been proposed as a viable approach to enhance the separation performance of MOFs-based columns for HPLC. Through the direct treatment of the preliminary prepared UiO-66@SiO 2 microspheres with H 2 O 2 etching, HP-UiO-66@SiO 2 core-shell microspheres were successfully synthesized with an enlarged pore size of up to 9 nm, facilitating efficient mass transfer in chromatographic separation. The prepared HP-UiO-66@SiO 2 core-shell microspheres were then explored as stationary phase in HPLC to separate the nonpolar alkyl benzene homologues, the polar aromatic alcohol homologues and the xylene isomers. The results indicated that the baseline separations of these solutes were achieved successfully with narrow peak width and higher resolution than the UiO-66@SiO 2 column. The HP-UiO-66@SiO 2 column exhibited superior separation performance, reaching a maximum plate number of 134459/m for fluorene, and showing good reproducibility. As a result, this template-free approach suggests that the fabrication of hierarchically porous MOFs@silica core-shell microspheres is a successful approach to enhance the column efficiency of MOFs-based columns in HPLC.

Abstract:Spherical and well-dispersed silica/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/PSA) core-shell particles have been synthesized using an improved phase-inversion process. The resulting particles were successfully used as supports for polyolefin catalysts in the production of polyethylene with broadmolecular weight distribution. Through the vapor phase, instead of the liquid phase in the traditional process, a non-solvent was introduced into a mixture of micrometer-sized SiO2 and PSA solution. The core-shell structure of the resulting SiO2/PSA microspheres was confirmed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transfer infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. In order to avoid agglomeration of particles and to obtain a good dispersion of the SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres, the non-solvent was added slowly. As the concentration of PSA solution increased, the surface morphology of the core-shell particles became looser and more irregular. However, the surface area and the pore volume remained the same under varying PSA concentrations. The SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres obtained were used as a catalyst carrier system in which the core supported (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2 and the shell supported TiCl4. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization results indicated that the zirconocene and titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts were compatible in the hybrid catalyst, showing high activities. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) packed in the column have been a promising candidate as the stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, the direct packing of irregular MOF powder could raise some problems like high back pressure and low column efficiency in the HPLC separation. In this work, UiO-66 capable of separating xylenes was supported effectively on the surface of themonodisperse spherical silica microspheres by one-pot method. The hybridization of UiO-66 and silica microspheres (termed UiO-66@SiO2 shell-core composite) was prepared by stirring the suspension of the precursors of UiO-66 and-COOH terminated silica in the N,N-dimethylformamide with heating. The shell-core composite material UiO66@SiO2 was characterized by SEM, TEM, PXRD and FTIR. Then, it was used as a packing material for the chromatographic separation of xylene isomers. Xylene isomers including o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene were efficiently separated on the column with high resolution and good reproducibility. Moreover, the UiO-66@SiO2 shell-core composites packed column still remained reverse shape selectivity as UiO-66 possessed, and the retention of xylenes was probably ascribed to the hydrophobic effect between analytes and the aromatic rings of the UiO-66 shell. The UiO-66@SiO2 shell-core composites obtained in this study have some potential for the separation of structural isomers in HPLC. Controlled Fabrication of Silica@Covalent Triazine Polymer Core-Shell Spheres as a Reversed-Phase/Hydrophilic Interaction Mixed-Mode Chromatographic Stationary Phase

Abstract:The unique properties of covalent triazine-based organic framework/polymers, including large surface area, hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced adsorption, and economical preparation, make it a promising candidate as a stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. However, irregular shapes and wide size distributions of such particles hinder column packing, resulting in a low column efficiency or a high back pressure. Herein, we describe the fabrication of SiO2@ covalent triazine-based organic polymer (CTP) core-shell microspheres with a distinct sphere-coating-sphere appearance using aminosilica as the supporting substrate to grow the CTP shell. By adjusting the amount of reactants, the thickness of the CTP shell, which consists of triazine and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene monomers, was easily controlled. The developed core-shell microspheres were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, and N2 adsorption experiments. The synergism of the triazine and aromatic moieties on CTP provides the new stationary phase with multiple retention mechanisms, including hydrophobic, π-π, electron donor-acceptor, hydrogen-bonding interactions, and so forth. On the basis of these interactions, successful separation and higher shape selectivity were achieved among several analytes that vary in polarity under both reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography conditions. Therefore, SiO2@CTP microspheres combine the advantages of good column packing properties of the uniform monodisperse silica microspheres and the recognition performance of CTP, generating flexible selectivity and application prospect for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic analytes.
Applicability of core-shell SiO2 microspheres with a high TiO2 loading as stationary phase for HPLC

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Due to its high chemical stability, sufficient rigidity and zwitterionic ion exchange properties, TiO2 can be considered as an alternative stationary phase material to SiO2 for high performance liquid chromatography. TiO2 stationary phase is usually prepared by coating TiO2 onto SiO2 support by sol-gel method. However, in the traditional coating method, in order to overcome the rapid hydrolysis rate of tetrabutyl orthotitanate, only a very low concentration of tetrabutyl orthotitanate can be used, resulting in a low loading of TiO2 on the support.RESULTS: TiO2 core-shell spheres with a good monodispersity were prepared using 0.25 mol L-1 tetrabutyl orthotitanate. The specific surface area, pore volume, pore diameter and TiO2 loading of the TiO2 core-shell spheres were 66 m2 g-1, 0.15 cm3 g-1, 9.8 nm and 57%, respectively. The core-shell spheres were derivatized with n-octadecyltrichlorosilane and then packed into a stainless steel column to test the separation performance for neutral, basic and acidic samples in liquid chromatography. A baseline separation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons was achieved, showing a column efficiency for fluorene of 118075 plates m-1. The prepared stationary phase was also used to separate acidic and basic mixtures, and column efficiencies of 54500 and 25836 plates m-1 were obtained for N,N-dinitroaniline and p-chlorophenol, respectively. The relative standard deviations of the retention times of polyaromatic hydrocarbons for run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column repeatability were all below 5.1%.SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY: This work demonstrated that TiO2 can be coated in the pores of the shell of SiO2 core-shell spheres with high TiO2 loading using a high concentration of tetrabutyl orthotitanate as the titania source. The experimental results show that the TiO2 coated core-shell spheres can be a good alternative stationary phase for liquid chromatography.

Abstract:Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) have potential application in enantioseparation due to their advantages, such as large surface area, abundant chiral recognition sites and good chemical stability in organic solvents. However, the application of CCOFs in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for enantioseparation has been rarely reported because of the shortcomings of CCOFs, such as light weight, irregular shape, and wide particle size distribution. In order to overcome the above shortcomings, a one-pot synthetic method was adopted to prepare a core-shell composite (β2) via the growth of chiral β-CD COF on the surface of amino-functionalized SiO2 microspheres. The as-prepared β2 microspheres were used as a stationary phase for HPLC enantioseparation. The resolution ability of the β2-packed column toward various chiral compounds was investigated using n-hexane/isopropanol as the mobile phase. The results show that the chiral β2-packed column exhibited excellent chiral recognition ability for 24 pairs of chiral compounds with good reproducibility. These successful applications indicate that the preparation of the chiral 2 core-shell microspheres as a novel stationary phase for enantioseparation has good application prospects in HPLC.

Abstract:Core-shell silica particles with fibrous shell structure and tunable pore size were prepared by using a dultemplate method. The pore size of the core-shell silica particles was affected greatly by the amount of octadecylamine, which as used as cosurfactant. The pore size could be enlarged from 7.1 nm to 22.3 nm while keeping the unique fibrous shell structure. After derivatized with C18, the separation performances of these particles with a wider pore size were investigated. The column efficiency was as high as 219,789 plates m (1) for dimethylnaphthalene. Baseline separation of proteins ranging in size from 12 to 66 kD was achieved within 5 min. The separation results demonstrate that the synthesized core-shell silica particles would be a promising packing material in the rapid and high-resolution separation of both small solutes and macromolecules. Abstract:Vigorously developing new high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases to meet the versatile separation requirements is still an important issue in the field of analytical chemistry. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a new type of three-dimensional network porous material with high specific surface area, good chemical stability and superhydrophobicity. Herein, we firstly report the synthesis and applications of CMPs@SiO2 material for HPLC stationary phase. The CMPs@SiO2 material can be in situ fabricated via Sonogashira coupling of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene on the surface of spherical silica. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the synthesized stationary phase material were investigated by a series of characterization methods. Due to the superhydrophobic nature of the CMPs@SiO2 material, the packed CMPs@SiO2 HPLC column displays ultrastrong chromatographic retention and can be used for separation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds with good selectivity. Significantly, CMPs@SiO2 column can be performed for separation with pure acetonitrile as the eluent. Thus, the new column was successfully exploited for monitor and analysis of the hydrolysis of silane coupling agents. Furthermore, based on its oleophilicity, this report firstly utilized the CMPs@SiO2 material to identify and analyze the quality of cooking oils through one-step enrichment and subsequent HPLC separation. We will further exploit to fabricate versatile CMPs-based stationary phases, highlighting their potential applications in different separation scopes.

Abstract:The AlOOH core/shell microspheres were successfully synthesized via a one-step template-free hydrothermal route. By simply changing the ratio of alcohol to water, core/shell microspheres constructed with nanoplatelets and their curling structures could be selectively synthesized. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of AlOOH spheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The formation of core/shell structures may involve aggregation of amorphous building clusters into spheres and their subsequent reaction, dissolution, and re-deposition process. The morphology, structure, and composition of the spheres are investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the boehmite core–shell microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. The as-prepared AlOOH core–shell superstructures are powerful in the removal of Congo red pollutant from waste water.
A composite hydrogel modified silica stationary phase for mixed‐mode liquid chromatography

Abstract:A novel composite hydrogel functionalized silica core-shell stationary phase was prepared by the surface modification of silica sphere. The successful synthesis of the new stationary phase (T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 ) was proven by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. Due to the coexistence of amide, hydroxyl, long carbon chain and UiO-66-NH 2 in composite hydrogel shell, the obtained stationary phase can be used in hydrophilic/reversed-phase liquid chromatography with multiple retention mechanisms, such as hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π - π interactions. The chromatographic retention behavior of T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 demonstrated that the new stationary phase showed excellent separation performance for both polar analytes (such as alkaloids, saccharides, etc.) and nonpolar analytes (such as substituted benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), etc.). Furthermore, compared with NH 2 column and commercial C18 column, the T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 exhibited a certain superiority. Moreover, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of PAHs' retention time with eight replicates consecutive elution was found to range from 0.03% to 0.17%. Therefore, the successful use of T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 in mixed‐mode liquid chromatography expanded the potential applications of hydrogels in the field of separation.

In Situ Growth of Covalent Organic Framework Shells on Silica Microspheres for Application in Liquid Chromatography

Abstract:A facile, in situ growth strategy for the synthesis of monodispersed COF@SiO2 microspheres is reported. The microspheres have uniform and controllable COF shells, and are used as the stationary phase for HPLC. The TpBD COF, constructed from 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (BD), is taken as the COF shell, and aminosilica (SiO2 -NH2 ) is employed as the core to support the TpBD shell. The TpBD shell thickness is adjusted by controlling the concentrations of the Tp and BD monomers. The TpBD@SiO2 packed columns show excellent hydrophobic selectivity, and good reproducibility for the separation of neutral (toluene and ethylbenzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), acidic (hydroquinone, p-cresol, and p-chlorophenol), and basic molecules (nucleobases, nucleosides, and deoxynucleosides).

Abstract:Fast and efficient separation by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is challenging for a wide range of samples. In recent years, core-shell silica micro-spheres have been widely investigated and used for highly efficient and fast separation under reasonably low pressure for small solutes, biopolymers, and complex samples. In this paper, the mechanism for fast separation and preparation methods of core-shell silica microspheres are introduced, along with their application for HPLC-based separation of small molecules, peptides, and biological macromolecules in HPLC. The developing trends of using core-shell micro-spheres in HPLC are also presented.
In situ growth of COF-rLZU1 on the surface of silica sphere as stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:The composite materials consist of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and silica have been regarded as a kind of promising stationary phases due to combination of the large specific surface area and good mechanical strength of porous silica microspheres and the porous structure and the excellent stability of COFs. Herein, a novel COFs-silica composite (SiO2@rLZU1, reduced Lan Zhou University-1) was prepared via an in-situ growth strategy with a 32 nm-thick COFs layer on the surface of silica and a 2.2 nm-thick COFs layer on the inner surface of the mesopores of spherical silica (5 μm, 120 Å). With secondary amine and phenyl groups, the novel stationary phase provided hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π-π interactions when used in HPLC, showing different selectivity from typical reversed-phase stationary phases. Probe molecules with aromatic moieties varying in polarity, including acidic (phenol, pyrocatechol, and pyrogallol), basic (aniline, 4-chloroaniline, and 4-nitroaniline) and neutral (benzene homologues) compounds, were all baseline separated on the SiO2@rLZU1 column, indicating its excellent separation performance. Besides, the SiO2@rLZU1 column also exhibited great repeatability with intraday RSDs of the retention time of three anilines less than 0.31% (n = 6) and peak area less than 1.63% (n = 6). On the SiO2@rLZU1 column, satisfied results were achieved in the separation of real samples such as fullerenes and coking wastewater, suggesting the great potential of the as-synthesized stationary phase in HPLC applications.

Abstract:The preparation of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)@silica core-shell microspheres as the stationary phases mainly relied on the method of electrostatic interaction between the metal ions of MOFs and the silanol groups. Herein, the ligands of MOFs were preferentially modified to the surface of silica as connection points and seed crystals to connect or form the MOFs. In this way, the evenness of the MOFs particles on the silica surface was effectively improved, and the prepared composites possessed excellent reproducibility and stability, including acid-base stability. The relative standard deviation of the retention time for repeatability ranged from 0.1% to 0.26% and for stability retention time from 0.3% to 0.6%. Compared with commercial columns, the prepared stationary phase showed enhanced separation selectivity for separation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds containing alkaloids, nucleosides, antibiotics and alkylbenzenes, etc. The obtained column was used as a matrix for fast separation and analysis of antibiotics in actual samples. In short, the composites showed superior reproducibility, stability and satisfactory separation performance towards a variety of compounds in the studied conditions. It also provided another way to improve the evenness of MOFs particles on the surface of silica and enhance the stability of them under polar conditions.

One‐pot synthesis of pillar[5]quinone‐amine polymer coated silica as stationary phase for high‐performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:To expand the application of pillararene in chromatographic separation, we designed and fabricated a pillar[5]quinone‐amine polymer coated silica through quinone‐amine reaction by facile one‐pot synthesis method, which was applied as a stationary phase for high‐performance liquid chromatography. Separation of hydrophobic compounds, hydrophilic compounds, halogenated aromatic compounds, and 11 aromatic positional isomers was achieved successfully in this stationary phase. Reverse‐phase separation mode and hydrophilic‐interaction separation mode were proved to exist, indicating the potential application of the mix‐mode stationary phase. Studies of chromatographic retention behavior and molecular simulation showed that multiple interactions might play an important role in the separation process, including hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen‐bonding interaction, aromatic π‐π interaction, electron donor‐acceptor interaction, and host‐guest interaction. Column repeatability and stability were tested, which showed relative standard deviations of retention time less than 0.2% for continuous 11 injections, and the durability relative standard deviations of retention time were less than 0.91% after 90 days. This novel design strategy would broaden the application of pillararene‐based covalent organic polymer in chromatography and separation science.

[One-pot synthesis of a poly(styrene-acrylic acid) copolymer-modified silica stationary phase and its applications in mixed-mode liquid chromatography]

Abstract:As modified ligands with a wide range of sources, abundant functional groups, and good biocompatibility, polymers have been widely used in the development of silica-based chromatographic stationary phases. In this study, a poly(styrene-acrylic acid) copolymer-modified silica stationary phase (SiO2@P(St-b-AA)) was prepared via one-pot free-radical polymerization. In this stationary phase, styrene and acrylic acid were used as functional repeating units for polymerization and vinyltrimethoxylsilane (VTMS) was used as a silane coupling agent to link the copolymer and silica. Various characterization methods, such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, and Zeta potential analysis, confirmed the successful preparation of the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase, which had a well-maintained uniform spherical and mesoporous structure. The retention mechanisms and separation performance of the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase in multiple separation modes were then evaluated. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic analytes as well as ionic compounds were selected as probes for different separation modes, and changes in the retention of the analytes under various chromatographic conditions, including different methanol or acetonitrile contents and buffer pH values, were investigated. In reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) mode, the retention factors of alkyl benzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the stationary phase decreased with increasing methanol content in the mobile phase. This finding could be attributed to the hydrophobic and π-π interactions between the benzene ring and analytes. The retention changes of alkyl benzenes and PAHs revealed that the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase, similar to the C18 stationary phase, exhibited a typical reversed-phase retention behavior. In hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mode, as the acetonitrile content increased, the retention factors of hydrophilic analytes gradually increased, and a typical hydrophilic interaction retention mechanism was inferred. In addition to hydrophilic interaction, the stationary phase also demonstrated hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions with the analytes. Compared with the C18 and Amide stationary phases prepared by our groups, the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase exhibited excellent separation performance for the model analytes in the RPLC and HILIC modes. Owing to the presence of charged carboxylic acid groups in the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase, exploring its retention mechanism in ionic exchange chromatography (IEC) mode is of great importance. The effect of the mobile phase pH on the retention time of organic bases and acids was further studied to explore the electrostatic interaction between the stationary phase and charged analytes. The results revealed that the stationary phase has weak cation exchange ability toward organic bases and electrostatically repels organic acids. Moreover, the retention of organic bases and acids on the stationary phase was influenced by the analyte structure and mobile phase. Thus, the SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase could provide multiple interactions, as demonstrated by the separation modes described above. The SiO2@P(St-b-AA) stationary phase showed excellent performance and reproducibility in the separation of mixed samples with different polar components, indicating that it has promising application potential in mixed-mode liquid chromatography. Further investigation of the proposed method confirmed its repeatability and stability. In summary, this study not only described a novel stationary phase that could be used in RPLC, HILIC, and IEC modes but also presented a facile "one-pot" preparation approach that could provide a new route for the development of novel polymer-modified silica stationary phases.

Abstract:A facile method for efficient synthesis of core-shell composite material was proposed. In this method, the silica microspheres were co-modified with metal organic framework (MOF-235) and polyethylene glycol polymer (PEG) and used as mixed-mode stationary phase (@silica) for high-performance liquid chromatography. Elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller etc. methods were used to investigate the properties of the core-shell composite material. The @silica stationary phase showed flexible selectivity for the separation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds especially for the separation of nine alkaloids, which showed superior hydrophilic separation performance than previous MOF-based composite stationary phases. Some factors including the pH of buffer salt, the ratio of organic phase and water phase in the mobile phase have been investigated, suggesting that the chromatographic retention mechanism of the column was a mixed mode of hydrophilic and reversed phase. The composite material also showed excellent chromatographic repeatability with the RSDs of the retention time found to be 0.2% to 0.6% (n = 10) and the standard addition test in the actual sample proved that it can be used for practical sample analysis. In short, it provided a general way for preparing MOFs-based composites as mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases, and changed the current status of MOF-based composite materials as single mode chromatographic stationary phases.

Preparation and Functionalization of Mesoporous Silica Spheres As Packing Materials for HPLC

Abstract:This paper presents the integrated results of a series of new methods for preparing mesoporous silica spheres as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) packing materials. The separation performance of the mesoporous spheres materials has also been determined. Micrometer-sized silica spheres with uniform spherical morphologies and ordered mesostructures were first successfully synthesized by the method employing a water-soluble polymer-assisted assembly. Then the templates for getting ordered mesoporous materials with high-density silanol groups were removed by using hydrothermal oxidation. Finally the silica spheres were functionalized with C8 alkyl groups by surface modification under hydrothermal conditions. The resultant functionalized silica spheres were demonstrated to be excellent packing materials for HPLC.
Silica microparticles modified with ionic liquid bonded chitosan as hydrophilic moieties for preparation of high-performance liquid chromatographic stationary phases

Abstract:Two novel stationary phases, 1-(4-bromobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide bonded chitosan modified silica and 1-(4-bromobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide bonded chitosan derivatized calix[4]arene modified silica stationary phase, were synthesized using 1-(4-bromobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide bonding chitosan as a polarity regulator solving the limitation of the strong hydrophobicity of calixarene in the application of hydrophilic field. The resulting materials were characterized by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Based on the hydrophilicity endowed by 1-(4-bromobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide bonded chitosan, the retention mode of ILC-Sil and ILCC4-Sil could be effectively switched from the hydrophilic mode to a hydrophilic/hydrophobic mixed mode and could simultaneously provide various interactions with solutes, including hydrophilic, π-π, ion-exchange, inclusion, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. On the basis of these interactions, successful separation and higher shape selectivity were achieved among compounds that vary in polarity under both reverse-phase and hydrophilic interactive liquid chromatography conditions. Moreover, the ILCC4-Sil was successfully applied to the determination of morphine in actual samples using solid-phase extraction and mass spectrometry. The LOD and LOQ were 15 pg/mL and 54 pg/mL, respectively. This work presents an exceptionally flexible adjustment strategy for the retention and selectivity of a silica stationary phase by tuning the modification group.
