Abstract:To realize the potential of ionic liquid functionalized silica to prepare mixed-mode and chiral stationary phases, two ionic liquid silane reagents with different anions were synthesized via a high-efficiency click reaction. Then they were decorated onto the surface of silica by a one-step bonding reaction. The functionalized silica was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental analysis (EA). Two stationary phases provided satisfactory performance when compared with a commercial mixed-mode column. Notably, Sil-C10Im-D-BCS with D-3-bromocamphor-8-sulfonate (D-BCS) as anion presented chiral separation capacity towards 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-1-naphthol. The separation mechanism was investigated through multiple pathways, and the results revealed that the prepared stationary phases can retain and separate solutes through multiple interactions, like hydrophobic effect , ion exchange, hydrogen-bond interaction, etc. Quantum chemical calculation (QC) was employed to obtain the optimized structures and the binding energy of anions to cations. The results provided some insights into the retention mechanism from a molecular perspective. This work demonstrated the superiority of ionic liquid functionalized silica as mixed-mode stationary phases and the potential of chiral ionic liquid as chiral selectors.

Preparation and evaluation of two silica-based hydrophilic-hydrophobic and acid-base balanced stationary phases via in-situ surface polymerization

Abstract:Two new hydrophilic-hydrophobic and acid-base balanced liquid chromatographic stationary phases were obtained by using two long-chain monomers including undecylenic acid (UA) and oleic acid (OA) combined with short-chain 4-vinyl pyridine (Py) in-situ polymerized on silica microspheres surfaces, respectively. These two stationary phases can be used for reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) modes. Hydrophilic, hydrophobic, acidic and basic analytes can be separated on two new stationary phases in RPLC or HILIC mode. Compared with commercial hydrophobic C18 columns and other HILIC columns, two new stationary phases have excellent selectivity and separation performance in the separation of 9 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 10 aromatic acids, 10 anilines and 5 oxazolidinones, respectively. This novel polymer-functionalized silica design strategy has opened up new ideas for the future of mixed-mode stationary phases with multiple functions and specificity.

Abstract:A novel composite hydrogel functionalized silica core-shell stationary phase was prepared by the surface modification of silica sphere. The successful synthesis of the new stationary phase (T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 ) was proven by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. Due to the coexistence of amide, hydroxyl, long carbon chain and UiO-66-NH 2 in composite hydrogel shell, the obtained stationary phase can be used in hydrophilic/reversed-phase liquid chromatography with multiple retention mechanisms, such as hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π - π interactions. The chromatographic retention behavior of T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 demonstrated that the new stationary phase showed excellent separation performance for both polar analytes (such as alkaloids, saccharides, etc.) and nonpolar analytes (such as substituted benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), etc.). Furthermore, compared with NH 2 column and commercial C18 column, the T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 exhibited a certain superiority. Moreover, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of PAHs' retention time with eight replicates consecutive elution was found to range from 0.03% to 0.17%. Therefore, the successful use of T-Sil@PAM/SA/UiO-66-NH 2 in mixed‐mode liquid chromatography expanded the potential applications of hydrogels in the field of separation.

Abstract:A label-free fluorescent probe based on autofluorescent hyperbranched poly(amide amine) (HPAMAM) for copper ions was designed. HPAMAM is a cationic polymer containing many amino groups, which could bind Cu^2+ ions to form cupric amine complexes, leading to a selective quenching of the fluorescence intensity of HPAMAM via inner filter effect. The fluorescence intensity of HPAMAM decreased with increasing concentration of Cu^2+ ions and the linear response ranged from 0.05 to 25 μM ( R ^2 = 0.995), with the corresponding detection limit (3 σ / k ) of 17.15 nM. The HPAMAM fluorescent probe provided a simple, rapid, selective and sensitive fluorometric method for detecting Cu^2+ ions, which could be also applied for detection of Cu^2+ ions in real water samples.
Preparation of three structurally similar stationary phases with different ionizable terminal groups and evaluation of their retention performances under multiple modes in high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:Three structurally similar silane reagents with different terminal groups were prepared and bonded to silica to obtain three structurally similar stationary phases (Sil-Ph-COOH, Sil-Phe and Sil-Ph-NH 2 ). The prepared stationary phases were characterized through elemental analysis (EA) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). These three stationary phases provided acceptable retention repeatability (relative standard deviations between 0.08% and 0.13%) and high column efficiency (7.3 × 10 4 plates/m for uridine on Sil-Phe). The retention behavior of the three columns was investigated under different chromatographic conditions including different mobile phase ratio, salt concentration, pH etc. The retention mechanisms were explored by linear solvation energy relationships and Van't Hoff plots. Applications in separation under reversed phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and ion exchange chromatography (IEC) mode were investigated. The results showed that the retention capacity of the stationary phases with different terminal groups to the analytes is very different, especially for carboxylic acids, because the surface charges of amino groups and carboxyl groups under weakly acidic conditions produce different electrostatic effects with dissociated carboxylic acids. Finally, the Sil-Phe column was employed to detect ibuprofen extracted from pharmaceutical ibuprofen capsules and vitamins extracted from vitamin tablets.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are a promising material to develop stationary phases for mixed-mode chromatography (MMC). In order to investigate the effect of anion type and polymerization method of ionic liquid, this work prepared and compared two stationary phases (Sil-IM-Br and Sil-IM-SAG) based on the polymeric ionic liquid, one of which copolymerized cation and anion. Two stationary phases were characterized and provided satisfactory retention repeatability (RSD < 0.3 %) and column efficiency (84600 plates/m). Chromatographic conditions (ACN content, salt concentration, and pH) were varied to reveal the retention characters and interactions between stationary phases and solutes. The results showed that both two developed stationary phases can operate under the mixed mode of RPLC/HILIC/IEC, but diverse selectivity was provided. So, the retention mechanisms were studied by linear solvation energy relationship equation (LSER) and thermodynamic research. Two stationary phases showed totally different retention towards carboxylic acids, which resulted from the effect of anion bonded. Lastly, the developed stationary phases were applied to separate alkylbenzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under RPLC. Furthermore, 7 carboxylic acids and 7 nucleosides and bases and complex samples were successfully separated under HILIC mode, Sil-IM-Br and Sil-IM-SAG provide better performances and different selectivity when compared with commercial mixed-mode columns. This work proves that cationic and anionic copolymerization provides a new method for stationary phase design, and better selectivity can be obtained by changing the anions.

Abstract:In this work, a series of chiral phenethylamine synergistic tricarboxylic acid modified ,B-cyclodextrin bonded stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were synthesized via a sim-ple one-pot synthesis approach. Various racemates (aryl alcohols, flavanones, triazoles, benzoin, etc. ) were well separated on the tricarboxylic acid modified chiral stationary phases in both normal and reversed modes with good reproducibility and stability, and the influence of mobile phase composition on reso-lution (Rs) were deeply investigated. The RSD values of Rs for repeatability and column-to-column were below 1.28% and 3.05%, respectively. Abstract:Streptococcus pyogenes is an important cause of human morbidity and mortality worldwide. A wealth of genomic information related to this pathogen has facilitated exploration of the proteome, particularly in response to environmental conditions thought to mimic various aspects of pathogenesis. Proteomic approaches are also used to identify immunoreactive proteins for vaccine development and to identify proteins that may induce autoimmunity. These studies have revealed new mechanisms involved in regulating the S. pyogenes proteome, which has opened up new avenues in the study of S. pyogenes pathogenesis. This article describes the methods used, and progress being made towards characterizing the S. pyogenes proteome, including studies seeking to identify potential vaccine candidates.

Abstract:In this study, a mixed mode stationary phase for capillary liquid chromatography (cLC) was prepared by chemical modification of glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) bonded to the silica, named as Sil–EGDE–GABA. The Sil–EGDE–GABA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The retention of nucleotide bases at different acetonitrile levels in the mobile phase indicated that the stationary phase possessed both hydrophilic chromatography (HILIC) and reversed-phase chromatography (RPLC) characteristics. Positional isomers, aniline compounds and a mixture of polar–nonpolar analytes were separated in RPLC mode. The stationary phase exhibited different separation mechanisms in the separation of positional isomers, compared with a commercial ODS column. Sulfonamides and biogenic amines were successfully separated in HILIC mode. These results demonstrated the application possibilities of the prepared Sil–EGDE–GABA as packing materials in cLC.
Two-dimensional MOF Cu-BDC nanosheets/ILs@silica core-shell composites as mixed-mode stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:Here, silica microspheres were decorated with two-dimensional metal–organic frameworks (2D MOFs) nanosheets and ionic liquids, and evaluated as the mixed-mode stationary phase for chromatographic separation. The ionic liquids were used to assist the synthesis of 2D MOFs nanosheets, and also acted as adhesives among the nanosheets and silica. In contrast with the 2D MOFs-based column without ionic liquids and commercial columns, the prepared column exhibited enhanced chromatographic separation performance for partially hydrophilic compounds such as alkaloids, sulfonamides and antibiotics, etc. In addition to excellent chromatographic repeatability and stability, it has also been verified that the composites could be easily and repeatedly prepared. The relative standard deviation of the retention time of the same type of analyte between the three batches of materials was ranging from 0.21% to 1.7%. In short, these results indicated that the synthesized composites were promising separation material for liquid chromatography, which made it possible to broaden the application of 2D MOFs in the field of chromatography.

Abstract:There is a large and growing demand for the vigorous development of new high performance liquid chromatography stationary phases in order to solve complex phospholipids separation. Herein, phosphonium-based ionic liquid trioctyl(allyl)phosphonium bromide ([P888Allyl]Br) was first synthesized with trioctylphosphine and allyl bromide. With [P888Allyl]Br as the polymerizable monomer, polymerized phosphonium ionic liquid functionalized silica microsphere (PIL@SiO2) was further synthetized via click chemistry reaction. Significantly, based on the inherent amphiphilic nature of the introduced [P888Allyl]Br, the packed PIL@SiO2 column displayed hydrophilic/hydrophobic mixed-mode retention mechanisms. The PIL@SiO2 column can achieve separation of nucleic acid bases and nucleosides, sulfonamides, amides and anilines with excellent selectivity in a shorter separation time. The column efficiency reached 109,700 N/m for 2-iodoacetamide. One of the important characteristics of the PIL@SiO2 column is that both phospholipid classes and species can be efficiently separated via the same column, outperforming that of the commercial amino column. Furthermore, the application potential of the PIL@SiO2 column was further verified via separation of phospholipids extracted from soy lecithin. The proposed PIL@SiO2 column provides a promising candidate for separation of complex phospholipid samples.

Abstract:A novel zwitterionic polymer grafted silica stationary phase, Sil‐PZIC, was prepared by bonding poly(ethylene maleic anhydride) molecules on the surface of silica via multiple binding sites, followed by ammonolysis of maleic anhydride through a nucleophilic substitution reaction with ethylenediamine. The stationary phase was characterized by solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, zeta potential, and elemental analysis and the results show the successful encapsulation of zwitterionic polymer on the surface of silica. The chromatographic performance of Sil‐PZIC was investigated by using nucleosides and nucleic bases as test analytes The variation of retention and separation performance of these model compounds were investigated by varying the chromatographic conditions such as the components of mobile phase, salt concentration, and pH. The results show that the retention of the Sil‐PZIC phase was dominated by a hydrophilic partitioning mechanism accompanied by secondary interactions such as electrostatic and hydrogen bonding. In addition, saccharides and Amadori compounds were also well separated on the Sil‐PZIC, indicating that the Sil‐PZIC column has potential application for separation of the polar compound.

[Prosthetic replacement of condylar head for management of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To preliminarily evaluate the method of using titanium condylar protheses in management of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis. METHODS Between August 2006 and April 2008, titanium condylar replacement was performed in 5 male patients. Preoperative CT datum of patient was obtained and a resin model was then produced and used as a reference to select a suitable titanium condyle for reconstruction of the joint. In the operation, the bony ankylosis was removed. According to the preoperation planning, the selected prosthesis was inserted and fixed to the distal mandibular segment. The results were assessed by means of examinations and measurements postoperatively and during follow-up. RESULTS The 5 patients received alloplastic replacement of 6 condyles. Three patients were under follow-up and follow-up time ranged from 8 months to 2 years and 6 months. The mean mouth opening was 30 mm. Two patients had good occlusion and one patient developed a slight open bite. CONCLUSIONS Prosthetic condylar replacement can provide a choice for management of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Abstract:Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men from Western industrialized countries and a significant proportion of patients progress to advanced metastatic disease, for which currently no curative treatment exists. Therefore, new therapeutic approaches need to be considered. Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is an integral, non-shed type 2 membrane protein that is highly and specifically expressed on prostate epithelial cells and strongly upregulated in prostate cancer. PSMA is also present in the neovasculature of other solid tumors. These findings have spurred the development of PSMA-targeted therapies and first-generation products have entered clinical testing. The proposed strategies range from targeted toxins and radionuclides to immunotherapeutic agents. The present review provides an overview of these approaches.
Controlled Fabrication of Silica@Covalent Triazine Polymer Core-Shell Spheres as a Reversed-Phase/Hydrophilic Interaction Mixed-Mode Chromatographic Stationary Phase

Abstract:The unique properties of covalent triazine-based organic framework/polymers, including large surface area, hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced adsorption, and economical preparation, make it a promising candidate as a stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. However, irregular shapes and wide size distributions of such particles hinder column packing, resulting in a low column efficiency or a high back pressure. Herein, we describe the fabrication of SiO2@ covalent triazine-based organic polymer (CTP) core-shell microspheres with a distinct sphere-coating-sphere appearance using aminosilica as the supporting substrate to grow the CTP shell. By adjusting the amount of reactants, the thickness of the CTP shell, which consists of triazine and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene monomers, was easily controlled. The developed core-shell microspheres were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, and N2 adsorption experiments. The synergism of the triazine and aromatic moieties on CTP provides the new stationary phase with multiple retention mechanisms, including hydrophobic, π-π, electron donor-acceptor, hydrogen-bonding interactions, and so forth. On the basis of these interactions, successful separation and higher shape selectivity were achieved among several analytes that vary in polarity under both reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography conditions. Therefore, SiO2@CTP microspheres combine the advantages of good column packing properties of the uniform monodisperse silica microspheres and the recognition performance of CTP, generating flexible selectivity and application prospect for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic analytes.
Development and evaluation of new imidazolium-based zwitterionic stationary phases for hydrophilic interaction chromatography

Abstract:Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) has been widely used for separating polar compounds as a complement mode to reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The development of new stationary phases for HILIC is significant to improve the coverage of various polar and hydrophilic compounds. The present study described the preparation and application of novel imidazolium-based zwitterionic stationary phases. 1-Vinyl-3-(butyl-4-sulfonate) imidazolium was synthesized from 1-vinylimidazole and 1,4-butane sultone, then bonded to the surface of 3-mercaptopropyl modified silica particles (core-shell silica and totally porous silica) by "thiol-ene" click chemistry to obtain the resulting zwitterionic stationary phase with a positively charged imidazole ring and a negatively charged sulfonate group. The zwitterionic stationary phases exhibited good selectivity and favorable retention for a wide range of polar solutes (nucleosides, nucleic acid bases, benzoic organic acids, uric acid and its methyl derivatives, water-soluble vitamins) as compared to a bare silica column. The column efficiency could reach up to 100,000 theoretical plates/m with cytosine as the test solute. The retention changes of various types of test solutes were investigated under different chromatographic conditions including water content, pH, buffer salt concentration in mobile phase and column temperature. The results indicated that the retention of solutes on the stationary phase was the outcome of a mixed-mode retention mechanism (i.e. a combination of adsorptive and partitioning interactions). In conclusion, the new imidazolium-based zwitterionic stationary phases have shown excellent chromatographic behavior for a variety of polar solutes under HILIC mode, and have a great potential as a new type of stationary phases for HILIC.
Cyano-Modified Molecular Cage Silica Gel Stationary Phase: Multi-functional Chromatographic Performance by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract:This study successfully prepared different loading levels of cyano-functionalized RCC3 molecular cage silica gel stationary phase (RCC3-CN@SiO 2 ) through aldehyde-amine condensation reaction and subsequent modification strategies. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of RCC3-CN@SiO 2 chromatographic stationary phase. The research demonstrates that due to hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and size-selective porous structure, the stationary phase effectively separates moderately polar and weakly polar compounds in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) mode, exhibiting hydrophobic selectivity comparable to the commercial Daiso C18-RP columns. Additionally, the tertiary amine and cyanogen groups on the molecular cage surface enhance the interaction with polar compounds, successfully separating nucleosides, sulfonamides, amino acids, and sugars in hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) mode. Further applications in the separation analysis of acidic drugs, alkaline drugs, cinnamic acid natural products, and chiral compounds demonstrate the multifunctional chromatographic capabilities for diverse compound types. Compared to Unitary Diol commercial columns, the prepared stationary phase showed significant advantages in wide polarity range separation performance. Moreover, through nucleoside compound separation mode switching analysis, RCC3-CN@SiO 2 stationary phase further validates its favorable performance in both RPLC and HILIC modes, demonstrating extensive potential applications in the field of analytical chemistry. Importantly, the stationary phase exhibits efficient separation of nucleoside compounds in pure water systems, aligning with the principles of green analysis.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have turned out to be one of the best choices to fabricate mixed-mode stationary phases, this work aimed to investigate the possibility and merit of copolymerizing cations and anions as modifications. We prepared two ILs stationary phases, one of which was constructed by copolymerizing cation and anion ( p -vinylbenzene sulfonate). Two stationary phases were characterized and comprehensively evaluated. The stationary phases showed great repeatability (RSD <0.87%) and high efficiency (up to 83,810 plate/m). Both stationary phases can operate under a mixed mode of reversed phase/hydrophilic interaction/ion exchange chromatography (RPLC/HILIC/IEC). Chromatographic evaluation results revealed that copolymerized anions endow stationary phase superior selectivity under RPLC and HILIC modes, so hydrophobic terphenyls isomer (under ACN/H 2 O = 35/65) and hydrophilic nucleotides and bases (under ACN/100 mM NH 4 FA buffer = 90/10) are better separated. Organic and inorganic anions showed entirely different retention behaviors on two stationary phases, and the mechanism was investigated by linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) and thermodynamic analysis. This work proved that copolymerizing cations and anions of ILs could be a promising method to prepare stationary phases, the retention property and mechanism need further research.
