Abstract:Owing to its advantages, such as abundant resource, low cost, biodegradable and renewable, starch is becoming more and more attractive in the field of adhesive. However, since starch has some defects such as poor water-resistance and low strength when it is directly used as materials, physical or chemical modification is required to meet the demands for the various applications, and chemical modification is one of the important approaches to produce qualified adhesive. Recent research progresses in chemical modification of starch-based adhesives were reviewed from the aspects of oxidation, esterification, etherification, crosslinking, and grafting, and the development trend was pointed out.

Abstract:A novel 'green' starch-based adhesive for bonding aluminium has been developed. Detailed thermal analysis studies show that 'liquid starch' obtained during controlled thermolysis of starch could potentially eliminate the need for chromic and sulfuric acid treatments and non-renewable adhesives. It was found that these materials only act as adhesives in a narrow temperature range around 250 degrees C. Materials were investigated using thermal analysis, diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and mechanical analysis of single lap joints.
Combined role of stearic acid and maleic anhydride in the development of thermoplastic starch-based materials with ultrahigh ductility and durability

Abstract:The diverse properties reported for starch-based materials indicate their potential for use in the preparation of biodegradable flexible actuators. However, their natural brittleness and lack of durability after modification limit their practical application. Therefore, we propose a strategy for preparing flexible starch-based composites. The results of macro/micro property characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations indicated that using starch, maleic anhydride, and stearic acid (SA), the mobility of the starch chains was enhanced and retrogradation was inhibited through the synergistic effects induced by chain breaking, complex formation with SA, and esterification of the starch molecules. In addition, the elongation at break of the modified starch (MS) reached 2070 %, and considerable ductility (>1000 %) as well as well-complexed structure were maintained after six months. Furthermore, the MS was able to undergo self-healing after fracture or a temperature-controlled stiffness transition. Moreover, it underwent complete degradation in soil within 30 d. Finally, an actuator was prepared by doping the MS with nano-Fe 3 O 4 particles to realize a dual magnetic and optical response. Dynamic monitoring was also achieved based on the electrical signal, thereby demonstrating the broad application scope of this material in the development of biodegradable flexible actuators.

Abstract:A procedure is described of grafting the acrylic acid onto an oxygen/ozone-activated metallocene poly(ethylene-co-propylene). Consequently, the grafted copolymer is applied as a component in a metallocene polyolefin-based hot-melt adhesive composition with increased adhesion. The surface properties and adhesion strength of the prepared hot-melt adhesive (HMA) were determined and used to account for the effect of grafting. The application of grafted polyolefin as one of the components of the HMA mixture provides significant increase in adhesive strength, and it also results in increased compatibility and negligible effects on the technological parameters of the final composition. The obtained results may have significant impact for the practical application of prepared HMA for book bonding.

Abstract:Consumer trends towards environmentally friendly products are driving plastics industries to investigate more benign alternatives to petroleum-based polymers. In the case of adhesives, one possibility to achieve sustainable production is to use non-toxic, low-cost starches as biodegradable raw materials for adhesive production. While native starch contains only hydroxyl groups and has limited scope, chemically modified starch shows superior water resistance properties for adhesive applications. Esterified starches, starches with ester substituents, can be feasibly produced and utilized to prepare bio-based adhesives with improved water resistance. Syntheses of esterified starch materials can involve esterification, transesterification, alkylation, acetylation, succinylation, or enzymatic reactions. The main focus of this review is on the production of esterified starches and their utilization in adhesive applications (for paper, plywood, wood composites, fiberboard, and particleboard). The latter part of this review discusses other processes (etherification, crosslinking, grafting, oxidation, or utilizing biobased coupling agents) to prepare modified starches that can be further applied in adhesive production. Further discussion on the characteristics of modified starch materials and required processing methods for adhesive production is also included.

Abstract:Starch has received much attention as a promising natural material both in biomedical fields and waste water treatment due to its unique biological and adsorptive properties. Recently, the modification of starch is rapidly developed along with its growing applications. This review focuses on the ways of chemical modification of starch including cross-linking, grafting, esterification, etherification, dual modification and so on, and presents the applications of the modified starch in fields like drug delivery, tissue engineering and heavy metal and dye removal.

Abstract:A new biodegradable, renewable, and environmentally friendly starch-based adhesive for wood-based panels was synthesized. The synthesis was conducted by grafting polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAC) monomer onto corn starch and crosslinking polymerization with N-methylol acrylamide (NMA). Compared with the traditional starch-based wood adhesive, the water resistance of starch-based adhesive with NMA (SWA-N) was greatly improved to more than 1 MPa; this exceeds the Chinese standard by 40%. The results from various analyses, including particle size, contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), confocal Raman microscopy (CRM) and 13C-CPMAS, indicated that such improved performance is due to increased crosslinking density and formation of complex network structure. Such complex network structure was found to inhibit excessive expansion of the adhesive during high temperature pressing and water absorption. As a result, the internal structure of the adhesive remained intact when subjected to hot pressing and placed in wet conditions.

Abstract:Herein, we proposed dry heat treatment (DHT) as a pre-treatment method for modifying printed materials, with a particular focus on its application in the control of starch-lipid interactions during hot-extrusion 3D printing (HE-3DP). The results showed that pre-DHT could promote the complexation of wheat starch (WS) and oleic acid (OA)/corn oil (CO) during HE-3DP and thus increase the resistant starch (RS) content. From the structural perspectives, pre-DHT could break starch molecular chains into lower relative molecular weight which enhanced the starch-lipids hydrophobic interactions to form the V-type crystalline structure during HE-3DP. Notably, pre-DHT could also induce the formation of complexed structure which was maintained during HE-3DP. Compared with CO, OA with linear hydrophobic chains was easier to enter the spiral cavity of starch to form more ordered structures, resulting in higher RS content of 27.48 %. Overall, the results could provide basic data for designing nutritional starchy food systems by HE-3DP.

Abstract:Corn starch was modified by treating with coupling agent and blending with acrylate,respectively.The hydrophobic property and the process property of starch treated with coupling agent were studied.The modification conditions and the mechanical properties of blend of linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE)/starch were also studied.The results showed that among the coupling(agents) of silane,titanate and aluminium acid ester,the impression of silane was the best.The hydrophobic property of starch treated with silane coupling(agent) was improved obviously,and the blending torque of low density polyethylene/starch decreased.The suitable conditions for preparing modified starch by using butyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate in an internal mixer were 130 ℃ and(6 min).By adding a few of the modified starch,the(elongation) at break of the LLDPE /starch blend was enhanced significantly,while the tensile strength changed slightly.The modified starch acted as a compatibilizer in the LLDPE/starch blend.

Abstract:Starch is a homopolysaccharide made up of glucose units which are linked together via a glycosidic linkage. This biopolymer is well known for its low cost, biodegradability, renewability and easy availability. In spite of all these beauties, starch has some problems with their solubility in water, retrogradation, loss of viscosity due to rupturing of glucosidic bond when subjected to treatment and absence of some groups of primary importance like different functional groups especially carboxylic group, ester group, ether group and amino group. In order to overcome these shortcomings and enhance its applications, starch must be modified. The modification can be done chemically, physically and enzymatically, but noteworthy one is the chemical modification. In this review article, we focused on the recently used ways of chemical modification such as acid hydrolysis, cross-linking, acetylation/esterification, dual modification, oxidation and grafting of starch, and their properties. This review article highlighted the application of modified starch as an adsorbent for the removal of ammonia, phenol, heavy metals, and dyes.

Abstract:Apart from its non-toxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, starch has demonstrated eminent functional characteristics, e.g., forming well-defined gels/films, stabilizing emulsions/foams, and thickening/texturizing foods, which make it a promising hydrocolloid for various food purposes. Nonetheless, because of the ever-increasing range of its applications, modification of starch via chemical and physical methods for expanding its capabilities is unavoidable. The probable detrimental impacts of chemical modification on human health have encouraged scientists to develop potent physical approaches for starch modification. In this category, in recent years, starch combination with other molecules (i.e., gums, mucilages, salts, polyphenols) has been an interesting platform for developing modified starches with unique attributes where the characteristics of the fabricated starch could be finely tuned via adjusting the reaction parameters, type of molecules reacting with starch and the concentration of the reactants. The modification of starch characteristics upon its complexation with gums, mucilages, salts, and polyphenols as common ingredients in food formulations is comprehensively overviewed in this study. Besides their potent impact on physicochemical, and techno-functional attributes, starch modification via complexation could also remarkably customize the digestibility of starch and provide new products with less digestibility.

Abstract:Starch modifications using chemicals are widely used to improve the desirable properties of native starch. Starch modified with steric acid characterized the starch properties due to the formation of starch-steric acid complex. Structural and functional characteristics of modified starch are influenced by duration, starch-acid concentration ratio, and temperature during the reaction. The diffraction patterns of the starch-stearic acid complexes show a mixture of A-type/B-type and V-type patterns. Starch-stearic acid complexes are regarded as "Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)" and are thermally stable and exhibit high paste viscosity and non-gelling properties. Due to their reduced gelling ability and increased viscosity, they can be utilized as fat replacers. Starch stearate also has promising applications in drug delivery due to its biocompatibility and non-gelling properties, which can be utilized for controlled release systems. Additionally, its biodegradability and enhanced thermal stability make it an ideal candidate for use in environmentally friendly, biodegradable materials. Complexes also have the potential for food packaging applications due to their increased thermal stability and improved barrier properties due to the replacement of the hydroxyl group of starch with a hydrophobic functional group of stearic acid (SA). This review paper examines the reaction parameters involved in the SA modification of starches and explores the starch-SA complexes' impact on physicochemical factors, as well as key structural attributes and industrial applications.
Treatment and mechanism for hot melting starch by reducing the molecular chain winding and crystallinity

Abstract:Unlike thermoplastic petroleum-based materials, starch-based materials rely on aqueous systems but are incapable of hot melting, resulting in low processing efficiency and limited large-scale industrial applications. In this study, the combination of α-amylase liquefaction and urea plasticization was used for the first time to obtain enzymatic thermoplastic starch (ETPS) for hot melting by changing the molecular chain of starch. ETPS showed an apparent hot melting phenomenon when heated below 200 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that heat absorption peaks were obviously reduced, and the hot melting phenomenon occurred easily depending on the combination of enzymatic hydrolysis and plasticization. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that the combined modification effectively increased the number of freely movable chains. The red shift of -OH stretching vibration peaks indicated the formation of strengthened hydrogen bonds in ETPS. X-ray diffraction showed that the crystallinity of ETPS was reduced to 5.68 %, effectively reducing the regenerative phenomenon. Gel permeation chromatography revealed that the molecular weight of ETPS decreased, and the entanglements between molecular chains were reduced. A tensile test showed that the elongation at break of ETPS was as high as 235.29 %, which was much higher than those of enzymatic hydrolysis starch and thermoplastic starch.

Preparation and characterization of thermoplastic starches and their blends with poly(lactic acid)

Abstract:Two different thermoplastic starches (TPS), namely maleic anhydride grafted starch (MA-g-starch) and epoxidized cardanol grafted starch (Epicard-g-starch), were successfully prepared by chemical modification without the addition of any plasticizer. The structure and properties were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), hot press testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle meter, respectively. Results from XRD showed that the highly crystalline structure of native starch was destroyed after modification. Continuous phase was obtained from both of the chemically modified starches after hot pressing at 130°C, indicating that they have good thermoplasticity. Subsequently, they were melt-blended with PLA. It was found that the Epicard-g-starch had a much finer dispersed phase size than MA-g-starch in PLA matrix due to its better hydrophobicity. As a result, the mechanical properties of PLA/Epicard-g-starch blend were superior to those of PLA/MA-g-starch blend.
Effective and eco-friendly safe self-antimildew strategy to simultaneously improve the water resistance and bonding strength of starch-based adhesive

Abstract:Starch adhesive, as a sustainable biomass-based adhesive, could be used to solve environmental problems from petroleum-derived adhesive. But its application is hindered by poor water resistance, mildew resistance, and storage stability. Here, a fully bio-based citric acid-starch adhesive (CASt) with high properties was successfully introduced by a simple method. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) determined that esterification of citric acid (CA) and starch (St) occurred to form a stable three-dimensional crosslinking structure, which strengthened water resistance and bonding strength of the starch adhesive. Compared with native starch (100 %), the soluble content of cured CASt was 1–16 %. CASt adhesive has well storage stability and high mildew resistance. Even after being stored for 5 months, the CASt-1 adhesive (mass ratio of CA/St = 1:1, and reaction time = 1 h) still have good liquidity. And its hot water strength (1.05 ± 0.22 MPa) also satisfied the standard requirements (≥0.7 MPa). The exhibited CASt adhesive is eco-friendly with components from plant resources, which performed as a bright alternative that can substitute petroleum-based adhesives in the artificial board industry.

Abstract:Compositing with starch is an effective way to lower the cost of the poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-based biodegradable materials, while the compatibility of these two phases needs to be enhanced. Here reports an improvement based on vacuum heating treatment(VHT), hence a solid-phase esterification between PLA and crosslinked starch (CST) is enhanced. This research also studied the impact by esterified catalysts and starch proportion on thermal stability, surface morphology and mechanical properties of the composite. The result indicated that VHT shows positive effect on all aspects. Especially, sample with 20% CST shows optimized tensile strength of 62.6 MPa, and elongation at break was as high as 69.8%.

Abstract:Sustainable bio-based adhesive is a promising substitute for petroleum-based adhesives to alleviate serious environmental and health problems. In this work, a nanoengineered starch-based adhesive was fabricated by grafting vinyl acetate (VAc) onto starch molecule and subsequently incorporating the functional nanoparticle [TiO2-coupling-poly(butyl acrylate, BA), TKB] to overcome the drawbacks present in conventional nanocomposite adhesive. Results showed that the presence of BA altered the surface property of TKB, leading to improved dispersion. In the adhesive with 4% (mass ratio to starch) TKB, TKB aggregates played the role as a sliding bridge, which significantly promoted the storage stability and shear strength in both dry and wet states. Additionally, the latex film with 4% TKB exhibited high compatibility and water resistance due to the promoted hydrophobicity. This study provides a fundamental insight into the improvement of functional nanoparticles on the performance of starch-based adhesive, suggesting a novel strategy for designing high-performance bio-adhesive.

Abstract:Starch, a renewable polysaccharide, has attracted growing interest as an alternative industrial feedstock due to its biodegradability, low cost, and readily available hydroxyl (–OH) group, thereby according it the potential of possible modification. Despite its environmental suitability, several factors such as brittleness, sensitivity to enzymes and acids, insolubility in organic solvents etc., have been reported to limit its application as feedstock in some industrial processes. However, techniques of chemical modification aimed towards overcoming these shortcomings have been reported to proceed via substitution, degradation or cross-linking. The degree of substitution (DS) for modified starch is targeted within high (1.5–3), medium (0.2–1.5), and low (0.01–0.2). This is as it relates to their application as thickener or stabilizer in food industry, development of thermoplastic and biodegradable materials. Impact of reaction medium and catalyst type are examined as it affects the degree of substitution. During esterification, the reaction either occurs on the whole starch chains to form conventional starch esters or occurs at the outer surface of the starch molecule, leaving the internal crystalline structure intact. Consequently, the degree of rupturing with subsequent esterification of starch has been reported to be dependent on the agent used, hence classifying the esters formed as organic or inorganic. Therefore, this review examines various findings targeted at starch modification with a direct focus on improving the degree of substitution (DS) via double esterification.
