Abstract:We present a facile two-step strategy to fabricate a novel nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposite photocatalyst. The photocatalyst was synthesized via the combination of dealloying of the as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 (at.%) precursor powders in alkaline media with subsequent surface oxidation in air. The microstructure of the as-prepared photocatalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the as-prepared photocatalyst exhibits an open, bicontinuous interpenetrating ligament (ca. 30 nm)-channel (ca. 15 nm) structure, and is comprised of Cu (core) and Cu2O (shell) phases. Methyl orange (MO) was used as the model pollutant, and photodegradation experiments were monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O photocatalyst shows excellent photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of MO under sunlight. The MO degradation rate can reach as high as 8.04 mg min(-1) g(cat)(-1). In addition, the influence of additive amounts of photocatalyst and initial concentrations of MO on the photodegradation process has been investigated. The photodegradation mechanism of the as-prepared photocatalyst has also been discussed.

Abstract:In this work, Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite, a novel photocatalyst, was synthesized by ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boiling method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Of which, as an upconversion luminescence agent, the Er3+:YAlO3 can transform the visible light in solar energy into ultraviolet light, satisfying the requirement of TiO2–ZnO composite for photocatalytic degradation. The photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite was evaluated through the degradation of Acid Red B dye under solar light irradiation. The effects of preparation conditions such as Er3+:YAlO3 content, heat-treated temperature and heat-treated time on the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite were examined. In addition, the influences of solar light irradiation time, dye initial concentration and Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO amount as well as organic dyes on the photocatalytic degradation were also investigated. The experimental results indicated that the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite can effectively utilize solar energy to degrade Acid Red B dye and its photocatalytic activity was much superior to that of Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite under the same condition.

Abstract:Fe-Mo-O doping g-C3N4 exfoliated composite was fabricated and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, TEM, XPS and N(2 )adsorption-desorption techniques. The as-prepared composite was composed of MoO3, FeMoyOx and exfoliated g-C3N4 crystals, and thus demonstrated high efficiency for degradation of Rhodamine B by advanced oxidation due to the rapid decomposition of H2O2 over the composite catalyst, giving 99 % degradation rate within oxidation time of 15 min. Also, it demonstrated high activity for photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light, achieving > 99 % degradation rate. The high catalytic activity for advanced oxidation and photocatalysis was mainly ascribed to the Fe/Mo dual ion synergy system that could effectively protect Fe (II), or heterojunctions on exfoliated g-C(3)N(4 )that could inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the composite catalyst presented an excellent recovery and reusability for advanced oxidation and photocatalytic degradation.

Abstract:Metal oxides can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the catalytic degradation of organic dyes. However, achieving high catalytic efficiency, structural stability, ease of recovery, and recyclability remains challenging for both research and practical applications. To address these requirements, a bimetallic oxide, CuMnO2, was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal approach and was encapsulated to create hydrogel beads, CS-Ca@PEI/CuMnO2. Subsequently, CS-Ca@PEI/CuMnO2 was used to activate PMS and establish a solid-liquid heterogeneous oxidation system (CS-Ca@PEI/CuMnO2/PMS) for the degradation of Congo red (CR). The effects of various parameters such as different systems, catalyst dosages, initial pH values, PMS concentrations, temperatures, and anion types on the catalytic degradation properties of CS-Ca@PEI/CuMnO2 for CR were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that CS-Ca@PEI/CuMnO2 has exceptional degradation capacity, achieving 91.0% degradation of CR at pH 7. After three degradation cycles, the catalyst maintained an 86.9% degradation efficiency compared to its original performance, highlighting its robust structural stability. The presence of reactive radicals, specifically 1O2 and •O2-, were confirmed through quenching experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) revealed ten proposed intermediates in the catalytic degradation process. Due to its exceptional catalytic performance, structural durability, recyclability, and ease of retrieval, the catalyst shows great potential for effectively removing organic pollutants from industrial wastewater.
Biomimetic anchoring of Fe3O4 onto Ti3C2 MXene for highly efficient removal of organic dyes by Fenton reaction

Abstract:MXene has emerged as one of the most interest two-dimensional layered materials that has been extensively explored for various applications. In this work, a novel biomimetic method has been developed for the first time to fabricate Ti3C2 MXene based magnetic Fe3O4 composites that relied on the self-polymerization of dopamine and subsequent mild temperature pyrolysis. We demonstrated that many organic dyes could be rapidly degraded by the MXene-MNPs composites through Fenton reaction with extremely high efficiency. The degradation efficiency could be greater than 97 % under the optimized experimental conditions. Moreover, the catalysts displayed a good recyclable property after five continuous cycles. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and quenching results indicated that both OH and O 2 − were the reactive species and involved in the degradation process. Owing to the universality and mild reaction conditions of mussel-inspired biomimetic method, many other multifunctional composites with great research interest could also be fabricated. We also believe that this work will provide some new insights for fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for advanced oxidation processes and exploring the critical roles of polydopamine in advanced oxidation procedures.

Abstract:Ce/Mn co-doped Co3O4 catalyst was prepared via a dry soft reactive grinding route.Ce-Mn-Co oxide is more active for methylene blue removal than Mn-Co-O or Co3O4.Ce/Mn dual-doping causes more crystal lattice distortion and structural defects.The degradation mechanism of methylene over Ce-Mn-Co oxide was proposed.Mesoporous Ce-Mn-Co ternary metal oxide was fabricated via an efficient oxalate-precursor-based soft reactive grinding route and used to activate H2O2 for advanced oxidation of methylene blue in water. In addition, Mn-Co binary oxide and pure Co3O4 and Mn3O4 were also synthesized as reference catalysts. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-temperature programmed reduction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that part of the Ce and Mn could be incorporated into the lattice of Co3O4 and caused severe lattice distortion of the unit cell. Compared to the single or binary system, Ce-Mn-Co ternary metal oxide exhibited the best activity in methylene blue removal and nearly 100% decomposition rate and 84% COD removal rate could be achieved in 12 h, and with degradation rate of 93.5% after three rounds. These results were primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of Ce, Mn and Co, which can promote the formation of more lattice defects, higher specific surface area and smaller particle size. Quenching tests showed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) played more dominant role than superoxide radicals (·O2-). Kinetic studies were studied and the activation energies of all the catalysts were calculated.Corresponding author. In situ reduction for synthesis of nano-sized Cu2O particles on MgCuAl-LDH layers for degradation of orange II under visible light

Abstract:Cu2O-MgAl-LDH composites were synthesized from MgCuAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors using ascorbic acid for reduction of Cu2+. The synthesized precursor materials and composites were characterized by XRD, TEM, XRF, XPS and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results showed that the Cu2O nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the LDH nano-sheets, which greatly improved the catalytic property of Cu2O. For example, the Cu2O-Mg7Al5-LDH composite removed about 90% of Orange II while pure Cu2O removed only about 70% of the dye through photocatalytic degradation. The Cu2O-LDH composites showed very high efficiency in degrading Orange II dye because of uniform distribution of Cu2O nanoparticles on the surfaces of LDH with less amount of copper than in pure Cu2O. The Cu2O-LDH composites developed here are potential photocatalysts for dye degradation in water purification.

Abstract:Fenton-like technology is an eco-friendly and efficient method to degrade organic contaminants. Herein, a bimetallic catalyst with high catalytic activity was obtained by anchoring Co and Mn on N-doped carbon materials (MnCo/N-C) through a one-step pyrolysis process. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was activated by cobalt nanoparticles, nitrogen-coordinated metal atoms, and defect sites in MnCo/N-C to produce several reactive species, including SO 4 •– , 1 O 2 , O 2 •– , and •OH. The catalyst showed high activity and excellent stability during the catalytic processes. The degradation of 50 mL of rhodamine B solution with a concentration of 0.03 g/L was almost completed in only five minutes by using 0.1 g/L of the catalyst and 0.2 g/L of PMS. Furthermore, the catalyst could be used over a wide pH range of 3–11. Overall, this work provides a simple approach to preparing a more effective and long-lasting Fenton-like catalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants.

Abstract:In order to achieve the degradation of Congo red dye in wastewater, a new type of three-dimensional porous composite catalyst PW7Mo3Cu2/PANI/MnO2 was prepared by using heteropoly acid [TBA]4H3[PW7Mo3Cu2O38(H2O)2] doped intermediate PANI/MnO2. Using IR, UV, SEM, XPS and other characterization techniques, it was confirmed that the heteropoly acid [TBA]4H3[PW7Mo3Cu2O38(H2O)2] was successfully doped into the intermediate PANI/MnO2 to form a three-dimensional porous structure. The results of N2 adsorption–desorption experiment indicated that the composite catalyst belongs to the type IV (a) mesoporous structure material and has a large pore size and specific surface area. Then, the composite catalyst PW7Mo3Cu2/PANI/MnO2 was used to photocatalyze the degradation of Congo red dye. Under the best photocatalytic conditions, the decolorization rate of Congo red dye reached 93.84%. After recovering and repeating the photocatalysis experiment three times, the decolorization rate of Congo red dye was 73.18%. The experimental results proved that the novel composite catalyst has a strong ability to degrade Congo red dye and reusability, and has potential application value.

Abstract:Ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites consisted of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals and amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles, with large mesochannels and high specific surface areas, have been extensively and detailedly evaluated using various cationic dyes (methylene blue, safranin O, crystal violet, brilliant green, basic fuchsin and rhodamine-6G), anionic dyes (acid fuchsin, orange II, reactive brilliant red X3B and acid red 1) and microcystin-LR. We use mesoporous 80TiO2–20SiO2-900 for the degradation of cationic dyes and MC-LR, due to the dominant adsorption of SiOH groups and synergistic role of coupled adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation. For anionic dyes, due to the adsorption results predominantly from TiOH groups, our strategy realizes the enhanced photocatalytic oxidation by strong surface acids and larger available specific surface area. Based on this, we prepared 90TiO2–10SiO2-700 to degrade them. The results show that our samples exhibit excellent degradation activities to all the contaminants, which are much higher than that of P25 photocatalyst. The dyes are not only decolorized promptly but degraded readily as well. It is strongly indicated that our mesoporous nanocomposites are considerably stable and reusable. These results demonstrate that our mesoporous TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites present extensive and promising application in the fast and highly efficient degradation of various organic pollutants.
Cu Anchored on Manganese Residue Through Mechanical Activation to Prepare a Fe-Cu@SiO2/starch-derived Carbon Composites with Highly Stable and Active Visible Light Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:To harmlessly treat and effectively utilize manganese residue (MR), a novel MR-based catalyst, mechanical activation (MA)-pretreated MR-derived Fe-Cu@SiO2/starch-derived carbon (MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO2/SC) composite, was prepared through a facial method by reduction roasting of MA-pretreated precursors. The prepared catalysts were systematically characterized to explore the formation and catalytic activities. The results showed that the formation of CuFeO2 anchored on the MR could be ascribed to the close contact and mutual diffusion between solid components caused by MA, and the higher specific surface area, strong interaction of Fe-Cu and more accessible reactive sites of MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO2/SC contributed to the greater catalytic activity in photo-Fenton system for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO2/SC catalyst showed excellent degradation efficiency at pH range of 2.5-9.5, and about 100% TC removal in 40 min and 85.6% TOC removal in 120 min could be obtained. The MAMR-Fe-Cu@SiO2/SC exhibited the highest apparent reaction rate constant of 0.066 min(-1), being about 4.0, 2.8, and 2.2 times that for the catalyst of Cu/SC, MAMR-Fe3O4@SiO2/SC and MR-Fe-Cu@SiO2/SC, respectively. This enhancement could be attributed to that anchored Cu could accelerate the charge transfer, and short the reaction pathway between photo and Fenton reaction. XPS results showed that the presence of Fe2+-Fe3+, Mn2+-Mn3+ and Cu+-Cu2+ cycles were responsible for the radical generation on the surface of the catalyst. This environmentally-friendly method for the preparation of composite catalysts may provide new insights for harmless fixed treatment and valorization of MR and large-scale production of catalyst.

In this study, a novel layered-structured CuCo2O4/MXene composite was prepared by self-assembling CuCo2O4 spinel with two-dimensional MXene and used as a heterogeneous catalyst based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the oxidative degradation of p-nitrophenol (4-NP). Benefiting from its unique structure, the degradation efficiency of 4-NP by CuCo2O4/MXene-activated PMS was close to 100 % within 10 min at the initial pH 7.0. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that both radical (SO4 center dot- and center dot OH) and non-radical (O-1(2)) pathways were involved in the degradation of 4-NP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the introduction of MXene could significantly promote the efficient redox cycling of Cu2+/Cu+ and Co3+/Co2+ on the catalyst surface, thus providing a continuous driving force for the PMS activation. More importantly, CuCo2O4/MXene exhibited good ionic interference resistance, high stability and low metal ion leaching rate, suggesting its potential practical application. This work not only demonstrates that CuCo2O4/MXene is a promising catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants by PMS activation, but also provides a new idea for the development of efficient PMS-activated catalysts for pollutant degradation.

Abstract:A composite photocatalyst with carbon-coated CuNi nanoparticles-loaded TiO 2 nanotubes (C@CuNi/TiO 2 ) was synthesized via a microwave hydrothermal alkali stripping method combined with subsequent in-situ carbothermal reduction. The structure, morphology, and surface chemical composition were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The findings demonstrate that the microwave hydrothermal alkali peeling enables the formation of a three-dimensional C@CuNi/TiO 2 composite structure. The results of transient photocurrent response ( i - t ) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under visible light demonstrate that C@CuNi/TiO 2 exhibits a reduced rate of electron-hole recombination and lower surface resistance compared to C@TiO 2 , C@Cu/TiO 2 , and C@Ni/TiO 2 . After a two-hour exposure to visible light, the composite photocatalyst C@CuNi/TiO 2 , featuring a molar ratio of 2 % CuNi nanoparticles to TiO 2 nanotubes, exhibited remarkable degradation activity towards organic dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO)), as well as antibiotics (tetracycline (TC) and levofloxacin (LVFX)). After 5 cycles of photocatalytic reaction, the photodegradation activity of RhB remained above 79 %. It is indicated that CuNi nanoparticles effectively trap and enrich photoelectrons through the photoexcitation of TiO 2 nanotubes. Additionally, the local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effect of CuNi nanoparticles reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated electron/hole and the electron transport resistance in the composite photocatalyst, thereby enhancing its overall photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A highly efficient and selective photocatalyst, UPC‐CMP‐1 has been successfully synthesized by a Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling reaction between iron(III) 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis‐(4′‐bromophenyl) porphine and 1,4‐diethynylbenzene. The scanning electron microscopy shows UPC‐CMP‐1 possesses a dendrite‐like nanostructure. Interestingly, within 120 s, UPC‐CMP‐1 can decompose 88.3% of Congo red (CR) molecules under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, UPC‐CMP‐1 exhibits high selectivity to CR over other dyes. These results reveal that conjugated microporous polymer should be an excellent candidate on the application of dye degradation. image

Abstract:A novel Co–Cu composite heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst was prepared by using a modified hydrothermal method for the degradation of methyl orange solution. The catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), which confirmed that the catalyst contained Co(OH)2, Cu2O, and an exhibition of a hexagonal crystalline structure with sizes within the range of 0.5–5 μm. The influential factors were researched with the use of univariate analysis and the results showed that: the catalyst has better catalytic properties in the pH range of 2–10 and there was an optimum value of the dosage of the catalyst; the greater the dosage of the catalyst, the faster the COD degradation rate achieves its maximum value; the COD degradation rate increases with a higher reaction temperature. When the pH is 7, the dosage of the catalyst is 0.3 g/L, the dosage of hydrogen peroxide is 50 mL/L, and the reaction temperature is 313 K. The COD degradation rate reached 94% after 50 min of treatment, which proved that the catalyst exhibited high catalysis in a Fenton-like process. Furthermore, reuse of the catalyst and the degradation mechanism of methyl orange were also researched.

Abstract:Herein, a series of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, Cu doped MnO2 (CDM), with different Cu/Mn molar ratios were prepared via a hydrothermal reaction. Meanwhile, detailed characterizations were used to study the structures of CDM, and it is amazing that the morphology of CDM changed from nanowires to nanoflowers with an increasing amount of Cu doped. Apart from this, both the specific surface area and oxygen vacancy increased obviously with the increasing Cu/Mn molar ratio. Then, the degradation of different dyes was utilized to evaluate the catalytic activity of different CDM with H2O2 used as the oxidizing agent, and the 50%-CDM with the highest content of Cu doped displayed the best catalytic activity. Herein, the degradation efficiency (D%) of Congo red (CR) solution with low concentration (60 mg/L) reached 100% in 3 min, while the D% of CR solution with a high concentration (300 mg/L) reached 99.4% after 5 min with a higher dosage of H2O2. Additionally, the 50%-CDM also displayed excellent reusability, for which the D% values were still higher than 90% after the 14th cycles. Based on the structure characteristics and mechanism analysis, the excellent catalytic capacity of 50%-CDM was due to the combined influence of large specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancy. Thus, a promising heterogeneous Fenton catalyst was developed in this study, which proved the treatment efficiency of actual dye wastewater.
Enhanced Degradation of Acid Red 73 by Using Cellulose-Based Hydrogel Coated Fe3O4 Nanocomposite As a Fenton-like Catalyst.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using a coprecipitation combining graft copolymerization method, and characterized by various techniques to study their structure-property relationships. The nanocomposite was used as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for Acid Red 73 degradation. The effects of several key parameters, solution pH, H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, and temperature of the reaction medium on the pseudo-first-order kinetics of dye degradation was evaluated. The results showed that the nanocomposite catalyst were highly effective in activating H2O2 to produce reactive radicals for dye degradation, achieving complete decomposition under optimal conditions of 300 min at 25 degrees C and pH 3.5 with 100 mM H(2)O2 and 200 mg.L-1 catalyst. The complexing hydrogel-Fe2+/Fe3+ were the key factors that speed up the redox cycling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ species, thus accelerate the fast degradation rate of target pollutants. Scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that Acid Red 73 was decomposed mainly by the attack of center dot OH radicals.
