Abstract:Fe3O4@C nanocapsules were synthesized via a sacrificial-template method by coating SiO2 nanospheres with an Fe3O4@C double-shell structure, followed by dissolving SiO2 nanospheres through ammonia water under hydrothermal conditions. The nanocapsules show a loading capacity as high as 1300 mg g-1 for doxorubicin (DOX), and the DOX loaded on the surface of the carbon shells displays pH-sensitive release behavior. Drug release experiments were carried out at pH 7.4, 6.2 and 5.0. It was found that the drug release rate at pH 6.2 was about two times as fast as that at pH 7.4, and even faster at pH 5.0. A MTT assay was used to test the cytotoxicity of the DOX, nanocapsules and DOX-nanocapsules, which indicated the low cytotoxicity of the nanocapsules towards cells. The DOX-nanocapsules can be taken up by cancer cells through endocytosis, releasing DOX into the cytoplasm, which was observed by both transmission electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. In vitro magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments validated the potential use of these nanocapsules as MRI contrast agents.

Abstract:The present paper as a review focus on the progress in superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles(SPION) in the drug delivery system by summarize the recently researches.As a result,superparamagnetic nanoparticles are coated with biocompatible materials and can be functionalized with drugs,proteins or plasmids.And SPION has been extensively used in the clinical practices,such as disease diagnosis,drug targeted therapy,gene transfection,medical imaging,heat treatment and radiation.In addition,SPION is also used in cell separation and classification and protein purification and nucleic acid extraction.In conculsion,SPION is a kind of high efficient,economical and safe carrier,which will be widely used in clinical diagnosis and treatments.In this review the key physicochemical properties and applications of SPION in the biomedical sector are introduced and discussed.

Abstract:Mesoporous and magnetic nanomaterials have attracted great attention owing to their unique characteristics and promising applications in drug delivery. In this context, a novel method has been developed to engineer a nanostructure of unique walnut kernel-like SiO2/γ-Fe2O3 nanocomposite by incorporating magnetic γ-Fe2O3 crystallites into mesoporous SiO2 nanospheres to exert their synergistic properties. The as-obtained SiO2/γ-Fe2O3 nanospheres may be applied as a promising drug carrier due to suitable their advantages such as suitable particle size, mesoporous structure, large specific surface area, high biocompatibility, good loading capacity, and long efficiency time of the drug release behavior. In particular, the composite exhibits intense magnetic property, which may lead to the development of nanocomposite with great potential for applications in drug targeting and magnetic hyperthermia therapy.

Abstract:Magnetically functionalized mesoporous silica spheres with different size (average diameter, A.D.) from 150 nm to 2 mu m and pore size distribution were synthesized by generating magnetic FexOy nanoparticles onto the mesoporous silica hosts using the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption results show that these composites conserved regular sphere morphology and ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles. XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites with different gamma-Fe2O3 loading amounts possess super-paramagnetic properties at 300 K, and the saturation magnetization increases with increasing Fe ratio loaded. The ibuprofen-containing spheres were then coated with biodegradable poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) by the S/O/W single-emulsion method. The PLGA hybrid magnetic spheres realize a reduced initial burst with a sustained release stage lasting for 20 days. These composites with or without the PLGA can be used as potential vectors for drug targeting and controlled-release systems.

Abstract:Magnetic nanospheres have numerous applications in biomedicine, biotechnology and wastewater treatment, due to their high surface area, tunable sphere size and superparamagnetic properties. Magnetic nanoparticles can be designed and endowed with optical, electronic and fluorescent properties, allowing a wide range of functionality. Multifunctional magnetic particles with heterodimer structures allow various kinds of target molecules to be attached onto their specific parts via affinity or coordinate bonding, etc. The abilities of these nanodevices, including the encapsulation of target molecules in magnetic hybrid nanostructures and easy magnetic separation in the presence of external magnetic fields, show much promise for magnetic imaging, magnetic separation and drug delivery. Consequently, magnetic particles offer excellent potential future uses in disease diagnosis, hyperthermia, immunoassays, electrochemical biosensors, contaminated water treatment and optical detection. In this article, we review the preparation and application of inorganic and organic magnetic composite spheres in the fields of magnetic separation, drug delivery, hyperthermia, magnetic resonance imaging, and others. The size, specific surface area, structure, magnetic properties and surface functional groups of nanospheres have a great influence on their effectiveness in these applications. The encapsulation of target molecules in magnetic hybrid nanostructures and their easy separation using an external magnetic field show promise for the fabrication of novel nanodevices for many applications. Abstract:The superparamagnetic Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles with core size of 5～10 nm were prepared by polyol process at high temperature.The products have high monodispersibility in aqueous solution.Moreover,the effects of the growth conditions such as modification agents and their amount,temperature,time on the size and monodispersibility of Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles were investigated.It was indicated that choosing the modification agent with strong polar group,increasing the amount of modification agents,elevating reaction temperature and extending reaction time were beneficial to the products with larger particle size,better water-dispersibility and narrower size distribution.The magnetization analysis indicated that all samples showed the superparamagnetic property at room temperature.Moreover,the larger particle size,the higher saturation magnetization.Finally,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) experiment indicated that the as-synthesized products showed the good contrast performance and the Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles modified with PVP were the best one.
Facile solvothermal synthesis of monodisperse superparamagnetic mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres for pH-responsive controlled drug delivery

Abstract:In the present work, monodisperse Fe3O4 nanospheres with typical mesoporous structures and superparamagnetic characteristics were synthesized through a simple solvothermal approach. Various characterization experiments including SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET and SQUID were performed to investigate in detail the morphology, microstructure, composition and physicochemical properties of the prepared Fe3O4 nanospheres. It was found that the average diameter of Fe3O4 nanospheres was determined to be about 207.3 nm with a relatively narrow size distribution. The analysis of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms indicated that Fe3O4 nanospheres represented typical mesoporous structures having a surface area of 20.68 m2/g. The magnetic property measurements demonstrated that the synthesized nanospheres behaved as superparamagnetic with a high saturation magnetization of 97.5 emu/g. Most importantly, the mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres could be utilized as a potential anti-cancer drug carrier for doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). The drug loading capacity and in vitro drug release behavior of DOX in phosphate buffered solutions under different pH values (4.0, 5.5 and 7.4) were examined. The results showed that the developed drug delivery system based on mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres exhibited a high drug loading capacity and a controlled drug release behavior.

Abstract:Monodispersed ferrite nanospheres were synthesized in an ethylene glycol/diethylene glycol (EG/DEG) binary solvent by using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as the surfactant. Particle size control can be attained by careful adjustment of the V(EG)/V(DEG) ratio. Different from previous reports, the magnetic studies of our iron ferrite (Fe(3)O(4)) nanospheres with various sizes from 20 to 300 nm reveal that they exhibit a similar magnetic saturation (M(s)) value. In particular, both the ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4) nanospheres with similar M(s) can be selectively obtained by varying the H(2)O concentration in the reaction system. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characterization indicates that the as-prepared superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4) and ZnFe(2)O(4) nanospheres possess a T(2) relaxivity range that can be used as potential MRI contrast agents.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4 and mesoporous silica core-shell nanospheres with tunable size from 110–800 nm were synthesized via a one step self-assembly method. The morphological, structural, textural, and magnetic properties were well-characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption and magnetometer. These nanocomposites, which possess high surface area, large pore volume and well-defined pore size, exhibit two dimensional hexagonal (P6mm) mesostructures. Interestingly, magnetic core and mesoporous silica shell nanocomposites with large void pore (20 nm) on the shell were generated by increasing the ratio of ethanol/water. Additionally, the obtained nanocomposites combined magnetization response and large void pore, implying the possibility of applications in drug/gene targeting delivery. The cell internalization capacity of NH2-functionalized nanocomposites in the case of cancer cells (HeLa cells) was exemplified to demonstrate their nano-medicine application.

Abstract:In this contribution, we report a facile, gram-scale, low-cost route to prepare monodisperse superparamagnetic single-crystal magnetite NPs with mesoporous structure (MSSMN) via a very simple solvothermal method. The formation mechanism of MSSMN is also discussed and we think that Ostwald ripening probably plays an important role in this synthesis process. It is also interestingly found that the size and morphology of mesoporous Fe3O4 NPs can be easily controlled by changing the amount of NaOH and 1,2-ethylenediamine (ETH). Most importantly, the MSSMN can be used as an effective drug delivery carrier. A typical anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Dox), is used for drug loading, and the release behaviors of Dox in two different pH solutions are studied. The results indicate that the MSSMN has a high drug loading capacity and favorable release property for Dox; thus, it is very promising for the application in drug delivery.

Abstract:Encapsulating well-defined nanoparticles (NPs) into ZIF-8 to form core-shell structures not only can minimize the drawbacks and maximize the advantages of the disparate components but also may provide synergistic functionality. This work presents novel one-pot synthetic methods to produce Fe3O4@ZIF-8 NPs. Moreover, the morphology of Fe3O4@ZIF-8 NPs can be easily controlled by changing the synthesis conditions (time, temperature, and dosage). The as-obtained Fe3O4@ZIF-8 NPs have good dispersibility and a large specific surface area and they are proven to have potential applications as drug delivery models with good biocompatibility, high drug loading and good pH responsiveness.

Abstract:Ferroferric oxide nanoparticle (denoted as Nano-Fe3O4) has low toxicity and is biocompatible, with a small particle size and a relatively high surface area. It has a wide range of applications in many fields such as biology, chemistry, environmental science and medicine. Because of its superparamagnetic properties, easy modification and function, it has become an important material for addressing a number of specific tasks. For example, it includes targeted drug delivery nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging in biomedical applications and in environmental remediation of pollutants. Few articles describe the preparation and modification of Nano-Fe3O4 in detail. We present an evaluation of preparation methodologies, as the quality of material produced plays an important role in its successful application. For example, with modification of Nano-Fe3O4, the surface activation energy is reduced and good dispersion is obtained.

Abstract:As a drug carrier, the properties of magnetic nanoparticles for drug loading are significant. In this letter, three different shapes of magnetic nanoparticles for drug carrier systems were compared. We synthesized Fe3O4 magnetic nanospheres, nanorings and nanotubes, and plyethylene glycol was used as a surface modifier for drug loading. The structure characterization of three different shapes of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was elucidated by electron microscopy, and the composition was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared. The drug loading status and drug release of the three types of nanoparticles with different shapes were tested by Ultraviolet Spectrophometometer. The results show that the hollow Fe3O4 magnetic nanorings and nanotubes have better drug loading capacity and are more suitable for drug carriers, compared with nanospheres.

Abstract:Multifunctional PNIPAM/Fe3O4–ZnS hybrid hollow spheres integrating magnetism, luminescence, and temperature responses into one single entity have been successfully fabricated via a facile method. First, the cross-linked Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hollow spheres were synthesized via a classical method, named one-pot “self-removing” process. Then, Fe3O4 and ZnS nanoparticles were in situ precipitated on the surface of the PNIPAM hollow spheres. The PNIPAM/Fe3O4–ZnS hybrid hollow spheres exhibit magnetic property, which indicates the potential application in drug targeting. In addition, ZnS nanoparticles in the shell play an important role as a luminescent label for tracking the drug delivery. Meanwhile, the existence of PNIPAM provides a thermosensitive property. All these results indicate that the obtained composite can be expected to be used as a smart drug delivery material.

Abstract:Magnetic functionalization of the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 (SiO2) aggregate blocks and rice grain-like particles were realized by using a sol-gel method, resulting in the formation of FexOy@SBA-15 composite materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption/desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results show that these composites conserved ordered mesoporous structure after the formation of FexOy nanoparticles in the pores and on the outer surface of SBA-15. It was confirmed by the XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis that the FexOy generated in these mesoporous silica hosts is mainly composed of gamma-Fe2O3. Magnetic measurements reveal that these composites possess superparamagnetic properties at 300 K. The saturation magnetization of these composites increased with the increasing loading amount of gamma-Fe2O3. These composites, which possess high surface area and high pore volume, show magnetic response sufficient for drug targeting in the presence of an external magnetic field. These magnetic composites show sustained release profiles with ibuprofen as the model drug. The rice grain-like FexOy@SBA-15 particles show higher release rate with respect to the FexOy@SBA-15 aggregate blocks.
