Abstract:Stacked optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This kind of label can carry several nodes’ address information simultaneously in optical packet switching networks, so it can be employed in optical multicasting and simplify the node’s structure a lot. The en/decoder is fabricated with high precision by our FBG techniques, and the experiment results show that the stacked OC label can support optical multicasting very well.

Abstract:Parallel-to-cascading optical code (OC) label processing based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With this technique, the length of the multibit OC label is the same as that of the one-bit OC label; only one encoder and one decoder are needed for the multibit OC label's generation and recognition; the relatively low-speed recognition patterns also reduce the complexity of generating the control signal. The experimental results show that both the ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak (ACP/CCP) and the ratio of ACP to maximum autocorrelation wing are higher than 8 dB in the multibit label's decoded signal, so the parallel-to-cascading OC label processing is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:Multibit optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The multisampling technique is introduced into the label's encoder, then the maximum number of bits that one label can carry is significantly increased. The label's multibit information can be recognized by a single cascaded decoder. The experimental results show that a higher than 10-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak and a higher than 9-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to maximum autocorrelation wing can be realized simultaneously for label's recognition, so the multibit OC label is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:In the traditional scheme of optical packet switching with optical-code (OC) label, the label is represented by one optical code. The capacity of label is limited by the total available number of optical codes in the same set. For expanding the label number to guarantee the network operation, the code length is required to be increased incredibly but the effect is very insignificant. Furthermore, the long codes make it more difficult to manufacture the encoders and decoders. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of multi-optical-code (MOC) label which utilize the two dimensions: time and code to construct the label. The quantity of MOC labels increases exponentially with the number of OCs and the divided time slots. The lack of OC label can be solved by adopting the scheme of MOC label. The details of OPS with MOC label including optical packet generation and switching structure are presented. The platform of OPS with MOC label comprised of three edge nodes and one core switching node is established. The key points in the design of edge and core nodes are demonstrated and the experiment results are shown.

Abstract:An all-optical label recognition method is proposed, which is based on the fiber Bragg grating encoder/decoder and a semiconductor optical amplifier, employing multiple two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes for optical label in optical packet switching system. The program effectively reduces the code autocorrelation/cross-correlation requirements of label identification and removes the cross-correlation pulses after decoding, greatly increases the coding capacity and number of available labels, and improves the reliability of label identification, using the fiber Bragg grating as a decoder and four-wave mixing in the semiconductor optical amplifier. The feasibility of the method is validated by the simulation of OptiSystem software. The simulation also shows that the label has a relatively high extinction ratio and can be operated easily.

Abstract:In this paper, tunable multiple optical orthogonal codes sequences (MOOCS)-based optical labels for optical packet switching (OPS) are experimentally demonstrated. The tunable MOOCS-based optical label scheme is performed by using fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based optical en/decoders group and optical switches controlled by Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), the pulse for MOOCS-based optical label is performed, and multiple single-optical labels are also successfully received. These experimental results show that the scheme for optical label is effective.

Abstract:The experiment of multiple optical orthogonal codes （MOOC） sequences-based optical labels receiving is reported for the first time. In this work, 2 groups of MOOC with code length 19 and code weight 3 are used to identify optical labels. This paper firstly presents the scheme and principle of optical packets switching networks based on MOOC sequences-based optical labels. Since optical labels contain the optical packet switching and routing information, optical label processing is crucial to achieve successfully packets switching. Therefore, the importance of MOOC-based optical labels processing with multiple inconsecutive, random and burst characteristics in optical packets switching network is pointed out. Considering the MOOC-based optical labels, we design a circuit consisting of widened net and multi-level concatenated amplifiers to receive multiple single-optical-label pulse with a period of 2 ns and low power. The experimental results show that the designed scheme is feasible.

Abstract:A novel all-optical label recognition method is proposed and demonstrated experimentally which is based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs)-based encoder/decoder and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). In this scheme, the optical label is firstly decoded properly, the decoded signal then generates the 1st and the 2nd order four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in different SOA, any of the frequencies achieved by the 2nd order FWM is extracted to recognize the optical label. The proposed solution can favor hardware simplicity over bandwidth efficiency in order to achieve the double two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes (2D-OOCs)-based optical label recognition in an optical packet switching (OPS) system where the bandwidth efficiency can be improved by FWM effect in SOA to achieve optical label processing and reasonable spacing of wavelengths for the payloads and optical label. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated by two experiments of the double 2D-OOCs-based optical label generation and recognition, the effect of the optical label on the payloads is also considered. These results show that the proposed method can (1) reduce effectively the code auto-correlation /cross-correlation requirements of the optical label identification and remove the cross-correlation pulses after optical decoding, (2) increase greatly the coding capacity and the number of the available optical labels, (3) improve the reliability and bandwidth efficiency of the optical label identification. The experimental results also show that the optical label has a high extinction ratio and can be operated easily.

Abstract:Multicasting is an important function of wavelength-routing optical communication networks. An all-optical multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. An input signal with data information together with a pump are injected into a highly nonlinear fiber and two idlers with new frequencies can be generated through two degenerate FWM processes, which carry the same data information as the input signal. The single input signal is copied to two channels and the pump can also be modulated by this data. The advantage of this scheme consists in the simple configuration, where only a single pump is needed and no other injected lights are required, the uniform powers and tunable wavelengths of the multicasting signals, and the capacity to further increase multicasting channel number.

Abstract:In an optical packet switching (OPS) system, the label processing is crucial for OPS, since the optical label carries the switching and routing information of optical packets. This paper introduces the scheme and the principle of the Optical Orthogonal Code (OOC)-based optical labels for OPS networks, and points out the importance of optical label processing with inconsecutive, random and bursting characters. Considering these of optical labels, we designed a circuit consisted with widening net and cascading multi-level amplifiers to receive single tiny narrow pulse of optical labels, the experiments results indicate the designed scheme is effective.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new concept of optical packet/burst switching suitable for generalized multiprotocol label switched (GMPLS)-based optical networks. In such networks, optical labeled switched paths are being established in a similar way as label-switched paths in MPLS. We use a wavelength label as well as an orthogonally modulated label, with respect to the payload modulation format, and which is encoded using either frequency-shift keying (FSK) or differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Wavelength is used for switching in the node, whereas the orthogonal label defines the label-switched path. We present both simulation and experimental results to assess transmission performance of the proposed combined modulation scheme. In addition, we propose a suitable optical node architecture that can take advantage of this stacked label concept. Toward this, we use widely tunable wavelength converters to efficiently route IM/FSK (or IM/DPSK) optically labeled packets in an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG)-based node structure. We present performance simulation results in terms of packet loss ratio and internal block probability. Internal blocking is an inherent problem of AWG optical routers, and a specific wavelength assignment algorithm has been developed to minimize it. Finally, the feasibility of IM/FSK transmission is experimentally demonstrated over an 88-km single-mode fiber span, and novel aspects of FSK generation and detection techniques are presented.

Abstract:Optical Code GMPLS (OC-GMPLS) networks have higher resource utilization for its higher switching granularity. A new 2-D optical code is generated by using optical CDMA as a labeling mechanism. A reference architecture performing labeling switching based on optical CDMA is provided and error probability ratio caused by multi-user interference is analyzed in such a system. Found is the theoretical relation between labeling switching network and the cardinality of the new 2-D optical code. The simulation and analysis results show that this new 2-D code can extend label space and increase the number of users, as well as enhance the utilization rate by multi-using wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, the tunable multiple optical orthogonal codes sequences (MOOCS)-based optical label for optical packet switching (OPS) (MOOCS–OPS) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Abstract:This paper proposes an all-optical label processing scheme that uses the multiple optical orthogonal codes sequences (MOOCS)-based optical label for optical packet switching (OPS) (MOOCS–OPS) networks. In this scheme, each MOOCS is a permutation or combination of the multiple optical orthogonal codes (MOOC) selected from the multiple-groups optical orthogonal codes (MGOOC). Following a comparison of different optical label processing (OLP) schemes, the principles of MOOCS–OPS network are given and analyzed. Firstly, theoretical analyses are used to prove that MOOCS is able to greatly enlarge the number of available optical labels when compared to the previous single optical orthogonal code (SOOC) for OPS (SOOC–OPS) network. Then, the key units of the MOOCS-based optical label packets, including optical packet generation, optical label erasing, optical label extraction and optical label rewriting etc., are given and studied. These results are used to verify that the proposed MOOCS–OPS scheme is feasible.

Abstract:To cope with ever-increasing traffic demands in transport networks, all-optical switching is currently perceived as a solution to remove bottlenecks imposed by O/E/O conversions. Optical label switching offers packet switching using the optical-labels. It simplifies the design of switching devices in the optical domain and speeds up packet forwarding significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel design for optical switch, and present a performance analysis to provide deeper insight in its behavior. The analysis results show the effectiveness of the proposed switch technology.
