Abstract:Parallel-to-cascading optical code (OC) label processing based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With this technique, the length of the multibit OC label is the same as that of the one-bit OC label; only one encoder and one decoder are needed for the multibit OC label's generation and recognition; the relatively low-speed recognition patterns also reduce the complexity of generating the control signal. The experimental results show that both the ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak (ACP/CCP) and the ratio of ACP to maximum autocorrelation wing are higher than 8 dB in the multibit label's decoded signal, so the parallel-to-cascading OC label processing is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:Stacked optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This kind of label can carry several nodes’ address information simultaneously in optical packet switching networks, so it can be employed in optical multicasting and simplify the node’s structure a lot. The en/decoder is fabricated with high precision by our FBG techniques, and the experiment results show that the stacked OC label can support optical multicasting very well.

Abstract:Multibit optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The multisampling technique is introduced into the label's encoder, then the maximum number of bits that one label can carry is significantly increased. The label's multibit information can be recognized by a single cascaded decoder. The experimental results show that a higher than 10-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak and a higher than 9-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to maximum autocorrelation wing can be realized simultaneously for label's recognition, so the multibit OC label is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:All-optical label switching (AOLS) is a potential technique which is introduced to fully use the bandwidth capacity in future optical networks and the packet operations are mostly carried out in the optical layer. The key issue in the AOLS approach is the method of coding the optical label onto the packet as it directly determines the structure and the performance of the optical core router as well as the channel bandwidth efficiency and the transmission quality of the packet and its label. With the bit rate increasing above 40Gb/s, new labeling scheme is needed to enhance the spectral efficiency. In this paper, recent advanced labeling schemes for future high speed AOLS network are reviewed, especially the new schemes demonstrated in Tsinghua University, China. Two novel labeling scheme based on vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation are mainly introduced both in principle and experiment. One is compact wavelength labeling scheme which achieves high spectral efficiency since the wasteful double sideband of 40Gb/s has been reduced to vestigial sideband. This scheme can be easily carried out by using optical filters. Another is polarization shift keying scheme with VSB payload which has high spectral efficiency near to 0.8bit/s/Hz. This scheme utilizes two polarization orientations to carry the label signal and causes little distortions between the label and payload. And this scheme is also independent of the payload bit rate which is a good character for future networks. Both the two schemes have little power penalties after long distance SMF transmission and are promising to be used in beyond 40Gb/s optical networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel optical packet switching scheme with one core router and two edge routers, in which an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is generated as a label. In this experiment there are two transmission spans, each span consists of 50-km SMF-28 and an erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier (EDFA) without dispersion management. A 10Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) optical payload and a 2.5Gb/s OFDM optical label are generated, encapsulated, and transmitted in the first span. And then old label is replaced by new label, the generated new optical packet after transmission over the second span is detached and detected. The transmission performance of the optical label and payload is experimentally investigated at the ingress router, core router and egress router.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated some key techniques in label switching optical networks. These techniques include optical label generation, optical label swapping and preamble free clock recovery. The label generation using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique has these advantages of high bit rate operation, low cross-talk and narrow bandwidth occupancy. The label swapping is realized by combining OCSS and wavelength conversion. The payload can be simultaneously regenerated after wavelength conversion; hence this technique is very useful for cascaded label swapping in label switched optical networks. We have also demonstrated how to realize preamble free clock recovery for burst mode label and payload generated by OCSS technique.

Abstract:A novel scheme based on 40Gb/s vestigial sideband modulation for optical payload and label multiplex and separation in all optical label switching (AOLS) networks is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The payload is combined and separated with wavelength labels by optical filters. The experiment results show that after label separation, the power penalties of payload and label are both very little. The influence of the wavelength difference between label and payload is also discussed. The power penalty of payload can be less than 1dB as long as the wavelength difference is larger than 0.1nm. This scheme highly reduces the channel bandwidth of payload and label and is proposing to be used in future optical Internet.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new concept of optical packet/burst switching suitable for generalized multiprotocol label switched (GMPLS)-based optical networks. In such networks, optical labeled switched paths are being established in a similar way as label-switched paths in MPLS. We use a wavelength label as well as an orthogonally modulated label, with respect to the payload modulation format, and which is encoded using either frequency-shift keying (FSK) or differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Wavelength is used for switching in the node, whereas the orthogonal label defines the label-switched path. We present both simulation and experimental results to assess transmission performance of the proposed combined modulation scheme. In addition, we propose a suitable optical node architecture that can take advantage of this stacked label concept. Toward this, we use widely tunable wavelength converters to efficiently route IM/FSK (or IM/DPSK) optically labeled packets in an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG)-based node structure. We present performance simulation results in terms of packet loss ratio and internal block probability. Internal blocking is an inherent problem of AWG optical routers, and a specific wavelength assignment algorithm has been developed to minimize it. Finally, the feasibility of IM/FSK transmission is experimentally demonstrated over an 88-km single-mode fiber span, and novel aspects of FSK generation and detection techniques are presented.

Abstract:In recent years, optical label switching (OLS) gains lots of attentions due to its intrinsic advantages to implement protocol, bit-rate, granularity and data format transparency packet switching. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to realize flexible-rate optical packet switching for OLS networks. At the transmitter node, flexible-rate packet is generated by parallel modulating different combinations of optical carriers generated from the optical multi-carrier generator (OMCG), among which the low-speed optical label occupies one carrier. At the switching node, label is extracted and re-generated in label processing unit (LPU). The payloads are switched based on routing information and new label is added after switching. At the receiver node, another OMCG serves as local oscillators (LOs) for optical payloads coherent detection. The proposed scheme offers good flexibility for dynamic optical packet switching by adjusting the payload bandwidth and could also effectively reduce the number of lasers, modulators and receivers for packet generation/detection. We present proof-of-concept demonstrations of flexible-rate packet generation/detection and label swapping in 12.5 GHz grid. Abstract:A novel optical label-swapping scheme using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique without requiring any conventional wavelength converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an optical label switched (OLS) network over 140-km transmission distance. The transmission performance for both 10-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying payload and 2.5-Gb/s ON-OFF keying label and the effectiveness of the label-swapping scheme has been evaluated for a three-node OLS network.

Abstract:This paper discusses multi-hop operation of an optical-label switching system, demonstrating rapid alloptical packet switching with 2R regeneration for the data and optical label swapping for the label. Introduction Optical-label switching technology has the potential to provide low latency and transparency desired for the next generation Internet [1-2]. For network applications, the router must be cascadable. Moreover, data and label regeneration with label swapping capabilities are desired. Recent demonstrations have been limited to single-hop operations with label swapping [3], multi-hop operations without label or data regeneration [4]. This paper discusses an experimental demonstration of multi-hop (up to 11-hop) operation, in an optical packet routing system with 2R regeneration and optical-label swapping. Experiment Descriptions Using one optical-label switching router (OLSR) setup, the experiment emulates the multi-hop operation of many routers by sending the output packets of one linecard back to the input of the second linecard to form a loop. Fig. 1 shows the setup. The OLSR consists of an optical-subcarrier multiplexing transmitter (SCM TX), two label extractors (LE), two burst mode receivers (BMRX) for label detection, a switch controller that implements the forwarding table and switching control, two tunable wavelength converters (TWC) consisting of tunable lasers (TLD) and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), a uniform-loss cyclic-frequency arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR), and a fixed wavelength converter and label rewriting module (FWC & LR) [5]. The Parallel Bit Error Rate Tester (ParBERT) synchronously generates the electrical label at 155Mb/s and payload at 2.5Gb/s. The SCM TX mixes the label with a 14GHz tone, combines it with the payload, and modulates the optical carrier with the combined signal. Hence, the modulator output is a double-sideband optical signal with the payload as the baseband and the label as the subcarrier. The combination of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and an optical circulator (OC) achieves alloptical label extraction [6]. The BMRX asynchronously recovers the label contents from optical domain to electrical domain. The recovered label signal induces the forwarding decision inside the switch controller according to the routing algorithm. Based on the decision, the switch controller sends a control signal to the TLD to tune to the designated wavelength [7]. The TLD generates the probe light for SOA, which converts the payload information onto the new wavelength by cross-gain modulation (XGM). Payloads with different labels are converted onto different wavelengths corresponding to the desired output ports of the AWGR.

Abstract:Optical Code GMPLS (OC-GMPLS) networks have higher resource utilization for its higher switching granularity. A new 2-D optical code is generated by using optical CDMA as a labeling mechanism. A reference architecture performing labeling switching based on optical CDMA is provided and error probability ratio caused by multi-user interference is analyzed in such a system. Found is the theoretical relation between labeling switching network and the cardinality of the new 2-D optical code. The simulation and analysis results show that this new 2-D code can extend label space and increase the number of users, as well as enhance the utilization rate by multi-using wavelength.
Optical Code Label Stripping based on SOA-MZI in Optical Packet Switching Networks

Abstract:As an alternative to label swapping, an all-optical label stripping scheme based on SOA-MZI is proposed. The stripping process is self-controlled without any synchronization process. Simulation results show that high-quality stripping can be achieved, with no more than 0.09 dB of power fluctuation and 0.05 dB of phase fluctuation in stripped and remaining label. A power contrast ratio of 28 dB between the remaining and residual stripped label, and 30-dB signal-to-noise ratio can be reached, respectively. Parameters tolerance analysis shows that the stripping performance deteriorates little when considering the devices' imperfection in practice. The multihop simulation results also show that our scheme is applicable to large-scale optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:Scalability of packet switched cross-connects that utilize all-optical signal processing is a crucial issue that eventually determines the future role of photonic signal processing in optical networks. After reviewing several labeling techniques, we discuss label stacking and label swapping techniques and their benefits for scalable optical packet switched nodes. All-optical devices for implementing the packet switch based on the labeling techniques will be described. Finally, we present a 1×4 all-optical packet switch based on label swapping technique that utilizes a scalable and asynchronous label processor and label rewriter. Error-free operation indicates a potential utilization of the swapping technique in a multihop packet-switched network.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization shift keying label and a vestigial sideband carrier-suppressed return-to-zero payload scheme for a 43 Gbit/s all-optical label switching network. This scheme has a narrow channel bandwidth and a low penalty due to polarization mode dispersion impairments, which confirm it as a candidate technique for the next generation of optical networks.
