Abstract:Ionic materials are used as gate dielectric layers for field-effect transistors (FETs) to reduce working voltage. In this paper, we exhibit a newly synthesized ionic iridium complex with interesting multifunction of both insulativity and light emission.1 Based on this material, a multifunctional device which behaves as a normal transistor at low gate voltage and a controllable light emitting device when the voltage is higher has been successfully fabricated. The device achieves area emission and the brightness can be tuned by three electrodes (gate, source and drain electrodes). Other ionic iridium complexes are also investigated. Results demonstrate that when mixed with some polymer, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), these complexes can form high performance light-emitting dielectric films as well. Through analysis of energy levels, the working mechanism of the device is proposed. Our study verifies that ionic light-emitting complexes have potential to be used in low-voltage multifunctional electronic devices. Abstract:A new functionalized heteroleptic iridium complex coordinated with 1-phenylisoquinoline（1-piq） and a functionalized β-diketone（G1）,Ir（1-piq）2G1,was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR,mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.The larger conjugation of the replacement of acetylacetone（acac） by a functionalized β-diketonate ligand led to a significant decrease in the HOMO level toward vacuum level,while Ir（1-piq）2G1 and Ir（1-piq）2（acac） showed red phosphorescent emissions of about 620 nm in dichloromethane solution.The phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices were achieved,with the complexes incorporated with polyfluorene（PFO） as a host polymer doped with 30% of 5-（4-biphenylyl）-2-（4-tert-butylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（PBD） as electron transport material.The energy transfer mechanism of the devices was also discussed.The lower EL performance of Ir（1-piq）2G1 is ascribed to the inter-ligand energy transfer,indicating that it is important to control the energy level of the cyclometalated and ancillary ligands.
Synthesis, Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence of One Iridium Complex with 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) Pyrimidine and Tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate Ligands

Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Zwitterionic Iridium Complexes: Synthesis, Luminescent Properties, and Their Application in Cell Imaging.

Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.

Abstract:To obtain dopants owing excellent electron mobility, four novel iridium (III) complexes (Ir(tfmppm)(2)(acac), Ir (tfmppm)(2)(tpip), Ir(f-4-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) and Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tPiP)) with green emission using 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm), 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-4-tfmppm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-3-tfmppm) as main ligands, acetylacetonate (acac) and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (tpip) as ancillary ligands, were investigated, respectively. Due to the variation of the structures among the complexes, the photoluminescence quantum yield (up to 94%) and electron mobility can be regulated gradually, which would broaden the recombination zone, balance the distribution of holes and electrons, leading to excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances. Among four emitters, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) display the best EL performances with a maximum current efficiency of 92.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 29.5%, suggesting these materials have potential application in OLEDs.

Abstract:A series of ionic diiminoiridium complexes [Ir(piq-C boolean AND N)(2)(L-N boolean AND N)](PF6) were prepared, where piq-C boolean AND N is 1-phenylisoquinolinato and L-N boolean AND N are bidentate N-coordinating ligands: 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (mbpym), 5,5'-bis(thiopen-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (tbpyt), and 5,5'-bis(9,9-dioctylfluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (FbpyF). X-ray diffraction studies of [Ir(piq)(2)(mbpym)](PF6) revealed that the iridium center adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. All complexes exhibited intense and long-lived emission at room temperature. The substituents on the 2,2'-bipyridine moieties influence the photophysical and electrochemical properties. The excited states were investigated through theoretical calculations together with photophysical and electrochemical properties. It was found that the excited state of the [Ir(piq)(2)(FbpyF)](PF6) complex can be assigned to a mixed character of (LC)-L-3 (pi(N boolean AND N) -> pi*(N boolean AND N)), (MLCT)-M-3, (LLCT)-L-3 (pi(C boolean AND N)->pi*(N boolean AND N)), and (LC)-L-3 (pi(C boolean AND N)->pi*(C boolean AND N)), In addition, the alkylfluorene-substituted complex, [Ir(piq)(2)(FbpyF)](PF6), had relatively high quantum efficiency and good film-forming ability, and it was expected to be a good candidate for lighting and display applications. Abstract:Ionic iridium(III) complexes are emerging with great promise for organic electronic devices, owing to their unique features such as ease of molecular design and synthesis, excellent photophysical properties, superior redox stability, and highly efficient emissions of virtually all colors. Here, recent progress on new material design, regarding photo- and electroluminescence is highlighted, including several interesting topics such as: i) color-tuning strategies of cationic iridium(III) complexes, ii) widespread utilization in phosphorescent light-emitting devices fabricated by not only solution processes but also vacuum evaporation deposition, and iii) potential applications in data record, storage, and sercurity. Results on anionic iridium(III) complexes and "soft salts" are also discussed, indicating a new related subject. Finally, a brief outlook is suggested, pointing out that ionic iridium(III) complexes should play a more significant role in future organic electronic materials technology.

Abstract:Phosphorescent transition-metal complexes have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to their ability of harvesting both singlet and triplet exciton in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), theoretically enabling internal quantum efficiency to be 100%, while the up-limitation for fluorescent OLEDs is 25%. Among these materials, iridium complexes are the most promising emitters for OLEDs since they usually have good features of strong luminescence, tunable emission color, good thermal and electrochemical stability, as well as being able to form neutral compounds for vacuum deposition. This article reviews the progress in molecular iridium complexes, focusing on the aspects of material design and synthesis, mechanisms for emission, as well as innovation of materials and their performance in OLED devices. Particularly, after describing the typical device structure for phosphorescent emitter, the dominate emission mechanisms for iridium complexes are discussed in two classes, i. e., main ligand-based metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission for both homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes, auxiliary ligand intermediated MLCT emission for heteroleptic complexes. For material synthesis, according to the nature of reaction, four commonly used synthetic-routes are summarized. Meanwhile, the facial- and meridional- isomers are discussed. In the material development for OLEDs, categorized into different emission color, materials and their corresponding device performance are summarized and discussed. In addition, the host materials for the above emitters are briefly introduced. Finally, further development for phosphorescent materials is proposed.

Abstract:The development of a class of simple‐structure‐based small molecule iridium complexes with adjustable color emission from blue to near‐infrared (NIR) remains a major challenge. A novel straightforward strategy toward a series of three types of charged ligand (0, −1, −2)‐based neutral iridium(III) complexes is described, as it can be easily obtained by efficient three‐step synthesis. All the complexes contain an unusual dianionic ligand (−2) biphenyl and show a great color variation from blue–green (465–503 nm) to NIR (688–706 nm) by controlling different neutral (0) and monoanionic (−1) ligands. Notably, all the NIR‐emitting iridium(III) complexes have excellent chemical and thermal stability, which makes them easy to sublimate and purify, and are eventually applied to organic light‐emitting diode device with a good external quantum efficiency of 2.5%, and low efficiency roll‐off and turn‐on voltage (3 V). This study opens an important avenue for the construction of novel phosphorescent iridium(III) complex materials with tunable properties featuring three types of charged ligands (0, −1, −2), thus providing new opportunities for their optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have aroused great interest in recent years as novel organic light-emitting devices and a promising lighting solution. LECs have many advantages over multilayered organic lighting-emitting diodes (OLEDs), such as single layer, solution process and air-stable cathodes. In recent years, ionic iridium complexes are widely used in LECs for their high efficiencies and tunable emission colours. In this feature article, we will review the proposed operation mechanisms of LECs, the development of ionic iridium complexes and the progress in improving colour, efficiency, stability and response time of the LECs. Finally, the prospects and remaining problems will be discussed.

Abstract:Two near-infrared (NIR)-emitting iridium(III) complexes of (Me-BIPz)(2)Ir(acac) and (tBu-BIPz)(2)Ir(acac), (i.e. Ir-1 and Ir-2 ) are designed and synthesized, which contain methyl and t-butyl substituted 14-phenyl-14H-benzo[a]indolo[3,2-c]phenazine (BIPz), respectively with a rigid D-A-type coordinated core. The influence of the rigid D-A skeleton and the attached groups on photoelectronic properties of iridium complexes is primarily investigated. An advanced external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.65% with a radiant emittance of 13057 mW Sr-1 m -2 at 746 nm is obtained in the Ir-2-doped polymer light-emitting devices. This EQE value is 1.5 times higher than that in the Ir-1-doped devices. Furthermore, this type of iridium complexes exhibits better NIR-emitting properties than most of the reported iridium complexes containing the C<^>N ligand with two coordinated aryl rings. The results indicate that the rigid coordinated core of C<^>N ligand is an effective strategy to construct high-efficiency NIR-emitting iridium complexes. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A bis-cyclometalated iridium complex (ffbi)(2)Ir(acac) (ffbi=1-(4-fluorobenzyl)-2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzimidazole, acac=acetylacetone) containing benzimidazole-based ligand has been synthesized and used as an emitter in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The results showed that this complex had a strong phosphorescent character and the EL devices based on this complex emitted green light. For the device with the structure of TCTA(40 nm)/CBP:Ir(6.3%, 30 nm)/BCP(10 nm)/Alq(40 nm), the maximum brightness reached 41499 cd center dot m(-2) at a voltage of 12 V and the maximum external efficiency reached 5.7% at a voltage of 8 V.
Rare Earth Complex as Electron Trapper and Energy Transfer Ladder for Efficient Red Iridium Complex Based Electroluminescent Devices

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally demonstrated the new functions of trivalent rare earth complex in improving the electroluminescent (EL) performances of iridium complex by codoping trace Eu(TTA)3phen (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) into a light-emitting layer based on PQ2Ir(dpm) (iridium(III)bis(2-phenylquinoly-N,C(2'))dipivaloylmethane). Compared with a reference device, the codoped devices displayed higher efficiencies, slower efficiency roll-off, higher brightness, and even better color purity. Experimental results demonstrated that Eu(TTA)3phen molecules function as electron trappers due to its low-lying energy levels, which are helpful in balancing holes and electrons and in broadening recombination zone. In addition, the matched triplet energy of Eu(TTA)3phen is instrumental in facilitating energy transfer from host to emitter. Finally, highly efficient red EL devices with the highest current efficiency, power efficiency and brightness up to 58.98 cd A(-1) (external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 21%), 61.73 lm W(-1) and 100870 cd m(-2), respectively, were obtained by appropriately decreasing the doping concentration of iridium complex. At certain brightness of 1000 cd m(-2), EL current efficiency up to 51.94 cd A(-1) (EQE = 18.5%) was retained. Our investigation extends the application of rare earth complexes in EL devices and provides a chance to improve the device performances.
Synthesis of Fluorinated Diphenylbenzimidazole Iridium Complexes Based on Different Auxiliary Ligands and Solution-Processed Electroluminescent Devices

Abstract:Nine benzimidazole-iridium(II) complexes Ir-1a-Ir-3c were designed and synthesized by using fluorinated diphenylbenzimidazole derivatives as the main ligands and acetylacetone (corresponding complexes: Ir-1a-Ir-3a), 2-pyridine carboxylic acid (corresponding complexes: Ir-1b-Ir-3b), and 2-(5-trifluoromethyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazol-3-yl)-pyridine (tftp, corresponding complexes: Ir-1c-Ir-3c) as the auxiliary ligands, respectively. The effects of the degree of fluorination and different auxiliary ligands on the photophysical properties of the corresponding iridium complexes were investigated. The maximum emission wavelengths of the nine complexes were located in a range of 487-502 nm, showing green to blue-green phosphorescent emission. The largest blue shift was observed for the complexes based on tftp as an auxiliary ligand, especially for Ir-1c compared to Ir-1a with a blue shift of 17 nm. The nine complexes showed excellent photoluminescence efficiencies of 52%-87%. Furthermore, all iridium(III) complexes exhibited good thermal stability, and the thermal decomposition temperatures were 313-390 t (5% weight loss). Four iridium complexes of Ir-1c, Ir-2c, Ir-3c, and Ir-2b were selected for spin-coated electroluminescent devices with a doping concentration of 9%. The results show that the change of the primary and secondary ligands has a large effect on the luminescent color and luminescent efficiency of the light-emitting diodes.
