Abstract:We demonstrate lasing in a cavity formed by two Mie scatterers in a dye colloidal solution. Like a Fabry-Perot cavity, the feedback mechanism for lasing is based on back scattering from each particle. Strong light amplification in between the scatterer pair not only compensate its large diffraction loss, but also help to choose the particular pair out of many scatterers in the suspension to form the laser cavity. Such cavity selection is facilitated by a careful designed cone shaped excitation geometry. Detailed experimental studies on the threshold behavior, spectral characteristic of lasing emission, and output directionality are presented. A simple theoretical model provides qualitative explanation for this lasing phenomenon.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. The measured lasing threshold of the microlaser is as low as 100 mu J/cm(2). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate directional output from a deformed disk laser of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. Unlike larger deformed cavity lasers, which exhibit universal output directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics, the far-field patterns differ between lasing modes. The directional emission results from weak coupling of isotropic high-quality modes to anisotropic low-quality modes, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. This mechanism makes it possible to control the output properties of wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:We present detailed experimental and numerical studies of random lasing in weakly scattering systems. The interference of scattered light, which is weak in the passive systems, is greatly enhanced in the presence of high gain, providing coherent and resonant feedback for lasing. The lasing modes are confined in the vicinity of the pumped volume due to absorption of emitted light outside it. In the ballistic regime where the size of the gain volume is less than the scattering mean free path, lasing oscillation occurs along the direction in which the gain volume is most extended, producing directional laser output. The feedback for lasing originates mainly from backscattering of particles near the boundaries of the pumped region. It results in nearly constant frequency spacing of lasing modes, which scales inversely with the maximum dimension of the gain volume.
All-Dielectric Nanolaser with Subnanometer Field Confinement

Abstract: The ability to generate a laser field with ultratight spatial confinement is important for pushing the limit of optical science and technology. Although plasmon lasers can offer sub-diffraction-confined laser fields, it is restricted by a trade-off between optical confinement and loss of free-electron oscillation in metals. We show here an all-dielectric nanolaser that can circumvent the confinement-loss trade-off, and offer a field confinement down to subnanometer level. The ultra-confined lasing field, supported by low-loss oscillation of polarized bound electrons surrounding a 1-nm-width slit in a coupled CdS nanowire pair, is manifested as the dominant peak of a TE0-like lasing mode around 520-nm wavelength, with a field confinement down to 0.23 nm and a peak-to-background ratio of ~32.7 dB. This laser may pave a way towards new regions for nanolasers and light-matter interaction.

Abstract:A single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with ultratight optical confinement in all three dimensions is a long-cherished but yet to be realized goal. Here we propose an experimentally realizable plasmon laser using a single nanorod. We show that, by harnessing a Au-nanorod cavity with a large gain from a Purcell-enhanced stimulated emission rate and greatly suppressed high-order mode dissipation, it is possible to implement a dipole-mode plasmon laser with accessible material parameters. Our approach may lead to a real single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with three-dimensional ultraconfinement and offers an opportunity to explore and utilize the enhanced light-matter interaction at a lower dimension.

Abstract:The gain and loss in a microcavity laser play an important role for the modulation of laser spectrum. We show that dual-wavelength single mode lasing can be achieved in an asymmetric coupled system consisted of two size-mismatched microdisks. The amount of eigenmodes in this coupled-microdisk system is reduced relying on the Vernier effect. Then a single mode is selected to lase by controlling the gain branching in the supermodes. The supermodes are formed by the coupling between different transverse whispering-gallery modes (WGMs). When the gain/loss status between the two mirodisks is changed through selectively pumping process, the modulated gain branching for various supermodes leads to the switchable single-frequency laser emission. The results obtained in this work will provide the further understand for the spectral modulation mechanism in the coupled microcavity laser system.

Abstract:Near-field coupling between nanolasers enables collective high-power lasing but leads to complex spectral reshaping and multimode operation, limiting the emission brightness, spatial coherence and temporal stability. Many lasing architectures have been proposed to circumvent this limitation, based on symmetries, topology, or interference. We show that a much simpler and robust method exploiting phase-delayed coupling, where light exchanged by the lasers carries a phase, can enable stable single-mode operation. Phase-delayed coupling changes the modal amplification: for pump powers close to the anyonic parity-time (PT) symmetric exceptional point, a high phase delay completely separates the mode thresholds, leading to single mode operation. This is shown by stability analysis with nonlinear coupled mode theory and stochastic differential equations for two coupled nanolasers and confirmed by realistic semi-analytical treatment of a dimer of lasing nanospheres. Finally, we extend the mode control to large arrays of nanolasers, featuring lowered thresholds and higher power. Our work promises a novel solution to engineer bright and stable single-mode lasing from nanolaser arrays with important applications in photonic chips for communication and lidars.

Abstract:<p>The manipulation of optical fields plays an essential role in various areas including physics, chemistry, surface science, materials science, and nanophotonics. Herein, for the first time, we have demonstrated that a single core–shell nanoparticle features the broadband zero-backward scattering, which spans as broadly as 140 nm in the visible range. This result is acquired by tuning both the electric-dipole mode of the core and the magnetic-dipole mode of the shell, such that an effective modes coupling is achieved. By choosing special modes (or via the specific excitation laser lines), "hot spots" can be controllably transferred among the Au core surface, the shell surface, or both. This work may provide guidance for designing structures with broadband directional scattering characteristics and controllable spatial transfer of "hot spots".</p>

Abstract:Highly collimated laser emission from a largely deformed microcavity laser (peanut-shaped microcavity laser) was observed. Emission divergence of 2° was achieved. The microcavity laser was found to be operated on a hybrid lasing mode that formed with a combination of whispering gallery orbit and multiple-bouncing orbit.

Abstract:We experimentally report an asymmetrical spherical microcavity with thermal-induced deformation, in which five-bounce whispering-gallery modes possess not only ultrahigh quality factors (Q) but also remarkably directional escape emission from the microsphere boundary. With efficient free-space excitation and collection, a low-threshold microlaser is demonstrated and exhibits a highly directional emission. Our measurement agrees well with the theoretical predictions by corrected Fresnel law.

Abstract:Single-mode lasing from a coupled asymmetric microcavity is achieved. By coupling two size mismatched circular microrings to form a coupled asymmetric microcavity, multi-whispering-gallery modes are successfully suppressed and single-frequency laser emission is robustly obtained. Moreover, the laser emits in four directions, and each beam has a divergence of only 6.6 degrees . It is demonstrated further that this single-frequency coupled microcavity laser can be easily integrated with planar lightwave circuits. We provide an easily accessible approach to achieve a single-frequency laser from microcavity lasers operating on whispering-gallery modes.

Abstract:We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of non-conventional lasing from higher multi-exciton states of a few quantum dot-photonic crystal nanocavity. We show that the photon output is fed from saturable quantum emitters rather than a non-saturable background despite being rather insensitive to the spectral position of the mode. Although the exciton transitions of each quantum dot are detuned by up to $160$ cavity linewidths, we observe that strong excitation populates a multitude of closely spaced multi-exciton states, which partly overlap spectrally with the mode. The limited number of emitters is confirmed by a complete saturation of the mode intensity at strong pumping, providing sufficient gain to reach stimulated emission, whilst being accompanied by a distinct lasing threshold. Detailed second-order photon-correlation measurements unambiguously identify the transition to lasing for strong pumping and, most remarkably, reveal super-thermal photon bunching with $g^{(2)}(0)>2$ below lasing threshold. Based on our microscopic theory, a pump-rate dependent $\beta$-factor $\beta(P)$ is needed to describe the nanolaser and account for the interplay of multi-exciton transitions in the few-emitter gain medium. Moreover, we theoretically predict that the super-thermal bunching is related to dipole-anticorrelated multi-exciton recombination channels via sub- and super-radiant coupling below and above lasing threshold, respectively. Our results provide new insights into the microscopic light-matter-coupling of spatially separated emitters coupled to a common cavity mode and, thus, provides a complete understanding of stimulated emission in nanolasers with discrete emitters.

Abstract:Lasers are ubiquitous for information storage, processing, communications, sensing, biological research and medical applications. To decrease their energy and materials usage, a key quest is to miniaturise lasers down to nanocavities. Obtaining the smallest mode volumes demands plasmonic nanocavities, but for these, gain comes from only a single or few emitters. Until now, lasing in such devices was unobtainable due to low gain and high cavity losses. Here, we demonstrate a form of 'few emitter lasing' in a plasmonic nanocavity approaching the single-molecule emitter regime. The few-emitter lasing transition significantly broadens, and depends on the number of molecules and their individual locations. We show this non-standard few-emitter lasing can be understood by developing a theoretical approach extending previous weak-coupling theories. Our work paves the way for developing nanolaser applications as well as fundamental studies at the limit of few emitters.

Laser Emission With Hybrid Resonant Mode From An Active Peanut-Shaped Microcavity

Abstract:Two basic types of resonances exist in microcavities. One is whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonance which Occurs particularly in circular and elliptical-shaped micro-disks. The other type of resonance is mutiple-bouncing periodic orbit. Bow-tie bouncing modes found in a quadruple-shaped cavity and some types of scar modes in chaotic systems are typical examples. Emission directionality from a microcavity is an important property because achieving highly collimated emission (comparable to that of,I bulk laser system) from microcavity lasers is essential to obtain high brightness micro-light Sources for coupling with other optical systems. Asymmetric resonant cavities (ARCS) have been designed and fabricated to achieve laser emissions with directionality, however, the beam divergences of all those reported ARCS were found to be of ten degrees at least.In this work, we report an observation of directional laser emission with extremely narrow divergence (about 2 degrees) from a peanut-shaped microcavity. This narrow divergence is very promising for the microcavity to be used as micro-lasers with high brightness. We also demonstrated that the real resonance in a peanut-shaped microcavity is a very special hybrid resonance which combines a whispering gallery orbit and a two-bouncing orbit.The peanut-shaped microcavity was fabricated by coating dye doped organic/inorganic hybrid glass materials on a pair of fibers. A gain layer with 1.12 wt% laser dye (Rhodamine B, RhB) in the organic/inorganic hybrid matrix material (n = 1.52) was dip-coated on the stacked fiber to form a peanut-shaped boundary. The inset in Fig. 1 shows schematically a peanut-shaped microcavity. It is obvious that a peanut-shaped microcavity is a largely deformed cavity comparing with those in references, especially it has a concave Curvature, which is avoided in conventional microcavity design for resonances on WGMs. Fig. I plotted the integrated far-field laser emission intensity versus emission angle. Lasing from the cavity has four major strong emission peaks. The divergence of these strong peaks is 2 degrees. The very narrow divergence is striking when compared with the typical divergence in the other microcavities of over 10 degrees. Combining information oil mode spacing, far-field emission pattern and the lasing threshold. the most possible resonant orbit was found to be ail asymmetric hybrid resonance which consists half whispering gallery orbit and half two-bouncing orbit, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The divergent beam leaving left part of cavity is collimated by the curvature of the right cavity boundary that works like a ball lens. Therefore, an extreme narrow emission divergence is achieved. Comparing with other orbits Such as diamond-like orbits, the hybrid mode may not have the largest Q when a passive cavity is considered. as long as the two bouncing points are highly lossy. However, since a peanut-shaped cavity only has a very thin gain layer, for the hybrid mode, comparing to multiple-bouncing periodic loops. total gain is much larger because the WGM path overlaps with the gain area, therefore the hybrid mode becomes the most possible lasing mode.

Abstract:This talk will present a tutorial discuss of several important aspects of recent progress on semiconductor nanolasers. After some general introduction, the talk will be divided into the discussions of two types of nanolasers: 1) nanolasers based on plasmonic structures or metallic cavities and 2) nanocavities integrated with two-dimensional (2D) monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMCs). In the first part, we discuss the nanolasers with a metallic or plasmonic cavities. The inclusion of metallic structures or cavities allows reduction of laser sizes significantly below the those of typical pure semiconductor cavities. Such lasers might be potentially important for applications where laser size is the primary concerns, such as in future integrated photonic systems or optical interconnects on the chip. After the review of past progress, we will present some of our recent work on nano-membrane lasers and on plasmonic nano-disk lasers. The second part will deal with the most recent progress in integrating the thinnest gain medium, the 2D monolayer TMCs, with nanolaser cavities. The most exciting aspect of this type of new materials is their strong exciton bonds with binding energy exceeding 0.5 eV, allowing robust excitonic light emission well above room temperature. Integration of such monolayer with a silicon nanobeam cavity has resulted in our recent demonstration of room temperature lasing based on a single layer of TMCs, because of strong excitonic emission and high optical gain. Such silicon compatible lasers might provide an important alternative for high energy-efficiency applications in silicon integrated photonics.
Dual-Wavelength Lasing in Quantum-Dot Plasmonic Lattice Lasers

Abstract:Arrays of metallic particles patterned on a substrate have emerged as a promising design for on-chip plasmonic lasers. In past examples of such devices, the periodic particles provided feedback at a single resonance wavelength, and organic dye molecules were used as the gain material. Here, we introduce a flexible template-based fabrication method that allows a broader design space for Ag particle-array lasers. Instead of dye molecules, we integrate colloidal quantum dots (QDs), which offer better photostability and wavelength tunability. Our fabrication approach also allows us to easily adjust the refractive index of the substrate and the QD-film thickness. Exploiting these capabilities, we demonstrate not only single-wavelength lasing but dual-wavelength lasing via two distinct strategies. First, by using particle arrays with rectangular lattice symmetries, we obtain feedback from two orthogonal directions. The two output wavelengths from this laser can be selected individually using a linear polarizer. Second, by adjusting the QD-film thickness, we use higher-order transverse waveguide modes in the QD film to obtain dual-wavelength lasing at normal and off-normal angles from a symmetric square array. We thus show that our approach offers various design possibilities to tune the laser output.

Abstract:Lasing was achieved in a new type of random laser: the planar random microcavity laser. The laser consists of a planar microcavity with a random gain layer. Optical confinement by the two-dimensional random cavity and the one-dimensional planar microcavity drastically reduces the number of resonant modes. As a result, the laser output is highly directional (the divergence angle is 1.68 degrees) with an extremely narrow-linewidth and ultralow threshold. All these phenomena are explained in terms of the coupling of random cavity modes and planar microcavity modes. The results demonstrate an important step towards applications of random lasers.
