Abstract:A porous carbon spheres@MnO2 composite is prepared and used as the electrosorption electrode. The MnO2 nanoparticles are evenly distributed on the porous carbon spheres. The as-prepared composite possesses high specific surface area of 258.6m(2)center dot g(-1). Its electrochemical evaluations confirm that the composite has high specific capacitance of 175F center dot g(-1) at a current density of 1 A center dot g(-1) in 0.5mol center dot L-1 NaCl aqueous solution, and shows good conductivity and excellent cycling performance. Electrosorption capacity for the porous carbon spheres@MnO2 composite is 6.28mg center dot g(-1). Moreover, the composite electrode exhibits excellent recyclability with an efficient regeneration process.

Abstract:The shortage of freshwater supplies has restricted societal development. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology for desalination of seawater or brackish water, the performance of which is highly dependent on electrode materials. In this work, a molybdenum disulfide/carbon nanotube composite (CNTs-b-MoS2) with high capacitance was successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The composite exhibited a specific capacitance of 112.79 F g-1. To reduce costs and determine the practicality of using CNTs-b-MoS2 for CDI, we combined activated carbon (AC) with CNTs-b-MoS2 as a CDI electrode. The research demonstrated that after doping with 5% (mass ratio) CNTs-b-MoS2, the specific capacitance and electrosorption capacity of AC were significantly improved and the maximum desalination capacity of CNTs-b-MoS2/AC reached 8.19 mg g-1. The low dosage of CNTs-b-MoS2 combined with the high specific surface area of AC avoided the shortcomings of CNTs-b-MoS2, namely low specific surface area and high cost. Moreover, the outstanding con-ductivity of CNTs-b-MoS2 improved the conductivity and enhanced the adsorption capacity of AC, giving CNTs-b-MoS2/AC potential as an advanced, low-cost CDI electrode material.

Abstract:MXene has drawn widespread attention as a potential material for electrode use in capacitive deionization (CDI). However, the applications of MXene are limited by its property of low electrical capacity. Herein, a MnO2/MXene composite was firstly evaluated in a capacitive deionization system, in which the MnO2 acts as intercalation-type pseudocapacitive electrodes to enhance the electrical capacity, and MXene provides an electron conduction highway network that improves the charge transfer of the MnO2. The result showed that the low-crystallinity MnO2 with irregular particles was well-distributed on the surface of the MXene. The desalination capacity of 30.5 mg·g−1 is achieved at a voltage window of 1.2 V, which was higher than that of the reported pure MXene and MnO2. The electrical double-layer (EDL) capacitive and the diffusion-controlled processes are the main charge storage mechanisms, and the EDL contribution provides 50.3% to the total capacitance. This result suggests a promising direction for further applying a MnO2/MXene composite in CDI.

Novel MoS2/NOMC Electrodes with Enhanced Capacitive Deionization Performances

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising technology for seawater and brackish water desalination but still suffers from several drawbacks, such as low electrosorption capacity and less efficient desalination performance. In this study, MoS2/NOMC (nitrogen-doped highly ordered mesoporous carbon) composite with enhanced hydrophilicity, conductivity and capacitance was successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal process. The MoS2/NOMC electrodes showed efficient desalination performances with an electrosorption capacity of 28.82 mg/g at 1.6 V in 250 mg/L NaCl solution and a maximum electrosorption capacity of 30.49 mg/g based on Langmuir fitting. The mechanism of the enhanced desalination performance of MoS2/NOMC electrodes was explored through the characterization of the contributions of the capacitor-controlled (electrical double layer capacitor without charge transfer) and diffusion-controlled processes (charge transfer with N-doping of NOMC as well as the various oxidation states (from + 2 to + 6) of molybdenum atoms (Mo) in MoS2). Capacitor-controlled process played a major role (with the contribution of 73.17%) for the improved desalination performances of MoS2/NOMC electrodes compared to the diffusion-controlled process (with the contribution of 26.83%). In addition, MoS2/NOMC electrodes showed an excellent regeneration performance, indicating the potential of MoS2/NOMC composite as a promising CDI electrode material.
Employing Manganese Dioxide and Bamboo Carbon for Capacitive Water Desalination and Disinfection

Abstract:A manganese dioxide (MnO2)/bamboo carbon (BC) composite was prepared using hydrothermal and impregnation methods and used for the capacitive desalination (CDI) and disinfection of water. The results showed that these composites had fast Na+ ion exchange and charge transfer properties. During the CDI process, these composites' electrodes exhibited good cycle stability and electrosorption capacity (4.09 mg/g) and an excellent bactericidal effect. These carbon-based composite electrodes' bactericidal rate for Escherichia coli could reach 99.99% within 180 min; therefore, they had good performance and are a good choice for high-performance deionization applications.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) holds great promise as an electrode material for capacitive deionization (CDI); but its low electrical conductivity considerably restricts its desalination capacity. Nevertheless, its electrochemical performance can be enhanced by augmenting its conductivity. Hence, we propose a novel strategy for constructing a strongly coupled ε-MnO 2 /MXene composite, in which, MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) serves as a network of electron conduction highways that enhance the charge transfer of ε-MnO 2 and activates the underutilized electrochemically active sites of ε-MnO 2 . Based on these advantages, an ε-MnO 2 /MXene composite is prepared for the first time, comprising spherical ε-MnO 2 nanoparticles grown on MXene layers. As demonstrated, ε-MnO 2 /MXene composite demonstrates exceptional desalination performance, exhibiting a maximum deionization rate of 17.54 mg g −1 min −1 and an ultrahigh desalination capacity of 114.66 mg g −1 in 1000 mg/L NaCl solution at 1.2 V, which is considerably higher than those observed for ε-MnO 2 (74.93 mg g −1 ), MXene (29.26 mg g −1 ) and recently reported electrode materials. Such an outstanding CDI performance can be ascribed to a considerably high specific capacitance ε-MnO 2 /MXene composite of approximately 337.2F g −1 at a specific current of 1 A/g, which is approximately 2.16 times that of an ε-MnO 2 electrode. The excellent performance of ε-MnO 2 /MXene composite makes it a potential practical application of CDI.

Abstract:While MnO2 has been identified as a potent agent in the desalination process, its efficacy is significantly impeded by its inherent poor electrical conductivity and substantial ion diffusion barriers. By orchestrating an interfacial electron bridge within the MnO2/g-C3N4 heterostructure, reinforced through Np z -Mnd z 2 orbital hybridization, we have managed to significantly boost both SAC and SAR in the HCDI process. The reinforced Np z -Mnd z 2 orbital hybridization triggers a substantial electron transition from g-C3N4 to MnO2, culminating in a high Mn d z 2 electron occupancy. Further analysis reveals the formation of a MnN chemical bond at the MnO2/g-C3N4 interface, operating as an essential electron transfer bridge from g-C3N4 to MnO2. This process concurrently initiates a rise in the Mn d z 2 orbital energy level, equipping the Mn d z 2 electron with superior redox activity. With these enhancements, the manufactured MnO2/g-C3N4 exhibits exemplary performance, boasting an improved SAC of 68 mg g−1 and SAR of 3.6 mg g−1 min−1 with a decreased energy consumption of 0.7224 kWh kg−1 at 1.2 V. This innovative work offers an unconventional roadmap for activating electron redox activity and thereby accelerating charge transfer in transition metal oxides.

Abstract:Electrode materials are a crucial component for achieving high desalination performance via capacitive deionization (CDI). In the present work, we have successfully fabricated a manganese dioxide (MnO2)/activated carbon (AC) composite electrode using an anodic electrodeposition technique. Surface characterization confirms the presence of electrodeposited MnO2 on the AC surface with an amorphous structure and improved wetting behavior. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements indicate that the MnO2/AC composite electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance (77.6 F g–1 at 5 mV s–1), rate capability, and excellent cycling reversibility for capacitive charge storage. Furthermore, the salt electrosorption capacity is investigated using batch mode experiments at a working voltage of 1.0 V in a 0.01 M NaCl solution. The MnO2/AC composite electrode presents a superior electrosorption capacity of 9.3 mg g–1, which is approximately 1.6-fold higher than that of the pure AC electrode (5.7 mg g–1). This significant improvement can be attributed to the mixed capacitive-Faradaic process, corresponding to the combination of the double-layer charging of the high specific surface area (625 m2 g–1) and the pseudocapacitive redox reaction of MnO2. Therefore, the electrodeposited MnO2/AC composite is a potential electrode material for high-performance CDI.

Abstract:Manganese tetravalent oxide (MnO2), a superstar Faradic electrode material, has been investigated extensively for capacitive desalination, enabling higher salt adsorption capacity compared to the great majority of carbonous electrodes. However, few works paid attention on the relationship between the valences of manganese oxide and their desalination performance. For the first time, we prepared the spindle-like manganese oxides/carbon composites with divalent (MnO@C), trivalent (Mn2O3@C) and divalent/trivalent (Mn3O4@C) manganese by pyrolysis of manganese carbonate precursor under different condition, respectively. The electrochemical behavior in three-electrode system and electrosorption performance obtained in hybrid membrane capacitive deionization (HMCDI) cells assembled with capacitive carbon electrodes were systematically evaluated, respectively. High salt adsorption capacity (as large as 31.3, 22.2, and 18.9 mg·g−1) and corresponding average salt adsorption rates (0.83, 0.53, and 1.71 mg·g−1min−1) were achieved in 500 mg·L−1 NaCl solution for MnO@C, Mn2O3@C, and Mn3O4@C, respectively. During fifteen electrosorption-desorption cycles, ex-situ water contact angle and morphology comparison analysis demonstrated the superior cycling durability of the manganese oxide electrodes and subtle difference between their surface redox. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was also conducted to elaborate the disparity among the valence states of manganese (+2, +3 and +2/+3) for in-depth understanding. This work introduced manganese oxide with various valences to blaze new trails for developing novel Faradic electrode materials with high-efficiency desalination performance by valence engineering.

MnO2 decorated N-doped mesoporous carbon electrodes boost enhanced removal of Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions from wastewater via a hybrid capacitive deionization platform

Abstract:Integrating Faradaic (charge transfer) materials with carbon has been proven extensively to be a valid strategy to prepare highly efficient electrodes for electrochemical desalination or removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater via a capacitive deionization (CDI) platform. However, the influences of preliminary functionalization of the carbon component (e.g., nitrogen doping, hydroxyl grafting) and pairing of cathodes and anodes on the desalination performance have yet to be thoughtfully explored. Herein, we prepared a group of MnO2-decorated mesoporous carbon composites with nitrogen as a dopant (i.e., MK-NMCS, K-NMCS, NMCS, and CS), and systematically evaluated the desalination performance of various cathode//anode pairs in a hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) for capturing Na+, Cu2+, and Pb2+, respectively. Of all electrodes, the MK-NMCS//K-NMCS pair demonstrates the optimum desalination performance based on salt adsorption capacity (SAC) and cycling stability, offering a SAC of 25.4 mg g−1 and a SAC retention of 102.4% after 50 consecutive charge-discharge cycles at 1.2 V in 500 ppm NaCl solution. In addition, the MK-NMCS//K-NMCS electrodes also show the maximum ion adsorption capacity (IAC) toward Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions compared to other cathode//anode pairs, attaining an IAC of 37.0 and 30.0 mg Cu2+ per gram electrode materials at 1.2 V in 500 and 200 ppm Cu2+ solutions, respectively (cf. 32.2 mg Pb2+ per gram electrode materials in 200 ppm Pb2+ solution). Besides, these electrodes exhibit excellent cycling stability when applied in removing each heavy metal ion separately, with an IAC retention of 90.0% and 98.5% after 50 cycles toward Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions, respectively. Mechanical analysis reveals that both heavy metals are likely to be sequestered via capacitive electrosorption by carbon, intercalation with the MnO2, and surface complexation at the external surface of the [MnO6] octahedral layers. These findings underscore the pivotal roles of pre-functionalization of the original carbon and pairing of cathodes and anodes in the configuration of HCDI cells with improved performance and provide valuable insight into the optimization of Faradaic/carbon composite electrodes for remediation of wastewater with heavy metals via CDI platforms.

Abstract:Mn-based oxides are efficient pseudocapacitive electrode materials and have been investigated for capacitive deionization (CDI). However, their poor conductivity seriously affects their desalination performance. In this work, polyaniline coated Mn2O3 nanorods (PANI/Mn2O3) are synthesized by oxidizing a Mn-based metal organic framework (MOF) and subsequent in-situ chemical polymerization. The polyaniline not only acts as a conductive network for faradaic reactions of Mn2O3, but also enhances the desalination rate. PANI/Mn2O3 has a specific capacitance of 87 F g-1 (at 1 A g-1), superior to that of Mn2O3 nanorod (52 F g-1 at 1 A g-1). The hybrid CDI cell constructed with a PANI/Mn2O3 cathode and an active carbon anode shows a high desalination capacity of 21.6 mg g-1, superior recyclability with only 11.3% desalination capacity decay after 30 desalination cycles and fast desalination rate of 2.2 mg g-1 min-1. PANI/Mn2O3 is a potential candidate for high performance CDI applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has gained enormous attention as the electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI) by virtue of its fascinating layer structure and ion storage property. However, the sluggish intrinsic conductivity and limited ion storage capacity of MoS 2 hampered their practical applications. In this work, a manganese doping strategy via a one-step hydrothermal process was adopted to fabricate manganese-doped MoS 2 nanosheets (Mn-MoS 2 ) for efficient capacitive desalination. It is shown that Mn-MoS 2 presents an enlarged interlamellar spacing, enriched mesoporous structure, and excellent hydrophilicity. When used as a working electrode in a hybrid CDI cell, Mn-MoS 2 delivered an outstanding salt removal capacity of 24.5 mg g −1 in a 500 mg L −1 NaCl solution. Notably, Mn-MoS 2 presented fast kinetics in the desalination process, which reached equilibrium in 8 minutes with a removal rate of 3.06 mg g −1 min −1 and superior stability after 30 cycles, which outperformed the performance of most MoS 2 based CDI electrode. XPS spectra indicated that the electronic structure of MoS 2 could be modulated by Mn doping to generate 1 T phase, which further improved the intrinsic activity and ion storage capacity. This study paves a way for the design of MoS 2 and its application in outstanding performance and durable CDI cell.

Abstract:The issue of insufficient freshwater resources has become a worldwide problem, restricting social and economic development. As a promising technology, capacitive deionization (CDI) has been developed to address this problem. In this work, MoS2/g-C3N4 composite with a high supercapacitor performance was successfully synthesized and assembled as the CDI electrode material with its electrochemical properties deeply evaluated. The results demonstrated that the MoS2/g-C3N4-based electrode demonstrated a large specific capacitance of 118.3 F/g (at 1 A/g) and a remarkable rate capacitance retention of 52.16% (61.7 F/g) (at 10 A/g). Moreover, the MoS2/g-C3N4-based electrode exhibited obvious improvement in desalination performance with the maximum electrosorption capacity of 24.5 mg/g. The hierarchical architecture, enhanced conductivity, large surface area, and negative zeta potential of MoS2/g-C3N4 composite facilitated the fast diffusion of ions. The enhanced ions adsorption performance of the MoS2/g-C3N4-based electrode was evaluated based on a capacitive contribution of 85.26% and a diffusion-controlled contribution of 14.74%.

Abstract:Mn3O4/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile ultrasonic method, using manganese chloride as a precursor at room temperature for supercapacitor applications. The nanocomposites were characterized by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively. TEM images revealed that the Mn3O4 nanoparticles were highly dispersed on the surface of the MWCNT. Cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed for the Mn3O4/MWCNT nanocomposites using 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous solutions as the electrolyte in order to find the suitability of the material for supercapacitor applications. The electrochemical results exhibit improved performance for the Mn3O4/MWCNT composite electrode compared to pristine Mn3O4 nanoparticles owing to its structural superiority. The specific capacitance (Cs) of Mn3O4/MWCNT nanocomposites and pristine Mn3O4 was about 473 F g−1 and 259 F g−1 , respectively, at a current density of 1 A g−1. The Mn3O4/MWCNT composite sustains a very strong cyclic performance after 5000 cycles. The capacitance retention of the composite electrode shows highly stable performance confirming its suitability as lasting electrode material for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are important desirable materials in areas such as supercapacitors and capacitive deionization. However, traditional commercial materials are heterogeneous and prone to agglomeration in nanoscale and have structural limitation of electrochemical and desalination performance due to poor transport channels and low capacitance of prepared electrodes. Here, we introduce the facile strategy for controllable preparation of two types of hollow carbon-based nanotubes (HCTs) with amorphous mesoporous structures, which are synthesized by employing a MnO2 linear template method and calcination of polymer precursors. The porous N-doped HCT (NHCT) shows a specific capacitance of 412.6 F g-1 (1 A g-1), with 77.3% rate capability (20 A g-1). The fabricated asymmetric MnO2//NHCT supercapacitor displays the energy density of 55.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 803.9 W kg-1. Furthermore, two typical MnO2//HCT and MnO2//NHCT devices both show the selective desalination performance of sulfate, and the MnO2//NHCT device possesses a high deionization value of 11.37 mg g-1 (500 mg L-1 Na2SO4). These fabricated hollow carbon-based architectures with functional characteristics promise potential applications in energy and environmental related fields.

Phase- and Crystallinity-Tailorable MnO 2 as an Electrode for Highly Efficient Hybrid Capacitive Deionization (HCDI)

Abstract:Hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) is an emerging and promising technology for water desalination and has been extensively explored in recent years. Designing a structure-tailorable electrode material has been proved to be a valid strategy for achieving a higher salt adsorption capacity (SAC). In this study, MnO2 materials with tailorable phase compositions and crystallinities were prepared hydrothermally and then evaluated as electrodes for removal of ions from a NaCl solution in a membrane-free HCDI cell. MnO2 electrode materials tested in the HCDI system include poorly crystalline δ-MnO2 along with abundant amorphous phases (MnO2-1h); crystalline δ-MnO2 with plentiful amorphous MnO2 (MnO2-2h); MnO2 mixtures of α-, δ-, and amorphous MnO2 (MnO2-5h); and α-MnO2 nanowires with minor amorphous MnO2 (MnO2-12h). Our results revealed that the phase composition and the crystallinity of MnO2 materials govern their specific capacitances and thus the SAC values. When the cell voltage is 1.2 V, the lamellar-structured poorly crystalline MnO2-1h electrode with the lowest crystallinity demonstrates the highest SACs of 13.84 mg g–1 in 100 mg L–1 NaCl (1.71 mM) and 21.32 mg g–1 in 500 mg L–1 NaCl (8.56 mM) solutions, respectively. The desalination efficiencies of the MnO2−1h electrode are remarkable and much greater than other MnO2-based electrodes under similar conditions (e.g., NaCl concentrations, cell voltage, etc.). Abstract:The design of high-performance electrode materials with excellent desalination ability has always been a research goal for efficient capacitive deionization (CDI). Herein, a hybrid architecture with Cu/Cu2O nanospheres anchored on porous carbon nanosheets (Cu/Cu2O/C) was first synthesized by pyrolyzing a two-dimensional (2D) Cu-based metal-organic framework and then evaluated as a cathode for hybrid CDI. The as-prepared Cu/Cu2O/C exhibits a hierarchically porous structure with a high specific surface area of 305 m2 g-1 and large pore volume of 0.55 cm3 g-1, which is favorable to accelerating ion migration and diffusion. The porous carbon nanosheet matrix with enhanced conductivity will facilitate the Faradaic reactions of Cu/Cu2O nanospheres during the desalination process. The Cu/Cu2O/C hybrid architecture displays a high specific capacitance of 142.5 F g-1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s-1 in 1 M NaCl solution. The hybrid CDI constructed using the Cu/Cu2O/C cathode and a commercial activated carbon anode exhibits a high desalination capacity of 16.4 mg g-1 at an operation voltage of 1.2 V in 500 mg L-1 NaCl solution. Additionally, the hybrid CDI exhibits a good cycling stability with 18.3% decay in the desalination capacity after 20 electrosorption-desorption cycles. Thus, the Cu/Cu2O/C composite is expected to be a promising cathode material for hybrid CDI.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging desalination technology which employs high surface area porous electrode materials to eliminate ions from water by electrosorption. Herein, we propose an acidified bamboo-based activated carbon (BACa)/manganese dioxide (MnO2) composite synthesize by a simple co-precipitation technique. Bamboo-based activated carbon exhibit high electrical conductivity, hierarchical pore structure, and large specific surface area, due to which it is regarded as a promising candidate for seawater desalination. In this work after acidification, significant amounts of oxygen-containing functional groups are introduced onto the surface of the carbon, which enhanced the hydrophilicity of whole composite, while the MnO2 nanoparticles with sufficient ion migration channels provide a high adsorption capability and fast reaction kinetics. Consequently, the synthesized BACa/MnO2 composite achieves a tremendous specific capacitance of 158 F g-1 at 10 mV s-1, excellent electrosorption capacity of 10.3 mg g-1, and outstanding recyclability in the application of CDI, which is in comparison better than that of bare bamboo-based activated carbon electrode. The present study endorses the promising application of the low-cost high-performance BACa/MnO2 in capacitive deionization.

Abstract:In this work, metal–organic framework (MOF)/ reduced graphene oxide (RG)/ carbon nanotube (CNT) composite was synthesized by solvent method. Zeoliticimidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were linked by CNT and attached to graphene lamelayer. After carbonization and acid etching, the obtained N-doped derived hierarchically porous carbon material (NPC/CNT-RG) possessed three-dimensional (3D) conductive network structure, which was not only conductive to promote ions rapidly diffusion, but also provide more active sites and shot the ions transport path. The NPC/CNT-RG electrode displayed a high specific capacitance of 412.5 F/g. Moreover, NPC/CNT-RG electrode exhibited an excellent desalination performance in NaCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 (initial concentration of 500 mg/L and the voltage set at 1.2 V) solutions, the salt adsorption capacity (SAC) were 28.99 mg/g, 33.01 mg/g and 34.84 mg/g, respectively. This derived carbon composite material as electrode might be beneficial to improve the desalination performance in CDI.
