Abstract:We have observed hysteretic loops in the structural phase transition of VO2 thin films using Raman microscopy. A model is presented concerning the size distribution to illustrate the relative Raman intensity–temperature hysteretic loops in the VO2 films. We also found the different changing behavior of Ag and Bg phonon modes during the phase transition process.

Abstract:The study of first-order structural transformations has attracted extensive attention due to their significant scientific and industrial importance. However, it remains challenging to exactly determine the nucleation sites at the very beginning of the transformation. Here, we report the atomic scale real-time observation of a unique defect-mediated reversible phase transition between the low temperature phase (LTP) and the high temperature phase (HTP) of VO2(A). In situ Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images clearly indicate that both phase transitions (from the HTP to the LTP and from the LTP to the HTP) start at the defect sites in parent phases. Intriguingly, the structure of the defects within the LTP is demonstrated to be the HTP of VO2 (A), and the defect in the HTP of VO2(A) is determined to be the LTP structure of VO2(A). These findings are expected to broaden our current understanding of the first-order phase transition and shed light on controlling materials' structure-property phase transition by "engineering" defects in applications.

Abstract:Single crystalline VO2(A) nanowires were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structural transition and temperature-driven conductivity switching of the VO2(A) nanowires were investigated. Our experimental results show that VO2(A) nanowires exhibit a distinct structural transition accompanied with an order of magnitude change in resistance, and a clear temperature-dependent current switching hysteresis. In order to analyze experimental results, theoretically, the electrical conductivity behavior was found to be consistent with Mott's small polaron model, the first-principles calculations also indicated that the apical V–O bond changes were mainly responsible for the band gap evolution and hence led to the conductivity switching.

Abstract:VO2 as a typical system of first?order phase transition has been extensively investigated, however, the studies of its metastable phase VO2(A) are limited. The in?situ TEM study of the phase transition in VO2 (A) nanowires was reported in this article. The results reveal that the high temperature phase ( HTP) of VO2 nucleated within the low temperature phase ( LTP) and extended along the nanowires' growth direction. In addition, the interface structure between the LTP and HTP is unveiled by Cs?corrected scanning transmission electron microscope ( STEM) high angle annular dark field ( HAADF) images. Such information is crucial for understanding the phase transition mechanism of VO2 ( A) .

Abstract:We investigated the temperature-driven structural phase transition (SPT) process of free-standing monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2 (M)) micron-sized rods by Raman spectroscopy. With increasing temperature, the phase transition sequence goes monoclinic M-1 -> monoclinic M-1/monoclinic M-2/rutile (R) -> monoclinic M-2/R -> R. The fully metallic R phase is reached at 50 degrees C, which is 7 degrees C lower than the value of nanoparticles in our study and 18 degrees C lower than the value of early reports on VO2 (M) bulk materials. The intermediate M-2 phase, which plays a critical role in the monoclinic to rutile transition (MRT), was clearly observed in both heating and cooling process of the micron-sized free-standing VO2 (M) rods. We suggest that the existence of nucleating defects in our samples, which have an important effect on the nucleation of the R phase, are responsible for the reduction of the phase transition temperature and the appearance of the M-2 phase. This supplies a possible way to expand the practical applications of one dimensional VO2 materials.

Abstract:In this study, the phase transition of NaVO2F2 was measured at different temperatures via in situ Raman spectroscopy. The NaVO2F2 compounds were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and were identified to be monoclinic with the P21/c space group at room temperature by XRD. Accordingly, the variations of Raman shifts and intensities of the characteristic peaks for NaVO2F2 associated with temperature were obtained and investigated. It was confirmed that NaVO2F2 had three types of phase transitions, which occurred in the temperature region from 78 K to 573 K. Further, the results indicate that transition from a low-temperature phase (I) to another low-temperature phase (II), low-temperature phase (II) to P21/c phase and P21/c phase to P21/m phase occurred near the three temperature points of 93 K, 233 K, and 453 K, respectively, during the heating process. Therefore, a novel characterization method was provided for further research on the phase transition theory and performance of vanadate compounds.
Transient dynamics of the phase transition in VO2 revealed by mega electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition accompanied by a structural transition near room temperature. This transition can be triggered by an ultrafast laser pulse. Exotic transient states, such as a metallic state without structural transition, were also proposed. These unique characteristics let VO2 have great potential in thermal switchable devices and photonic applications. Although great efforts have been made, the atomic pathway during the photoinduced phase transition is still not clear. Here, we synthesized freestanding quasi-single-crystal VO2 films and examined their photoinduced structural phase transition with mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction. Leveraging the high signal-to-noise ratio and high temporal resolution, we observe that the disappearance of vanadium dimers and zigzag chains does not coincide with the transformation of crystal symmetry. After photoexcitation, the initial structure is strongly modified within 200 femtoseconds, resulting in a transient monoclinic structure without vanadium dimers and zigzag chains. Then, it continues to evolve to the final tetragonal structure in approximately 5 picoseconds. In addition, only one laser fluence threshold instead of two thresholds suggested in polycrystalline samples was observed in our quasi-single-crystal samples. Our findings provide new essential information for a comprehensive understanding of the photoinduced ultrafast phase transition in VO2.

Abstract:The phase transition process from monoclinic VO2 (B) to monoclinic rutile-type VO2 (M) nanorods under hydrothermal conditions was explored. VO2 (M) nanorods were formed by nucleating nanobumps on the surface of VO2 (B) nanorods and growing them until the VO2 (B) transformed entirely to VO2 (M). The metal–semiconductor transition temperature of VO2 (M) nanobumps exhibited an extremely strong size effect. The critical size for the nano-size effect was determined to be <13.0nm; below this size, phase transition temperatures were significantly reduced from 68.0°C for bulk VO2 (M) to 5.0—17.0°C and from −14.5 to −11.0°C for heating and cooling semicycles, respectively. These results are attractive because they indicate a new strategy to regulate the phase transition temperatures purely through the particle size.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides have fascinating characteristics, and have been exploited for various applications, such as Mott transistors, optical switches and strain sensors, etc. Vanadium dioxide is a special and important transition-metal oxide, and exhibits the significant behavior of metal-insulator transition. In this work, single crystalline VO2(A) nanowires have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Due to the size and surface effects, the nanowires with different widths show great disparities in their hysteresis loops, phase transition temperatures and electrical conductivities. Our results show that the phase transition temperature is linearly dependent on the inverse of the nanowire widths, and a similar relationship between the electrical conductivity and the width of the nanowires has also been found. More interestingly, the first-order phase transition of the nanowire even coverts into high-order continuous phase transition when the width is below a critical size. To explore the intrinsic influence of the size and surface effects, the analysis of the transmission electron microscopy measurements showed that the rough surface structure of the nanowire is very different to the internal structure, and the thickness of this rough surface structure almost remains unchanged as the with of the nanowire decreases. Our results indicated that the surface structure has a remarkable effect on the phase transition characteristics decreasing nanowire width, and the suitable heterogeneous nucleation originating from the rough surface structure should play a crucial role in properties of the VO2(A) nanowires. Size-dependent phase transition features of the VO2(A) nanowires also suggest that the size and surface effects must be taken into consideration when designing VO2 nanodevices.

Abstract:The influence of annealing treatment on the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of VO2 (M) nanorods was studied. The phase structure and content of the products were analysed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and the MIT was analysed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that VO2 (M) nanorods have uneven thickness and round tip in comparison with a uniform thickness and sharp tip in VO2 (B) nanorods, and there are two MITs in the DSC curves in the phase mixture of VO2 (M) and VO2 (B), one is situated at low temperature region and another is at high temperature side, and the high temperature MIT exists only in pure VO2 (M) at and beyond annealing temperature of 550°C. The mechanisms of these two MITs were discussed and analysed.

Abstract:The popular dual electronic (Mott) and structural (Peierls) transitions in VO2 are explored using x-ray absorption spectromicroscopy with high spatial and spectral resolutions. It is found that during both heating and cooling, the electronic transition always precedes the structural Peierls transition. Between the two transitions, there are intermediate states that are spectrally isolated here.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide (VO2) thin films were prepared on Si (100) substrates by direct current magnetron sputtering at room temperature, and then, postannealing was conducted at 450 degrees C for 2 h in vacuum. Structural characterizations demonstrated that the thin films exhibited porous morphology upon thermal annealing and the porosity and pore size depended on the oxygen flow rate in the process of film fabrication. Raman spectra were measured in the temperature range of 303-343 K, and resistance measurement was conducted in the temperature range of 293-363 K, to study the influence of porous morphology on the phase transition in VO2 thin films. It was illustrated that the porous morphology could provide a free space to release the stress induced in the monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition of VO2, and lower the transition temperature to a certain degree. Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has drawn significant attention for its near room temperature insulator to metal transition and associated structural phase transition. The underlying Physics behind the temperature induced insulator to metal and concomitant structural phase transition in VO2 is yet to be fully understood. We have investigated the kinetics of the above phase transition behaviors of VO2 with the help of resistivity measurements and Raman spectroscopy. Resistance thermal hysteresis scaling and relaxation measurements across the temperature induced insulator to metal transition reveal the unusual behaviour of this first-order phase transition, whereas Raman relaxation measurements show that the temperature induced structural phase transition in VO2 follows usual behaviour and is consistent with mean field prediction. At higher temperature sweeping rates decoupling of insulator to metal transition and structural phase transition have been confirmed. The observed anomalous first order phase transition behavior in VO2 is attributed to the unconventional quasi particle dynamics, i.e. significantly lowered electronic thermal conductivity across insulator to metal transition, which is confirmed by ultrafast optical pump-probe time domain thermoreflectance measurements.

Abstract:Raman microscopy was widely utilized to study the temperature dependent evolution of vibration modes of vanadium dioxide thin films in the vicinity of phase transition. In this study, the temperature dependent Raman spectra characterization was performed on epitaxial growth vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) thin film, which was fabricated on m-sapphire substrate using polymer-assisted deposition method with a thickness of 50 nm. The results show that the characteristic phonon modes of VO2 monoclinic phase got weakened with the increase of temperature and finally disappeared well above the phase transition. Then, by comparing the Raman spectra in heating and cooling cycles under dependent temperatures, a phase diagram across the metal-insulator transition was proposed identifying monoclinic, intermediate, and rutile regimes. The intermediate region was attributed to the co-existence of monoclinic and rutile phase, which might be caused by strains and defects within the grains of the film. Moreover, MIT of epitaxial growth VO2 film observed in this study is much sharper than that of polycrystalline film reported by other workers, indicating the MIT property is closely related to the crystal quality of VO 2 thin film.

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) with its unique sharp resistivity change at the metal-insulator transition (MIT) has been extensively considered for the near-future terahertz/infrared devices and energy harvesting systems. Controlling the epitaxial quality and microstructures of vanadium dioxide thin films and understanding the metal-insulator transition behaviors are therefore critical to novel device development. The metal-insulator transition behaviors of the epitaxial vanadium dioxide thin films deposited on Al2O3 (0001) substrates were systematically studied by characterizing the temperature dependency of both Raman spectrum and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Our findings on the correlation between the nucleation dynamics of intermediate monoclinic (M2) phase with microstructures will open a new avenue for the design and integration of advanced heterostructures with controllable multifunctionalities for sensing and imaging system applications.

Abstract:The phase transition process from VO2 (B) to VO2 (A) was first observed through a mild hydrothermal approach, using hybrid density functional theory (DFT) calculations and crystallographic VO2 topology analysis. All theoretical analyses reveal that VO2 (A) is a thermodynamically stable phase and has a lower formation energy compared with the metastable VO2 (B). For the first time, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of the V L-edge and O K-edge was performed on different VO2 phases, and the differences in the electronic structure of the two polymorphic forms provide further experimental evidence of the more stable VO2 (A). Consequently, transformation from VO2 (B) to VO2 (A) is much easier to be realized from a dynamical point of view. Notably, the transformation of VO2 (B) into VO2 (A) show the sequence VO2 (B)-high-temperature VO2 (AH) phase-low-temperature VO2 (A) phase, which was achieved by hydrothermal treatment, respectively. Also, an alternative synthesis route was proposed based on the above hydrothermal transformation, and VO2 (A) was successfully prepared via the simple one-step hydrothermal method by hydrolysis of VO(acac)(2) (acac = acetylacetonate). Therefore, VO2 nanostructures with controlled phase compositions can be obtained in high yields. Through elucidating the structural evolution in the crystallographic shear mechanism, we can easily guide the design of other metal oxide nanostructures with controllable phases.

Abstract:We studied the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in single-domain, single crystalline vanadium dioxide (VO2) microbeams with infrared microspectroscopy. The unique nature of such samples allowed us to probe the intrinsic behavior of both insulating and metallic phases in the close vicinity of IMT, and investigate the IMT driven by either strain or temperature independently. We found that the VO2 insulating band gap narrows rapidly upon heating, and the infrared response undergoes an abrupt transition at both strain- and temperature-induced IMT. The results are consistent with recent studies attributing the opening of VO2 insulating band gap to a correlation- assisted Peierls transition.

Abstract:VO2 single crystals with unprecedented quality, exhibiting a first‐order metal–insulator transition (MIT) at 67.8 °C and an insulator –insulator transition (IIT) at ∼49 °C, are grown using a self‐flux evaporation method. Using synchrotron‐based X‐ray microdiffraction analysis, it is shown that the IIT is related to a structural phase transition (SPT) from the monoclinic M2 phase to the M1 phase upon heating while the MIT occurs together with a SPT of M1 to the rutile R phase. All previous reports have shown that VO2 exists in the M1 phase at room temperature in contrast to the M2 phase observed in this work. We suggest that internal strain inside single crystal VO2 may generate the previously unobserved IIT and the unusual room temperature structure. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a strongly correlated oxide widely studied for applications in electronics due to its metal-insulator transition at approximately 341 K. While thin films and nanostructures of VO2 have been grown on common rigid substrates like Al2O3, TiO2, and Si, strong chemical interaction between the substrates and VO2 can induce significant strain during the metal-insulator transition. This not only broadens the temperature range of transition but also leads to the formation of alternating insulating and metallic domains, hence complicating room temperature device applications. Here, we report growth of VO2 wires by conventional as well as van der Waals epitaxy and compare their phase transition dynamics. By revealing metal-insulator transition proceeding via a single domain within a narrow temperature range of 2 K, we present van der Waals epitaxy as an effective tool to tune phase transition kinetics in VO2 or similar systems.

Abstract:New-phase VO2 micro/nanostructures built by nanoflakes have been first synthesized by a hydrothermal method with NH4VO3 as precursor in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). The combined structural analysis of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy determined the crystal structure as a new-phase vanadium dioxide, which is the isostructure of monoclinic NiWO4 and designated as VO2(D). In particular, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provides the direct evidence of vanadium ion in the four oxidation state. The formation energy of VO2(D) was estimated and showed a very close value to rutile-type VO2(R), which guided the preparation of VO2(R/M) by making use of the structural transformation from VO2(D) to VO2(R) at 320 degrees C, which was a comparatively lower temperature than other vanadium oxide, such as VO2(B). The obtained VO2(R) shows the reversible metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) near critical temperature (T-c) which is associated with clear changes in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves. In addition, the temperature-dependent DC electrical conductivity of the new-phased VO2(D) exhibits Arrhenius-type behaviour, which reveals its semiconducting character with a band gap of 0.33 eV. ESR and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements were employed to obtain information on the magnetic properties of VO2(D), which correspond to one-dimentional Heisenberg system.
