Abstract:The sodium lignosulphonate polyethenoxy ether (SL-PEG) was prepared by electrophilic substitution reaction using sodium lignosulphonate (SL) and polyethylene glycol (PEG600). The chemical structure of SL-PEG was characterized and the weight-average molecular weight of SL-PEG was up to 32900, because of the grafting of many polyethenoxy ether units. The grafting reaction was found to occur at phenolic hydroxy of SL, thus the phenolic hydroxy contents of SL-PEG reduced from 1. 17 to 0. 30 mmol . g(-1). Subsequently, the lignin-based cationic-anionic surfactant (CA-SL) was prepared via electrostatic self assembled method combining SL-PEG with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The surface activity and aqueous solution behaviour of CA-SL was studied, the result showed that the CA-SL aqueous solution presents far lower surface tension (minimum to 38. 75 mN . m(-1)) and critical aggregation concentration (0. 0050 0. 0065 g . L-1) than SL. In order to investigate the dispersing and stabilizing properties of CA-SL, the CA-SL was used as dispersants to prepare imidacloprid and dimethomorph suspension concentrates. The results indicated that the CA-SL has good grinding and dispersion effect, and these two suspension concentrates exhibit good stability during the heat storage process, owing to its excellent ability to restrain the creaming and particle coarsening effectively.

Abstract:Surfactants from modified lignin have received growing attention recently. Lignin is an inevitable by-product of the chemical manufacturing processes for cellulose and pulping. Furthermore, this class of chemical has vast availability around the world. Due to the interactions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups on the interface, lignin modified surfactants present favorable surfactivity. In this paper, alkali lignin (AL) suffered the liquefaction treatment into liquefid alkali lignin (L-AL), of which major constituents were lignin-phenols. Hydrophilic modified L-AL was synthesized with epoxy chloropropane then with polyglycol. The surface tension, watersolubility and HLB value of the productions were characterized. Then the surfactant was applied to the experiments of foam properties, detergency and emulsifying power. The results showed that the modified surfactant had fine solubility in water, relatively higher HLB value of 16.26 and lower surface tention. The production had lower foaming power and foam stability. Though its decontamination performance was relatively weak，however the emulsifying power presented pretty well.

Abstract:A simple and effective chemical method based on Mannich reaction, sulfonation, and acylation was adopted to anchor the hydrophilic sulfonic groups and lipophilic long carbon chains onto alkaline lignin. The obtained products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elemental analysis, and the surface activity was evaluated by interfacial tension, which was determined by a maximum bubble pressure method. The results demonstrated that the ASAL showed high surface activity in comparison to lignosulfonate and the interfacial tension reached 5.0 (10(-3)Nm(-1)) when the mass fraction of ASAL was 5%, in agreement with the properties of good surfactants.** [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Based on the application of alkali lignin polymer modification, not only can the alkali lignin green treatment be realized, but also the dependence on petroleum-based materials can be effectively reduced, and the properties of the modified polymer can be enhanced. Therefore, in this study, ?-cinnamon group as the lipophilic group and diethylenetriamine group as the hydrophilic group were successfully introduced into alkali lignin to construct a lignin-based amphiphilic cationic surfactant. The lipophilic group introduced through the amine methylation reaction causes the lignin derivative to form a regular arrangement of lipophilic groups at the oil phase interface, and diethylenetriamine is introduced into the lignin through amine methylation reaction and ketoamine condensation reaction. Effectively enhance the hydrophilicity of the lignin derivative. The characterization of this lignin derivative is accomplished by different methods, such as elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The physical and chemical properties of the lignin derivative are tested by testing its stability in acidic solution, Zeta potential, surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC) and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB). Studies have shown that this amphiphilic cationic surfactant obtained by modifying alkali lignin has good performance, which means that it can be used as a W/O emulsion as an asphalt emulsifier, wetting agent, etc.

Abstract:Novel sodium sulfated aryl oleic acid alkanolamide surfactants (SSAOAA) with different hydrophobic groups are prepared. An aromatic ring introduced to a long alkyl chain has a significant effect on the effectiveness in reducing water surface tension. The critical micelle concentration (c.m.c.) of one product and the surface tension (gamma c.m.c.) at the c.m.c. are investigated. Surface active properties of sodium sulfated aryl oleic acid alkanolamides are compared to those of conventional sulfated fatty acid alkanolamides. Results show that the c.m.c. decreases with increasing the sizes of alkyl chains.

Abstract:Alkyl glycidyl ether and 3-chloropropionic acid were grafted onto alkaline lignin (KL) to obtain lignin-based alcohol ether carboxylate surfactant (KLS) and its structure, surface tension, emulsifying ability and detergency of cotton fiber were investigated. Then, the alkaline lignin was pretreated by using ultrasound to activate the KL molecular. The pretreated KL showed lower Mn and narrow molecular weight distribution. The absorbance ratio of A1125/A1600 and A1047/A1600 of pretreated KL increased as the time of the ultrasound increased, indicating that new phenolic hydroxyl groups were formed. Further study revealed that the Mn, surface tension and emulsifying ability were significantly affected by the reaction temperature and ultrasound treatment. The sample (KLSU) obtained at 70 °C with ultrasound pretreatment had a good surface activity and emulsifying ability. The critical micelle concentration of KLSU was 3.1 g/L and the corresponding surface tension was 29.1 mN/m. The KLSU was used as a novel surfactant for detergent and exhibited significant detergency property. The effect of different types of surfactant on the detergency, zeta potential, surface tension and particle distribution of mixture solution containing KLSU were investigated. The KLSU solution mixed with sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate showed good detergency, surface tension and stability. This article highlighted the potential usage of lignin-based alcohol ether carboxylate surfactant in detergent.Graphical

Abstract:A series of modified lignosulfonates containing aliphatic amide residues were prepared from kraft lignin (wood and straw) via a modification route, including Mannich reaction with aliphatic polyamine, acylation by oleyl chloride and sulfomethylation. The interfacial tensions of products were measured and the effects on the interfacial tension were discussed. The results indicate that the products have the excellent interfacial activity between the Shengli crude oil and the solutions of products, so that without the addition of other surfactants the ultralow interfacial tension can be achieved within the wide range of surfactant concentration and sodium hydroxide. Therefore, the prepared modified lignosulfonates can be applied as surfactants in enhanced oil recovery.

The critical micellar concentration (c.m.c.) and surface tension (gamma(cmc)) at c.m.c. of all the products were compared. Tests of surface properties showed that these novel modified lignin surfactants exhibited good surface activity.

Abstract:Lignosulfonate is a type of macromolecular surfactant widely used as interfacial additive in various industrial fields and it is produced during chemical pulping process In this paper, we present a new effective method for measurement of the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) in water solution, with which a value of 038 g L-1 was obtained Through the determination of CAC and observation by DLS, the state and dynamics of the formation of the SL micelles were disclosed The results showed that SL was the state of individual molecules when its mass concentration was less than CAC the individual SL molecules started to aggregate above CAC and thus micelles formed and grew with increasing SL concentration The SL solution was quickly frozen and the structures of SL molecules or micelles were observed by ESEM, revealing that the spherical micelles were the main form of SL in the solution Based on the results the spherical hollow vesicular structure is proposed as a model of the aggregated micelles of SL in the solution

Abstract:Sodium lignosulfonate (LS) is a lignin derivative, which has abundant resources and is an environmentally friendly raw material. In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and stearyltrimethylammonium bromide (STAB) were combined with LS at the isoelectric point for hydrophobic self-assembly. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and static contact angle data proved that LS/CTAB could form colloidal spheres, while LS/STAB could not form such spheres. The impact of the molecular weight of LS on the self-assembly of LS/CTAB was investigated by using the TEM, FTIR, and static contact angle data. The obtained results showed that LS/CTAB with 10 000–50 000 Da of LS could form colloidal spheres, while LS/CTAB with 3000–5000 Da of LS could not. In addition, the TEM images revealed that the solvent plays an important role in the morphology of LS/CTAB colloidal spheres. Finally, LS/CTAB colloidal spheres were used for the encapsulation of ibuprofen (IBU). The in vitro release behavior of IBU was proven to be pH-sensitive and exhibited controlled release properties. More than 85% IBU could be preserved in simulated gastric fluid, and over 75% could be released in simulated intestinal fluid. This work provides a theoretical basis for the preparation of LS/CTAB colloidal spheres and facilitates the expansion of its applications as a drug carrier.

Abstract:Surfactants made from modified lignin are attracting growing attention; therefore, a lignin-phenol nonionic surfactant named ML-AL has been prepared by modifying liquefied industrial alkali lignin (L-AL). Its basic physical and chemical properties have been shown to be favorable. In this work, anionic surfactants of sodium fatty acid soap (carbon numbers 12, 16, and 18) and sulfur-containing anionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate) were chosen to mix with ML-AL in water-soluble media. The surface properties of each binary mixed solution system with anionic surfactant were investigated. At the same time, the mixed micelles formed by ML-AL and each anionic surfactant were studied. Non-ideal mixed micelles were obtained via ML-AL and the tested anionic surfactant. The interaction parameter (beta(M)) and excess free energy (Delta G(excess)) were both negative. Meanwhile, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of mixed systems (formed by ML-AL and each anionic surfactant in aqueous solution) were lower than those of a single-component system (ML-AL or single anionic surfactant). There was an optimum dosage ratio of about 0.4 in terms of synergistic effects. This research could provide a foundation for practical applications of combinations with anionic surfactants in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) as sacrificial agent (SA) was investigated on the effectiveness in reducing Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium (CTAB) cationic surfactant adsorption. X-Ray diffractometer (XRD), X-Ray fluorescent (XRF), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive X-Ray (EDX) and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) were used to characterize the mineralogy, elemental composition and surface area of kaolinite. Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) was used to characterized kaolinite and SLS. The adsorption was done by depletion method using Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Effectiveness as sacrificial agent in mixture and pre-treatment were studied. The underlying mechanism that responsible for the effectiveness of SA were interpreted and examined. Positive outcome shows that SLS as SA manages to reduce CTAB adsorption. The SLS as SA successfully in reducing CTAB adsorption by using pre-treatment method. Effective underlying mechanism involved is SLS as SA adsorbed readily with the cation bridging assistance from the divalent salt and reversed the surface charge by creating a second layer. As high as 50% CTAB reduction had been seen in the experimental work. This study shows that SLS as SA effectively reducing the CTAB adsorption in pre-treatment.

Abstract:Alkali lignin (AL), an anionic polymer, is a byproduct of the paper industry. AL was first modified by quaternization to synthesize quaternized alkali lignin (QAL). The aim of the present study is to reveal the effects of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) on the microstructure of QAL. The interaction between SDBS and QAL is studied by means of zeta potential, fluorescence spectrophotometer, and static contact angle measurement. The results indicated that there is an electrostatic interaction and a hydrophobic interaction between QAL and SDBS. The SDBS/QAL complex can self-assemble into lignin-based colloidal spheres (LCSs) in an ethanol/water mixture, which have remarkable avermectin (AVM) encapsulation efficiency and antiphotolysis performance. The cumulative release amount of AVM encapsulated by LCS (LCS@AVM) after 72 h was 77%, and the release was still going on. The release behaviors of LCS@AVM can be controlled by adjusting the ratio (w/w) of LCS to AVM. More than 85% of AVM could be preserved even after 96 h of UV irradiation. LCS showed controlled release and UV-blocking performance for AVM.
Study On The Preparation And Deinking Efficiency Of The Modified Lignin-Phenols Surfactants

Abstract:In recent years, surfactants from modified lignin have received growing attention. Lignin is an inevitable by-product of the chemical manufacturing processes for cellulose and pulping. Furthermore, this class of chemical has vast availability around the world. Lignin modified surfactant is usually prepared by grafting various hydrophobic or hydrophilic groups onto the aromatic nucleus. Due to the interactions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups on the interface, lignin modified surfactants present favorable surfactivity, which may be potentially proper for the decontamination of secondary fiber recovery. In this paper, lignin materials, alkali lignin (AL) and lignosulphonate (LS), were prepared through liquefaction treatment into lignin-phenols products. Then, hydrophobic modified LS and hydrophilic modified AL were ordinal synthesized with epoxy chloropropane then with laurinol and polyglycol. The surface tension, watersolubility and HLB value of the productions were characterized. Then the surfactants were applied to the deinking of secondary fiber in flotation process under weak alkali conditions. And the experiments by using the lignin products combined with other nonionic and anionic surfactants were also carried out. Evaluation and comparison were made through the goals of brightness and deinking efficiency. The results showed that the increment of brightness for OMG flotation were 11.04 and 10.61% ISO and the deinking efficiency were 60.85% and 53.06% by individually taking modified AL and LS as deinking agent. Under the condition of the two lignin surfactants mixed with nonionic and anionic surfactants, the results would be improved. The brightness was increased 10.65 and 12.32% ISO and the ratio of deinking was 68.66% and 60.82%. Furthermore, the trials of adding mineral clay to the combined agents were investigated. It was found that it had no negative influence on the deinking results. But, the state of the deinking agent with clay was powder. That means it would be more convenient for the final products in transporting and quantificational application. The results of this study indicated that the surfactants from modified lignin-phenols were fitting to remove OMG ink in weak alkali conditions.
Synthesis and characterization of diethanolamine-based lignin nonionic surfactant.

Abstract:Alkaline lignin was classificated according to the method of acid precipitation.The classified lignin at pH value 4-6 was treated with epichlorohydrin and diethanolamine to prepare diethanolamine-based lignin nonionic surfactant.The structure of the product was characterized by FT-IR and determination of nitrogen content.The surface-active property and solubility were investigated by surface tension experiment and turbidity test.The results showed that solid content of the surfactant is 32.6%,nitrogen content is 1.99%,FT-IR spectrum showed the introduction of diethanolamine into lignin.Surface tension of aqueous solution decreased to 53.27mN/m,indicating the favorable surface activity in aqueous solution.The turbidity determination of blended solution of diethanolamine-based lignin nonionic surfactant(DLNS) with dodecyl sodium sulfate(SDS) showed low turbidity and superior effect in quite a wide range of V(SDS)∶V(DLNS)20∶3-20∶20.

Abstract:With the cheap and abundant resource of alkali lignin as feedstock, surfactants for enhanced oil recovery were synthesized by amination and alkylation reaction of lignosulfonate. The effects of amination conditions, including the ratio of raw materials, amination reagent, temperature, and reaction time, on nitrogen contents and surface tension of the surfactants were investigated. The results showed that ethylenediamine was more suitable for amination, and the molar ratio of alkali lignin, ethylenediamine, and formaldehyde was 1:2:1.5 at 80 degrees C for 5 hours. The structure of synthesized products was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The HLB value of synthesized product was 10. The interfacial tension between Daqing crude oil and synthetic water could be decreased to 10(-2) mN/m with synthesized surfactant and NaOH at 45 degrees C. Moreover, the effects of molecular weight of surfactants on interfacial tension were also studied. The synthesized surfactant (M-w > 10,000) showed a better interfacial activity on Daqing crude oil.
Alkyl Chain Cross-Linked Sulfobutylated Lignosulfonate: A Highly Efficient Dispersant for Carbendazim Suspension Concentrate

Abstract:A new family of highly water-soluble alkyl chain cross-linked sulfobutylated lignosulfonates (AASLSs) with a three-dimensional network structure and naked alkyl sulfonic acid groups were readily prepared by using 1,4-butane sultone (BS) and C6H12Br2 by a one step reaction in water, which simultaneously improved the sulfonation degree and molecular weight. GPC, 1H NMR, FTIR and functional group content tests confirmed their cross-linked chemical structure and efficient nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism. Furthermore, the dispersion properties of AASLSs in a carbendazim suspension concentrate (SC) system were investigated. AASLS4 with high molecular weights (Mw) and moderate sulfonation degrees showed suspensibility of 99% in 45% carbendazim SC after hot storage at 50 °C for 14 days. Meanwhile, AASLS4 also showed smaller SC particle size and better rheological performance than commercial lignosulfonate. The adsorption isotherms and ζ-potential of AASLSs on carbendazim SC particles were studied to reveal the dispersion mechanism. The alkyl chain cross-linked structure and long alkyl chain-containing sulfonic acid groups contribute to the excellent dispersion properties on carbendazim SC. Our modification approach for lignin might provide a novel concept and prospective avenue for the design of efficient dispersants.

Abstract:A series of cationic surfactants,N-allyl-2-alkyl pyridinium chlorides(GS-n),were prepared from long-chain alkyl pyridine and allyl chloride,and their surface activity were evaluated adopting surface tension method.The results showed that GS-n exhibited capability in reducing the surface tension of water;the lowest CMC(concentration of criticle lump scrap) of the Nallyl-2-cetyl pyridinium chloride(GS-16) was 0.527 mmol·L~(-1); their CMC were lower obviously with the lengthening of alkyl chain;γ_(cmc) values were decreased firstly and then increased;the lowest γ_(cmc) value of GS-12 was 27.1 mN·m~(-1).

Abstract:The surface tensions of various surfactant aqueous solution and the dynamic interfacial tensions between the Shengli oil field of China crude oil and the solution of novel surfactants, a series of single-component alkylmethylnaphthalene sulfonates (AMNS) including various the length of alkyl chains (hexyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl and tetradecyl, developed in our laboratory), were measured. It is found that synthesized surfactants exhibited great capability and efficiency of lowering the solution surface tension. The critical micelle concentrations, CMC were: 6.1–0.018×10−3molL−1, and the surface tensions at CMC, γCMC were: 28.27–35.06mNm−1. It is also found that the added surfactants are greatly effective in reducing the interfacial tensions and can reduce the tensions of oil–water interface to ultra-low, even 10−6mNm−1 at very low surfactant concentration without alkali. The addition of salt, sodium chloride, results in more effectiveness of surfactant in reducing interfacial tension and shows that there exist obviously both synergism and antagonism between the surfactant and inorganic salt. All of the synthesized surfactants, except for hexyl methylnaphthalene sulfonate, can reduce the interfacial tension to ultra-low at an optimum surfactant concentration and salinity. Especially Tetradec-MNS surfactant is most efficient on lowering interfacial tension between oil and water without alkaline and the other additives at a 0.002 mass% of very low surfactant concentration. Both chromatogram separation of flooding and breakage of stratum are avoided effectively, in addition to the less expensive cost for enhanced oil recovery, and therefore it is a good candidate for enhanced oil recovery.
