Abstract:The authors observed a spectral burning hole and slowdown of light propagation by population oscillation technique in an Erbium-doped optical fiber. Measured bandwidth of the hole was about 55 Hz. Group velocity was 2.186×103m/s.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors demonstrated that the observation of ultra-slow group velocity and spectral holes by CPO in erbium-doped fiber at a room temperature. Operation of the reduction of light propagation at 1550 nm showed that the variable optical delay in fiber system could be applied to telecommunication system.

Abstract:We demonstrate that optical microfibers integrated in Yb-doped fiber lasers boost broadband noise-like pulse (NLP) generation via dispersion and nonlinearity management, with an optical spectrum spanning from below 1000 nm to beyond 1600 nm when the diameter of the optical microfiber is 1.2 µm. Numerical simulations show that dispersion and nonlinearity management provided by the optical microfiber is responsible for the broadband NLP generation. Furthermore, it is shown experimentally that dispersion and nonlinearity management via optical microfibers can also bring the highest optical rogue waves along with the broadest optical spectrum.

Abstract:In the absorption spectrum of the medium a burning hole appeared by coherent population oscillation, and the linewidth of this feature was approximately the inverse of the ground state population recovery time. Based on the theoretical analysis of gain the effect of absorption was different for different pump power. In a medium with absorption the oscillation leads to the pulse experiencing absorption saturation and propagation delay; in a medium with gain this effect induces the pulse experiencing gain saturation and propagation advance. Making use of coherent population oscillation we controlled the group velocity of light propagation in erbium-doped optical fiber. In experiment, the slowest group velocity was 2.857 x 10(3) m/s, and the corresponding group index was 10.5 x 10(4). According to coherent population oscillation and gain, we obtained the analytic expression of the group delay from rate equation and its simulation results were quantitatively coincident with our experimental data. The methods of controlling group velocity were comprehensively analyzed through the analytic model.

Abstract:Slow light propagation is observed in solid state material at room temperature. Here we report the investigation of the slowdown of light propagation resulting from steep change of refractive index by spectral hole technique in a ruby crystal at room temperature. Measured delay is about 3.452/spl plusmn/0.005 ms, corresponding to a group velocity as slow as 28.969/spl plusmn/0.042 m/s in a nonsinusoid modulated waveform.

Abstract:We report on slow light propagation induced by the coherent population oscillation in an erbium-doped optical fiber (EDOF). The slowdown of group velocity of light is demonstrated in a solid-state material at room temperature. We observe a maximum fractional delay of 0.129 and a maximum delay of 8.75ms corresponding to a group velocity as low as 228.57m/s in a sinusoid-like modulated waveform. We study in details the influences of the erbium ion density and the length of fiber on the fractional delay and the slow light propagation. The data show that the fractional delay can be increased using the fiber with high erbium ions density or long interaction length.

Abstract:We show that coherent population oscillations effect produces a very narrow spectral hole in the absorption spectrum. The large dispersion of the refractive index associated with this hole permits us to achieve a group velocity as low as 1496.25 m/s at room temperature in an erbium-doped fiber. When the input intensity is equal to the saturation intensity, the dispersion is optimal. The optimal dispersion corresponds to the maximum fractional delay. Therefore, the input intensity can be used as a control parameter to increase the fractional delay. Our theoretical results based on population oscillation agree very well with the experimental data. In addition, we confirm that the spectral hole experiences power broadening for optical fibers of different lengths.

Abstract:Group velocity of the optical pulse propagation would be reduced based on coherent population oscillation effect in an absorbing medium. According to the absorption properties of erbium-doped optical fiber, there would appear a sharp absorption loss, which brought more difficulties to the actual measurement of slow light and its application in communications. From the ground rate equation of erbium-ion, the delay of optical pulse was simulated under controllable absorption loss, and experiments were implemented to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, we researched how the different pump power and fiber length effect the signal loss and the optical pulse delay.

Abstract:We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation resulting from the steep change of the refractive index by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fibre. The largest delay is measured to be about 8.75ms corresponding to a group index of 1.312 × 106. The time delay or advancement depends on the pump intensity. Influences of the ion density on the fractional delay and the group velocity reduction of light propagation are studied. Based on our discussion the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity.

Abstract:We show that the simultaneous application of a copropagating saturating pump and a counterpropagating coherent beam can be used to burn a narrow spectral hole within the absorption line of the optical transition in a Doppler-broadened medium. The large index of refraction of this hole slows down a light pulse by a factor of about 10(4). In addition, we propose a method to create two-color slow light pulses with simultaneous gain by employing a bichromatic field to saturate the medium.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated the propagation of slow/fast light in erbium-doped fiber through gain cross modulation. We observed the ultraslow light with a group velocity of 6.1×10-3 c and the superluminal propagation with a negative group velocity of -5.1 ×10-4c.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the propagation of slow/fast light in an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) using mutually modulated cross-gain modulation. The group velocity of the light signal can be manipulated by the effect of gain cross-saturation modulation by a saturating light at an arbitrary wavelength in the gain bandwidth of the EDF. The ultraslow propagation with a small group velocity of 5.6 x 10(-3)c (c is the light speed in free space) and superluminal propagation with a negative group velocity of -1.1 x 10(-3)c has been observed under different modulation phases. Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:We demonstrated the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. In the scheme, the Stokes wave is circulated back into the ring cavity for Brillouin lasing to enhance the peak loss. The experiment demonstrated the superluminal light propagation can be realized by increasing the input signal power. The largest time advancement of 221.2ns has been observed. Correspondingly, the negative group velocity is -0.15c and the group index is -6.636.

Abstract:We report superluminal propagation in optical fibers using Brillouin lasing oscillation in a ring cavity. Negative group velocity propagation through a 10-m single mode fiber has been experimentally demonstrated. An advancement of 221.2 ns was observed before the input signal, which was achieved with a very high slope efficiency of 211: 3 ns/dB. This indicates that this way is suitable for long-distance low-loss superluminal propagation via optical fibers. Correspondingly, the group velocity is -0:151c and the group index is -6:636-the highest group velocity ever reported for optical fibers.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to demonstrate optically controllable pulse group velocity at telecommunication wavelengths in EDF due to CPO. First we reviewed recent advances in slow-light-based optical signal processing, then we study slow and fast light propagation in erbium doped fiber abstractly based on theory and simulation model. It is revealed though the research that the time delay and advancement depends greatly on the pump power, influence of the ion density on the group velocity of light propagation is also studied. Based on our discussion, the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity, which is of great importance to the communication industry.

Abstract:With the spectral hole-burning effect resulting from coherent population oscillation in the homogenously broadened material， the ultraslow light propagation phenomenon with the group velocity as slow as 27.55±0.05m/s at room temperature in a ruby crystal is observed. And the group velocity in ruby crystal depends on the amplitude modulation frequency, the power of laser beam and the orientation of the crystal lattice. Lower frequency or higher power leads to slower group velocity.

Abstract:A Fresnel mirror is introduced at a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber end by fusion splicing a short single-mode fiber segment, to reflect the light backward to an optical frequency domain reflectometry. The backward Fresnel reflection is used as a probe light to achieve light speed measurement with a high resolution and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, its group velocity is obtained with the round-trip time delay as well as the beat frequency at the reflection peak. Multiple Fresnel peaks are observed from 2180.00 Hz to 13,988.75 Hz, corresponding to fusion-spliced hollow-core fiber segments with different lengths from 0.2595 m to 1.6678 m, respectively. The speed of light in the air guidance is calculated at 2.9753 × 108 m/s, approaching that in vacuum, which is also in good agreement with 2.9672 × 108 m/s given by the numerical analysis with an uncertainty of 10−3. Our demonstration promises a key to hollow-core waveguide characterization for future wide-bandwidth and low-latency optical communication.
