Abstract:Modal inspection of optical fibers is important for multimode application but it is challenging to collect in-situ information of propagating modes for evaluation and manipulation. Here we demonstrate direct observation of multimode interference in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped micro/nanofibers. Luminescent interference patterns are visualized by visible up-conversion of Er3+ ions and are used for establishing the existence of higher order modes co-propagating with fundamental modes. We use fast Fourier transform to analyze the patterns in detail and obtain excellent agreement between experiment and calculation on beat lengths of the interference. Effective index differences among higher order modes and a fundamental mode of a microfiber are also experimentally investigated with the assistance of interference patterns, revealing the characteristic of modal dispersions.

Abstract:We report on slow light propagation induced by the coherent population oscillation in an erbium-doped optical fiber (EDOF). The slowdown of group velocity of light is demonstrated in a solid-state material at room temperature. We observe a maximum fractional delay of 0.129 and a maximum delay of 8.75ms corresponding to a group velocity as low as 228.57m/s in a sinusoid-like modulated waveform. We study in details the influences of the erbium ion density and the length of fiber on the fractional delay and the slow light propagation. The data show that the fractional delay can be increased using the fiber with high erbium ions density or long interaction length.

Abstract:A slow/fast light device with a sealed size of 130 mm×30 mm×3 mm has been demonstrated. Ultraslow propagation and superluminal propagation with group velocity values from 8.4 to -14.7 m/s are observed in a 3.86 cm long Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped single-mode phosphate glass fiber. The dependence of pump power, modulation frequency, and wavelength on the slow/fast light effect in this fiber is investigated in detail. These results suggest that this compact slow/fast device is more suitable for all-fiber applications than those made by traditional methods.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated the propagation of slow/fast light in erbium-doped fiber through gain cross modulation. We observed the ultraslow light with a group velocity of 6.1×10-3 c and the superluminal propagation with a negative group velocity of -5.1 ×10-4c.

Abstract:A recent communication [Opt. Commun. doi:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2010.06.076</a> (2010)] presents experimental results in which dark pulses are observed in a dispersion-managed (DM) net-anomalous dispersion fiber laser. Disagreement on the formation mechanism proposed in this communication, we would like to indicate a more accurate explanation in order to clarify some potential misunderstanding on dark pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Dynamic population gratings (DPGs) in rare-earth doped fibers are prevalent devices in fiber lasers for the production of single-longitudinal-mode emission, Q-switched pulses, and wavelength self-sweeping regimes. This study presents a transition from Q-switched state to continuous wave (CW) state, accompanying irregular mode-hopping, in an erbium-doped fiber laser with a heavily-doped DPG centered at 1549.95 nm. Our results demonstrate that the transition between these two states can be achieved by adjusting the pump power. The repetition frequency of the Q-switched pulse increases monotonically with the increasing pump power, while the pulse duration initially narrows and then expands because the reduced peak intensity weakens the nonlinear effect. Additionally, modulation peaks are evident on both the Q-switched pulse train and the CW background, which are induced by the irregular mode-hopping caused by the DPG. Furthermore, we observe that the central wavelength fluctuates within a range of 0.05 nm. These results provide valuable insight into the DPG effect in heavily-doped fibers.

Abstract:We observe both superluminal and slow light propagation simultaneously in a nested fiber ring resonator. The two outputs of the resonator exhibit different absorption characteristics that produce opposite dispersion performance. The transmission spectra of two outputs are demonstrated experimentally for a variety of coupler settings. In particular, the group delays of the resonator for various values of the coupling coefficients are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. We also discuss potential applications of the resonator.

Abstract:Based on the solution of the density matrix of motion equations we gave a theoretical simulation and experimental measurement of reduction of light propagation for a doped Er+ fiber by population oscillation. The effects of the concentration of doped Er ion density and fiber length were given in the paper. The measured data was agree with theoretical simulation well. Maximum delay is 10.75ms. The delay is tunable by changing modulation frequency and laser input power. The result showed the delay based on slow light in fiber can be proposed a novel optical delay line.

Abstract:Based on the general mechanism of the coherent population oscillations (CPO) in the Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) and Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), the group time delay of rectangle signal propagating in the active media is deduced. Compared with the sinusoidal signal, the time delay difference between the fundamental harmonics (FHFD: fundamental harmonic fractional delay) is first investigated in detail for the rectangle signal which is more popularly used in the digital signal systems. The plenty of simulations based on the propagation equations and some experiments for the sinusoidal and rectangle signals are used to analyze the differences and evaluate the slow and superluminal light effects. Furthermore, the time delay/advance always takes place accompanying with the signal distortion, which is evaluated by the total harmonic distortion (THD). The distortion caused by the SOA is smaller than that by the EDFA. A factor Q which is defined to evaluate the trade-off between the FHFD and the THD, shows that higher input power or higher optical gain is better for optical signal processing and optical telecommunications, and the SOA is more suitable for the higher modulation frequency (>10GHz).

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We show that coherent population oscillations effect produces a very narrow spectral hole in the absorption spectrum. The large dispersion of the refractive index associated with this hole permits us to achieve a group velocity as low as 1496.25 m/s at room temperature in an erbium-doped fiber. When the input intensity is equal to the saturation intensity, the dispersion is optimal. The optimal dispersion corresponds to the maximum fractional delay. Therefore, the input intensity can be used as a control parameter to increase the fractional delay. Our theoretical results based on population oscillation agree very well with the experimental data. In addition, we confirm that the spectral hole experiences power broadening for optical fibers of different lengths.

Abstract:In the absorption spectrum of the medium a burning hole appeared by coherent population oscillation, and the linewidth of this feature was approximately the inverse of the ground state population recovery time. Based on the theoretical analysis of gain the effect of absorption was different for different pump power. In a medium with absorption the oscillation leads to the pulse experiencing absorption saturation and propagation delay; in a medium with gain this effect induces the pulse experiencing gain saturation and propagation advance. Making use of coherent population oscillation we controlled the group velocity of light propagation in erbium-doped optical fiber. In experiment, the slowest group velocity was 2.857 x 10(3) m/s, and the corresponding group index was 10.5 x 10(4). According to coherent population oscillation and gain, we obtained the analytic expression of the group delay from rate equation and its simulation results were quantitatively coincident with our experimental data. The methods of controlling group velocity were comprehensively analyzed through the analytic model.

Abstract:The efficient generation of slow light in a singlemode Er-doped tellurite glass fibre, which has a Brillouin gain coefficient about an order of magnitude larger than silica fibre is reported. Pulses of 60 ns width were delayed by 67 ns in a 2 m length of fibre with a pump power of 630 mW. The large Brillouin gain and relatively low loss of tellurite fibre should be useful in the realisation of compact slow light devices operable at a lower pump power.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the propagation of slow/fast light in an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) using mutually modulated cross-gain modulation. The group velocity of the light signal can be manipulated by the effect of gain cross-saturation modulation by a saturating light at an arbitrary wavelength in the gain bandwidth of the EDF. The ultraslow propagation with a small group velocity of 5.6 x 10(-3)c (c is the light speed in free space) and superluminal propagation with a negative group velocity of -1.1 x 10(-3)c has been observed under different modulation phases. Abstract:We report the experimental observation of dispersion transition from abnormal dispersion (fast light) to normal dispersion (slow light) in a side-coupled ring resonator. We reveal that the transition from fast light to slow light can occur, when the tuned loss of the resonator results in the experience from the undercoupled regime to the overcoupled regime. Also, we experimentally fabricate the fiber side-coupled ring resonator, and measure the group delay of the resonator by coupling the resonator to a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The measured experimental results demonstrate the dispersion transition, and are in good agreement with the corresponding theoretical results. The side-coupled resonator with the tunable dispersion (group delay) can exploited for optical storage devices, slow light Fourier transform (FT) interferometric spectrometers, white light cavities (WLCs), optical switches, optical routers, and optical sensors.
Slow-Light Enhancement of Stimulated Emission of Atomic Systems in Photonic Crystals

Abstract:We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that slow light can enhance the stimulated emission of four-level atomic systems in photonic crystals. By applying the Bloch-Floquet formalism and the semiclassical physical model of harmonic oscillators coupled to electromagnetic fields, we develop a formalism that relates the group velocity of slow light to the conversion rate between the electric field and atomic potential energy. From our numerical study of the stimulated emission in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and nongrating fiber, a ninefold enhancement of stimulated emission is observed in a FBG over the nongrating fiber when pumping at the band edge, while a 20-fold enhancement of is observed when the frequency of the stimulated emission approaches the band edge.
