Abstract:Wearable ber-shaped supercapacitors (FSSs) have attracted increasing interests due to the combined advantages of small size, light weight and high exibility. However, the relatively low electrochemical performance of the FSSs has severely limited their practical applications. To this end, a lot of efforts are made to enhance their electrochemical properties by introducing new materials and optimizing device structures. Typically, electrochemically active metal oxides and conductive polymers are deposited into the ber electrode for high specic capacitances. For instance, a FSS based on bare carbon nanotube (CNT) bers exhibited an area specic capacitance of 1.97 mF cm .13 Aer incorporation of MnO2, Co3O4/NiO, polyaniline and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), the area specic capacitances are increased to e.g., 3.71, 52.6, 38 (ref. 24) and 73 mF cm ,25 respectively. The optimization of the ber electrode has been discovered as another general and promising method in enhancing the specic capacitance. Abstract:As an important branch of fiber-shaped energy storage devices, the fiber-shaped supercapacitor has been widely studied recently. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve fast electron transport and excellent ion accessibility in one single fiber electrode of the fibershaped supercapacitor. Herein, a novel family of amphiphilic core-sheath structured carbon nanotube composite fibers has been developed and applied to the fiber-shaped supercapacitor to address the above challenge. The polyaniline-modified hydrophilic sheath of the composite fiber electrode effectively enhanced the electrochemical property via advancing ion accessibility, while Au-deposited hydrophobic core demonstrated improved electrical conductivity by fast electron supply. On the basis of a synergistic effect, a remarkable specific capacitance of 324 F cm −3 at 0.5 A cm −3 and greatly enhanced rate performance were achieved, i.e., a 79% retention (256 F cm −3 ) at 50 A cm −3 . The obtained fiber-shaped supercapacitor finally displayed remarkable energy and power densities of 7.2 mW h cm −3 and 10 W cm −3 , respectively. The strategy developed herein also presents a general pathway towards novel fiber electrodes for high-performance wearable devices.

Abstract:Fiber-shaped supercapacitors with improved specific capacitance and high rate capability are a promising candidate as power supply for smart textiles. However, the synergistic interaction between conductive filaments and active nanomaterials remains a crucial challenge, especially when hydrothermal or electrochemical deposition is used to produce a core (fiber)-shell (active materials) fibrous structure. On the other hand, although 2D pseudocapacitive materials, e.g., Ti3C2Tx(MXene), have demonstrated high volumetric capacitance, high electrical conductivity, and hydrophilic characteristics, MXene-based electrodes normally suffer from poor rate capability owing to the sheet restacking especially when the loading level is high and solid-state gel is used as electrolyte. Herein, by hosting MXene nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx) in the corridor of a scrolled carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffold, a MXene/CNT fiber with helical structure is successfully fabricated. These features offer open spaces for rapid ion diffusion and guarantee fast electron transport. The solid-state supercapacitor based on such hybrid fibers with gel electrolyte coating exhibits a volumetric capacitance of 22.7 F cm(-3) at 0.1 A cm(-3) with capacitance retention of 84% at current density of 1.0 A cm(-3) (19.1 F cm(-3)), improved volumetric energy density of 2.55 mWh cm(-3) at the power density of 45.9 mW cm(-3), and excellent mechanical robustness.

Abstract:In this study, a composite graphene fiber was created using electrochemically exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) and chemically oxidized graphene oxide (GO) through a simple wet spinning process. The incorporation of EGO sheets in the fiber forms a highly conductive network, significantly enhancing its conductivity. The optimized EGO/GO fiber exhibits both high areal capacitance (532 mF cm −2 ) and volumetric capacitance (103 F cm −3 ). Moreover, the EGO/GO composite fiber demonstrates superior capacitance retention and increased fiber length compared to the GO fiber. A solid-state device was also constructed by the optimized EGO/GO fiber using PVA/H 2 SO 4 gel electrolyte which demonstrates excellent flexibility. And the as prepared solid-state fiber shaped supercapacitor demonstrates an areal capacitance of 246 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.69 mA cm −2 , while maintains 185 mF cm −2 at a current density of 34.7 mA cm −2 showcasing excellent rate performance.

Abstract:It is critical but remains challenging to make fiber-shaped energy storage systems to satisfy the rapidly developing area of flexible and wearable electronics due to the difficulty in finding high-performance fiber electrodes. Herein, we designed a one-step hydrothermal strategy to synthesize graphene/(molybdenum disulfide) hybrid fiber electrodes with a novel intercalated nanostructure that effectively combined the high electrical conductivity from graphene sheets and high pseudocapacitance from molybdenum disulfide sheets. The intercalated nanostructure also simultaneously provided large ionaccessible surface areas and a high active material content of up to 33.98 wt%. The resulting fiber-shaped supercapacitor exhibited a high specific capacitance of 368 F cm .

Abstract:Flexible redox supercapacitors based on treated carbon cloths were prepared by introducing methylene blue into a gel electrolyte. With the improvement in pseudocapacitance and broadening of the voltage window, the device exhibited a high capacitance of 1738mF cm(-2) and an energy density of 0.78 mW h cm(-2). In addition, 84.6% capacitance retention was achieved over 8000 cycles.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of supercapacitors is mainly determined by both the electrodes and electrolytes. By integration of the flexible electrodes with redox-mediated gel electrolytes, high performance solid state supercapacitors were designed in the present work. The flexible carbon cloth (CC)-based electrodes were prepared by covalent immobilization of tetraaniline (TA) onto the oxidized carbon cloth (OCC). Hydroquinone (HQ) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) were used as redox additive respectively to enhance the electrochemical property of the PVA-H2SO4 gel electrolyte. After optimization, high performance flexible solid-state symmetric supercapacitors (SSSCs) were obtained with specific capacitance of 834.0 mF/cm2, retention of 93.69% after 10,000 CV cycles and 108.5% after 500 cycles of 180°-bending, and energy density of 74.2 mWh/cm2 at power density of 405.3 mW/cm2. Such outstanding comprehensive performance makes them promising potential for practical application.

Abstract:Carbon supercapacitors with quasi-solid and flexible gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are of current interest due to their potential applicability as commercial power sources. In the recent development, improvement in specific energy of such devices is the main focus of research. Enhancement in interfacial redox-activity by adding appropriate redox-agent in electrolyte is found an excellent method to improve specific energy. In this report, a free-standing, non-aqueous, redox-active GPE is presented comprising an ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide added with additive KI, entrapped in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) for its application in quasi-solid-state-supercapacitors. The optimum composition of GPE shows flexible nature, excellent mechanical and thermal stabilities with high ionic conductivity (3.9 × 10−3 S cm-1 at room temperature) and wide electrochemical stability (∼5.05 V versus Ag). Carbon supercapacitor is fabricated with redox-active GPE and symmetrical electrodes of porous activated carbon (AC) derived from waste-biomass pollen-cone. The incorporation of KI in GPE instils fast redox-activity at the AC-electrode/GPE interfaces, hence, found responsible for substantial improvement in capacitance (from ∼115 to ∼250 F g − 1) and energy (from ∼31 to ∼65 Wh kg−1) at maximum power of 34–36 kW kg−1. The supercapacitor with redox-active GPE demonstrates reasonable self-discharge behavior and cycling performance with only ∼11% initial fading. The capacitor offers retention rate of ∼70% in specific capacitance and energy after ∼10,000 charge-discharge cycles.

Abstract:The flexible fiber-shaped electrodes that polypyrrole (PPy) and hydroquinone (HQ) derivatives coated on the surface of carbon fiber yarn (CFY) were synthesized by a simple one-step electrosynthesis. Besides, the effects of the size and structure of the HQ derivatives on the electrochemical performance of the doped electrodes were analyzed. The study suggested that sodium lignosulfonate doped () exhibited a high specific capacitance of 245.89 F cm−3 at 0.26 A cm−3. The all-solid-state flexible fiber-shaped supercapacitor (AFFSC) based on two parallel electrodes showed a high specific capacitance of 50.08 F cm−3 and an excellent energy density of 4.45 mW h cm−3. Moreover, the AFFSC achieved prominent cyclic stability, maintaining 92.7% capacitance retention after 25,000 cycles, as well as excellent flexibility and mechanical stability which kept 89% capacitance retention after 5000 bending cycles. In addition, the AFFSC also exhibited good voltage and current scalability and potentiality in its practical application.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers from electrospun polymer nanofibers have received considerable attention. However, most of the carbon nanofibers with a surface area above 1000 m2/g were reported to have a supercapacitor electrode capacitance far below 350 F g−1. Herein, we report a novel carbon nanofibrous material that has a supercapacitor electrode capacitance as high as 394 F g−1 (1.0 A g−1). We used a polymer blend of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and novolac (NOC) as materials, to electrospin them into precursor nanofibers and subsequently carbonize the nanofibers into carbon nanofibers. The carbon nanofibers prepared had a specific surface area as high as 1468 m2 g−1 with a meso-micro pores (average pore size 2.2 nm) predominated porous structure. The carbon nanofiber electrodes after 10,000 cycles of charging and discharging at 1.0 A g−1 maintained the capacitance almost unchanged. At the optimal condition, the supercapacitor device made of the electrodes had an energy density as high as 13.6 Wh∙kg−1 (at 0.5 kW kg−1). The high capacitance value comes from the carbon nanofibers with a large surface area and a unique porous structure. The high inter-fiber interconnection contributes to high capacitance. This super-high surface area carbon may be useful for the development of high-performance supercapacitors and other energy devices.

Abstract:Abstract With the continuous demands for wearable electronics, the embeddable power sources have drawn attention to develop advanced electrode materials and feasible manufacture procedures. Fiber‐based flexible energy storage devices have the potential to be practically integrated by utilizing the high‐performance materials with precisely constructed structures. Herein, a novel approach is presented to achieve an outstanding fiber‐based supercapacitor by simultaneous wet‐spinning of mesoporous MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanoflakes. The volumetric capacitance of the porous fiber is enhanced up to ≈145% when the content of mesoporous MXene reaches 15 wt%. The symmetric all‐solid‐state fiber supercapacitor shows an extraordinary capability of 821.5 F cm –3 at a current density of 0.5 A cm –3 , which reflects an enormous improvement to that of a nonporous MXene fiber‐based supercapacitor. The measured energy density is 8.9 mWh cm –3 at a power density of 401 mW cm –3 , which also indicates the effective synergy of the constructed pathways for ions and electrons. This work demonstrates the feasibility of scalable production of fiber‐based electrode materials with porous MXene for powering wearable applications.

Abstract:With the development of wearable electronics, fiber-based supercapacitors with both high energy and power densities are under growing demand. Herein we discovered a high performance fiber-based asymmetric supercapacitor (FAS) based on two carbon nanotube (CNT) composite fibers. MnO2 nanosheets were in situ grown on a CNT fiber to serve as the positive electrode, while polyimide was deposited onto another CNT fiber to form the negative electrode. The resulting aqueous FAS demonstrated broad operating voltage window (0–2.1 V), high areal energy density (36.4 μWh cm−2 at power density of 0.78 mW cm−2) and high power density (15.6 mW cm−2 at energy density of 30.2 μWh cm−2) with good rate performance, long cycling life and high flexibility.

Abstract:In the case of increasing shortage of non-renewable resources, developing high-efficiency and high-capacity energy storage devices is critical. Supercapacitors have the potential of high-efficiency and high-capacity. MXene and 1T-MoS 2 are two kinds of high performance pseudocapacitive materials. However, the stacking and aggregation of MXene nanosheets greatly reduce its capacity. The poor conductivity of 1T-MoS 2 also limits the full expression of its excellent pseudocapacitive performance. A flexible MXene/1T-MoS 2 composite paper electrode is designed and prepared in this work where the restacking of MXene can be relieved and the whole electrode maintains the conductivity. The interior stacking structure of MXene and 1T-MoS 2 in the composite paper, as well as the gel electrolyte type are explored. The device constructed with the electrode composed of randomly stacked MXene and 1T-MoS 2 (mass ratio 6:1) and acidic electrolyte (PVA/H 2 SO 4 gel electrolyte) demonstrates the optimal performance. The specific areal and volumetric capacitances reach 561.2 mF cm −2 and 1268.17 F cm −3 at the current density of 0.8 mA cm −2 respectively, outperforming most of the previously reported values for MXene based supercapacitors tested in gel electrolyte. The supercapacitor has excellent deformation durability and long cycle stability, demonstrating promising prospect in future flexible electronics.

Abstract:An electrochromic fiber-shaped super-capacitor is developed by winding aligned carbon nanotube/polyaniline composite sheets on an elastic fiber. The fiber-shaped supercapacitors demonstrate rapid and reversible chromatic transitions under different working states, which can be directly observed by the naked eye. They are also stretchable and flexible, and are woven into textiles to display designed signals in addition to storing energy.

Abstract:Architecture of fibrous building blocks with ordered structure and high electroactivity that enables quick charge kinetic transport/intercalation is necessary for high-energy-density electrochemical supercapacitors. Herein, we report a heterostructured molybdenum disulfide@vertically aligned graphene fiber (MoS2@VA-GF), wherein well-defined MoS2 nanosheets are decorated on vertical graphene fibers by C–O–Mo covalent bonds. Benefiting from uniform microfluidic self-assembly and confined reactions, it is realized that the unique characteristics of a vertical-aligned skeleton, large faradic activity, in situ interfacial connectivity and high-exposed surface/porosity remarkably create efficiently directional ionic pathways, interfacial electron mobility and pseudocapacitive accessibility for accelerating charge transport and intercalation/de-intercalation. Resultant MoS2@VA-GF exhibits large gravimetric capacitance (564 F g−1) and reversible redox transitions in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Furthermore, the MoS2@VA-GF-based solid-state supercapacitors deliver high energy density (45.57 Wh kg−1), good cycling stability (20,000 cycles) and deformable/temperature-tolerant capability. Beyond that, supercapacitors can realize actual applications of powering multicolored optical fiber lamps, wearable watch, electric fans and sunflower toys.

Abstract:Polymer gel electrolytes have been actively employed in exploiting solid-state supercapacitors. However, the access to tiny pores of electrode materials is hindered by the sticky nature and sluggish ion transport of polymers. Consequently, supercapacitors usually present much lower capacitance in gel electrolytes than in liquid elec-trolytes. Here, we develop a molten-salt-directed mesopore engineering to design carbon nanotubes that are highly accessible to gel electrolytes. The rich mesopores, 12-15 nm in diameter and cross-linked, drastically facilitate the infilling of gel electrolytes into carbon nanotubes, leading to robust capacitive performance. Such mesoporous carbon nanotubes exhibit a high capacitance of 195.2 F g-1 in polyvinyl alcohol electrolyte and an ion diffusion coefficient of 2.8 x 10-7 cm2 s- 1, close to that in liquid electrolyte. Additionally, solid-state supercapacitors based on mesoporous carbon nanotubes exhibit a short relaxation time of 39 ms and a capac-ity retention of 93% over 10000 cycles, thus demonstrating their great potential in practical applications.
