Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) can be deformed in response to an electric field. Combining many muscle-like attributes like mechanical compliance, a very fast response, large actuation strain, a high energy density, noiseless actuation, and light weight, DEs are considered to be leading materials for "artificial muscles". Herein, we report a new strategy to significantly improve the electromechanical performance of an elastomer by decreasing the chain entanglement density. A series of symmetric polystyrenepolyalkylacrylate-polystyrene triblock copolymers were synthesized using reversible additional fragmental transfer polymerization, where the chain entanglement density was varied by changing the bulkiness of the side groups of polyalkylacrylate. It is found that the voltage-induced maximum strain and energy density both quickly increase because the modulus is quickly decreased while the electric breakdown is little affected with an increase of the bulkiness of the alkyl side groups. The maximum actuation strain of polystyrene-poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate)-polystyrene (SEHAS, 25% at 28 kV mm(-1), without prestretch) and energy density (4.4 kJ m(-3)) are significantly higher than those of the state-of-the-art single component thermal plastic DEs. The actuation performance of SEHAS is comparable to that of the mammalian skeletal muscle. The other attractive attributes of SEHAS include thermal plasticity, relatively high tensile strength and a very low glass temperature (-68 degrees C) of the elastic phase.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are able to deform significantly in response under an external electric field. DE actuators have promising applications in many emerging fields such as biomimetic robots, haptic devices, tunable lens, and loudspeakers. Practical applications of DE devices are limited by the extremely high electric field and the high pre-stretch. Herein, we have designed and fabricated a new type of soft DE composites of partially reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/polystyrene-b-poly (n-butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene triblock copolymer (SBAS). An extremely soft SBAS was tailor-made as the elastic matrix. A facile colloidal blending method, i.e. simply mixing the SBAS latex with GO aqueous dispersion, was used to fabricate the nano-structured composite with a segregated network of RGO nano-sheets. The design strategy led to the DE composite film of 1.5 wt% RGO/SBAS owning low modulus (0.51 MPa), high relative permittivity (similar to 11) and relatively high dielectric breakdown strength (33 kV/mm). The DE composite film exhibited 21.3% maximum area actuation strain at relatively low electric field strength 33 kV/mm without pre-stretch. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Mechanisms of large actuation strain in dielectric elastomers

Abstract:Subject to a voltage, a dielectric elastomer (DE) deforms. Voltage-induced strains of above 100% have been observed when DEs are prestretched, and for DEs of certain network structures. Understanding mechanisms of large actuation strains is an active area of research. We propose that the voltage- stretch response of DEs may be modified by prestretch, or by using polymers with "short" chains. This modification results in suppression or elimination of electromechanical instability, leading to large actuation strains. We propose a method to select and design a DE, such that the actuation strain is maximized. The theoretical predictions agree well with existing experimental data. Abstract:Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are promising soft electromechanical transducers for soft robotics. Fabricating a high-performance DEA actuated by sub-kV voltage remains challenging. Here, a facile method not only to fabricate ultrathin dielectric elastomer films of triblock copolymers but also to enhance the dielectric breakdown strength and thus enhance the electromechanical performance is reported. A thick thermoplastic elastomer film of poly(styrene-b-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) from solution blading is symmetrically pre-stretched and relaxed at 120 degrees C to fabricate a freestanding ultrathin DE film. Compared with the pristine DE film of the same thickness (12 mu m), the thermally-relaxed DE film with equally biaxial pre-stretch ratio 3.5 x 3.5 exhibits increased electrical breakdown strength by a factor of 1.9 (from 43 to 82 V mu m(-1)), maximum actuation area strain by a factor of 1.9 (from 11.7% to 22.4%), and highest energy density by a factor of 5.7 (from 4.5 to 25.8 kJ m(-3)). The enhancement may be ascribed to the self-reinforcement of the dielectric breakdown strength due to the morphology change of polystyrene nanodomains from spheres to oblate spheroids. Thanks to the ultra-thinness, the high electromechanical performance is achieved within sub-kV driving voltage in all cases.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators have been shown to have promising applications as soft electromechanical transducers in many emerging technologies. The DE actuators, which are capable of large actuation strain over a wide range of excitation frequencies, are highly desirable. Here, the first single-component DE of a triblock copolymer with attractive electromechanical performance is reported. Symmetric poly(styrene-b-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) (SBAS) is designed and synthesized. The SBAS actuator exhibits about 100% static actuation area strain and excellent dynamic performance, as evidenced by a wide half bandwidth of 300 Hz and a very high specific power of 1.2 W g-1 within the excitation frequency range of 300-800 Hz.

Abstract:A dielectric elastomer can undergo a large deformation when it is subjected to an applied electric field. As a result, it finds potential usage in artificial muscles, soft robotics, and medical devices. However, current dielectric elastomers suffer from low dielectric constants (e.g., <4.5). Grafting highly dipolar groups onto a dielectric elastomer has been proved to be an efficient method to improve the dielectric constant and thus the electroactuation property. However, grafting a side chain bearing two or more dipolar groups onto the polymer main chain has not been explored in the past. In this work, we grafted cyanoester groups onto a poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) elastomer to improve its dielectric constant and actuation performance using the thiol-ene click reaction. A series of new dielectric elastomers with different grafting densities were obtained with excellent actuation properties: a dielectric constant up to 11.6 at 105 Hz and a large actuation strain of 9% at a low field of 13.9 MV/m. This work provides us a new and effective strategy to improve the performance of dielectric elastomers.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) featured with fast reversible and large deformation excited by an external electric field show promising applications as leading artificial muscle materials in many emerging technologies. It remains a great challenge to synthesize a DE simultaneously with high electromechanical performance (large actuation strain, high energy density, free of pre-stretch and bracing) and excellent mechanical properties (low Tg, low viscous loss, low modulus, and high mechanical strength). Herein, we propose and demonstrate that end-block-curing ABA triblock copolymer elastomer with well-designed structures is a new strategy to address the challenge by taking advantage of the microphase separation nature of the block copolymer. Particularly, poly (styrene-b-butyl acrylate-b-styrene) (SBAS) with post-curable end blocks, i.e. polystyrene (PS) blocks, are designed and synthesized. Different levels of cyclohex-3-enylmethyl acrylate (CEA) that contains two asymmetric vinyl groups with very different reactivity are incorporated into the end blocks for end-block curing while the molecular weight for each block is fixed. It is found that curing the end blocks enhances the strain-hardening effect during stretch and thus significantly increases the electro-mechanical performance. Without pre-stretch, the DE actuator of the end block cured SBAS exhibits a maximum actuation strain up to 72%, dielectric breakdown strength up to 154 kV mm(-1), and energy density up to 270 kJ/m(3), which are three, four, and almost fourty times that of the SBAS free of CEA, respectively. The maximum energy density is over 30 times that of mammalina skeletal muscle while the maximum actuation strain is 3.4 times. Interestingly, the improvement in eletromechanical performance is fulfilled with little increase in glass transition temperature (Tg), mild increase in modulus, and excellent tensile strength due to the microphase structures. The end-block-cured SBAS retains a low Tg of the rubbery phase around -35 degrees C, relatively low viscous loss of 0.2 at room temperature, a modulus lower than 1 MPa, and tensile strength around 3 MPa, which are attractive in terms of DE device applications.

Abstract:Bio-based polymer products derived from renewable agricultural and biomass feedstock have become increasingly important as these sustainable and eco-efficient products bring a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and saving of fossil energy in comparison with conventional pertrochemical-based materials. A series of bio-based elastomers from large-scale produced and petroleum independent monomers such as succinic acid, sebacic acid, itaconic acid, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, soybean oil, glycerol, citric acid, etc have been developed by authors. Same as conventional elastomers, bio-based elastomers possess low glass transition temperature, high elasticity and low strength, and this implies that they must be reinforced by nano-fillers. However, they also possess particular and novel properties due to their characteristic macromolecular structures and aggregation structure. For example, the existence of abundant ester groups, terminal carboxyl groups, and terminal hydroxyl groups in bio-based polyester elastomers endow polar fillers like silica disperse homogeneous in the elastomer matrix without surface modification. Even though, for incorporation of easily agglomerated fillers like graphene and layered silicates, elaborately dispersion and interfacial tailoring technique is necessary. Combined with specific structures and relevant effective composite technology, bio-based elastomer composites exhibit versatile potential applications in tire tread, PLA toughener, thermoplastic vulcanizates, and dielectric elastomer, etc.
Composite elastomers with on-demand convertible phase separations achieve large and healable electro-actuation

Abstract:Phase separation has been widely exploited for fabricating structured functional materials. Generally, after being fabricated, the phase structure in a hybrid material system has been set at a specific length scale and remains unchanged during the lifespan of the material. Herein, we report a strategy to construct on-demand and reversible phase switches among homogenous, nano- and macro-phase separation states in a composite elastomer during its lifespan. We trigger the nanophase separation by super-saturating an elastomer matrix with a carefully selected small-molecule organic compound (SMOC). The nanoparticles of SMOC that precipitate out upon quenching will stretch the elastomer network, yet remain stably arrested in the elastomer matrix at low temperatures for a long time. However, at elevated temperatures, the nano-phase separation will transform into the macro-one. The elastic recovery will drive the SMOC onto the elastomer surface. The phase-separated structures can be reconfigured through the homogeneous solution state at a further elevated temperature. Taking advantage of the reversible phase switches leads to a novel strategy for designing high-performance dielectric elastomers. The in situ formed nanoparticles can boost the electro-actuation performance by eliminating electro-mechanical instability and lead to a very large actuation strain (& SIM;146%). Once the actuator broke down, SMOC could on-demand be driven to the breakdown holes and heal the actuator.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers can perform fast and large in‐plane expansion/contraction due to electric field induced Maxwell stress. For robotic applications, it is often necessary that the in‐plane actuation is converted into out‐of‐plane motions with mechanical frames. Despite their performance appeal, their high driving electric field (20‐100 V/μm) demands bulky power accessories and severely compromises the durability. Here, we report a dielectric polymer that can be programmed into diverse motions actuated under a low electric field (2‐10 V/μm). The material is a crystalline dynamic covalent network that can be reconfigured into arbitrary 3D geometries. This gives rise to a geometric effect that markedly amplifies the actuation, leading to designable large motions when the dielectric polymer is heated above its melting temperature to become a dielectric elastomer. Additionally, the crystallization transition enables dynamic multi‐modal motions and active deployability. These attributes result in unique design versatility for soft robots. Abstract:Decorating the backbone of dielectric elastomers (DEs) with polar functionalities is an important practice that increases the total charge quantity of the chain segments, allowing DEs to have high dielectric permittivity (epsilon '). However, most established methods have struggled with optimizing the electromechanical performance of DEs, as the interactions among their polar functionalities have inevitably deteriorated the network flexibility of DEs. Herein, we present an innovative design concept for homogeneous DEs with superior dielectric properties by incorporating angle-containing monomers as building blocks that enable a flexible "zigzag" chain configuration in the DEs. This configuration, in turn, facilitates the charge separation within the chain segments. Therefore, a substantial increase of epsilon ' (similar to 90%) can be achieved while reducing the corresponding Young's modulus, enabling superior and dynamically stable actuation performance in DEs. These findings have the potential to break the longstanding trade-off between dielectric and mechanical performances of conventional DEs upon chemical decorations.
Achieving High Performance Electric Field Induced Strain: A Rational Design of Hyperbranched Aromatic Polyamide Functionalized Graphene-Polyurethane Dielectric Elastomer Composites

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers have great potentials as flexible actuators in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) due to their large deformation, light weight, mechanical compliancy, and low cost. The low dielectric constant of these elastomers requires a rather high voltage electric field, which has greatly limited their applications. In this work, a diaphragm-type flexible microactuator comprising a hyperbranched aromatic polyamide functionalized graphene (HAPFG) filler embedded into the polyurethane (PU) dielectric elastomer matrix is described. The rational designed HAPFG sheets exhibits uniform dispersion in PU matrix and strong adhesion with the matrix by hydrogen-bond coupling. Consequently, the HAPFG-PU composites possess high dielectric performance and low loss modulus. The effect of hyperbranched aromatic polyamide functionalized graphene on high voltage electric field induced strain was experimentally investigated using the Fotonic sensor. The high electric field response of the composite was discussed by applying different kinds of alternating-current field. In addition, a comparison of the breakdown strength between the HAPFG-PU composite and the pure PU was carried out.

Abstract:A new polyester dielectric elastomer aiming at large actuated strains driven by low electric fields was synthesized from five monomers through melt polycondensation. The polyester dielectric elastomer displays not only high dielectric constant but also low glass transition temperature. The effect of crosslink density on the elastic modulus, dielectric properties, and actuated strain of this elastomer was investigated. The sample with the lowest crosslink density showed high actuated strain (11.9%) at low electric field strength (just 15.6kV/mm) without any prestrain. Moreover, this elastomer presented good cell compatibility. This research might help to establish a new route for electroactive polymers.

Abstract:Adding ceramic or conductive fillers into polymers for increasing permittivity is a direct and effective approach to enhance the actuation strain of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). Unfortunately, the major dielectric loss caused by weak interfaces potentially harms the electromechanical stability and lifetime of DEAs. Here, we construct a desired macromolecular network with a long chain length and low cross-link density to reduce the elastic modulus of silicone elastomers. Selecting a high molecular weight of polymethylvinylsiloxane and a low dose of the crosslinker leads the soft but tough networks with rich entanglements, poor cross-links, and a low amount of defects. Then, a ductile material with low elastic modulus but high elongation at break is obtained. It accounts for much more excellent actuation strain of H-l in comparison to that of the other silicone elastomers. Importantly, without other fillers, the ultralow dielectric loss, conductivity, and firm networks possibly promote the electro-mechanical stability and lifetime for the DEA application. Abstract:Dielectric elastomer is a kind of electronic electroactive polymer, which plays an important role in the application of soft robots and flexible electronics. In this study, an all-organic polyaniline/copper phthalocyanine/silicone rubber (PANI/CuPc/PDMS) dielectric composite with superior comprehensive properties was prepared by manipulating the arrangement of filler in a polymer matrix assisted by electric fields. Both CuPc particles and PANI particles can form network structures in the PDMS matrix by self-assembly under electric fields, which can enhance the dielectric properties of the composites at low filler content. The dielectric constant of the assembled PANI/CuPc/PDMS composites can reach up to 140 at 100 Hz when the content of CuPc and PANI particles is 4 wt% and 2.5 wt%, respectively. Moreover, the elastic modulus of the composites remains below 2 MPa, which is important for electro-deforming. The strain of assembled PANI/CuPc/PDMS three-phase composites at low electric field strength (2 kV/mm) can increase up to five times the composites with randomly dispersed particles, which makes this composite have potential application in the field of soft robots and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Deformable dielectric is an elastic insulator, capable of large deformation when subject to a voltage load but suffering failures at instabilities such as pull-in, snap-through, or dielectric breakdown, etc. In this paper, we investigate the modes of polarization in different elastic dielectrics and the actuation modes when the material fails. The instability will be markedly modified and suppressed by the polarization with a transition of actuation mode for an attainable large deformation. We interpret the mechanisms of the stabilization with a conclusion on the material properties requested as a guidance of giant stable actuation, aiming to contribute to a high-performance dielectric elastomer. Abstract:This work reports the low-loss polyacrylate dielectric elastomer with outstanding actuation performance by employing a molecular engineering route. It is found that the difunctional macromolecular crosslinking agent we choose can not only effectively tune the dimensions of elastomer meshes and avoid uneven distribution of crosslinking points in elastomer matrix, accordingly eliminating the stress concentration and delaying the failure of elastomer, but also as “soft segments” and alleviate the strong dipole-dipole interaction between adjacent side groups of polyacrylate, which makes the dielectric elastomer with low elastic modulus and low mechanical loss. Simultaneously, a certain amount of uncrosslinked chains will remain in the free volume space of elastomer network, which would increase the dielectric constant of as-synthesized elastomers owing to their strong orientation ability. Therefore, the improvements in mechanical and dielectric properties of elastomer will contribute to the amelioration of actuation performance. We also design a home-made non-magnetic motor apparatus to verify the optimized actuation performance. This finding represents the first molecular engineering approach to improve the intrinsic actuation performance of dielectric elastomers, which are key materials of choice for flexible dielectric elastomer actuators.

Abstract:This study describes an easy and effective process for preparing a homogeneous polybutadiene (PB) dielectric elastomer with improved actuated strain by utilizing a photochemical thiol‐ene click reaction. The carboxyl groups and various ester groups are used to grafting on the PB. Since the length of the alkyl chains of the ester groups would significantly influence the polarities of the carbonyl groups and hydrogen bonding effect, we carefully discuss the influence of polarity and hydrogen bonding effect on the dielectric properties and mechanical properties of the modified polybutadienes. Very interestingly, we find that the increment of dielectric constant of PB modified by carboxyl groups is the lowest one compared to other modified PBs with the ester groups. Meanwhile, the modified PBs with the ester groups could achieve pretty low dielectric loss factor. And finally, a high dielectric constant (3.6), low dielectric loss factor (0.0005) and large actuated strain (∼25%) of the modified polybutadienes could be achieved by the modified PBs with butyl acrylate groups. This study provides a simple and effective method for the designing and synthesizing a homogeneous high electromechanical performance dielectric elastomer with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss.
