Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped BaY2F8 nanoparticles with upconversion luminescence behaviors were prepared via a hydrothermal synthesis method, followed by heated treatment at different temperatures in the range of 200℃ to 800℃. Influences of heat treatment temperature on the crystal structure, morphology, and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were investigated. Significant increases of the particle size and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were observed with increasing heat treatment temperature. Upconversion mechanism of the BaY2F8:Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles was also discussed.

Abstract:In this work, we show here that the up-conversion luminescence of NaNbO 3 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ nano-materials can be modulated by magnetic field and a enhancement of up-conversion intensities by a factor of about 2 for Er 3+ : 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 obtained at 30 T and about 5.4 for Er 3+ : 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 obtained at 20 T. The increased up-conversion luminescence are mainly interpreted in terms of the enhanced non-radiation transition from 4 I 11/2 to 4 I 13/2 of Er 3+ ions and the spin-orbital coupling (that is “mixing” effect) in crystal field by an external magnetic field. Meanwhile, we observed continuously spectra broadening with growing the magnetic field intensity, which is ascribed to the “mixing” effect induced by magnetic field and the difference of g factor of sub-bands. This bi-functional material with controllable optical-magnetic interactions has various potential applications, such as optical detection of magnetic field, etc .

Abstract:Nanocrystal clear: Optical-magnetic (OM) bifunctional NaGdF 4:Nd3+,Yb3+,Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized that consist of luminescent Er3+ ions and a coordinating magnetic Gd3+ ion. The luminescence of NaGdF 4:Nd3+,Yb3+,Er3+ nanocrystals was tuned by changing the applied magnetic field (see figure) both at room temperature and ultralow temperatures. Abstract:Upconversion, converting two or more photons into a higher energy photon, has attracted tremendous interest for the wide applications ranging from science to engineering, yet always suffered from the shortcoming of low efficiency. We propose and demonstrate an approach to improve the upconversion efficiency by multi-wavelength excitation in Er3+ doped NaYF4 nanoparticles. Compared to the sum of emission intensities excited by two single-wavelength (790nm and 1520nm) separately, the green and red emissions from NaYF4: 1%Er nanoparticles excited by two-wavelength simultaneously are enhanced by a factor of 3.05 and 1.53, respectively. Ground state absorption and excited state absorption are considered to be the microscopic mechanism of the observed phenomenon. Our conception of improving the upconversion luminescence with multi-wavelength excitation might be a potential solution for the efficient ulilization of near infrared light by solar cells.

Abstract:Lanthanide doped upconversion nanopartides reveal enormous potential for biomedical applications. However, they are limited by low upconversion efficiency. In this paper, we demonstrate tip-enhanced upconversion luminescence (UCL) from a single Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 nanoparticle with a maximum enhancement factor of 11 by the plasmonic effect, which is a solution for improving the conversion efficiency and will become a potential technique for the applications in sensitive imaging and detection via speeding up both the absorption and the emission processes of lanthanide doped upconversion nanopartides. By investigating the optical properties of the tip-enhanced UCL at 550 and 660 nm separately in Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 nanopartides, we observe that the gold-coated tip influences the upconversion process in Yb3+-Er3+-codoped NaYF4 particles by improving the reception and the transmission of incident electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:Monodispersed CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals have been prepared via a facile wet chemical technology. The upconversion luminescence properties of CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals were compared with those of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals with different phases and particle sizes. The results indicated that CaF2 is a promising host material for producing desirable upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of multiple trifluoroacetic acid salts. The SEM and TEM results show the size of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is about 100 nm in diagonal line, and the morphology of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is highly uniform with octahedral structure. Under the excitation of 980 nm, the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have higher upconversion luminescence efficiency compared with that of NaYF4:Yb, Er. The results indicate that the as-prepared LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles may have potential applications in bio-probes and displays.

Abstract:Improving upconversion luminescence efficiency of lanthanide-doped nanocrystals is always a hot topic for scientists because of its very important application in photonics, photovoltaics, biological imaging, security printing, and therapeutics. Two-color laser field has shown to be a well-established strategy to further improve the upconversion luminescence efficiency. Here, we first propose a two-color laser field combining the 850 and 980 nm lasers to improve the green and red upconversion luminescence efficiency in Er 3+ -doped NaYF 4 nanocrystals. In this work, an important advantage for our strategy is that the population is directly pumped to the radiation energy level of the upconversion luminescence by a cooperation excitation process, but not the spontaneous decay from other higher energy levels, and so the higher luminescence enhancement efficiency can be obtained. These studies also provide a clear physical picture for the physical control mechanism of the upconversion luminescence efficiency improvement, which can pave a way to properly design the laser fields in the future study of upconversion luminescence generation and control.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped upconversion luminescence is important for display and imaging field due to its narrow band, multicolor, long lifetime and high stability. However, low quantum yield of upconversion energy transfer, weak excited states absorption and slow spontaneous radiation rates lead to weak upconversion luminescence, which may dramatically limit the practical application of upconversion nanoparticles. Here, we report a metal-sheet-shaped plasmonic nanocavity consisting of gold and silver micro-sheets. It is found that the upconversion processes (including quantum yield of energy transfer, excited states absorption and spontaneous radiation rates) were enhanced by strong local electromagnetic field of the plasmonic nanocavity when RE3+ nanoparticles were filled in the plasmonic nanocavity. The significant enhancement of the luminescence and clear directional radiation were observed under 980 nm laser excitation. By adjusting the nanogap distance of the plasmonic nanocavity, we achieved a 75-fold enhancement in 654 nm emission. Benefiting from the plasmonic nanocavity, the upconversion luminescence exhibited a directional emission, which indicates the plasmonic near-field excitation contributed to the luminescence enhancement. These findings provide a candidate for ring light source and bio-imaging application.

Abstract:Er3+ single-doped and Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped NaY(WO4)(2) phosphors were synthesized at 1100 degrees C by a solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterized by XRD and emission spectral analysis, and the luminescence properties of the phosphors were studied using different excitation sources. The maximum emission intensity of the phosphor was achieved at 24 mol% of the Er3+ ion single-doped under 980 and 1550 nm excitation. The red emission of the phosphor was not changed by increasing Yb3+ ion concentrations, and the material exhibited excellent color purity and color stability. When excited by the 1550 nm laser, the fraction of red emission slightly increased compared with that observed under 980 nm excitation but the main bright green emission. The brightness of Yb3+, Er3+ co-doped NaY(WO4)(2) is about 4 times more intense than that of conventional Er3+ single-doped NaY(WO4)(2). The UCL mechanisms of the phosphor at 980 and 1550 nm are completely different. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence of NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped nanocrystals is investigated using a 3D plasmonic antenna architecture: a disk-coupled dots-on-pillar antenna array (D2PA). By tuning and optimizing the resonance frequency of the D2PA structure for upconversion luminescence, a 310-fold luminescence enhancement and an 8-fold reduction of the luminescence decay time are observed.

Abstract:Nanosized Yb(3+) and Er(3+) co-doped β-NaYF4 cores coated with multiple β-NaYF4 shell layers were synthesized by a solvothermal process. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of the materials. The visible and near-infrared spectra as well as the decay curves were also measured. A 40-fold intensity increase for the green upconversion and a 34-fold intensity increase for the red upconversion were observed as the cores are coated with three shell layers. The origin of the upconversion enhancement was studied on the basis of photoluminescence spectra and decay times. Our results indicate that the upconversion enhancement in the sandwiched structure mainly originates from the suppression of de-excitation of Yb(3+) ions. We also explored the population of the Er(3+4)F9/2 level. The results reveal that energy transfer from the lower intermediate Er(3+4)I13/2 level is dominant for populating the Er(3+4)F9/2 level when the nanocrystal size is relatively small; however, with increasing nanocrystal size, the contribution of the green emitting Er(3+4)S3/2 level for populating the Er(3+4)F9/2 level, which mainly comes from the cross relaxation energy transfer from Er(3+) ions to Yb(3+) ions followed by energy back transfer within the same Er(3+)-Yb(3+) pair, becomes more and more important. Moreover, this mechanism takes place only in the nearest Er(3+)-Yb(3+) pairs. This population route is in good agreement with that in nanomaterials and bulk materials.

Abstract:The Yb3+, Er3+ doped Y2O3 and Y2O2S upconversion nanophosphors were prepared by the direct complex precipitation method with the mixed solution of NH4HCO3 and NH3·H2O as the complex precipitant. The precipitate of ReOHxCO3y calcined at 900°C in air presents the pure Y2O3 with cubic structure, and the calculated crystalline size is about 26 nm, while the Y2O2S:Yb, Er nanocrystals were obtained by annealing the same precipitate at 900°C but in the atmosphere of N2 gas containing sulfur vapor. The obtained sample presents the pure hexagonal structure of Y2O2S with calculated crystalline size of 29 nm. According to the transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), the nanophosphors exhibit uniform quasispherical shape and size about 30 nm. By using the 980 nm excitation laser, the properties of upconversion luminescence and energy transfer processes were studied in detail for the different concentration of Yb3+ in Er3+ doped Y2O3 as well as the Yb3+, Er3+ codoped Y2O2S nanocrystals. The high-efficient red and yellow upconversion emissions were both observed by naked eyes in day time corresponding to the Y2O3:Yb, Er and Y2O2S:Yb, Er phosphors, respectively. Thus the upconversion nanoparticles combining its high efficient emission would pave the way for ideal fluorescence probes in biological applications.
