Abstract:We study the spontaneous Raman scattering (RS) in taper-drawn micro/nano-fibers (MNFs) by employing the photon counting technique. The spectra of RS in five MNFs, which are fabricated by using different heating flames (hydrogen flame or butane flame) and with different diameters, are measured within a frequency shift range of 1435 cm(-1)-3200 cm(-1). From the measured spectra, we observe the RS peaks originated from silica and a unique RS peak with a frequency shift of similar to 2905 cm(-1) (similar to 87.2 THz). Unlike the former ones, the latter one is not observable in conventional optical fibers. Furthermore, the unique peak becomes obvious and starts to rapidly increase with the decrease of the diameter of MNFs when the diameter is smaller than 2 mu m, and the intensity of the unique peak significantly depends on the heating flame used in the fabricating process. Our investigation is useful for the entanglement generation or optical sensing using taper-drawn MNFs.

Abstract:Modal inspection of optical fibers is important for multimode application but it is challenging to collect in-situ information of propagating modes for evaluation and manipulation. Here we demonstrate direct observation of multimode interference in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped micro/nanofibers. Luminescent interference patterns are visualized by visible up-conversion of Er3+ ions and are used for establishing the existence of higher order modes co-propagating with fundamental modes. We use fast Fourier transform to analyze the patterns in detail and obtain excellent agreement between experiment and calculation on beat lengths of the interference. Effective index differences among higher order modes and a fundamental mode of a microfiber are also experimentally investigated with the assistance of interference patterns, revealing the characteristic of modal dispersions.

Abstract:Nanofibres can be produced with diameters smaller than the wavelength of the light they guide. In this regime, the guided mode presents a strong evanescent field well adapted to the excitation of “evanescent nonlinearities”. We theoretically investigate such an evanescent nonlinearity: the Raman interaction between the evanescent field and a liquid surrounding the nanofibre. Our calculations demonstrate that the Raman conversion is obtained with nanofibre lengths an order of magnitude lower than those required for liquid core photonic crystal fibres.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Tapered nanofibers are fibers that are stretched until their diameter becomes comparable to the optical wavelength. As the length of such nanofibers can reach tens of centimeters, the guided mode that presents a strong evanescent field can be used to efficiently excite “evanescent nonlinearities” in the medium surrounding the nanofiber. This evanescent field was already used in many applications, for instance to probe the atomic fluorescence of gases, and also for spectroscopic measurements. However, to our knowledge, this field has never been used to perform optical nonlinearities, the so-called “evanescent nonlinearities”, except in two very recent communications . In this work, we present the demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in ethanol. The nanofiber was drawn from a telecom fiber with a home-made pulling platform. The targeted diameter and length are respectively 440 nm and 6 cm. The pump source was a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser emitting pulses at 532 nm whose full width at half maximum is 510 ps. We observed the first Stokes of ethanol at 630 nm (see fig. below). The conversion efficiency is about 40 % for an input pump energy of 0.24 μJ. This first experimental demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in a liquid opens the way to the study of a new kind of experiments and components, thanks to the various materials that can form or surround the nanofiber and the feasibility of nanosystems such as nanoloops or nanoresonators.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:Based on Rayleigh–Gans scattering theory of spherical particles and evanescent-wave guiding properties of nanofibers, we calculate the scattered power of nanoparticles in the vicinity of typical waveguiding nanofibers. It shows that, by optimizing the wavelength of the probing light and the diameter of the nanofiber, nanoparticle-induced scattering intensity can reach detectable level with possibilities for single-molecule detection. Results presented in this work suggest a simple approach to high-sensitivity nanofiber optical sensing of nanoparticles in aqueous solutions.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of the textile fibers Raman spectra, a qualitative identification method based on Raman feature extraction is proposed. This fast method consists of spectrum measurement and spectral data processing algorithm, including spectrum preprocessing, feature extraction and matching recognition. It can be used to identify the components of fibers or fabrics, especially chemical fibers, which is an inspective difficulty in daily analytic work for its remarkable Raman feature. The authors performed an experiment to analyze 4 typical and widely used kinds of fibers as algorithm verification. They are terylene fiber, acrylic fiber, nylon fiber and rayon fiber. To identify the components of one test sample, first the authors set up feature tables of these 4 standard samples, which describe the features of their preprocessed spectra containing both position information and intensity information, then extract features of the test sample. The authors match these features with the tables and calculate the matching confidence coefficients of the results, which can be used to filter the unexpected matching results caused by accident and attain the final qualitative identification result. The experimental results confirm that this method is effective, efficient and expansible, which means it can be used to identify more actual fiber types by adding more standard spectra to the feature table database. In addition, it is a pure optical method, which needs only a small quantity of sample without any pretreatment. The whole identification process is damage-free, pollution-free and suitable for various kinds of fabrics. Compared to all existing methods, this Raman spectrum identification method can solve the limitation of efficiency, pollution, universality, and fill a gap in fabric inspection field.
Parallel Fabrication of Silica Optical Microfibers and Nanofibers

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel technique of Raman-atomic force microscopy (AFM) combining micro region Raman spectroscopy and AFM imaging. An in-situ probe unit which can simultaneously realize the detection of Raman spectrum and the measurement of AFM image was designed, and a related Raman-AFM system was constructed. Using this system, some experiments were carried out to acquire micro region Raman spectra and AFM images of ZnO nano-particle and TiO2 film. The results show that the Raman spectra of both samples are in agreement with theoretical vaues, and the AFM images represent their micro/nano-structures quite well. These researches prove the feasibility of the Raman-AFM technique which has the potential of being widely applied in the fields of Raman spectroscopy and micro/nano-technology.

Abstract:Single-nanoparticle detection and sizing is demonstrated using a nanofiber pair in an aqueous environment. The sizing of nanoparticles with a single radius (100 nm) and of mixed nanoparticles with different radii (100 nm and 170 nm) are both realized, and the experimental results agree well with predictions of Rayleigh-Gans scattering, by taking the inhomogeneous field distribution of the nanofibers into account.

Abstract:Owing to their favorable properties including small sizes, tight optical confinement, large fractional evanescent fields, and low waveguiding losses, optical micro-/nanofibers have attracted broad research interest and technological applications in recent years, in which the precision in micro-/nanofiber fabrication is critical to determine their waveguiding properties and performances. Here, we firstly introduce the principles of high-temperature taper drawing of glass fibers. Next, we review typical fabrication methods including flame-heated manual drawing approach, flame-heated mechanical drawing technique, electric-heated mechanical drawing technique and laser-heated mechanical drawing technique. Cons and pros of the above-mentioned techniques are discussed, followed by a brief introduction to the fabrication of polymer micro-/nanofibers. Thirdly, we introduce the principle and techniques of high-precision diameter control in glass micro-/nanofiber fabrication based on a in-situ feedback from the cutoff of high-order waveguiding modes, which can offer a diameter precision down to nanometer level. In addition, several techniques for diameter measurement of a micro-/nanofiber are also introduced. Finally, we end the review with a brief summary in micro-/ nanofiber fabrication, as well as an outlook to future possibilities.

Abstract:The evaluation of mechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers is inherently difficult. On p. 603, Sishen Xie and co-workers report that Raman scattering—a generic methodology independent of mechanical measurements—can be used to determine the interbundle strength and microscopic failure process for various CNT macroarchitectures. Raman data are used to predict the moduli of CNT films and fibers, and to illustrate the influences of the twisting geometries on the fibers' mechanical performances.

Abstract:We present a direct experimental investigation of the optical field distribution around a suspended tapered optical nanofiber by means of a fluorescent scanning probe. Using a 100 nm diameter fluorescent bead as a probe of the field intensity, we study interferences made by a nanofiber (400 nm diameter) scattering a plane wave (568 nm wavelength). Our scanning fluorescence near-field microscope maps the optical field over 36 μm<sup>2</sup>, with λ/5 resolution, from contact with the surface of the nanofiber to a few micrometers away. Comparison between experiments and Mie scattering theory allows us to precisely determine the emitter-nanofiber distance and experimental drifts.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy is now an extremely important technique for the analysis of carbon-based materials. It is demonstrated how it can be used to give a unique insight into characterising many aspects of the microstructure of these materials, including orientation, number of layers, defects and doping, enabling standardisation and quality control. Graphene, as the building block of all sp 2 carbon materials is used as the main example and it is demonstrated how the understanding of this material has facilitated the analysis of carbon nanotubes and fibres. It is also shown that the Raman bands shift during deformation and that these shifts are related through a universal calibration. It is demonstrated how these stress-induced Raman band shifts can be used to follow the deformation of the carbon-based materials and that this can be employed for the study of the interfacial micromechanics in model composite specimens. Finally the application of Raman spectroscopy to the characterisation of the structure and physical properties, both mechanical and thermal, of bulk carbon-based composites is described in detail. The application of Raman spectroscopy to the study of a broader range of materials and the potential for instrumental innovations to enable further extension of the technique are discussed briefly.

Abstract:We systematically investigated the intrinsic mechanical flexural modes of tapered optical fibers (TOFs) with a high aspect ratio up to 3×104 . Based on the near-field scattering of the hemispherical microfiber tip to the vibrating TOF evanescent field, we detected more than 320 ordered intrinsic mechanical modes through the TOF transmission spectra which was enhanced by 72 dB compared to without near-field scattering. The trend of the vibration amplitude with the mode order was similar to pendulum waves. Our results open a pathway to study the mechanical modes of photonic microstructures-nanostructures that are expected to be used in waveguide QED, cavity optomechanical, and optical sensing. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.033801 © 2024 American Physical Society

Rayleigh scattering in an optical nanofiber as a probe of higher-order mode propagation

Abstract:Optical nanofibers provide a rich platform for exploring atomic and optical phenomena even when they support only a single spatial mode. Nanofibers supporting higher-order modes provide additional degrees of freedom to enable complex evanescent field profiles for interaction with the surrounding medium, but local control of these profiles requires nondestructive evaluation of the propagating fields. Here, we use Rayleigh scattering for rapid measurement of the propagation of light in few-mode optical nanofibers. Imaging the Rayleigh scattered light provides direct visualization of the spatial evolution of propagating fields throughout the entire fiber, including the transition from core-cladding guidance to cladding-air guidance. We resolve the interference between higher-order modes to determine local beat lengths and modal content along the fiber, and show that the modal superposition in the waist can be systematically controlled by adjusting the input superposition. With this diagnostic we can measure variations in the radius of the fiber waist to below 3 nm in situ using purely optical means. This nondestructive technique also provides useful insight into light propagation in optical nanofibers.
