Abstract:The mechanical performance of nanomaterial-reinforced polymer nanocomposites is a prerequisite for their engineering implementations, which is largely determined by the interfacial load transfer efficiency. This work investigates the role of the nanofillers via molecular dynamics simulations under different deformation scenarios, mimicking a maximum and minimum load transfer scenario from the polymer matrix. On the basis of the polyethylene (PE) nanocomposite reinforced by a new nanofiller–carbon nanothread (NTH), we find that the loading conditions dominantly determine its enhancement effect on the mechanical properties of the PE nanocomposite. Under tensile deformation, the ultimate tensile strength of the PE nanocomposite receives around 61 to 211% increment when the filler deforms simultaneously with the PE matrix. However, such enhancement is largely suppressed when the NTH is deforming nonsimultaneously. Similar results are observed from the compressive deformation. Specifically, both morphology and functionalization are found to alter the enhancement effect from the NTH fillers, while also relying on the loading directions. Overall, this work provides an in-depth understanding of the role of the nanofiller. The observations signify the importance of establishing effective load transfer at the interface, which could benefit the design and fabrication of high-performance polymer nanocomposites.
Enhanced Sound Insulation and Mechanical Properties Based on Inorganic Fillers/thermoplastic Elastomer Composites

Abstract:In this work, a series of the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) composites filled with micro CaCO3 and hollow glass microspheres (HGM) via alloying process were investigated. The plastic phase of TPE composite referred to polypropylene (PP) and the rubber phase was chosen by styrene butadiene styrene (SBS). SEM observation conformed that the inorganic particles were mainly dispersed in continuous PP phase and SBS phase remained in an isolated structure. The sound insulation property was measured by a four-microphone impedance tube. Compared to pure polymer sample, both CaCO3 and HGM-filled TPE composites exhibited greatly enhanced soundproof efficiency, which increased the sound transmission loss value from original 29 dB to 45 dB. The soundproof mechanism was investigated in detail. The damping of acoustic energy was contributed by the extended difference between the stiffness and acoustic impedance between plastic phase and rubber phase. The dispersion and property of inorganic fillers were considered as key factors to increase the dissipation of sound wave. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of TPE composites were enhanced due to the addition of inorganic fillers.

Abstract:Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a kind of dielectric elastomer (DE) which can behave as an actuator, altering thickness strain in response to electrical stimulation. The composites are made up of fillers with a very high dielectric constant that are spread in a polymer matrix. It is very difficult to obtain large deformation at low voltage. In this study, we made two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets with excellent conductivity and one-dimensional (1D) polydopamine (PDA)-modified CNT fiber fillers. After that, TPU dielectric elastomer films made of MXene/CNTs or MXene/CNTs@PDA were prepared. The results showed that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of TPU dielectric film including MXene/CNTs were much higher than that containing MXene/CNTs@PDA, although Young's modulus and breakdown strength (Eb) were significantly lower. At the same time, these two types of dielectric films had a significantly higher dielectric constant and dielectric loss than pure TPU dielectric film, and their breakdown strength was significantly lower. The compatibility of CNTs@PDA fibers with the TPU matrix improves after PDA modification, and the dispersion of CNTs@PDA fibers improves, resulting in an increase in Young's modulus. MXene with a two-dimensional nanosheet structure increases the breakdown strength of the TPU dielectric elastomer under the condition of the addition of a tiny quantity. To summarize, the dielectric constant, dielectric loss, Young's modulus, and dielectric elastomer breakdown strength are mutually restrictive conditions, and the relationship between all parties must be balanced to obtain obvious deformation properties.

Abstract:To achieve high deformation under a low electric field intensity is still a big challenge for the dielectric elastomers (DE) potentially used in artificial electronic skin and artificial muscles. Herein, poly-dopamine (PDA) modified 1D barium titanate (BT@PDA) nanofibers and 2D MXene nanosheets with high aspect ratio and large dipole moment were fabricated, and introduced into TPU elastomers. Results showed that the interfacial polarization and micro-capacitor structure formed by MXene sheets lead to the high dielectric constant, and high dielectric loss of MXene/TPU composites with low modulus. The interfacial polarization caused by BT@PDA nanofibers resulting in high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss of BT@PDA/TPU composites with high modulus. Combing the advantages of the two fillers, the MXene/BT@PDA/TPU composites showed high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, low modulus. The electrical sensitivity factor of 0.5 wt% MXene/5 wt% BT@PDA/TPU composite (11.38) was much higher than the sum of that of 0.5 wt% MXene/TPU (1.73) and 5 wt% BT@PDA/TPU (4.35) composites at a low filler content, showing the 0.5 wt% MXene/5 wt% BT@PDA/TPU dielectric composite had a large deformation under a low electric field. This work can provide an effect strategy to design DE nanocomposites with good deformation performance.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were non-covalently modified by two categories of ionic liquids (ILs), including 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazole bromide (VEIMBr) and 1-vinyl-3-hexylimidazole bromide (VHIMBr) in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:4, respectively. The surface interaction between CNTs and ILs was well-characterized by FTIR, Raman spectra, XPS, etc. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing different amounts of CNTs/ILs was fabricated by melting blending method. TPU-CNTs/ILs composites exhibited simultaneously enhanced electromechanical properties with improved dielectric constant and lowered elastic modulus. The electromechanical sensitivity of sample TPU-3CNT/12VHIMBr increased by approximately 45 times in comparison with that of pure TPU at 200 Hz. Besides, improved dispersion of CNTs/ILs in the TPU matrix was also exhibited.

Abstract:The typical nano-carbon materials, 1D fiber-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D platelet-like graphene nanosheets (GRNs), that have attracted tremendous attention in the field of polymer nanocomposites due to their unprecedented properties, are used as conducting filler to induce a considerable improvement in the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the resulting graphene/polymer nanocomposites at very low loading contents. This study deals with the preparation and electro-stimulus response properties of polyurethane (PU) dielectric elastomer films with such 1D and 2D nanocarbon fillers embedded in the polymer matrix. The various forms of carbon used in composite preparation include CNT, GRN and CNT-GRN hybrid fillers. Results indicate that the dielectric, mechanical and electromechanical properties depend on the carbon filler type and the carbon filler weight fraction. Here, it has been also established that embedding CNT-GRN hybrid fillers into pristine polyurethane endows somewhat better dispersion of CNTs and GRNs as well as better interfacial adhesion between the carbon fillers and matrix, which results in an improvement in electric-induced strain. Therefore, the nanocomposites seem to be very attractive for microelectromechanical systems applications.

Abstract:Heat dissipating and energy storing TPU/BNT‐CNT composites. The development of innovative composite materials through the amalgamation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) and carbon nanotube (CNT) fillers was investigated. Before the composite fabrication, the fillers' surfaces were treated to enhance their compatibility with the TPU matrix. Hybrid fillers of BNT and CNTs were fabricated by mixing the two types of filler particles through ball milling and subsequently annealing the mixture at 250°C. Melt‐blending and injection molding were utilized to synthesize the composites at 210°C processing temperature. The prepared composites showed significantly enhanced thermal conductivity, dielectric constant, thermal stability, and thermomechanical properties compared with the neat TPU matrix. For instance, the dielectric constant was enhanced by 340% upon the inclusion of 40 wt.% BNT and CNT fillers compared to the neat TPU matrix (40CBNT‐TPU has 13.2). In particular, the inclusion of BNT‐CNT particles in the TPU matrix improved the thermal conductivity of the TPU matrix by 1180% tremendously as compared to neat TPU (40CBNT‐TPU has 2.6 W/(m.K)). Highlights Crystalline bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) is fabricated. Degradation of 8 wt.% of the IPDI‐treated BNT proves surface treatment. Dielectric constant (DC) improved by 340% compared to neat TPU. Thermal conductivity (TC) enhanced 11.4 times compared to neat TPU. Improvement in TC and DC will make it applicable in electronic materials.

Abstract:We used a novel and simple approach to increase the actuated strain at low electric field of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) through the disruption of the hydrogen bonds of TPU by adding diaminonaphthalene (DAN) into the matrix. DAN as proton donors disrupted the original N–H/C=O hydrogen bonds between the TPU chains, improving the polarizability of the chains, thus increasing the dielectric constant of TPU. Meanwhile, DAN greatly decreased the elastic modulus of TPU by disrupting the hydrogen bonds of TPU. The simultaneous increase in dielectric constant and decrease in elastic modulus resulted in a 330% increase in electromechanical sensitivity at 103 Hz and a 500% increase in actuated strain at the low electric field of 20 V μm−1, facilitating the application of dielectric elastomers (DEs) in the biological and medical fields, where a low electric field is required. In addition, our DAN/TPU DE exhibited good mechanical strength.

Abstract:Insulating interlayer between nanoparticles and polymer matrix is crucial for suppressing the dielectric loss of polymer composites. In this study, titanium carbide (TiC) particles were surface modified by polydopamine (PDA), and the obtained PDA@TiC powders were used to reinforce thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The results indicate that the PDA@TiC were homogenously dispersed in the matrix compared with the pristine TiC, and that the PDA@TiC/TPU composites show improved dielectric and mechanical properties, i.e., much lower dissipation factors and obviously enhanced dielectric breakdown strength, as well as higher tensile strength and elongation at break as compared to the raw TiC/TPU. The nanoscale PDA interlayer contributes to the dielectric and mechanical enhancements because it not only serves as an insulating shell that prevents TiC particles from direct contacting and suppresses the loss and leakage current to very low levels, but also enhances the interfacial interactions thereby leading to improved mechanical strength and toughness. The prepared flexible PDA@TiC/TPU with high permittivity but low loss will find potential applications in electronic and electrical applications.

Improved dielectric and actuated performance of thermoplastic polyurethane by blending with XNBR as macromolecular dielectrics

Abstract:In the present study, carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) with high dielectric constant (εr) and low elastic modulus (Y) was introduced into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with good mechanical properties to prepare macroscopic homogeneous high performance dielectric elastomer (DE) blends. The results show that the XNBR macromolecules can disrupt the N-H/C=O hydrogen bonds of TPU, leading to the increase in dipole polarizability of TPU matrix. On the other hand, the formation of hydrogen bonds between XNBR and TPU increases the interfacial interaction and thus the interfacial polarizability of XNBR/TPU blends. The improvement of both the dipole polarizability and the interfacial polarizability result in the significant improvement of εr of TPU with increasing the content of XNBR. Meanwhile, the Y of TPU is decreased due to the disruption of hydrogen bonds of TPU and the softening effect of XNBR. The simultaneous increase in εr and decrease in Y of TPU results in the large increase in electromechanical sensitivity (β) and actuated strain at low electric field of XNBR/TPU blends. Interestingly, the εr at 103 Hz, the β and the actuated strain at certain electrical field of the blend with XNBR/TPU blending ratio of 80/20 is even higher than that of pure XNBR, which is attributed to the co-continuous structure of this blend as well as the synergetic effect of the increase in dipole polarizability of both TPU and XNBR and the increase in interfacial polarizability. Comparing with our previous study on TPU DE blend by adding low molecular weight plasticizer, XNBR/TPU macromolecular DE blend show better overall performance such as higher mechanical strength, higher breakdown strength and better stability, thus are more likely to be applied in biological and medical fields, where a low electric field is required.

Abstract:Nanosized particles have a large surface area to facilitate interfacial contact and thus are promising fillers for polymers. However, poor dispersion of nanoparticles limits the reinforcement effect. Herein, by rationally tailoring the internal porous structures, specific surface area, and surface chemistry, we prepared porous carbon fiber (PCF) filler from poly(acrylonitrile-block-methyl methacrylate) (PAN-b-PMMA) block copolymers. PCF had a three-dimensional porous network and provided improved filler-matrix interactions. Owing to the enhanced filler-matrix interlocking, large interfacial contact area, and strong interfacial affinity induced by nitrogen and oxygen doping, PCF was uniformly dispersed in rubber. Uncured nature rubber composites containing 5 parts of PCF per hundred parts of rubber (phr) showed 4.3 times higher Young's modulus and twice the tensile strength at 300% strain compared to the neat rubber. PCF represents an effective reinforcing filler for polymers.
Melt blending and characterization of carbon nanoparticles-filled thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers

Abstract:In this work, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers reinforced with carbon nanosized particles were produced by a special melt blending technique. A TPU was melt blended with high-structured carbon black and carbon nanofibres (1 wt%). A miniature asymmetric batch mixer, which applies high shear levels to the melt, ensured good particles dispersion. The TPU material systems were then thoroughly characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile mechanical testing, electrical resistance measurements and flammability tests. The different nanofillers exhibited different influences on the TPU properties, these materials featuring interesting and improved multifunctional behaviours, with high propensity for large deformation sensors applications.

Abstract:This study deals with the preparation and dielectric properties of polyurethane (PU) elastomer films by nano carbon fillers incorporation in the PU polymer matrix. The various forms of carbon used in composite preparation include mainly amorphous nanocarbon powder (ANC), resol-derived ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and poly (methyl methacrylate) -functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PMMA-RGO). Firstly, resol-derived ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with a 2D hexagonal mesoporous carbon framework is used as conducting filler to achieve homogeneous dispersion and favorable interfacial interactions in the polymer matrix. Secondly, graphene, which have attracted tremendous attention in the field of polymer nanocomposites due to their unprecedented properties, is used as conducting filler to induce a considerable improvement in the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the resulting graphene/polymer nanocomposites at very low loading contents. Thirdly, in order to fully harness the exceptional properties of graphene nanosheets in the polymer nanocomposites, poly (methyl methacrylate) -functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PMMA-RGO) is synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and used as conducting filler to achieve uniform graphene nanosheets dispersion in the polymer matrix. Results indicate that the dielectric properties depend on the carbon filler type, the applied field frequency and the carbon filler weight fraction.

Abstract:Novel carboxylic poly(arylene ether nitrile)s (CPEN) functionalized carbon nanotubes (CPEN-f-CNTs) were successfully prepared by a simple and effective solvent-thermal route. The CPEN-f-CNTs were subsequently used as the novel filler for preparation of high performance poly(arylene ether nitrile) s (PEN) nanocomposites. The SEM characterization of the PEN nanocomposites revealed that the CPEN-f-CNTs present better dispersion and interfacial compatibility in the PEN matrix, which was confirmed by the linear rheological analysis (Cole-Cole plots) as well. Consequently, the improved thermal stability (increased initial and maximum decomposition temperature) and enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength and modulus) were obtained from nanocomposites using CPEN-f-CNTs. More importantly, the PEN/CPEN-f-CNTs nanocomposites not only show a high dielectric constant but also have low dielectric loss. For example, a dielectric constant of 39.7 and a dielectric loss of 0.076 were observed in the PEN composite with 5 wt% CPEN-f-CNTs loading at 100 Hz. Therefore, the flexible PEN/CPEN-f-CNTs nanocomposites with outstanding mechanical, thermal and dielectric properties will find wide application in the high energy density capacitors. Abstract:Abstract The paradox of obtaining dielectric elastomers (DEs) with both low modulus and high‐dielectric properties has long been puzzling researchers in this field. To solve this problem, a preliminary attempt is made here by solution compounding polyphenol nanoparticles modified multiwalled carbon nanotube (PNs@MWCNT) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain PDMS based DEs with excellent electromechanical properties. The PNs layer can improve the interfacial interaction between MWCNT and PDMS probably through interfacial hydrogen bonding, thus improving the dispersion of PNs@MWCNT in PDMS. Compared with pure MWCNT filled PDMS nanocomposites, despite the hardening effect brought by the filler network, a softening effect (i.e., decreased cross‐linking) by the finer filler‐dispersion enhances in PNs@MWCNT/PDMS, resulting in lower moduli. Meanwhile, the as‐prepared PNs@MWCNT/PDMS composites exhibit high permittivity, low‐dielectric loss and high‐breakdown strength. Finally, the PNs@MWCNT/PDMS nanocomposites show excellent electromechanical properties with a largest actuated strain of 7.4% at a breakdown strength of 13.1 kV/mm, which is 2.2 times that (3.3%@13.3 kV/mm) of MWCNT/PDMS and 3.9 times that (1.9%@18.8 kV/mm) of neat PDMS.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) as the high-dielectric-constant filler and a nontoxic, renewable, and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) as the plasticizer were introduced into a hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR) matrix to form a dielectric elastomer (DE) with high actuated strain at a low electric field. The results showed that the actuated strain increased from 5.8% for pure HNBR to 13.6% for the 30 wt % ESO/(10 wt% TiO2/HNBR) composite. The increase in actuated strain was due to the increased dielectric constant by the addition of TiO2 and the weakened HNBR molecular interaction with the presence of ESO. In addition, the actuated strain of the 30 wt% ESO/(40 wt% TiO2/HNBR) composite increased by almost 170% over that of the 40 wt% TiO2/HNBR composite at 30 kV mm(-1), mainly because of the breaking up of the TiO2 filler network by the addition of ESO, but the greatly weakened HNBR molecular interaction also played a role. The corresponding mechanism was proposed based on the interaction between HNBR and ESO. Furthermore, a relatively high tensile strength (about 6 MPa) was successfully achieved for the 30 wt% ESO/(40 wt% TiO2/HNBR) composite, a big advantage for the practical application of a DE. Our work demonstrated that a filler/polymer DE with a relatively high actuated strain and tensile strength could be successfully achieved by controlling the molecular interaction and dielectric filler network, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high performance DEs.

Abstract:Modification is mostly used to adjust and increase the performance of polymers by employing organic or inorganic fillers in composites. It is significant to investigate the functions of different fillers in polymer matrix. In this work, we prepared a series of composites by using polyurethane/acrylic dispersions as polymer matrix and nanofillers (cellulose nanocrystals, carbon nanotubes and aluminum oxide nanoparticles) as modifiers to study their micro‐structure and applied performance. It is found that the different nanofillers can be dispersed in PUA homogenously, which are inclusive physically. Different nanofillers have a noticeable influence on the Tg for the acrylate copolymers and the Tg of the interphase between the acrylate and polyurethane. The CNTs significantly increases the elongation to 127.29%, and gives the highest dielectric response. We imply that the CNTs may be the most significant fillers to increase the mechanical and electrical properties.

Abstract:The rapid growth, integration, and miniaturization of electronics have raised significant concerns about how to handle issues with electromagnetic interference (EMI), which has increased demand for the creation of EMI shielding materials. In order to effectively shield against electromagnetic interference (EMI), this study developed a variety of thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)-based nanocomposites in conjunction with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and graphite. The filler percentage and nanocomposites thickness were tuned and optimized. The designed GF15-TPU nanocomposite, which has a 5 mm thickness, 15 weight percent cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, and 35 weight percent graphite, showed the highest total EMI shielding effectiveness value of 41.5 dB in the 8.2-12.4 GHz frequency range, or 99.993% shielding efficiency, out of all the prepared polymer nanocomposites. According to experimental findings, the nanocomposite's dipole polarization, interfacial polarization, conduction loss, eddy current loss, natural resonance, exchange resonance, multiple scattering, and high attenuation significantly contribute to improving its electromagnetic interference shielding properties. The created TPU-based nanocomposites containing graphite and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have the potential to be used in communication systems, defense, spacecraft, and aircraft as EMI shielding materials.
