Abstract:Elevated arsenic (As) levels in groundwater pose significant hazards to public health, especially the difficult-to-remove As(III). Herein, novel oxidation-adsorption bifunctional ferrihydrite chitosan bionanocomposite hierarchical porous beads (Fe-CB-Cl) were fabricated by introducing renewable oxidizing N-chlorosulfonamide. The regular honeycomb-like macropores of Fe-CB-Cl dispersed vertically from the surface to the interior, which effectively enhances the utilization of active sites and mass transfer. Thanks to oxidation-enhanced adsorption, Fe-CB-Cl rapidly reduced As(III) levels to reach drinking water standards (below10 μg/L). Similar removal efficiency was achieved within a broad pH range of 3–10, or in the presence of commonly occurring cations (K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), anions (NO3−, SO42−, CO32−, and SiO32−) and humic acid, except at high concentration of phosphate. Its removal capacity of As(III) was higher than 42.9 mg/L. Using Fe-CB-Cl, As(III)-contaminated groundwater could be purified to reach drinking water standards. The used Fe-CB-Cl can be well revived sequentially desorbing with NaOH solution and chlorinating with NaClO solution. Fe-CB-Cl readily applied to fixed-bed and its packed column can purify 980 BV of As(III)-contaminated groundwater. The study proposed a feasible strategy to enhance the performance and application potential of iron-based bionanocomposite for the purification of As(III) contamination.
