Abstract:Through the analysis of Xiao Hong's novel Sheng Si Chang (Field of Life and Death), this article points out that Xiao Hong's writing was quite loyal to the being of the modern Chinese folk due to her experience of frustrations with a sensitive heart. On the stand of enlightenment, she reached the perfection both in the depth of exposing the ignorance and savageness of Chinese folk and in revealing their firm holds of life and bitter struggles before death, which proves Xiao Hong among the best writers in modern China. Her poetic tone, lyrical sentences and hovering emotions, also mark herself as one of the modern Chinese writers who owned a keen sense of literary style.

Abstract:Ever since humans used branches and polished stones as weapons and tools, and made containers with clay, they had begun to get civilized apart from the wildness. With fossil energy and mechanical technology, cities, farmlands, and gardens have been constantly displacing the nature, and the wildness is disappearing. Human beings lost their instinct of wildness, lonely and dispirited. Nowadays, it is time to call for the return toward wildness. Urban wildness exists both in wildscapes and the human-intervention-free natural process or wild creatures. It is key to sustaining a healthy urban ecosystem as it can work with the laws of nature and the internal deep order as a natural ecosystem. Inspired by the aesthetics of urban wildness, humans explore the unknown world by their instinct. For me, the Fengshui forest and courtyard pond in my childhood and the relics in Yuan-ming Yuan were all unforgettable wildness. Today's ecological civilization enters a new era that embraces wildness, and defending urban wildness is the only way for humans to move toward a higher level of civilization.

Abstract:After Bai Lu Yuan (White Deer Plateau) was published in early 1990s, it was quickly to be praised highly as the most important novel in contemporary Chinese literature. In a general view, the contribution of this novel is said to have a recognition of the value of reconstructing traditional culture and a reflection of the 20th century history of modernity. But it has a deeper and wider background to contain cultural reconstruction and historical reflection, which makes us consider to introduce a concept of "natural history" by Walter Benjamin and Theodre Adorno for a re-analysis of this novel, and to take "natural history" as the ideological foundation of this novel's expression of history, life existence and ontology of life. Either the fate of declining that the rural China faced in transformation, or life and death brought up by the 20th century radical modernity, are put upon the foundation of "natural history", thus it belongs to the earth's strong power to wipe out history. Just in this case, this novel can innately reveal a powerful epic nature and a tragic sense. It also reveals a re-opening route and way of 1990s Chinese literature.

A Camel of Xiangzi:An Enlightening Tragedy from a Folk View

Abstract:This paper makes an exploration of the relationship between the folk and the enlightening and Lao She the author's psychlogy of writing , which underlines the text of A Camel of Xiangzi. Symbolically, the novel has an implicit structure, namely, a man's path of downfall. In Xiangzi's struggle against the fate, Hunu and Ruan Ming acted only as the roles of lure of the web respectively. And a hierarchic interpretation of the image of Hunu in the novel's explicit structure reveals the rich implication and immortal charm of Hunu as an artistic image both in the folk form and in the real sense of human nature. However, the novel leaves something to be desirable in the later part. As a member of townpeople, Lao She goes beyond his limitations when he describes Xiangzi's charge at the political web. Although he is bitterly critical about the townpeople, he is not likely to create a distillation of spirit.

Abstract:The philosophy of life generated by Zhuangzi reflected his thinking about the ultimate meaning and the value of life in the"Ceremony Disintegration"Warring States Periods.Zhuangzi inherited and developed the doctrine of Laozi.Zhuangzi changed Laozi's attitude to the social and political change,but stood on the spiritual principles,and was committed to explore the significance of the existence and value of individual life.Zhuangzi started from the existence of a person's individual life,and changed Laozi's concern about the development of human life into the pursuit of personal independence and freedom of the spirit,which showed a concern of the spiritual world and the features of "philosophy of life" between spirit and body.His concept of happiness still inspires us today.
“The Becoming Self-Conscious of Zawen”: Literary Modernity and Politics of Language in Lu Xun’s Essay Production During His Transitional Period

Abstract:While Lu Xun’s early works of fiction have long established his literary reputation, this article focuses on the form and content of his zawen essays written several years later, from 1925 to 1927. Examining the zawen from Huagai ji, Huagai ji xubian (sequel), and Eryi ji (Nothing more), the author views these as “transitional” essays which demonstrate an emergent self-consciousness in Lu Xun’s writing. Through close reading of a selection of these essays, the author considers the ways in which they point toward a state of crisis for Lu Xun, as well as a means of tackling his sense of passivity and “petty matters.” This crisis-state ultimately yields a new literary form unique to the era, a form which represents a crucial source of Chinese modernity. From sheer impossibility and a “negating spirit” emerges a new and life-affirming possibility of literary experience.

“Nature” in WANG Guo-wei Poetics:War Arising from a Word

Abstract:The “nature” view in WANG Guo-wei’s poetics was set up in terms of the ideological resources from both the Chinese and the western poetic traditions. That is, when he was constructing his own “nature” ideology, he was faced with both the traditional Chinese sense of “nature” and the western sense of it. These two senses do not have equality and homogeneity. The western theoretical subjectivity is composed of three senses of “nature”, that is, barbarism, organism, and irrationalism. But the senses of “nature” in ancient Chinese poetics suffer from depressing or being marginalized. Accordingly, it is better to treat the essence of “nature” in WANG’s poetics as a scramble for the symbolic meaning in the knowledge/power relationship under that unique historical context, rather than as a fusion of the two sources. It is owing to the occupation of the western symbolic meaning in the various modern Chinese lexical items that the authoritative status of the western meaning in contemporary Chinese ideological system is firmly set up.

Abstract:Though means love of in Greek,modern philosophy concerns more about knowledge than wisdom.It almost takes the pursuit of knowledge as its only purpose and neglects wisdom.However,both Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy have a tradition of paying attention to wisdom.For both of them,wisdom is superior to knowledge.Wisdom is speculation about the essence of knowledge and life,and the guide of praxis.Among modern Chinese philosophers,Feng Qi was the only one who reflected on the problem of wisdom.For Feng,wisdom was philosophical wisdom and the theory about xing and Dao.It was capability of virtue.That Feng defined wisdom as knowing made it lose its relevance to praxis.
