Abstract:By physical and chemical dehydration technique to remove OH group from raw materials and via built-in casting method to make glass fiber preform, mid-infrared fluorotellurite glass fibers with low loss of 3.61dB/m at 1550nm were fabricated recently. With the addition of fluoride components, fluorotellurite glass fiber cane presents a ‘water-free’ state with a broadband transparency in the range of 0.38–4.2µm. By the continuous-wave self-phase modulation method, the nonlinear refractive index n2 and the effective nonlinear parameter γ of the made fluorotellurite glass fiber were estimated to be 1.4×10−18m2/W and 20.9/W/km at 1550nm, respectively. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A tellurium-doped germanosilicate optical fiber was developed by modified chemical vapor deposition and solution doping techniques. Using the continuous-wave self-phase modulation method, the nonresonant nonlinear refractive index, n(2), was measured to be 5: 52 x 10(-20) m(2)/W, which is 2 to 3 times that of the undoped germanosilicate glass fiber. Polyhedron structures TeO3 and TeO4 with GeO4 and SiO4 are believed responsible for lower phonon energy, more nonbridging oxygens, and a larger hyperpolarization, leading to the observed higher nonresonant optical nonlinearity. Abstract:We report on designing, fabrication and experimental characterization of highly nonlinear, tellurite glass photonic crystal fibers with engineered normal dispersion characteristics for coherent supercontinuum generation. Effectively single mode, air-hole lattice fibers, with measured, all-normal dispersion profiles as flat as -10 to -50 ps/mn/km over 1500-2400 nm wavelengths are developed and investigated. Supercontinuum spectra are measured for these fibers, with a spectral width covering 1100-2600 nm wavelengths under pumping with a robust, fixed-wavelength erbium fiber-based femtosecond laser, delivering 90 fs pulses, centered at 1560 nm with peak power below 40 kW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first engineered microstructured fiber, which due to its high nonlinearity, enables a self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking-based supercontinuum pumped with a turn-key, 40 kW femtosecond laser at spectral widths obtainable with previous all-normal dispersion fiber designs only under pumping with systems delivering peak power in the MW range.

Abstract:The influences of the Ge doped core to the properties of holey fibers are investigated in this paper. Numerical simulation shows that for holy fibers with conventional triangular transverse structure, proper-doped core can enhance the nonlinear coefficient and shift the near zero flattened dispersion region to long wavelength. By introducing a Ge doped core, a high nonlinearity holey fiber design for 1.55μm is proposed, with a nonlinear coefficient of 22 W-1km -1 and a wavelength region of 165nm in which the dispersion value is within ±1 ps/km/nm.

Abstract:A) novel photonic crystal fiber structure with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is proposed and analyzed.A parameter δ is introduced to measure the nonlinearity and dispersion flattening.The effect of hole size on nonlinearity and dispersion of the photonic crystal fiber(PCF) is analyzed by the plane wave expansion method.The new structure introduces six additional smaller holes between the holes of the first ring to reduce the effective area,and increase the nonlinearity of the fiber.By optimizing the diameters of the first,third,and the additional rings of holes,a PCF with high nonlinearity and flattened dispersion is achieved.The dispersion parameter is within(±0.5 ps/(km·nm)) in a 330 nm wavelength range,within ±0.1 ps/(km·nm) in a 230 nm wavelength range,and within(±0.05 ps/(km·nm)) in a 200 nm wavelength range.The effective area is 2.26 μm~2.The nonlinearity-dispersion flattening parameter δ=11.8 ps·W/μm~2.

Abstract:We investigated the ultrafast optical Kerr effect of the fluorotellurite glass (Ft glass), the nonlinear response time of which was measured to be less than 230fs, while the nonlinear refractive index was estimated to be 9.62×10−16cm2/W. Using optical Kerr gate (OKG) technique with Ft glass as Kerr medium, we obtained narrow-bandwidth and symmetric gated spectra from a supercontinuum (SC) generated by a femtosecond laser. Experimental results indicated that Ft glass was a good candidate for an OKG medium due to its fast response time, large nonlinearity, and high transparency.

Abstract:We propose an engineered microfiber with nano-scale slots that produce ultra-flattened and low dispersion of +/- 10 ps/(nm.km) over a 340 nm wavelength range. It is comparable with the results in photonic crystal fibers and planar slot waveguides, but can be hardly realized in conventional circular microfibers. By confining the light in a low nonlinearity air slot, the nonlinear coefficient can be greatly reduced. With the unique geometry and excellent performance, the slot microfiber offers large potential in miniature fiber devices for high-speed telecom applications. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Ge-As-Se chalcogenide glasses with MCN of 2.45-2.5 are promising nonlinear optical materials in infrared regions since they exhibit excellent infrared transparency,high third-order nonlinearity,and ultra-low photo-induced refractive index change.We therefore fabricated high purity Ge-As-Se glasses using a dynamic distillation technique,and drew core/cladding fibers through the rod-in-tube approach.The fibers show good transmittance in the 2-8μm spectral region.The background loss was around 1dB/m,and the impurity related peak loss was about 6dB/m.

Abstract:The nonlinear frequency conversion approach remains as the dominant approach to generate new laser wavelengths that are hardly achievable via regular lasing techniques relying on population inversion. Increasing either a media's optical nonlinearity or the power density of a fundamental beam or increasing both at the same time is believed to be very effective in order to enhance the nonlinear conversion efficiency. In this research, periodic ferroelectric domain structure was introduced into lithium niobate single crystal fibers by electrical poling, which then allows simultaneous use of efficient quasi-phase matching (QPM) method and strong optical confinement inside an optical fiber guide. The introduced periodic domain structures were revealed using a crossly polarized optical microscope (CPOM) and a confocal scanning optical microscope (CSOM) for quality assurance. Efficient second-harmonic generation (SHG) characterization was also performed using such fibers.

Abstract:A new nonlinear dispersion flattened photonic crystal fiber with low confinement loss is proposed. This fiber has threefold symmetry core. The doped region in the core and the big air-holes in the 1st ring can make high nonlinearity in the PCF. And the small air-holes in the 1st ring and the radial increasing diameters air-holes rings in cladding can be used to achieve the dispersion properties of the PCF. We can achieve the optimized optical properties by carefully selecting the PCFs structure parameters. A PCF with flattened dispersion is obtained. The dispersion is less than 0.8ps/(nmkm) and is larger than −0.7ps/(nmkm) from 1.515μm to 1.622μm. The nonlinear coefficient is about 12.6456W−1km−1, the fundamental mode area is about 10.2579μm2. The confinement loss is 0.30641dB/km. This work may be useful for effective design and fabrication of dispersion flattened photonic crystal fibers with high nonlinearities.
Nd3+-doped Double-Clad Fluoro-Sulfo-phosphate Fiber for Compact Kilohertz-Linewidth Single-Frequency Laser

Abstract:The utilization of single-frequency fiber lasers spans critical domains including gravitational wave detection, coherent optical communication, and atomic physics. Glass fibers doped with rare earth ions serve as pivotal gain media for them, and the quest for advanced fiber matrices is paramount. Herein, a newly developed Nd3+-doped AlF3-Na2SO4-KPO3-Zn(PO3)(2) glass is reported. The glass showcases exceptional attributes including high anti-crystallization stability (>150(degrees)C), elastic modulus (75 GPa), chemical durability (8.1x10(-7)g & sdot;cm(-2)& sdot;min(-1)), Nd3+ concentration (>10(20) ions/cm3), broad effective linewidth (45 nm), and extended lifetime (465 mu s), surpassing those of conventional silica and phosphate glasses. Moreover, a custom-designed double-clad Nd3+-doped fiber with a net gain coefficient of 3.2 dB/cm at 1064 nm is fabricated, and single-frequency laser output with a narrow linewidth of 11 kHz has been obtained utilizing a 1.4-cm-long fiber, indicating the potential of this fiber as a promising gain medium for ultra-narrow-linewidth single-frequency fiber lasers.

Abstract:A nonlinear optical (NLO) active alkoxysilane chromophore (SGDR1) was synthesized. A fluorinated polyimide/SGDR1 composite was prepared to improve the poor temporal stability of second-order NLO effects of the reported poled sol-gel film. The poled composite film was characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA and UV-Vis. The composite displays good hydrophobic properties, high glass transition temperature (266 °C), and high decomposition temperature (433 °C). The second harmonic coefficient d33 of the composite was measured to be 16.77 pm/V by using maker fringe technique. The new NLO composite exhibits 85 % of the original d33 over 720 h at 100 °C and possesses much better stability than the reported sol-gel film.
Chalcogenide glass Photonic Crystal Fiber with flattened dispersion and high nonlinearity at telecommunication wavelength

Abstract:A highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber with eight ring octagonal structure is proposed. Chalcogenide glass of As2S3 is used as the material for this photonic crystal fiber structure. The finiteelement method with perfectly matched boundary layer is employed to analyze the guiding properties. Non linearity of 13,584.5 per W-km is obtained at 1.55 μm with reasonable flattened dispersion of -25 ps/nm-km to -28 ps/nm-km. Confinement loss achieved is of the order of 10 dB/km. Large negative dispersion is also obtained ranging from wavelength of 0.85 μm to 1.95 μm, which can be used for dispersion compensation in fiber optic communication. This Photonic Crystal Fiber structure can also be used for nonlinear applications like ultra short soliton pulse transmission, optical parametric amplification, supercontinuum generation. Abstract:This study reports the successful fabrication of high-positive refractive index change waveguides, exceeding 0.02 in fluoride glasses, marking a significant advancement in integrated optical components for visible to mid-infrared applications. This research overcomes longstanding challenges in direct-write photonics and therefore enables the realization of true 3D geometries in optical elements, access to novel visible lasing wavelengths typically suppressed in high phonon hosts, and the miniaturization of mid-infrared optical devices. The investigation into the waveguides' origin attributes the exceptionally high index change to material densification driven by the migration of specific elements, mainly barium, within the glass composition. These waveguides, characterized by low insertion losses, and highly customizable V-numbers evidenced by multimode operation at 3.5 um, offers substantial potential for chip laser technology and the creation of advanced optical devices for sensing and spectroscopy.

Abstract:7.5wt% silver nanocrystals were successfully incorporated into an easily-fiberized tellurite glass with composition of 75TeO2-20ZnO-5Na2O (mol%). Surface Plasmon resonance absorption peak was found to be centered at around 552nm as the indirect evidence of silver nanocrystals with an average radius of 2.18nm.
Engineering Waveguide Nonlinear Effective Length via Low Index Thin Films

Abstract:Novel photonic nanowires were fabricated using low-index materials and tested in the near-infrared spectrum to assess their nonlinear optical properties. In this work, we argue the need to redefine the standard nonlinear figure of merit in terms of nonlinear phase shift and optical transmission for a given propagation distance. According to this new metric, our devices largely outperform all established platforms for devices with a linear footprint in the range of 50 to 500 um, which is demonstrated to be an outstanding technological gap. For 85 fs pulses, with carrier wavelength at 1480nm and sub-uW power levels, a spectral broadening exceeding 80% of the initial bandwidth was recorded over a propagation length of just 50 um. Leveraging on CMOS-compatible processes and well-established materials such as silicon, silica, and indium tin oxide, our devices bring great promise for developing alternative all-optical devices with unparalleled nonlinear performances within the aforementioned range.

Abstract:A fluorosilicate (FS) nano-crystallized glass ceramic (NGC) is one of the most commonly used gain materials for applications in optical devices due to its excellent thermal stability as well as high-efficiency luminescence. However, FS glass can hardly be used to prepare NGC fibers due to its high preparation temperature. Here, a series of low-temperature fluoro-borosilicate (FBS) glasses were designed for the fabrication of active NGC fibers. By modulating B2O3, the preparation temperature of FBS glass was reduced to 1050 °C, and the crystallization in FBS NGCs was more controllable than in FS NGC. The crystallization of the impure phase was inhibited, and single-phase rare earth (RE)-fluoride nanocrystals were controllably precipitated in the FBS NGCs. The 40Si-20B FBS NGC not only exhibited a higher optical transmittance, but the luminescence efficiency was also much higher than traditional FS NGCs. More importantly, NGC fibers were successfully fabricated by using the designed FBS glass as core glass. Nanocrystals were controllably precipitated and greatly enhanced, and upconversion luminescence was observed in NGC fibers. The designed FBS NGCs provided high-quality optical gain materials and offered opportunities for fabricating a wide range of NGC fibers for multiple future applications, including fiber lasers and sensors.
