Abstract:Uniform ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres have been synthesized by a facile coprecipitation and annealing method. The resultant ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres exhibit high specific discharge capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical performance may be attributed to the beneficial features of reduced diffusion length for Li+ ions and enhanced structural integrity with sufficient void space for buffering the volume variation during the Li+ insertion/extraction.

Abstract:The hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres are successfully prepared by a solvothermal carbon templating method and then a annealing process. The crystal phase and particle morphology of resultant ZnMn2O4 microspheres are characterized by XRD and TEM. The electrochemical properties of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres as an anode material are investigated for lithium ion batteries. The results show that the ZnMn2O4 microspheres exhibit a reversible capacity of 855.8mAhg−1 at a current density of 200mAg−1 after 50 cycles. Even at 1000mAg−1, the reversible capacity of the ZnMn2O4 microspheres is still kept at 724.4mAhg−1 after 60 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests the promising potential of the hollow core–shell ZnMn2O4 microspheres in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:High-quality porous ZnMn2O4 microspheres composed of interconnected nanoparticles have been achieved by calcination of metal carbonates synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. The porous microspheres are characterized by XRD patterns, SEM, TEM, and HRTEM images to reveal the crystal phase and particle morphology. The porous structure and nanoscale building blocks of ZnMn2O4 microspheres make them a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries. After 300 cycles at a current density of 500mAg−1, they still preserve a reversible capacity of 800mAhg−1. Even at 2Ag−1, the reversible capacity could be 395mAhg−1, higher than the theoretical capacity of graphite. The superior electrochemical performances can be associated with the porous structure and nanoscale building blocks, which promote the contacting between electrolyte and electrode, accommodate volume change during discharge/charge processes, and provide a large number of active surface sites for lithium storage.

Abstract:Porous ZnMn2O4 microspheres were prepared via a facile co-precipitation method followed by calcination at various temperatures and evaluated as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The sample prepared at 600 degrees C outperformed the other samples in terms of electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity, high-rate capability, and excellent cycling performance. The capacity of the sample remained as high as 999 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 100 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles- one of the best ever reported for ZnMn2O4-based materials. A high reversible capacity of 400 mAh g(-1) was retainable at a current density of 2000 mA g(-1) after 2500 cycles. A novel electrochemical reaction mechanism of ZnMn2O4 anodes was established and investigated at length. The Mn3O4 observed during the charge process was largely responsible for the enhanced performance, as confirmed by x- ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The relatively large surface area, abundant porosity, large ion exchange space, and strong mechanical stability of the porous connected 3D framework were responsible for the unique oxidation/ reduction Mn2+-> Mn3+ process we observed.

Abstract:In this work, carbon-coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticle (NP) hollow microspheres are fabricated by a facile emulsion-based assembly method followed by in situ ligand carbonization. Specifically, MnFe2O4 NPs stabilized by oleic acid (OA) are the primary building blocks to assemble hollow microspheres, while the subsequent carbonization of OA ligands leads to the formation of uniform carbon coatings without degrading the ordering of NPs. As anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, such MnFe2O4 NP hollow composite microspheres exhibit significantly improved electrochemical performance in comparison with their solid counterparts and most MnFe2O4-based anodes reported to date, retaining a high reversible capacity of 730mAhg−1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 2Ag−1. Furthermore, even when tested at an ultrahigh rate of 10Ag−1, MnFe2O4 NP hollow microspheres can still deliver a high specific capacity of 433mAhg−1. The superior performance of MnFe2O4 NP hollow microspheres is attributable to their hollow superstructure, close-packed configuration of the constituent NPs, and uniform carbon coatings, which facilitate lithium-ion and electron transport while simultaneously alleviating the drastic volumetric change during cycling. Our work establishes that the optimized MnFe2O4 anode material offers great promise for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Mixed/composite oxides of transition metals with hollow structures, especially multishelled hollow architecture, have promising potential for different applications, but their syntheses still remain a big challenge. Herein, a facile coordination polymer precursor method was developed to construct various multishelled Zn-Mn-O hollow micro-spheres, including Zn-Mn-O-3, ZnMn2O4, and ZnMn2O4/Mn2O3. The composition of the hollow structures can be adjusted by controlling the composition of the coordination polymer precursors, which are easily obtained with Zn2+, Mn2+, and salicylic acid under solvothermal conditions. With a simple programmable heating process, the shell of the hollow structures can be adjusted and double-/triple-shelled ZnMnO3, ZnMn2O4, and ZnMn2O4/Mn2O3 hollow microspheres have been controllably obtained. When the triple-shelled ZnMn2O4 hollow microspheres are used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, excellent activity and enhanced stability can be achieved. The triple-shelled hollow ZnMn2O4 exhibits a reversible capacity of 537 mA.h.g(-1) at 400 mA.g(-1) and a nearly 100% capacity retention after 150 cycles. This strategy is facile and scalable for the production of high-quality complex hollow nanostructures, with the possibility of extension to the preparation of other mixed metal oxides with complex structures.

Abstract:The use of manganese oxides as promising candidates for anode materials in lithium ion batteries has attracted a significant amount of attention recently. Here, we develop a general approach to synthesize hollow nanospheres of MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO, using carbon nanospheres as a template and a reagent. Depending on the calcination temperature, time and atmosphere, hollow nanospheres of MnO2 assembled by randomly dispersed nanosheets, or hollow nanospheres of Mn3O4 and MnO composed of aggregated nanoparticles, are produced. The electrochemical properties of the three hollow nanoparticles are investigated in terms of cycling stability and rate capability. They deliver the specific capacities of 840, 1165 or 1515 mA h g−1 after 60 cycles at 100 mA g−1 for MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO. Even at 500 mA g−1, the reversible capacities could be still kept at 637, 820, and 1050 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles. The outstanding performances might be related with their hollow structure, porous surface and nanoscale size.

Abstract:CuCo2S4 hollow spheres are synthesized from CuCo2O4 hollow spheres without destroying the hollow structure, and N/S doped graphene is coated simultaneously through an electrostatic self-assembly method. Benefiting from the simultaneously design of composition and structure of mixed metal sulfides, the composite exhibit excellent cycle stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Mn2O3 hierarchical microspheres assembled from porous nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a two-step method. The flower-like Mn2O3 porous hierarchical microspheres display high specific discharge capacity with good cycling stability and excellent rate capability. These results prove that the capacity of materials with poor lithiation activity (such as Mn2O3) could be improved by utilizing their hierarchical porous structure.

Abstract:A nanohybrid based on ZnFe2O4 nanospheres and graphene nanosheets (ZnFe2O4/G) has been synthesized by a facile one-pot in situ solvothermal route. The results show that the formation of ZnFe2O4 and the reduction of graphite oxide take place simultaneously during the solvothermal reactions. Spheric ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles with a size of 100-200 nm are confined in between the graphene sheets, forming a unique hybrid nanostructure. The electrochemical measurements have shown that the ZnFe2O4/G hybrid exhibits improved electrochemical Li-storage properties compared with bare ZnFe2O4, due to the combined buffering, confining and conducting effects of the in situ introduced graphene nanosheets.

Abstract:Spent zinc-manganese batteries contain valuable elements, especially Zn and Mn, and recycling these metal elements can realize the sustainable development of resources. In this paper, a novel process of preparing ZnMn2O4 as anode material for lithium-ion batteries from the spent zinc-manganese battery is present. Nano ZnMn2O4 is synthesized by the low-temperature hydrothermal method, and the formation mechanism is discussed. The structure, morphology, and composition of the products are characterized by XRD and SEM. The result shows that ZnMn2O4 with a crystal size of about 50 nm is prepared under the conditions of T = 200°C, pH = 7, reaction time t = 3 days, and n(Zn: Mn) = 0.966:2, which have the advantages of good crystallinity and high purity. The nanocrystallization and spheroid-like structure of ZnMn2O4 determine that the battery assembled with ZnMn2O4 has a high initial discharge capacity, and the initial discharge specific capacity reaches 902.5 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. This study shows that the nano ZnMn2O4 synthesized by the hydrothermal method is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Graphene/ZnO composites with different contents of ZnO have been successfully synthesizedviaa liquid phase route. The structure, morphology, and electrochemical performances of the composites are investigated by XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, AFM, and electrochemical measurement. The results reveal that ZnO nanoparticles wedged on the surface of the graphene nanosheets. The initial capacity of graphene/ZnO (1 : 1) reached 1155.27 mAh g−1, which increased 162.87 mAh g−1compared with the initial capacity of graphene. This could be attributed to the unique structure of the prepared composite and synergies of graphene and ZnO in the lithium ion storage.
