Abstract:As the bitrate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) system is continuously increasing, how to effectively allocate the system bandwidth among the huge number of optical network units (ONUs) is one of the key problems before OFDM-PON can be practical deployed. Unlike traditional bandwidth allocation scheme, in this paper, the transmission performance of single ONU is for the first time taken into consideration and optimized. To reduce the manufacturing complexity and fully utilize the processing ability of the receivers, the system bandwidth is equally distributed to the ONUs. Bit loading is used to allocate the total transmission capacity, and power loading is used to guarantee the ONUs have balanced transmission performance even if they operate at different bitrate. In this way, a dynamic and balanced capacity allocation scheme with uniform bandwidth for OFDM-PON systems can be realized. At last, an experimental system is established to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the influence that the scheme brings to the whole system is also analyzed.

Abstract:A novel subband access scheme for multiband high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network (PON) is proposed, where the granularity of the bandwidth allocation is as small as the bandwidth of just one subcarrier and the ONUs only receives the desired subcarriers according to the bandwidth allocation strategy from the whole downstream OFDM signal without band limitation. Since the ONUs do not have to receive a complete OFDM band, low-bandwidth and low-speed devices can be used to reduce ONU cost. The algorithm used in the scheme is also explained in detail, and a 1-Tb/s experimental system is successfully established to prove the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:We propose an upstream PON transmission scheme based on optical carrier suppression at ONU and heterodyne detection at OLT. Simulation results of 25-Gb/s upstream OFDM-PON show a power budget improvement of 8-dB compared to traditional IM-DD scheme. In addition, it is observed that the scheme does not suffer from dispersion-induced power fading in traditional double sideband (DSB) transmission.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for the SSB-ADM-based OFDM-PON system.Its downlink transmission is based on 10 Gbit/s SSB-based OFDM-4-QAM modulation,while the uplink transmission is based on 2.5 Gbit/s ASK modulation in the Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA) mode by using the other sideband retained in the downlink signals.This architecture can perfectly overcome the Rayleigh backscattering effect in the bidirectional transmission.When the backscattering effect is considered,the power penalty will be <0.8 dB for downlink signals and <1.8 dB for uplink signals.

Abstract:Due to its outstanding performance in frequency utilization and overcoming the multi-path fading,OFDM has been the optimal technology in power line communications.As the power line channel was stationary in time domain,a novel algorithm was proposed in this paper which utilizes the last time bit-loading results and the new channel characteristic to get the new scheme without iteration and the complexity of algorithm has been simplified dramatically.The new algorithm was tested by practical continuous measured data,and was proved to be correct and efficient.The complexity of this algorithm is analyzed and compared to the other typical bit-loading algorithms,the obvious advantage is shown.

Abstract:Adaptive resource allocation algorithms for single and multi-user uplink OFDM access system are addressed. Firstly, the optimization problem of rate-sum capacity is formulated, considering the restriction of integer bit constellation in practice. Then, a fast bit allocation algorithm is proposed for single user OFDM system, which allocates a certain number of bits using water-filling approach and distributes the remaining power via greedy method, subsequently. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is much lower than that of the greedy algorithm. Finally, a novel subcarrier and bit allocation algorithm is proposed for the multi-user case. It first determines the assignment of subcarriers to different users and then allocates bits to the assigned subcarriers via the above fast bit allocation algorithm for each single user. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher spectral efficiency, in comparison with the other existing algorithms.

Abstract:The Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network(OFDM-PON) technology is one of the current research focuses in optical access networks.This paper first briefly describes its study background,explains its principle,network architecture and key technologies.Then it studies and analyzes OFDM-PON-based services and bandwidth scheduling and predicts the prospects of its applications.Study results show that compared with the conventional PON systems,OFDM-PON system has its transmission bandwidth dramatically increased and realizes subcarrier-,modulation format-,and time slot-based services and bandwidth scheduling.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel wavelength division multiplexing-orthogonal frequency multiple access (WDM-OFDMA) union passive optical network (uni-PON) architecture with dynamic resource allocation and variable rate access. It can offer an infrastructure with different access solutions. According to the quality of service (QoS) requirement of different services, the optical local terminal (OLT) can dynamically assign different resources as well as the access rates to different services. An experiment has been demonstrated with 4 wavelengths achieving combined signal at 109.92-Gb/s. A physical-layer adaptive algorithm is employed for the resource allocation and variable rate access. Abstract:A novel OFDM-PON structure based on channel characteristic division is proposed to reduce the sampling and computation requirement at the ONUs. In this method, the preprocessed downstream signal propagated to the ONUs is diversely aliased on spectrum by the sub-Nyquist sampling. With the subcarriers in OFDM symbols distorted according to the channel characteristics and overlaid by sections, users can recover the expected original data sent to the specific ONU lossless. Based on this method, the receiving capability of one of the 32 ONUs in a 40-Gb/s 32-QAM channel characteristic division OFDM-PON experiment is tested. The experiment confirms that the sampling rates and FFT sizes can be reduced to 1/32 on average compared to the conventional method. This new method also supports dynamic bandwidth allocations and improves the system efficiency and security by realizing the addressing process in the physical layer.

Abstract:The Adaptive Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is suitable to be used in the distribution network power-line communication(PLC). The bit-loading algorithm is an important constituent of adaptive OFDM. Here, according to the actual condition of PLC channel, the optimization model for power-line communication is analyzed. Then a novel bit-loading algorithm, which applies the rate adaptation, is proposed. By means of sorting sub-channels and principle of greedy method, this algorithm can implement the bit loading rapidly. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has low operational complexity and can get the satisfying bit-loading result.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate, transmit, and receive an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, which is combining minimum shift keying (MSK) coding with OFDM optical modulation, for downlink application in a 4 x 2.5-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical access network, is proposed and experimentally validated. We also realize wavelength remodulation for carrying upstream on-off keying (OOK) data to reduce the cost budget at the optical network unit. The experimental results show that the power penalties for the downlink and the uplink data after transmission over 25-km SMF-28 fiber are 0.1 dB and smaller than 0.4 dB, respectively.
