Abstract:In this paper, we find infinite hyperbolic 3-manifolds that admit no weakly symplectically fillable contact structures, using tools in Heegaard Floer theory. We also remark that part of these manifolds do admit tight contact structures.

Abstract: In the first part of this paper, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic closed 3-manifolds which admit no symplectic fillable contact structure. All these 3-manifolds are obtained by Dehn surgeries along L-space knots or L-space two-component links. In the second part of this paper, we show that Dehn surgeries along certain knots and links, including those considered in the first part, admit Stein fillable contact structures as long as the surgery coefficients are sufficiently large.

Abstract:Infinitely many contact 3-manifolds each admitting infinitely many, pairwise non-diffeomorphic Stein fillings are constructed. We use Lefschetz fibrations in our constructions and compute their first homologies to distinguish the fillings.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every oriented closed hyperbolic $3$--manifold $N$ admits some finite cover $M$ with the following property. There exists some even lattice point $w$ on the boundary of the dual Thurston norm unit ball of $M$, such that $w$ is not the real Euler class of any weakly symplectically fillable contact structure on $M$. In particular, $w$ is not the real Euler class of any transversely oriented, taut foliation on $M$. This supplies new counter-examples to Thurston's Euler class one conjecture.

Tight contact structures on hyperbolic homology 3-spheres

Abstract:We produce a large class of hyperbolic homology 3-spheres admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures. We also produce a sub-class admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures within the same homotopy class of oriented plane distributions. As a corollary, we give a recipe to construct hyperbolic L-spaces admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures. We also introduce a notion of geometric limits of contact structures compatible with geometric limits of hyperbolic manifolds and study the behavior of the tight contact structures we construct under geometric limits.

Non-fillability of overtwisted contact manifolds via polyfolds

Abstract:We prove that any weakly symplectically fillable contact manifold is tight. Furthermore we verify the strong Weinstein conjecture for contact manifolds that appear as the concave boundary of a directed symplectic cobordism whose positive boundary satisfies the weak-filling condition and is overtwisted. Similar results are obtained in the presence of bordered Legendrian open books whose binding-complement has vanishing second Stiefel-Whitney class. The results are obtained via polyfolds.

Strong Symplectic Fillability of Contact Torus Bundles

Abstract:In this paper, we study strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability of some tight contact structures on negative parabolic and negative hyperbolic torus bundles over the circle. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative parabolic torus bundle, we completely determine its strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative hyperbolic torus bundle, we give a necessary condition for it being strongly symplectically fillable. For the virtually overtwisted tight contact structure on the negative parabolic torus bundle with monodromy $-\,T^n$ ($n<0$), we prove that it is Stein fillable. In addition, we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Golla and Lisca.

Abstract:In this note, we classify Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds up to diffeomorphism. Some contact 3-manifolds in this family can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ along certain Legendrian 2-bridge knots. We also classify Stein fillings, up to symplectic deformation, of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds which can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ along certain Legendrian twist knots. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact hyperbolic 3-manifolds up to symplectic deformation.

Abstract:We prove hyperbolic 3-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a unit quasiconformal deformation of a Kleinian group extends to an equivariant bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between quotients whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance form the boundary of the convex core for points in the thick part. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves. We use this inflexibility to give a new proof of the convergence of pseudo-Anosov double-iteration on the quasi-Fuchsian space of a closed surface, and the resulting hyperbolization theorem for closed 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that Gromov-Thurston's principle works for hyperbolic 3-manifolds of infinite volume and with finitely generated fundamental group. As an application, we have a new proof of Ending Lamination Theorem. Our proof essentially relays only on Maximum Volume Law for hyperbolic 3-simplices.

Abstract:From the view of Heegaard splitting, it is known that if a closed orientable 3-manifold admits a distance at least three Heegaard splitting, then it is hyperbolic. However, for a closed orientable 3-manifold admitting only distance at most two Heegaard splittings, there are examples shows that it could be reducible, Seifert, toroidal or hyperbolic. According to Thurston's Geometrization conjecture, the most important piece of eight geometries is hyperbolic. Thus to read out a hyperbolic 3-manifold from a distance two Heegaard splittings is critical in studying Heegaard splittings. Inspired by the construction of hyperbolic 3-manifolds with a distance two Heegaard splitting [Qiu, Zou and Guo, Pacific J. Math. 275 (2015), no. 1, 231-255], we introduce the definition of a locally large geodesic in curve complex and furthermore the locally large distance two Heegaard splitting. Then we prove that if a 3-manifold admits a locally large distance two Heegaard splitting, then it is a hyperbolic manifold or an amalgamation of a hyperbolic manifold and a seifert manifold along an incompressible torus, i.e., almost hyperbolic, while the example in Section 3 shows that there is a non hyperbolic 3-manifold in this case. After examining those non hyperbolic cases, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a hyperbolic 3-manifold when it admits a locally large distance two Heegaard splitting.

Abstract: In this paper, we determine the Euler characteristics and signatures of the exact symplectic fillings of the contact double, 3-fold or 4-fold branched covers of the standard contact 3-sphere along certain transverse quasi-positive links. These links include all quasi-positive knots with crossing numbers smaller than 11 and all quasi-positive links with crossing numbers smaller than 12 and nonzero nullity.

Abstract:Abstract For any asymptotically dynamically convex contact manifold $Y$, we show that $SH_{\ast }(W)=0$ is a property independent of the choice of topologically simple (i.e., $c_1(W)=0$ and $\pi _{1}(Y)\rightarrow \pi _1(W)$ is injective) Liouville filling $W$. In particular, if $Y$ is the boundary of a flexible Weinstein domain, then any topologically simple Liouville filling $W$ has vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we answer a question of Lazarev partially: a contact manifold $Y$ admitting flexible fillings determines the integral cohomology of all the topologically simple Liouville fillings of $Y$. The vanishing result provides an obstruction to flexible fillability. As an application, we show that all Brieskorn manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ cannot be filled by flexible Weinstein manifolds.
Fillability obstructions for high-dimensional confoliations

Abstract:In this paper, we study confoliations in dimensions higher than three mostly from the perspective of symplectic fillability. Our main result is that Massot-Niederkrüger-Wendl's bordered Legendrian open book, an object that obstructs the weak symplectic fillability of contact manifolds, admits a generalization for confoliations equipped with symplectic data. Applications include the non-fillability of the product of an overtwisted contact manifold and a class of symplectic manifolds, and the fact that Bourgeois contact structures associated with overtwisted contact manifolds admit no weak symplectic fillings for which the symplectic structure restricts at the boundary to a positive generator of the second cohomology of the torus factor. In addition, along the lines of the original $3$-dimensional work of Eliashberg and Thurston, we give a new definition of approximation and deformation of confoliations by contact structures and describe some natural examples.

Abstract:Since there is no hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem for higher dimensions, it is challenging to construct explicit hyperbolic manifolds of small volume in dimension at least four. Here, we build up closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds of volume 34 π 2 3 ⋅ 16 \frac {34\pi ^2}{3}\cdot 16 by using the small cover theory. In particular, we classify all of the orientable four-dimensional small covers over the right-angled 120-cell up to homeomorphism; these are all with even intersection forms.
Profinite rigidity witnessed by Dehn fillings of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Any profinite isomorphism between two cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds carries profinite isomorphisms between their Dehn fillings. With this observation, we prove that some cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds are profinitely rigid among all compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through detecting their exceptional Dehn fillings. In addition, we improved a criteria for profinite rigidity of a hyperbolic knot complement or a hyperbolic-type satellite knot complement among compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through examining its characterising slopes. We obtain the following profinitely rigid examples: the complement of the Whitehead link, Whitehead sister link, $\frac{3}{10}$ two-bridge link; specific surgeries on one component of these links; the complement of (full) twist knots $\mathcal{K}_n$, Eudave-Muñoz knots $K(3,1,n,0)$, Pretzel knots $P(-3,3,2n+1)$, $5_2$ knot; the Berge manifold, and many more.

Abstract:Cappelletti-Montano et al. [6] introduced and studied taut cosymplectic circles/spheres, which are the analogues in the cosymplectic setting of taut contact circles/spheres introduced and studied by Geiges-Gonzalo [11] , [13] , [14] . The main purpose of this paper is to introduce and study, in dimension three, the hyperbolic analogue in the cosymplectic setting. We give a characterization of a taut almost cosymplectic hyperbola, classify compact three-manifolds which admit a cosymplectic hyperbola, and give a complete classification of 3D Lie groups which admit a left invariant taut cosymplectic hyperbola/circle/hyperboloid/sphere. Besides, we introduce the notion of almost bi-contact metric structure. In particular, in dimension three, an almost bi-contact structure defines a taut almost cosymplectic hyperbolas or a taut almost cosymplectic circle. Then we characterize, in dimension three, the existence of an almost bi-contact metric structure, in particular with the associated 1-forms closed, and thus a complete classification of almost bi- α -coKähler three-manifolds with constant extrinsic curvature is established.
