Abstract:We report our facile and efficient approach for synthesizing Co-Fe alloy based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, in which alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures. The catalysts with high hierarchical porosities are fabricated at an appropriate temperature of 775 degrees C without a further acid leaching treatment after pyrolysis due to the use of ZnO nanoparticles as auto -removable templates. Co/Fe atomic ratio is found to greatly influence the ORR catalytic activity. The catalyst with Co/Fe = 1 exhibits the best catalytic performance by showing an ORR onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, as well as 0.98 V and 0.83 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4, better than or approaching the performance presented by a commercial 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The Zn-air battery using the synthesized CoFe@N-C catalyst delivers a higher power density at ambient conditions by air-breathing than the one using the 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Relatively higher atomic concentrations of both Fe and Co as well as more graphitic nitrogen in the surface of CoFe@N-C detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may account for its excellent ORR catalytic activities both in alkaline and acidic en-vironments.

Abstract:It is known that introducing metal nanoparticles (e.g., Fe and Co) into N-doped carbons can enhance the activity of N-doped carbons toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, introducing metals into N-doped carbons inevitably causes the formation of multiple active sites. Thus, it is challenging to identify the active sites and unravel mechanisms responsible for enhanced ORR activity. Herein, by developing a new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Co complex as the nitrogen- and metal-containing precursor, we report the synthesis of N-doped carbon nanosheets embedded with Co nanoparticles as highly active ORR catalysts without direct metal-nitrogen bonding. Electrochemical measurements and X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicate that the carbon-nitrogen sites surrounding Co nanoparticles are responsible for the observed ORR activity and stability. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that Co nanoparticles could facilitate the protonation of O2 and thus promote the ORR activity. These results provide new prospects in the rational design and synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon materials as non-precious-metal catalysts for various electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an essential half-reaction in next-generation energy storage and conversion systems, such as metal-air batteries and fuel cells. However, its practical application is restricted by the slow intrinsic kinetics, and the high price and low storage of noble metal electrocatalysts. Herein, unique CoFe nanoparticles encapsulated in N -doped carbon (CoFe-NC-Z8-900) with high content graphite-N derived from CoFe-g-C 3 N 4 @ZIF-8 via stepwise pyrolysis is reported as effective ORR catalysts. The increase of graphitic nitrogen content can enhance both the electrical conductivity and the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates, resulting in improved catalytic performance. Fortunately, CoFe-NC-Z8-900 exhibits an exceptionally high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.914 V in a 0.1 M KOH solution. The excellent ORR electrocatalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the CoFe bimetal and the relatively high content of graphite-N. This study offers a unique method for creating powerful nitrogen-doped carbon coated metal nanoparticle electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Bifunctional electrocatalysts used for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) are of great significance for metal-air batteries. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), after undergoing a high-temperature calcination process, emerge as promising precursors for preparing efficient metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) composites tailored specifically for electrocatalytic ORR/OER. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a novel rod-shaped MOF utilizing hydrazine hydrate and cobalt acetylacetonate as the building blocks, named Co-MOF. The Co-MOF has a tetrahedral Co-N 4 coordination structure and has a high N content. Upon undergoing the pyrolysis process, the corresponding M-N-C materials, featuring Co nanoparticles encapsulated within nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@N-CNT), were obtained. These Co@N-CNT materials exhibit remarkable bifunctional ORR and OER performance with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode, vs RHE) in 0.1 M KOH and an overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, when integrated into a Zn-air battery, the Co@N-CNT catalyst demonstrates unparalleled activities, boasting a peak power density of 235 mW cm −2 and a long-term cycling stability that extends beyond 160 hours. Theoretical calculations further revealed that active Co atoms within Co@N-CNT possess a high density of states (DOS) proximate to the Fermi level, coupled with a favorably low d-band center, both of which synergistically contribute to the enhanced ORR activity. This work offers profound insights into the fabrication of metal-encapsulated CNT materials based on novel frameworks enriched with Co, thereby creating a new path for the development of high-performance energy storage and conversion systems.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials doped with nitrogen/transition metals (metal-N-C) are promising to substitute platinum (Pt) for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Metal N-C can be effectively derived from pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks but usually suffers from microscale aggregation. Herein, we report an in situ approach to anchor zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co, N-doped porous carbon on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), labeled CNTs@Co-N-PC, and investigate its performance as electrocatalysts for the ORR in alkaline medium. This strategy combines pyrolysis with acid etching of ZIF-67 to convert its Co-N-4 frames into stable and dense Co, N-doped porous carbon on the surface of MWCNTs. In the core-shell-like CNTs@Co-N-PC hybrid catalysts, the MWCNTs serving as supports effectively inhibit the aggregation of Co-N-PC and therefore guarantee sufficient active sites available for the occurrence of the ORR. Consequently, these CNTs@Co-N-PC electrocatalysts exhibit comparable activity to commercial Pt/C and are featured with favorable long-term durability and superior methanol tolerance.
Iron Nanoparticles Encapsulated in S,N-Codoped Carbon: Sulfur Doping Enriches Surface Electron Density and Enhances Electrocatalytic Activity Toward Oxygen Reduction.

Abstract:Development of highly efficient nonprecious metal (NPM) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media is challenging but of great significance. Herein, an effective ORR catalyst based on Fe nanoparticles encapsulated by S,N-codoped few-layer defective carbon (Fe@S,N-DC) was synthesized via a microwave-assisted strategy. The obtained Fe@S,N-DC nanocomposite showed a remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward ORR in acidic media, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of +0.785 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which was 80 mV more positive than that of the sulfur-free counterpart (Fe@N-DC). Furthermore, due to the protection by the S,N-codoped carbon shell, the Fe@S,N-DC nanocomposite displayed apparent stability with only a 13 mV negative shift of E1/2 after 10,000 cycles and excellent tolerance to methanol. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation of multiple defective sites on the S,N-codoped carbon surface and strong interfacial electron transfer from the Fe core to the outer carbon surface, as compared to the sulfur-free counterpart. The enriched electron density on the defective carbon surface of Fe@S,N-DC, induced by the interfacial electron transfer, facilitated the reduction of O2 to OOH*, leading to enhanced ORR performance. These results shed light on the significance of S doping in Fe-N-C catalysts in the design of high-performance NPM catalysts for ORR in acidic media.

Abstract:Abstract A set of novel catalysts FeMn/N‐CNTs that partly maintain the core‐shell structure have been prepared successfully by calcination of analogous MOF‐74, which has bimetallic species (Fe and Mn) and a cheap organic ligand (2, 5‐dihydroxylbenzoic acid, DHBA) with melamine as additional nitrogen source. These catalysts exhibit a distinctive microstructure of Fe−Mn alloys surrounded by N‐doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Electrochemical methods have been employed to investigate their activity in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution. The highest ORR performance of Fe 3 Mn 1 /N‐CNTs‐100 shows that the half wave potential is at 0.865 V and the kinetic current density (at 0.9 V) is 1.447 mA cm −2 , which are higher than those of commercial Pt/C (0.855 V, 0.946 mA cm −2 ). In addition, Fe 3 Mn 1 /N‐CNTs‐100 is much more durable than commercial Pt/C under the conditions tested. The highly efficient ORR performance may be attributed to the unique microstructure and large surface area with appropriate pore size, as well as to the synergistic effects between the pyridinic N species and the Fe−N x species that play important roles in ORR in alkaline solution. However, in acid medium, only Fe−N x species catalyze ORR and pyridinic N species are limited to work as the active sites. This study may prompt others to explore the development of heteroatom‐doped CNTs surrounding particles as efficient catalyst for ORR and fuel cell applications.

Abstract:Transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon-based nanomaterial has been used as non-precious metal catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, bamboo-like carbon nanotubes structured FeCo/N/C electrocatalyst is proved to show much enhanced performance compared with Co/N/C. MIL-53 (Fe) is used as iron source, MIL-53 (Co) is used as cobalt source and ZIF-8 as carbon source. The ball-milling procedure plays a significant role for the distribution of Fe and Co component and the formation of carbon nanotubes, which is believed to enhance the catalytic performance due to abundant electrocatalytic active sites and efficient mass transfer. The as prepared sample obtained by optimized preparation conditions exhibits outstanding ORR activity in acid solution with an onset potential of 0.96 V vs RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode), half-wave potential of 0.78 V, and a current density of 0.575 m A cm−2 at 0.7 V in a H2-O2 fuel cell test, which provides an ideal viewpoint to develop highly efficient catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction. The high ORR performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect between Fe and Co and the high conductivity and mass transfer of the carbon nanotube.

Abstract:The exploitation of high efficiency non-precious metal electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is great significant for large-scale commercialization of next-generation fuel cells. In this work, we designed and fabricated a series of porous carbazole-based N and M (Co, Fe) doped carbon framework catalysts which were obtained by the pyrolysis of a N-rich hypercrosslinked polymers derived from Friedel–Crafts reaction (abbreviated as TSP-HCP-900) followed by the incorporation of metal into the as-resulted N rich carbon (abbreviated as M-TSP-HCP-900, M = Co, Fe). Based on the high specific surface, excellent porosity, large pyridine nitrogen content and synergistic catalytic effects between the N dopants and metal nanoparticles, the M-TSP-HCP-900 exhibited superior ORR catalytic activity. Among them, the Co-TSP-HCP-900 possesses better electrocatalysis, i.e., a high diffusion limiting current density of 4.74 mA cm−2, half-wave potential of 0.8 V (vs. RHE, the same below) and onset potential of 0.9 V were found, respectively. In addition, this catalyst also discloses an excellent methanol tolerance, better durability and a biased 4e− reaction pathway, which are comparable to state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts. Taking advantage of mentioning above, the M-TSP-HCP-900 may hold great potentials as promising alternative of precious metal catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Although precious metal Pt-based cathodic nanomaterials are extensively considered as the excellent electrocatalysts for overcoming sluggish kinetics in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), their practical applications are severely impeded by high price, low earth abundance, and poor durability of Pt. Hence, it is highly desired to explore cheaper alternatives with comparable catalytic activity and durability for ORR. Herein, the high-efficiency Co–N–C catalyst, composed of CoO x and N-doped carbon, is successfully constructed by pyrolysis of bimetallic CoZn microspheres and polydopamine (PDA). The N-rich PDA could confer plentiful well-distributed Co–N x , pyridinic N active sites, and abundant hierarchical pores to the catalyst during pyrolysis. The optimal NC/CoN-2 catalyst manifests an E 1/2 of 0.818 V and a J L of 5.27 mA/cm2, as well as excellent MeOH tolerance, long-time durability, and the 4e– reaction pathway in alkaline media. Such a remarkable ORR performance of NC/CoN-2 is attributed to the simultaneous compositional (Co/N co-doping) and structural tailoring (micropore/mesopore/macropore), enabled by PDA surface coating.

Abstract:In this study, we have successfully prepared Co, Fe, and Ni co-doped and N-enriched hollow carbon (CoFeNi/NC) via a facile corrosion, pyrolysis, and replacement method, to be used as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst. The structure of polyvinylpyrrolidone/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (PVP/ZIF-8/ZIF-67) can be etched by Ni2+ during the hydrolysis process, and the resultant Zn metal can be removed by Fe2+ via a replacement reaction method. The addition of Fe and Ni enhances the graphitization degree and the specific surface area of the electrocatalyst. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized samples were carefully investigated. Fe and Ni can substantially enhance the ORR activity of the electrocatalyst. Compared to the CoZn/NC, CoFeNi/NC shows enhanced ORR performance, high current density (2.593 mA cm−2), and superior onset potential (0.914 V). Moreover, CoFeNi/NC can effectively avoid ORR performance decay, and hence an excellent long-term operational stability can be achieved.

Abstract:Metal and nitrogen co-doped catalysts have been promising alternatives to platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) over the past few decades. Herein, we have synthesized an efficient Fe–N–C catalyst by the co-calcination of NH2 and melamine. The best Fe–N–C shows a positive half-wave potential of 0.844 V, which is 14 mV higher than that of Pt/C catalyst, as well as superior methanol resistance and long-term durability in alkaline electrolyte. In addition, Fe–N–C also exhibits pronounced catalytic activity and a direct 4e− reaction pathway in acid electrolyte. We ascribed the excellent ORR performance of Fe–N–C to its crumpled structure, large specific surface area (584.6 m2 g−1) and high content of Fe-Nx sites (1.22 at. %). This study provides a simple way for the fabrication of excellent PGM-free ORR catalysts.

Nitrogen‐Doped Porous Carbon Cages for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Oxygen: Enhanced Performance with Iron and Cobalt Dual Metal Centers

Abstract:Heteroatom‐doped carbon materials are promising electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, dual metals (Fe an Co) and nitrogen‐codoped porous carbon cages (CHS‐FeCo) were synthesized by controlled pyrolysis of silica nanoparticle‐supported melamine‐formaldehyde resin embedded with iron and cobalt precursors, followed by acid etching. Transmission electron microscopy measurements confirmed the formation of hollow carbon cages, and the absence of metal (oxide) nanoparticles suggested atomic dispersion of the metal species within the mesoporous carbon skeletons. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis revealed a composition of mostly carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, with ca. 1% metals. Electrochemically, the dual‐metal ones showed a significant enhancement of the catalytic performance towards ORR in alkaline media, as compared to samples with single or no metal dopants. This was accounted for by the synergistic interaction between the Fe and Co centers in the carbon samples, as evidenced in X‐ray absorption spectroscopic studies. Remarkably, the CHS‐FeCo sample exhibited apparent resistance against KSCN poisoning, where XPS analysis revealed oxidation of KSCN and no metal‐sulfur interaction, in sharp contrast to the Fe counterpart which was easily poisoned. Results from this study suggest that the synergistic interactions between dual metal centers may be exploited for enhanced ORR performance of carbon‐based nanocomposite catalysts.

Despite the great progress that has been achieved, synthesizing three-dimensional porous nanoarchitectures derived from Co-N-C nanosheets or related nanohybrids with high content ( > 5 wt%) of exposed single-atom sites remains a challenge. Herein, novel three-dimensional mesoporous Co-N-C nanosheets network enwrapping small amount of Co nanoparticles nanohybrids are fabricated by molten-salt template-assisted pyrolysis of Co-folic acid precursors and chemical etching. In the obtained nanohybrids, the content of single-atom-like Co (SA-Co%) is 7.4 wt% < SA-Co% < 19.4 wt%. Due to the unique mesoporous nanosheets network structure and efficient synergy of atomic and nanoscaled Co species, such nanohybrids manifest enhanced ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.85 V, outperforming pure Co-N-C, Pt/C and most of other reported catalysts. Moreover, their stability exceeds that of Pt/C. This work will lead to the optimization of M-N-C nanostructures and accelerate their applications in fuel cells.

Abstract:Porous iron–nitrogen-doped carbons (FeNC) offer a great platform for construction of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in fuel cells. However, challenges still remain regarding with the collapse of carbon-skeleton during pyrolysis, uneven distribution of active sites and aggregation of metal atoms. In this work, we synthesized Fe, N co-doped conjugated microporous polymer (FeN-CMP) through a facile bottom-up strategy using 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and iron-chelated 3,8-dibromo-1,10-phenanthroline as monomers, ensuring the uniform coordination of N with Fe element in network. Then, the resulting FeN-CMP was treated by pyrolysis without structural collapse to obtain porous FeNC electrocatalyst for ORR. The most active catalyst was fabricated under 900 °C, which exhibits remarkable ORR activity in alkaline medium with half-wave potential of 0.796 V (18 mV and 105 mV positive deviation from the commercial Pt/C catalyst and post-doping catalyst), high selectivity with nearly 4e - transfer process and excellent methanol tolerance. Our study first developed porous FeNC electrocatalysts derived from Fe, N -anchoring CMPs based on pre-functionalization of monomers, which exhibits great potential as an alternative to commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR, and provides a feasible strategy of developing multi-atoms doping catalysts for energy storage and conversion as well as heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Transition metal catalysts with Metal-N-C (M-N-C) sites has been investigated as an alternative of the noble metal catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which occurs on a cathode of fuel cell. Among the methods of preparing various M-N-C catalysts, carbonized metal organic frameworks (MOF) are the one of the simple ways to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon. MOF are known highly porous crystalline solids constructed from metal ions or clusters covalently linked by organic ligands. The tunability of their composition, architecture, and properties has has led to advances in drug delivery, catalysis, sensors, optoelectronics, electrochemistry, gas separation and gas adsorption. Although many studies have been reported that M-N-C catalysts have better performance than Pt catalysts, but most have been reported in alkaline media, and Fe-N-C catalysts have been mainly studied in acidic media. Fe-N-C catalysts have excellent performance; the new M-N-C catalyst should be replaced as it is less stable due to the fenton reaction. In this study, we report the synthesis of a melamine-encapsulated Co-ZnO-C composite as a precursor and template for zeolite-imidazole-frameworks (ZIF-8). This approach allows formation of Co-N-C for constructing unique structures at meso- and macropore scales, while maintaining microporosity. Density functional theory analysis confirms the superior stability of the Co-N-C catalyst over other M-N-C catalysts (M = Fe, Ni, Cr, and Mn). The Co-NC catalyst with a developed pore structure shows remarkable durability (6.7 % performance degradation for 100 h) and full cell performance in H 2 /O 2 under 1 bar of backpressure (723 mW/cm 2 of maximum power density).

Abstract:Fe-N-C materials have been shown as promising non-precious electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the activity as well as the durability in acidic electrolytes is still far from satisfactory. Herein, a dual metal (Fe, Ni)-nitrogen-doped carbon (FeNi-NC) was prepared by pyrolysis of Fe, Ni co-doped ZIF-8. The FeNi0.25-NC catalyst exhibits a comparable activity for the ORR to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, with the half-wave potential at 0.79 VRHE in HClO4 and 0.86 VRHE in NaOH electrolyte. Especially, FeNi0.25-NC shows excellent ORR activity in phosphorous acid electrolyte superior to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, owing to the excellent tolerance of the Fe, Ni active sites to phosphate anions. The systematic investigation manifests that Ni plays a double role in improving the ORR activity and stability of Fe-N-C. One side, Ni-N and Fe-N moieties synergistically boost the ORR especially in the high ORR overpotential region, and another side, Ni acts as a catalyst during the high temperature carbonization process to promote graphitization and increase the stability of the FeNi-N-C catalyst. It is demonstrated that the MOF-derived dual metal (Fe, Ni) -nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst (FeNi-NC) has a great potential application in both fuel cells and metal-air batteries. This work provides an effective dual-metal strategy in modulating both the activity and stability of the M-N-C catalysts for the ORR in acidic electrolytes.

Abstract:A family of mesoporous nonprecious metal (NPM) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media, including cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon (C-N-Co) and iron-nitrogen-doped carbon (C-N-Fe), was prepared from vitamin B12 (VB12) and the polyaniline-Fe (PANI-Fe) complex, respectively. Silica nanoparticles, ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15, and montmorillonite were used as templates for achieving mesoporous structures. The most active mesoporous catalyst was fabricated from VB12 and silica nanoparticles and exhibited a remarkable ORR activity in acidic medium (half-wave potential of 0.79 V, only ∼58 mV deviation from Pt/C), high selectivity (electron-transfer number >3.95), and excellent electrochemical stability (only 9 mV negative shift of half-wave potential after 10,000 potential cycles). The unprecedented performance of these NPM catalysts in ORR was attributed to their well-defined porous structures with a narrow mesopore size distribution, high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (up to 572 m(2)/g), and homogeneous distribution of abundant metal-Nx active sites.
