Abstract:One of the most important and topical challenges of quantum circuits is their scalability. Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) technology is at the forefront of replacing current standard CMOS-based control architectures for a number of applications, including quantum computing and quantum sensor arrays. By condensing the control and readout to SFQ-based on-chip devices that are directly connected to the quantum systems, it is possible to minimise the total system overhead, improving scalability and integration. In this work, we present a novel RSFQ device that generates multi tone digital signals, based on complex pulse train sequences using a Circular Shift Register (CSR) and a comb filter stage. We show that the frequency spectrum of the pulse trains is dependent on a preloaded pattern on the CSR, as well as on the delay line of the comb filter stage. By carefully selecting both the pattern and delay, the desired tones can be isolated and amplified as required. Finally, we propose architectures where this device can be implemented to control and readout arrays of quantum devices, such as qubits and single photon detectors.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum technologies is an emerging field of physics and engineering based on exploiting properties of quantum mechanics such as entanglement, superposition, or tunneling, and which is expected to impact many applications, such as communications, simulation, computation, or sensing and metrology. The operation of quantum technologies is based on the manipulation of the quantum states of certain devices, either to induce transitions between states or to detect the transitions. Irrespective of the practical realization of these quantum devices, their manipulation requires interacting with their quantum resonant states, for which very narrow radio‐frequency (RF) bursts in the range of the GHz are required. Arbitrary waveform generators are used to generate these signals for test purposes, but this is not suitable for practical quantum technology applications, which will need to produce the required bursts by specific circuit building blocks with low power and small dimensions. Here, an integrated RF burst generator capable of producing GHz bursts shorter than 1 ns is presented. The proposed architecture is tested using a 5 GHz quadrature LC‐tank voltage‐controlled oscillator (LC‐VCO), showing that the four equally spaced phases can be switched every 500 ps, which allows the generation of more complex RF bursts for optimized quantum state manipulation.

Scalable photonic platform for real-time quantum reservoir computing

Abstract:Quantum Reservoir Computing (QRC) exploits the information processing capabilities of quantum systems to solve non-trivial temporal tasks, improving over their classical counterparts. Recent progress has shown the potential of QRC exploiting the enlarged Hilbert space, but real-time processing and the achievement of a quantum advantage with efficient use of resources are prominent challenges towards viable experimental realizations. In this work, we propose a photonic platform suitable for real-time QRC based on a physical ensemble of reservoirs in the form of identical optical pulses recirculating through a closed loop. While ideal operation achieves maximum capacities, statistical noise is shown to undermine a quantum advantage. We propose a strategy to overcome this limitation and sustain the QRC performance when the size of the system is scaled up. The platform is conceived for experimental implementations to be viable with current technology.

Abstract:With high integration density and excellent optical properties,silicon photonics is becoming a promising platform for complete integration and large-scale optical quantum information processing.Scalable quantum information applications need photon generation and detection to be integrated on the same chip,and we have seen that various devices on the silicon photonic chip have been developed for this goal.This paper reviews the relevant research results and state-of-the-art technologies on the silicon photonic chip for scalable quantum ap-plications.Despite the shortcomings,the properties of some components have already met the requirements for further expansion.Furthermore,we point out the challenges ahead and future research directions for on-chip scalable quantum information applications.

Abstract:For superconducting quantum processors, microwave signals are delivered to each qubit from room-temperature electronics to the cryogenic environment through coaxial cables. Limited by the heat load of cabling and the massive cost of electronics, such an architecture is not viable for millions of qubits required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Monolithic integration of the control electronics and the qubits provides a promising solution, which, however, requires a coherent cryogenic microwave pulse generator that is compatible with superconducting quantum circuits. Here, we report such a signal source driven by digital-like signals, generating pulsed microwave emission with well-controlled phase, intensity, and frequency directly at millikelvin temperatures. We showcase high-fidelity readout of superconducting qubits with the microwave pulse generator. The device demonstrated here has a small footprint, negligible heat load, great flexibility to operate, and is fully compatible with today's superconducting quantum circuits, thus providing an enabling technology for large-scale superconducting quantum computers.

Abstract:This paper proposes a cost-effective architecture for an RF pulse generator for superconducting qubits. Most existing works use arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs) that require both a large amount of high-bandwidth memories and high-performance analog circuits to achieve the highest gate fidelity with an optimized RF pulse waveform. The proposed pulse generator architecture significantly simplifies both the generator circuit and the waveform of the RF pulse to a cost-aware square pulses. This architecture eliminates the requirement for power- and cost-intensive AWG, a major obstacle in realizing scalable quantum computers. Additionally, this paper proposes a process to optimize pulse waveforms to maximize fidelity of gate operations for single and multiple qubits. Quantum dynamics simulation of transmon qubits, wherein the state of system evolves with time, demonstrates that our pulse generator can achieve practically the same gate fidelity as ideal RF pulses, while substantially reducing the performance requirements of memory and analog circuits.

Abstract:Whilst holding great promise for low noise, ease of operation and networking, useful photonic quantum computing has been precluded by the need for beyond-state-of-the-art components, manufactured by the millions. Here we introduce a manufacturable platform for quantum computing with photons. We benchmark a set of monolithically-integrated silicon photonics-based modules to generate, manipulate, network, and detect photonic qubits, demonstrating dual-rail photonic qubits with $99.98\% \pm 0.01\%$ state preparation and measurement fidelity, Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference between independent photon sources with $99.50\%\pm0.25\%$ visibility, two-qubit fusion with $99.22\%\pm0.12\%$ fidelity, and a chip-to-chip qubit interconnect with $99.72\%\pm0.04\%$ fidelity, not accounting for loss. In addition, we preview a selection of next generation technologies, demonstrating low-loss silicon nitride waveguides and components, fabrication-tolerant photon sources, high-efficiency photon-number-resolving detectors, low-loss chip-to-fiber coupling, and barium titanate electro-optic phase shifters.

Abstract:The design of a USB -based 16 -channel programmable quasi -Gaussian pulse generator is de-scribed in this paper .A high-speed analog switch circuit is used to generate the analog pulse signal and digital-to-analog converter ( DAC) adjusts the amplitude of the pulse signal .A shaping circuit , composed of RC networks and operational amplifiers , decides the signal′s rise and fall time .Control of analog switch′s trigger and DAC′s output is programed by a field -programmable -gate-array ( FPGA).Using a USB interface to communicate with the PC , the pulse generator can output 16-channel quasi -Gaussian pulse signals .Accord-ing to the test results , the pulse generator has been proven to function well .The output pulse amplitude is ad-justable.All channels have good output uniformities , and its integral nonlinearity ( INL) is less than 0.7%. The pulse generator can be used for test of large particle physics experiment ′s front-end electronics , such as calibration , scale correction and system monitor .

Abstract:Fast measurements of quantum devices is important in areas such as quantum sensing, quantum computing and nanodevice quality analysis. Here, we develop a superconductor-semiconductor multi-module microwave assembly to demonstrate charge state readout at the state-of-the-art. The assembly consist of a superconducting readout resonator interfaced to a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chiplet containing quantum dots (QDs) in a high-$\kappa$ nanowire transistor. The superconducting chiplet contains resonant and coupling elements as well as $LC$ filters that, when interfaced with the silicon chip, result in a resonant frequency $f=2.12$ GHz, a loaded quality factor $Q=850$, and a resonator impedance $Z=470$ $\Omega$. Combined with the large gate lever arms of SOI technology, we achieve a minimum integration time for single and double QD transitions of 2.77 ns and 13.5 ns, respectively. We utilize the assembly to measure charge noise over 9 decades of frequency up to 500 kHz and find a 1/$f$ dependence across the whole frequency spectrum as well as a charge noise level of 4 $\mu$eV/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz. The modular microwave circuitry presented here can be directly utilized in conjunction with other quantum device to improve the readout performance as well as enable large bandwidth noise spectroscopy, all without the complexity of superconductor-semiconductor monolithic fabrication.

Abstract:Superconducting quantum processors are manufactured based on a semiconductor process, which makes qubit integration possible. At the same time, this kind of qubit exhibits high-performance fidelity and decoherence time and requires a programmable arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). This paper presents the implementation of an AWG with a sampling rate of two-gigabit samples per second as well as 16-bit vertical resolution digital-to-analog converters. The AWGs are designed for a scaled-up usage scenario by integrating them with separate microwave devices onto a single backplane. A special waveform sequence output controller is designed to realize seamless waveform switching and arbitrary waveform generation. The jitter of multiple AWG channels is around 10 ps, and the integral nonlinearity and differential nonlinearity are both about 2 least significant bits. This customizable AWG has been used in several superconducting quantum processors, and the result of multiple qubits’ measurement verifies that the AWG is qualified for controlling tens of superconducting qubits.
Compact Pulse Schedules for High-Fidelity Single-Flux Quantum Qubit Control

Abstract:In the traditional approach to controlling superconducting qubits using microwave pulses, the field of pulse shaping has emerged in order to assist in the removal of leakage and increase gate fidelity. However, the challenge of scaling microwave control electronics has created an opportunity to explore alternative methods such as single-flux quantum (SFQ) pulses. For qubits controlled by SFQ pulses, high fidelity gates can be achieved by optimizing the binary control sequence. We extend the notion of the derivative removal by adiabatic gate (DRAG) framework a transmon qubit controlled by SFQ drivers and propose pulse sequences that can be stored in 22 bits or fewer, with gate fidelities exceeding 99.99%. This modest memory requirement could help reduce the footprint of the SFQ coprocessors and power dissipation while preserving their inherent advantages of scalability and cost-effectiveness.

Abstract:A highly integrated, high performance, and re-configurable device, which is designed for the Nitrogen-Vacancy center based quantum applications, is reported. The digital compartment of the device is fully implemented in a Field-Programmable-Gate- Array. The digital compartment is designed to manage the multi-function digital waveform generation and the Time-to-Digital-Convertors. The device provides two Arbitrary-Waveform-Generator channels which operate at a 1 Gsps sampling rate with a maximum bandwidth of 500 MHz. There are twelve pulse channels integrated in the device with a 50 ps time resolution in both duration and delay. The pulse channels operate with the 3.3 V Transistor-Transistor logic. The FPGA-based Timeto- Digital-Convertor provides a 23-ps time measurement precision. A data accumulation module, which can record the input count rate and the distributions of the time measurement, is also available. A Digital-to-Analog-Convertor board is implemented as the analog compartment, which converts the digital waveforms to analog signals with 500 MHz low-pass-filters. All the input and output channels of the device are equipped with 50 Sub-Miniature version A termination. The hardware design is modularized thus it can be easily upgraded with compatible components. The device is suitable to be applied in the quantum technologies based on the N-V centers, as well as in other quantum solid state systems, such as quantum dots, phosphorus doped in silicon and defect spins in silicon carbide.

Simple, High Saturation Power, Quantum-limited, RF SQUID Array-based Josephson Parametric Amplifiers

Abstract:High-fidelity quantum non-demolition qubit measurement is critical to error correction and rapid qubit feedback in large-scale quantum computing. High-fidelity readout requires passing a short and strong pulse through the qubit's readout resonator, which is then processed by a sufficiently high bandwidth, high saturation power, and quantum-limited amplifier. We have developed a design pipeline that combines time-domain simulation of the un-truncated device Hamiltonian, fabrication constraints, and maximization of saturation power. We have realized an amplifier based on a modified NIST tri-layer Nb fabrication suite which utilizes an array of 25 radio frequency Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (rf SQUIDs) embedded within a low-Q resonator powered by a high-power voltage pump delivered via a diplexer on the signal port. We show that, despite the intensity of the pump, the device is quantum-efficient and capable of high-fidelity measurement limited by state transitions in the transmon. We present experimental data demonstrating up to -91.2 dBm input saturation power with 20 dB gain, up to 28 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, and phase-preserving qubit measurements with 62% quantum efficiency.

A multi-module silicon-on-insulator chip assembly containing quantum dots and cryogenic radio-frequency readout electronics

Abstract:Quantum processing units will be modules of larger information processing systems containing also digital and analog electronics modules. Silicon-based quantum computing offers the enticing opportunity to manufacture all the modules using the same technology platform. Here, we present a cryogenic multi-module assembly for multiplexed readout of silicon quantum devices where all modules have been fabricated using the same fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) CMOS process. The assembly is constituted by three chiplets: (i) a low-noise amplifier (LNA), (ii) a single-pole eight-throw switch (SP8T), and (iii) a silicon quantum dot (QD) array. We integrate the chiplets into modules and show respectively, (i) a peak gain over 35dB with a 3dB bandwidth from 709MHz to 827MHz and an average noise temperature of 6.2K (minimum 4.2K), (ii) an insertion loss smaller than 1.1dB and a noise temperature less than 1.1K over the 0-2GHz range, and (iii) single-electron box (SEB) charge sensors. Finally, we combine all modules into a single demonstration showing time-domain radio-frequency multiplexing of two SEBs paving the way to an all-silicon quantum computing system.

Abstract:Photonic integrated circuits hold great promise in enabling the practical wide-scale deployment of quantum communications; however, despite impressive experiments of component functionality, a fully operational quantum communication system using photonic chips is yet to be demonstrated. Here we demonstrate an entirely standalone secure communication system based on photonic integrated circuits—assembled into compact modules—for quantum random number generation and quantum key distribution at gigahertz clock rates. The bit values, basis selection and decoy pulse intensities used for quantum key distribution are chosen at random, and are based on the output of a chip-based quantum random number generator operating at 4 Gb s–1. Error correction and privacy amplification are performed in real time to produce information-theoretic secure keys for a 100 Gb s–1 line speed data encryption system. We demonstrate long-term continuous operation of the quantum secured communication system using feedback controls to stabilize the qubit phase and propagation delay over metropolitan fibre lengths. These results mark an important milestone for the realistic deployment of quantum communications based on quantum photonic chips.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration of using the Quantum Instrumentation and Control Kit (QICK) system on RFSoCFPGA technology to drive an entangled photon pair source and to detect the photon signals. With the QICK system, we achieve high levels of performance metrics including coincidence-to-accidental ratio exceeding 150, and entanglement visibility exceeding 95%, consistent with performance metrics achieved using conventional waveform generators. We also demonstrate simultaneous detector readout using the digitization functional of QICK, achieving internal system synchronization time resolution of 3.2 ps. The work reported in this paper represents an explicit demonstration of the feasibility for replacing commercial waveform generators and time taggers with RFSoC-FPGA technology in the operation of a quantum network, representing a cost reduction of more than an order of magnitude.

sQueeze: Accelerated Quantum Pulse Schedules

Abstract:Quantum devices in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era are limited by high error rates and short decoherence times. Typically, compiler optimisations have provided solutions at the gate level. Alternatively, we exploit the finest level of quantum control and introduce a set of pulse level quantum compiler optimisations: sQueeze. Instead of relying on existing calibration that may be inaccurate, we provide a method for the live calibration of two new parameterised basis gates $R_{x}(\theta)$ and $R_{zx}(\theta)$ using an external server. We validate our techniques using the IBM quantum devices and the OpenPulse control interface over more than 8 billion shots. The $R_{x}(\theta)$ gates are on average 52.7% more accurate than their current native Qiskit decompositions, while $R_{zx}(\theta)$ are 22.6% more accurate on average. These more accurate pulses also provide up to a 4.1$\times$ speed-up for single-qubit operations and 3.1$\times$ speed-up for two-qubit gates. Then sQueeze demonstrates up to a 39.6% improvement in the fidelity of quantum benchmark algorithms compared to conventional approaches.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) has convincingly been proven compatible with real life applications. Its wide-scale deployment in optical networks will benefit from an optical platform that allows miniature devices capable of encoding the necessarily complex signals at high rates and with low power consumption. While photonic integration is the ideal route toward miniaturisation, an efficient route to high-speed encoding of the quantum phase states on chip is still missing. Consequently, current devices rely on bulky and high power demanding phase modulation elements which hinder the sought-after scalability and energy efficiency. Here we exploit a novel approach to high-speed phase encoding and demonstrate a compact, scalable and power efficient integrated quantum transmitter. We encode cryptographic keys on-demand in high repetition rate pulse streams using injection-locking with deterministic phase control at the seed laser. We demonstrate record secure-key-rates under multi-protocol operation. Our modulator-free transmitters enable the development of high-bit rate quantum communications devices, which will be essential for the practical integration of quantum key distribution in high connectivity networks.
