Abstract:Flow in single fractures is the fundamental study on seepage in fractured rock masses. The Cubic Law can just describe flow in a single smooth fracture. However, when the fracture is rough, the law has to be revised. The joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is commonly used to describe the rough surface of rock. Therefore, in this paper, the correlation between fracture permeability and JRC is discussed through numerical simulation. First, images of ten typical JRC profiles are digitized. Numerical models of JRC single fractures are established with different apertures ranging from 0.1 mm to 5.0 mm. Then, the flow fields in the fractures are calculated by computational fluid dynamics based ontheNavier-Stokes equation and the laminar model. The numerical results show that there is a great correlation between the permeability and JRC, which is summarized into several equations. Generally, the permeability decreases while the JRC increases. In the low Reynolds number (Re < 10) situations, the correlation between permeability and JRC is simple and certain. However, when Re is greater than 10, the correlation becomes complex. Using the equations, we can easily predict the permeability by JRC.
