Abstract:Virtual network technique provides an effective way to crack with the “ossification” problem of current network. How to construct a QoS guaranteed virtual network is an essential concern of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). In this paper, we propose an algorithm (VNE-DC) based on multi-agent approach to embed virtual networks onto a substrate network with delay constraints. Previous work has implemented virtual network embedding via allocating substrate resources (nodes capacity and links bandwidth) with various strategies. However, these resource priority strategies usually introduce an unnecessary waste of substrate resources. We aim to map virtual links onto substrate paths with minimum bandwidth cost while keeping the delay constraints. Simulation results show that VNE-DC can achieve an excellent performance in average bandwidth cost, and guarantee the accept ratio at the same time.
Embedding Algorithm for Virtualizing Content-Centric Networks in a Shared Substrate

Abstract:Network virtualization enables diversified network architectures to coexist in a substrate network. Content-centric network (CCN), as one of the major proposals for the future network, can be deployed in the virtualized environment. However, the recent work that has attempted in this direction has not addressed issues concerning the unique resource usage of CCN in resource allocations during the embedding procedure when instantiating a virtual CCN (VCCN). The unique problem is the cache component, i.e., the content store, in CCN. This paper will develop a VCCN Mapping Algorithm (VCCNMA) that optimizes the performances of VCCN considering the content store request in addition to CPU and bandwidth. Since the resource allocation problem is NP-hard, this paper thus proposes a heuristic algorithm. Several sets of simulation experiments are performed to evaluate the acceptance ratio, the network cost, the storage utilization ratio and load balance. Results show that the algorithm can achieve better performances. Moreover, the paper also studies the tradeoffs between the network cost and the load balance.

Abstract:Providing services on demand is a major contributing factor to drive the increasingly development of the software defined network. However, it should supply all the current popular applications before it really attains widespread development. Multiple Description Coding (MDC) video applications, as a popular application in the current network, should be reasonably supported in this novel network virtualization environment. In this paper, we address this issue to assign MDC video application into virtual networks with an efficient centralized algorithm (CAMDV). Since this problem is an NP-hard problem, we design an algorithm that can effectively balance the user satisfaction and network resource cost. Previous work just builds a global multicast tree for each description to connect all the destination nodes by breadth-first search strategy or shortest path tree algorithm. But those methods could not achieve an optimal balance or a high-level user satisfaction. By introducing the hierarchical clustering scheme, our algorithm decomposes the whole mapping procedure into multicast tree construction and multipath description distribution. A serial of simulation experiments show that our centralized algorithm could achieve a better performance in balancing the user satisfaction and average mapping cost in comparison with its rivals.

Abstract:This paper introduces the problem of virtual network mapping on network virtualization technology,reviews the previous studies and analyzes the shortage of existing mapping algorithms.A new mapping algorithm PBMC is proposed,which is based on path based multi-commodity problem model to resolve the problem of hop count limit and network resource distribution balance.Simulation results indicate that compared with traditional multi-commodity based algorithm,PBMC performs better in virtual network request acceptance ratio and resource utilization ratio.

Abstract:Network Virtualization can diversify the future Internet architecture into separate virtual networks according to different applications and requirements. Telecom operators adopt network virtualization technologies to design virtual networks to meet users' requirements and achieve high efficiency, low cost, controllability, etc. Previous researches focus on virtual networks construction based on restriction conditions of link bandwidth or optimal topology design for virtual network. In this paper we propose a multi-commodity flow model to design virtual networks based on virtual router. We then define the load of node as a parameter, based on comprehensive consideration of node's capacity and load balance. We validate the effectiveness of our algorithm through simulation. Simulation experiments show that the proposed algorithm is a good solution to the problem of virtual networks construction and also improve load balance of the substrate networks.

Abstract:Network virtualization supports predicted network performance for applications by providing tenants with a virtual data center in multi-tenant data centers. The Hose model was recently extended for the virtual network abstraction and deployed in an Oktopus system, which offers the trade-off between cost and network performance. Embedding algorithms based on Oktopus model were well studied in the single-root tree topology. In this paper, we investigate congestion-aware allocation of virtual data centers in multipath networks. First, we formulate bandwidth constraints with linear programming, and provide a complete solution with exhaustive searching. Next, to reduce time complexity, we propose a perturbation algorithm to VM placement, which detects the bandwidth bottleneck of the current virtual machine placement and then adjusts the assignment to reduce congestion. The perturbation algorithm is compatible with both load-balanced and single-path routing algorithms. We compare the performance of the exhaustive searching algorithm and perturbation algorithm with load-balanced or single-path routing by simulations. The perturbation algorithm with load-balanced routing performs close to the exhaustive searching algorithm while significantly reduces the time complexity. Therefore, it offers a good tradeoff between time complexity and network performance.

Abstract:Virtualization is a common technology for resource sharing in data center. To make efficient use of data center resources, the key challenge is to map customer demands (modeled as virtual data center, VDC) to the physical data center effectively. In this paper, we focus on this problem. Distinct with previous works, our study of VDC embedding problem is under the assumption that switch resource is the bottleneck of data center networks (DCNs). To this end, we not only propose relative cost to evaluate embedding strategy, decouple embedding problem into VM placement with marginal resource assignment and virtual link mapping with decided source-destination based on the property of fat-tree, but also design the traffic aware embedding algorithm (TAE) and first fit virtual link mapping (FFLM) to map virtual data center requests to a physical data center. Simulation results show that TAE+FFLM could increase acceptance rate and reduce network cost (about 49% in the case) at the same time. The traffic aware embedding algorithm reduces the load of core-link traffic and brings the optimization opportunity for data center network energy conservation.

Abstract:Unbalanced distributions of traffic in the data center networks increase the network congestion.The special traffic characteristics in data center networks reduce the effectiveness of traditional IP network traffic engineering methods.This paper presents a dynamic routing algorithm based on multipath propagation (Dramp) using software defined for network/OpenFlow (SDN/OF)frameworks.This algorithm makes efficient use of multiple paths by redefining the degree of the critical link and solving an optimization problem using link weights.The objective is to reduce the overhead in the control plane for a fine-grained traffic balance for routing optimization in data center networks.This paper compares the Dramp algorithm with the equal-cost multipath (ECMP) and global first fit (GFF) routing algorithms on the Mininet simulation platform.The results show that Dramp gives the best performance;thus,Dramp is simpler and more practical for traffic engineering in data center networks.

Abstract:Data Center is a multifunctional infrastructure that consists of thousands of compute servers and network devices. The fat-tree topology is widely adopted because of its efficiency and safety. However, the fat-tree topology can not completely meet the time-varying communication needs from physical and virtual machines. 60 GHz wireless technology was then incorporated into data centers for its high speed transmission with low cost. It together with traditional wired network, can provide a stable and cheap transmission. This paper focuses on how to reduce the maximum load in such hybrid environments. Considering that only if we have deployed virtual machines can we arrange the transmission paths, we should complete these two steps in order. In this paper, we propose two algorithms to handle this problem. Our algorithms could handle both online and offline requests. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are able to greatly reduce the maximum load in hybrid data center networks with low time cost.

Abstract:Virtual data center (VDC) embedding along with designing for fault tolerance is a key problem that needs to be addressed while designing a data center. In this work we propose a new reliability-aware VDC embedding algorithm RAVDC that embeds VDC onto the physical servers while guaranteeing the reliability requirement of the VDC. The basic idea of this algorithm is to restrict the number of VMs which can be embedded onto the same physical server to guarantee the VDC reliability, and then reduce the bandwidth consumption as well as the energy consumption. We simulate our algorithm and compare it with existing VDC embedding solution using the fat tree topology. The simulation results show that compared with current VDC embedding algorithms, the proposed algorithm can satisfy VDC reliability requirement, and effectively reduce bandwidth consumption of data center by up to 30% without consuming extra energy.

Abstract:Predictable network performance is critical for cloud applications and can be achieved by providing tenants a dedicated virtual data center (VDC) with bandwidth guarantee. Recently, the extended Hose model was applied to the VDC abstraction to characterize the tradeoff between cost and network performance. The acceptability determination problem of a VDC with heterogeneous bandwidth demand was proved to be NP-complete, even in the simple tree topology. In this paper, we investigate the embedding problem for heterogeneous bandwidth VDC in substrate networks of general topology. The embedding problem involves two coupled sub-problems: virtual machine (VM) placement and multipath route assignment. First, we formulate the route assignment problem with linear programming to minimize the maximum link utilization, and provide K-widest path load-balanced routing with controllable splitting paths. Next, we propose a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm, referred to as the perturbation algorithm, for the VM placement. The perturbation algorithm is congestion-aware as it detects the bandwidth bottlenecks in the placement process and then selectively relocates some assigned VMs to eliminate congestion. Simulation results show that our algorithm performs better in comparison with the existing well-known algorithms: first-fit, next-fit, and greedy, and very close to the exponential-time complexity backtracking algorithm in typical data center network architectures. For the tree substrate network, the perturbation algorithm performs better than the allocation-range algorithm. For the homogeneous bandwidth VDC requests, the perturbation algorithm produces a higher success rate than the recently proposed HVC-ACE algorithm. Therefore, it provides a compromised solution between time complexity and network performance.

Abstract:As the advanced development of directional antenna, wireless technique has been introduced into data center networks, denoted as hybrid data center networks (HDCN). HDCN shows its great potential to mitigate the over-subscription problem in higher level links in traditional data centers.However, how to implement network virtualization in HDCN such that all the wireless links can be sufficiently utilized remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we study virtual network embedding problem in HDCN, by jointly considering embedding virtual networks and scheduling the directional antennas. We first summarize this problem intoan integer programming problem, then propose a heuristic algorithm to find a near optimal solution for the studied problem. The simulation based evaluation shows the great efficiency for the proposed algorithm deriving a suboptimal solution in HDCN.

Abstract:The goal of data center network is to interconnect the massive number of data center servers, and provide efficient and fault-tolerant routing service to upper-layer applications. To overcome the problem of tree architecture in current practice, many new network architectures are proposed, represented by Fat-Tree, BCube, and etc. A consistent theme in these new architectures is that a large number of network devices are used to achieve 1:1 oversubscription ratio. However, at most time, data center traffic is far below the peak value. The idle network devices will waste significant amount of energy, which is now a headache for many data center owners. In this paper, we discuss how to save energy consumption in high-density data center networks in a routing perspective. We call this kind of routing energy-aware routing. The key idea is to use as few network devices to provide the routing service as possible, with no/little sacrifice on the network performance. Meanwhile, the idle network devices can be shutdown or put into sleep mode for energy saving. We establish the model of energy-aware routing in data center network, and design a heuristic algorithm to achieve the idea. Our simulation in typical data center networks shows that energy-aware routing can effectively save power consumed by network devices.

Abstract:Cloud computing has become a cost-effective paradigm for deploying online service applications in large data centers in recent years. Virtualization technology enables flexible and efficient management of physical resources in cloud data centers and improves the resource utilization. A request for resources to a data center can be abstracted as a virtual data center (VDC) request. Due to the use of a large number of resources and at various locations, reliability is an important issue that should be addressed in large and multiple data centers. However, most research focuses on the problem of reliable VDC embedding in a single data center. In this paper, we study the problem of reliable VDC embedding across multiple data centers, such that the total bandwidth consumption in the inter-data center backbone network is minimized, while satisfying the reliability requirement of each VDC request. We model the problem by using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and propose a heuristic algorithm to address this NP-hard problem efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better in terms of lowering physical resource consumption and VDC request blocking ratio compared with existing solution.
Scalability and Bandwidth Optimization for Data Center Networks

Abstract:Data centers now being built may contain tens of thousands hosts, and this number is still growing. Deficiencies of the conventional network architecture are gradually revealed. It is facing a set of limitations such as poor scalability, resources fragmentation, lack of support for virtual machine migration and inefficient packets forwarding. In this paper, we propose an alternative solution which is more suitable for data center than the traditional structure. We redesign a large and scalable layer 2 network that supports VM migration better and removes resource fragmentation. We employ a global controller to maintain network information which can be accessed through a directory service running on the controller. With the directory service we achieve proxy ARP resolving and MAC-in-MAC tunneling while forwarding data frames. Moreover, we replace the shortest path first route algorithm with bandwidth-aware forwarding algorithm that dynamically adjusts route when overloaded link detected. The simulation results show that our approach can significantly increase the aggregate throughput and is more efficient.

Abstract:Multipath TCP (MPTCP) can significantly improve the performance of bulk data transfer in Data Center Networks (DCNs). To achieve this, an MPTCP flow wants each of its subflows to run on a different under-utilized path. Existing routing schemes fail to meet this requirement. we propose to dynamically construct disjoint paths for each MPTCP flow so as to fully utilize the path diversity of DCNs to achieve high data transfer performance. The simulations show that, compared to current practice, our scheme can increase goodputs by more than 60%.
