Abstract:Virtual machine technology is widely applied to modern data center for cloud computing as a key technology to realize energy-efficient operation of servers. Server consolidation achieves energy efficiency by enabling multiple instantiations of operating systems (OSes) to run simultaneously on a single physical machine. While, live migration of virtual machine can transfer the virtual machine workload from one physical machine to another without interrupting service. However, both the two technologies have their own performance overheads. There is a tradeoff between the performance and energy efficiency. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency from the performance perspective. Firstly, we present a virtual machine based energy-efficient data center architecture for cloud computing. Then we investigate the potential performance overheads caused by server consolidation and live migration of virtual machine technology. Experimental results show that both the two technologies can effectively implement energy-saving goals with little performance overheads. Efficient consolidation and migration strategies can improve the energy efficiency.

Abstract:Datacenters (DCs) are deployed in a large scale to support the ever increasing demand for data processing to support various applications. The energy consumption of DCs becomes a critical issue. Powering DCs with renewable energy can effectively reduce the brown energy consumption and thus alleviates the energy consumption problem. Owing to geographical deployments of DCs, the renewable energy generation and the data processing demands usually vary in different DCs. Migrating virtual machines (VMs) among DCs according to the availability of renewable energy helps match the energy demands and the renewable energy generation in DCs, and thus maximizes the utilization of renewable energy. Since migrating VMs incurs additional traffic in the network, the VM migration is constrained by the network capacity. The inter-datacenter (inter-DC) VM migration with network capacity constraints is an NP-hard problem. In this paper, we propose two heuristic algorithms that approximate the optimal VM migration solution. Through extensive simulations, we show that the proposed algorithms, by migrating VM among DCs, can reduce up to 31% of brown energy consumption.

Abstract:In the paradigm of cloud computing, multiple users can share the cloud infrastructure resources. The application or service requests from a user can be abstracted as a virtual network (VN) request and submitted to the cloud-based data centers. How to map a virtual network onto the cloud infrastructure network is a challenging issue in cloud resource provisioning. Current researches about virtual network mapping problem mainly focus on resource efficiency, which can be classified into resource efficient VN mapping or cost efficient VN mapping. However, the amount of power or energy consumed by data centers takes a large part of all of the power consumption. This may not only leads to a higher expenditure on the operation of data centers but also contribute to carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect. In this work we study the problem of power efficient virtual network mapping and propose a framework and algorithm for solving this problem. The simulation results show that our approach performs well.

Abstract:Live migration has been a significant tool to efficiently pack service into fewer physical servers while maintaining the service quality in data center, and thus provides considerable energy savings by reducing the amount of physical servers. Existed work mostly concentrates on the VM live migration mechanism to satisfy required performance level, however few investigates the energy-guided live migration. We propose a comprehensive approach to optimizing energy consumption by determining the best candidate of migrating virtual machine (VM) and the best candidate of destination physical machine (PM) for new increased workload and migrating VM in an energy cost efficient way, two models are established respectively to settle these two problems: energy aware migration model and load dispatching model. Furthermore, the co-migration that several VMs request live migration simultaneously is discussed and a corresponding heuristic algorithm is developed and evaluated, this paper we believe is the first kind of work to deal with the co-migration decision making in terms of both performance and energy saving. We implement this approach based on Xen 3.4 platform and conduct several experiments which demonstrate that our approach can achieve significant energy saving.

Abstract:Energy efficiency of cloud computing attracts a great deal of attention recently more than ever. In this paper, based on the characteristics of virtual cloud environment and MapReduce workload, an energy-efficient VM placement is presented. The method involves two algorithms: Tight Recipe Packing (TRP) and Virtual Cluster Scaling (VCS). TRP aims at minimizing an energy consumption and making trade-off between VM duration and resource utilization, so that data center can place the VMs in request to the least amount of physical servers. VCS further enhances capacity utilization of active physical servers while reducing the energy consumption, which can work together as a complement with other existing placement algorithms. In addition, an estimation method is proposed to predict the completion time of a running MapReduce job. The experimental results both in simulation and Hadoop test bed show that our approach achieves greater energy savings over existing algorithms.

Abstract:Data centers can provide users with reliable and on-demand cloud services. Efficient virtual machine allocation strategies are important for improving data center performance and increasing allocation efficiency. However, the existing allocation algorithms have limited consideration for the communication delay between virtual machines caused by the data center topology. Therefore, this study formalizes the network communication problem of virtual machines in data centers by studying these centers network topology. Accordingly, this paper proposes an energy saving allocation algorithm based on communication-aware, called ESBCA, which optimizes the data center traffic from the two stages of virtual machine migration and placement. In the migration phase, virtual machines with high traffic volumes are preferred to be migrated. In the placement stage, different targets are set and the destination physical machine is systematically determined. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm evidently reduces the data traffic, improves the efficiency of the data center migration and decreases the energy consumption of data centers.

Abstract:Virtualization has achieved widespread adoption in various fields. As one of the most significant technologies in network virtualization, an effective virtual machine placement can facilitate to improve resource utilization in data center networks and cut down the enterprises' operation cost. In this paper, we proposed an energy efficient virtual machine placement scheme, which pursued to reduce communication cost and power consumption over traffic-aware data center networks. To solve such an optimization problem, an improved ant colony optimization with adaptive parameter setting was presented to balance its fast convergence and robust search capability. Compared with existing algorithms, simulation results demonstrated that our scheme achieved improvements in power consumption and communication cost, and had a significant reduction in run time under different traffic patterns and configurations.

Powering DCs with renewable energy can effectively reduce the brown energy consumption. Owing to geographically distributed deployment of DCs, the renewable energy generation and the data processing demands usually vary in different DCs. Migrating virtual machines (VMs) among DCs according to the availability of renewable energy helps match the energy demands and the renewable energy generation in DCs, and thus maximizes the utilization of renewable energy. We first elicit the renewable energy-aware inter-datacenter (inter-DC) VM migration problem in an inter-DC network over the elastic optical infrastructure, present it as a many-manycast communications problem, and then formulate it as an integer linear programming problem. The objective is to minimize the total cost of the brown energy consumption of DCs in such inter-DC network via VM migration. We use CVX and Gurobi to solve this problem for small network configurations, and we propose a few heuristic algorithms that approximate the optimal solution for large network configurations. Through extensive simulations, we show that the proposed algorithms, by migrating VM among DCs, can reduce up to 19.7% cost of the brown energy consumption.

Abstract:Energy efficiency has recently become a major issue in large data centers. Virtual machine placement (VMP) problem plays an important role in virtualized datacenters. Virtual machine (VM) migration with efficient placement schemes enables effective physical machines (PMs) consolidation to promote the utilization level of servers. Low utilization of physical server is the main reason result to the energy inefficiency. Aimed to promote the utilization of servers, VM migration technology is used to realize the server consolidation and minimize the lower utilized servers and switch idle servers to energy saving mode. Secondly, a novel and effective VM allocation policy based on resource-aware utility model is proposed to improve the consolidation efficiency. Finally, a resource manage prototype framework is setup, and CloudSim is chosen as the testbed to evaluate the policy's performance with the real workload data collected from the PlanetLab project. Experiments results validated our proposed policy effectiveness on substantial energy savings.
Virtual Machine Scheduling Considering Both Computing and Cooling Energy

Abstract:The problem of high energy consumption of data centres has become increasingly serious. Computing and cooling energy are the most significant parts. On one hand, as the energy consumption of under-utilized resources accounts for a substantial amount of the actual energy draw, load consolidation is widely used for reducing computing energy by increasing resource utilization. On the other hand, to avoid the hot spots, which increase the requirement of cooling capacity and reduce cooling efficiency, load balance is often adopted for better thermal management. These two approaches are contradict with each other. This paper explores the trade off between load consolidation and balance. Our proposed policy Dart Scheduler selects genetic algorithm to generate a near optimum scheduling solution. The results show that, in most cases, our approach can significantly reduce the total energy consumption comparing with the other baseline algorithms. Further, the time cost for Dart Scheduler is tolerable for online deployment and scheduling.
An Efficient Power-Aware Resource Scheduling Strategy in Virtualized Datacenters

Abstract:In the era of cloud computing, data centers are well-known to be bounded by the power wall issue. This issue lowers the profit of service providers and obstructs the expansions of data center's scale. As virtual machine's behavior was not explored sufficiently in classic data center's power-saving strategies, in this paper we address the power consumption issue in the setting of a virtualized data center. We propose an efficient power-aware resource scheduling strategy that reduces data center's power consumption effectively based on VM live migration which is a key technical feature of cloud computing. Our scheduling algorithm leverages the Xen platform and consolidates VM workloads periodically to reduce the number of running servers. To satisfy each VM's service level agreements, our strategy keeps adjusting VM placements between scheduling rounds. We developed a power-aware data center simulator to test our algorithm. The simulator runs in time domain and includes server's segmented linear power model. We validated our simulator using measured server power trace. Our simulation shows that compared with event-driven schedulers, our strategy improves data center power budget by 35% for random workloads resembling web-requests, and improve data center power budget by 22.7% for workloads exhibiting stable resource requirements like ScaLAPACK.

Abstract:As energy-intensive infrastructures, data centers (DCs) have become a pressing challenge for managers due to their significant energy consumption and carbon emissions. Information technology (IT) and cooling systems contribute the most to energy consumption. Energy-aware virtual machine (VM) scheduling methods have been widely demonstrated to reduce energy consumption and operating costs in DCs. However, as realistic DCs exhibit complex power and thermodynamic behaviors, existing works cannot provide efficient measures to optimize computing and cooling power consumption simultaneously. To overcome this challenge, we construct a holistic thermal model (including CPU and server inlet thermal models) to accurately represent the non-uniform, dynamic thermal environment. Subsequently, this work proposes a thermal model-based energy-aware VM placement method (TEVP) to minimize the holistic energy consumption of the DCs, considering resource and thermal constraints. We develop a novel hybrid swarm intelligence algorithm (DE-ERPSO) combining differential evolution (DE) and particle swarm optimization with an elite re-selection mechanism (ERPSO) to explore more energy-efficient VM placement schemes. Extensive experiments are conducted on an extended CloudSim to validate the performance of the proposed TEVP using real-world workload traces (PlanetLab and Azure). Results show that TEVP saves over 5.6% of the total energy consumption over the advanced baselines while maintaining low thermal violations.

Abstract:We proposed a virtual machine migration method for multiple data centers, as it related to the energy consumption and service quality of multiple data centers. The cloud computing center can dynamically respond to various needs, schedule computing resources, and provide users with convenient IT services. As the demand for cloud computing services continues to increase, the scale of the data center is getting larger and larger, and the problem of high energy consumption of equipment is becoming more and more prominent. Therefore, building a green data center is key to ensuring the development of the technology industry. Virtual machine online migration technology has been widely used in energy consumption management, which plays an important role in the energy‐saving management of large‐scale data centers. Considering the problem of energy consumption in a multi‐data center environment, a cross‐data center virtual machine migration strategy is proposed, EVMA. First, the target data center of the virtual machine migration is determined according to the bandwidth between data centers, and then the overload host and virtual machine selection strategy is determined according to the historical CPU load. The experimental results showed that the algorithm had a good performance in reducing the energy consumption of the data center and ensuring the quality of service.

Energy-Aware Lease Scheduling in Virtualized Data Centers

Abstract:Energy efficiency has become an important measurement of scheduling algorithms in virtualized data centers. One of the challenges of energy-efficient scheduling algorithms, however, is the trade-off between minimizing energy consumption and satisfying quality of service (e.g. performance, resource availability on time for reservation requests). We consider resource needs in the context of virtualized data centers of a private cloud system, which provides resource leases in terms of virtual machines (VMs) for user applications. In this paper, we propose heuristics for scheduling VMs that address the above challenge. On performance evaluation, simulated results have shown a significant reduction on total energy consumption of our proposed algorithms compared with an existing First-Come-First-Serve (FCFS) scheduling algorithm with the same fulfillment of performance requirements. We also discuss the improvement of energy saving when additionally using migration policies to the above mentioned algorithms.

Traffic-aware VDC Embedding in Data Center: A Case Study of Fattree

Abstract:Virtualization is a common technology for resource sharing in data center. To make efficient use of data center resources, the key challenge is to map customer demands (modeled as virtual data center, VDC) to the physical data center effectively. In this paper, we focus on this problem. Distinct with previous works, our study of VDC embedding problem is under the assumption that switch resource is the bottleneck of data center networks (DCNs). To this end, we not only propose relative cost to evaluate embedding strategy, decouple embedding problem into VM placement with marginal resource assignment and virtual link mapping with decided source-destination based on the property of fat-tree, but also design the traffic aware embedding algorithm (TAE) and first fit virtual link mapping (FFLM) to map virtual data center requests to a physical data center. Simulation results show that TAE+FFLM could increase acceptance rate and reduce network cost (about 49% in the case) at the same time. The traffic aware embedding algorithm reduces the load of core-link traffic and brings the optimization opportunity for data center network energy conservation.

Abstract:Since power is one of the major limiting factors for a data center or for large cluster growth, the objective of this study is to minimize the power consumption of the cluster without violating the performance constraints of the applications. We propose a runtime virtual machine (VM) mapping framework in a cluster or data center to save energy. The new framework can make reconfiguration decisions on time with the consideration of a low influence on the performance. In the GreenMap framework, one probabilistic, heuristic algorithm is designed for the optimization problem: mapping VMs onto a set of physical machines (PMs) under the constraint of multi-dimensional resource consumptions. Experimental measurements show that the new method can reduce the power consumption by up to 69.2% over base, with few performance penalties. The effectiveness and performance insights are also analytically verified.

Abstract:In this paper, we developed a dynamic energy-efficient virtual machine (VM) migration and consolidation algorithm based on a multi-resource energy-efficient model. It can minimize energy consumption with Quality of Service guarantee. In our algorithm, we designed a method of double threshold with multi-resource utilization to trigger the migration of VMs. The Modified Particle Swarm Optimization method is introduced into the consolidation of VMs to avoid falling into local optima which is a common defect in traditional heuristic algorithms. Comparing with the popular traditional heuristic algorithm Modified Best Fit Decrease, our algorithm reduced the number of active physical nodes and the amount of VMs migrations. It shows better energy efficiency in data center for cloud computing.

Abstract:In a data center, virtual machine consolidation has been proposed to improve the resource utilization and energy efficiency. An effective and efficient virtual machine consolidation method should achieve an appropriate balance among multiple goals, including guaranteeing service quality, reducing energy consumption and maximizing resource utilization. This problem is a multi-objective optimization problem with multiple resource constraints. To solve this problem, we propose an energy-aware dynamic virtual machine consolidation (EC-VMC) method that migrates virtual machines while satisfying constraints on the probabilities of multiple types of resources being overloaded. In our method, a series of algorithms for selecting and placing virtual machines to be migrated are utilized, with constraints on the probabilities of various resources in a physical machine being overloaded. Our algorithms integrate and cooperate similarly to artificial bee colony foraging behavior to perform an optimized search for the mapping relation between virtual machines and physical machines for consolidation. Extensive simulation is conducted to compare our EC-VMC method with previous virtual machine consolidation methods. The simulation results demonstrate that the EC-VMC method effectively overcomes the deficiencies of some existing heuristic algorithms and is highly effective in reducing VM migrations and energy consumption of data centers and in improving QoS.

Abstract:Virtualization is a key technology for resource sharing in IaaS/PaaS cloud infrastructures. One primary issue in virtualization is the virtual machine placement (VMP) problem, which is to choose proper physical machine (PM) to deploy virtual machines (VMs) in runtime. In this paper, we study the VMP problem with the goal of minimizing the total energy consumption. We first present a multi-dimensional space partition model to characterize the resource usage states of PMs. Based on this model, we then propose a virtual machine placement algorithm, which can balance the utilization of multi-dimensional resources, reduce the number of running PMs and thus lower down the energy consumption. We also evaluate our proposed balanced algorithm via extensive simulations. Simulation results show that our approach can save as much as 15% energy compared to the first fit algorithm over a long run.
