Abstract:A compact 120deg hybrid bend sandwiched by two low-index trenches and embedded in photonic crystal is designed and fabricated. The simulation results show that the hybrid bend is efficient and has large high-transmission bandwidth.

Abstract:We employ a plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method in combination with a Bloch-mode scattering model to scrutinize the optical performance of an ultracompact photonic crystal (PC) all-pass optical filter made from a single-mode PC waveguide side coupled with latitudinal optical microcavities. A series of geometrical configurations of resonant microcavities side coupled with the PC waveguide, such as single one-side and two-side, periodically cascaded one-side and two-side arrangement of microcavities, and different quantities of the latitudinal and longitudinal cavity scales, cavity-cavity distance, and cavity-waveguide distance have been systematically investigated. The calculated reflection spectra exhibit a continually splitting feature of resonant frequency when the cavity size is increased. The resonant frequency shifts toward higher frequencies when we reduce the indirect coupling coefficient by increasing the waveguide-cavity distance or by introducing a symmetric two-side structure of microcavities. Optical monomode operation of the reflection pulse can be achieved for appropriate distance between two horizontal microcavities. The resonant peaks gradually evolve into a distinct rectangular shape when we introduce periodically cascaded side-coupled microcavities along the waveguide direction, implying the creation of a forbidden minigap within the guided mode continuum. The optical filter in the two-side configurations has a better filtering performance than in the one-side constructions. The cascaded side-coupled cavity-waveguide structure can act as a high-performance optical delay line.
Rectangular Porous-Core Photonic-Crystal Fiber With Ultra-Low Flattened Dispersion and High Birefringence for Terahertz Transmission

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Tunable Topological Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.
High Transmission in 120-degree Sharp Bends of Inversion-symmetric and Inversion-asymmetric Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Abstract:Bending loss is one of the serious problems for constructing nanophotonic integrated circuits. Recently, many works reported that valley photonic crystals (VPhCs) enable significantly high transmission via 120-degree sharp bends. However, it is unclear whether the high bend-transmission results directly from the valley-photonic effects, which are based on the breaking of inversion symmetry. In this study, we conduct a series of comparative numerical and experimental investigations of bend-transmission in various triangular PhCs with and without inversion symmetry and reveal that the high bend-transmission is solely determined by the domain-wall configuration and independent of the existence of the inversion symmetry. Preliminary analysis of the polarization distribution indicates that high bend-transmissions are closely related to the appearance of local topological polarization singularities near the bending section. Our work demonstrates that high transmission can be achieved in a much wider family of PhC waveguides, which may provide novel designs for low-loss nanophotonic integrated circuits with enhanced flexibility and a new understanding of the nature of valley-photonics

Abstract:We present the design and fabrication of a planar structure for coupling light from a multimode feed waveguide into a single-line-defect photonic-crystal waveguide. Finite-difference time-domain calculations predict a coupling efficiency of greater than 90%, and preliminary experimental results indicate successful coupling through a single-line-defect photonic-crystal waveguide. Device design, fabrication, and characterization are presented.

Abstract:In this paper we study slot structures in the 120° photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) bends. We find that the transmission characteristics of the slotted PCW bend can be simply predicted by analyzing the corresponding straight PCW. According to our mode analysis for straight PCW, the slot structure blue shifts the stopband of the fundamental mode, while enhances the light confinement at slot side. The experiment shows good agreements with the simulation. Furthermore, a low bending loss in broad bandwidth has been obtained in the capsule-shaped slot PCW bend, which is very useful for broadband application.

Abstract:A bent photonic crystal waveguide was fabricated by use of a lattice pattern of a circular photonic crystal that allowed high transmission for a broad band of wavelengths with a small radius of curvature at a bend. The waveguide was fabricated by use of alumina rods with a diameter of 3 mm. Windows of high transmission as a result of waveguiding were observed near 9 and 15 GHz. By measurement of the relative wave intensity [E]2 along the line defects, the propagation losses in the straight and the bent sections were estimated at 9.3 GHz to be 0.04 and 0.03 dB/mm, respectively.

Abstract:We propose an approach to construct waveguide intersections with broad bandwidth and low cross-talk for square-lattice photonic crystals, by utilizing a vanishing overlap of the propagation modes in the waveguides created by defects which support dipole-like defect modes. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the waveguide intersection created in the two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals. Over a bandwidth of 30nm with the center wavelength at 1300nm, transmission efficiency above 90% is obtained with cross-talk below −30dB. Especially, we demonstrate the transmission of a 500-fs pulse at 1.3μm through the intersection, and the pulse after transmission shows very little distortion while the cross-talk remains at low level meantime.

Abstract:We show theoretically that photonic band gaps (PBGs) at high frequencies could be utilized to guide or bend electromagnetic waves. As a result, the lattice constant of photonic crystals could be made larger, reducing the difficulty in fabrication, particularly in infrared and optical wavelengths. A 90° bend, operating at photonic band gaps with high frequencies, is proposed based on a 2D photonic crystal with air cylinders arranged in a triangular lattice. It is found that transmissivity through the bend at the central PBGs with high frequencies is very high even under position and radius disorders of air cylinders.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:A new type of compact three-port circulator with flat-top transmission band (FTTB) in a two-dimensional photonic crystal has been proposed, through coupling the cascaded magneto-optical resonance cavities to waveguides. The coupled-mode theory is applied to investigate the coupled structure and analyze the condition to achieve FTTB. According to the theoretical analysis, the structure is further optimized to ensure that the condition for achieving FTTB can be satisfied for both cavity-cavity coupling and cavity-waveguide coupling. Through the finite-element method, it is demonstrated that the design can realize a high quality, nonreciprocal circulating propagation of waves with an insertion loss of 0.023 dB and an isolation of 23.3 dB, covering a wide range of operation frequency. Such a wideband circulator has potential applications in large-scale integrated photonic circuits for guiding or isolating harmful optical reflections from load elements. Abstract:In this paper, an asymmetric large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber (LMA-PCF) with low bending loss at a smaller bending radius is designed. The finite-element method with a perfectly matched layer boundary is used to analyze the performance of the PCF. To achieve LMA-PCF with low bending loss, the air holes with double lattice constants and different sizes at the core are designed. Numerical results show that this structure can achieve low bending loss and LMA with a smaller bending radius at the wavelength of 1.55 μm. The effective mode area of the fundamental mode is larger than 1000 μm2 when the bending radius is ≥10 cm. The bending loss of the fundamental mode is just 0.0113 dB/m, and the difference between the fundamental and high-order modes of the bending loss is larger than 103 when the bending radius is 10 cm. Simulation results show this novel PCF can achieve LMA and have effective single-mode operation when the bending orientation angle ranges in ±110°. This novel photonic crystal has potential application in high-power fiber lasers.
Highly Birefringent Elliptical-Hole Photonic Crystal Fibers With Double Defect

Abstract:A novel elliptical-hole photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with double defect is theoretically investigated, and its high birefringence [including both the phase-index birefringence (PIB) and the group-index birefringence (GIB)] is demonstrated, which can reach an order of 10 -2 Such a PCF can especially have a very high PIB, with a negligible GIB in a small band of normalized frequencies. The PIB of this PCF is much higher than that of the circular-hole PCF with double defect, under comparable parameters. Compared with the elliptical-hole PCF with single defect, the present PCF possesses the advantages of both a higher PIB and a larger modal area for modest ellipticities; thus, it is more suitable in linear applications, as well as in fabrication. Moreover, a novel single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) PCF with a broad wavelength band is proposed and demonstrated. In addition, a new approach in designing broadband SPSM PCFs is suggested.

Abstract:In this article, we design a low-loss, high-bandwidth Z-bend photonic silicon crystal waveguide bending in a triangular lattice through topology optimization. Based on the topological optimization method, we change the relative position of air holes in the global scope to maximize the transmittance and bandwidth of the waveguide. The simulation results indicate that the transmission characteristics can be effectively improved with our method. After the optimization, the loss of the waveguide can be reduced to -5 dB and the bandwidth can increase to 160 nm. Our research has great significance for further optimizing the propagation of light in photonic crystals.

Abstract:In this paper, a low-loss 90°-bending design in femtosecond laser-induced double-line waveguides is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The bending is realized based on the total internal reflection of a corner mirror (made by precise diamond blade dicing) located at the intersection of a pair of waveguides perpendicular to each other. The waveguide bending performance was birefringence free, with the insertion loss of each bending below 0.8 dB. This method provides great flexibility and has great potential for the design of integrated photonics based on femtosecond laser-inscribed crystalline materials.

Abstract:Flat band slow light in symmetric line defect photonic crystal waveguides formed by adding dielectric pillars in the air holes nearest to the waveguide core is investigated. By adjusting the radii of the new dielectric pillars, a linear band in the photonic band structure appears which denotes low group velocity dispersion. High average group index of 74.4 with 2.3-nm bandwidth is demonstrated in an optimized waveguide by finite-difference time-domain simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, an alternative approach for waveguide branch design in photonic crystals is presented. Two kinds of waveguide branches, including L-shaped waveguide bender and T-shaped splitter, are theoretically designed by using the method of transformation optics. Based on the parameters designed, electromagnetic simulations by finite-element method on detailed examples have been performed to validate the desirable properties of low reflection and minimized distortion at the branching region and to exhibit broadband for TE wave.
