Abstract:A dodecahedral activated N‐doped porous carbon scaffold is synthesized and used for the nanoconfinement of Mg(BH4)2. Precise activation control enables a transformation from microporous carbon materials to mesoporous ones with extremely high specific surface area and pore volume, and hence the efficient nanoconfinement of Mg(BH4)2, realization of one‐step dehydrogenation and superior reversibility. A dodecahedral activated N‐doped porous carbon scaffold is synthesized and used for the nanoconfinement of Mg(BH4)2. The optimized mesoporous scaffold possesses an accumulated pore width of 2.65 nm, high specific surface area (3955.9 m2 g−1), and large pore volume (2.15 cm3 g−1), providing ample space for the confinement of Mg(BH4)2 particles and numerous surface active sites for interactions with the same. The confined Mg(BH4)2 system features a dehydrogenation onset temperature of 81.5 °C, an extremely high capacity of 10.2 wt% H2, and an almost single‐step dehydrogenation profile. Moreover, the system exhibits superior capacity retention of 82.7% after 20 cycles at a moderate temperature of 250 °C. Precise activation control enables a transformation from microporous carbon materials to mesoporous ones, and hence the efficient nanoconfinement of Mg(BH4)2 and realization of one‐step dehydrogenation. The evolution of borohydride intermediates is systematically revealed throughout the cycling process. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate defective N heteroatoms within the scaffold are vital in reducing the strength of B─H bonds, and the N‐doped carbon can facilitate decomposition of the irreversible MgB12H12 intermediate. This study opens up new avenues for designing robust carbon scaffolds doped with heteroatoms and analyzing intermediate evolution in nanoconfined Mg‐based borohydride systems.

Study on the Dehydrogenation Properties and Reversibility of Mg(Bh4)(2)-Alh3 Composite under Moderate Conditions

Abstract:Mg(BH4)(2) has been considered as one of the promising light metal complex hydrides due to its high hydrogen capacity and low cost. But its higher thermal stability (dehydrogenation at above 300 degrees C) needs to be improved for the practical application. In this study, the aluminum hydride AlH3 was introduced into complex borohydride Mg(BH4)(2) to synthesize a new Mg(BH4)(2)-AlH3 composite by ball milling method. It is found that the active Al* formed from the self-decomposition of AlH3 can effectively improve the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)(2), the Mg(BH4)(2) AlH3 composite starts to release hydrogen at 130.8 degrees C with a total hydrogen capacity of 11.9 wt.%. The dehydrogenated products of the composite is composed of Mg2Al3 and B at 350 degrees C, resulting in the improved hydrogen desorption properties of Mg(BH4)(2) AlH3 composite. The Mg2Al3 and B products would be further transformed into MgAlB4 and Al at 500 degrees C. Moreover, the Mg2Al3 and B dehydrogenated products show better reversible hydrogen storage property than that of the MgAlB4 and Al products. This research shows a way to alter hydrogen de/hydrogenation route and reversibility of Mg(BH4)(2) complex hydride by compositing with AlH3 and controlling the dehydrogenation temperature. Synergistic Catalysis in Monodispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Amorphous Carbon for Excellent Low-Temperature Dehydrogenation of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacities, excellent reversibility and abundant source. However, the high dehydrogenation energy barrier and poor kinetics embarrass the practical application of MgH2 in fuel cell. Doping nano-catalyst is deemed to be the most effective method to improve kinetics property of hydrogen storage materials, but the nanoparticles generally suffer from agglomeration and inactivation during the cycling hydrogen storage. Here we present a promising strategy to facilely prepare a high-efficiency transition metal oxide nano-catalyst, TiO2 nanoparticles, in which monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles are wrapped with amorphous carbon. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst exhibit superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation properties of MgH2. A significant reductions of hydrogen desorption temperature (163.5 degrees C) and activation energy (69.2 kJ mol(-1)) have been obtained for the TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyzed MgH2, which can be fully rehydrogenated with a reversible capacity of about 6.5 wt% at 200 degrees C within 5 min, and then completely dehydrogenated at 275 degrees C within 10 min. It is demonstrated that such significantly improved hydrogen desorption properties can be attributed to the in-situ formation of TiO2 nanoparticles, amorphous carbon and multi-valance Ti species, which play the synergistically catalytic roles in the nano-catalyst. In particular, the presence of amorphous carbon in the catalyst can not only prevent the aggregation and growth of catalyst nanoparticles, but also dramatically reduce the desorption energy value of H in MgH2, according to the density functional theory calculation. This finding opens a new venue for the synthesis of monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst with high-activity, safety, low cost, and its practical application in MgH2 and other hydrogen storage systems. Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Synergetic Action of 0D/2D/3D N-doped Carbon Nanocages and NbB2 Nanocatalyst on Reversible Hydrogen Storage Performance of Lithium Borohydride

Abstract:A synergetic approach of nanoconfinement coupling with in-situ formed nanocatalysts was developed to fabricate a novel and robust nano-LiBH4 system. The nanoconfining scaffold exhibits an unparalleled 3D hierarchical architecture featuring micro-, meso-, and macro-pores assembled by 2D interconnected nanosheets that consist of 0D hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages. This structure possesses an accumulated pore width of 7.79 nm, extremely high pore volumes of 3.16 cm3/g, and a theoretical loading capacity of 67.9 wt% for LiBH4. The in-situ formed NbB2 species transformed from initial NbF5 nanoparticles is confirmed as the final active nanocatalyst. It is worth mentioning that the defective N heteroatoms within the scaffold can serve the role of coordinating with Nb cations and weaken the B-H bonds as supported by the DFT calculations. With an optimized loading of 50 wt % LiBH4, the initial dehydrogenation temperatures can be reduced to 140.6 degrees C, and the system can rapidly release 7.55 wt% H2 at 320 degrees C within 39 min. Furthermore, the nanoconfined system exhibits excellent lowtemperature reversibility, retaining 93 % of its capacity after 20 cycles at 300 degrees C. This study provides innovative perspectives on the design of novel scaffold structures doped with defective heteroatoms for the nanoconfinement and synergetic catalysis of de/rehydrogenation for metal borohydrides.
Insights into magnesium borohydride dehydrogenation mechanism from its partial reversibility under moderate conditions

Abstract:Magnesium borohydride, Mg(BH4)(2), is a potential hydrogen storage material because of its high hydrogen capacity and favorable thermodynamic stability comparing to other borohydrides. Although various intermediates, which influence the hydrogen storage properties, have been explored during the hydrogen desorption process of Mg(BH4)(2), the in-depth dehydrogenation mechanism is still unclear. Herein, partial reversibility of Mg(BH4)(2) and its dehydrogenation mechanism are investigated by isothermal cycles. It is found that Mg(BH4)(2) can release 7.06 wt% H-2 at 270 degrees C for 3-day duration. After rehydrogenation, 3.61 wt% H-2 is released during the second dehydrogenation. In the third and fourth cycles of hydrogen desorption, 3.54 and 3.24 wt% H-2 are released, respectively. By carefully analyzing de/rehydrogenated samples with nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer methods, the MgB5H9, MgB2H6, MgB8H8, MgB9H9, and MgB12H12 borohydride intermediates can be confirmed. Among the intermediates, MgB5H9 and MgB9H9 possess reversibility to Mg(BH4)(2), whereas MgB8H8 and MgB12H12 are irreversible under the current hydrogen absorption conditions of 120 bar hydrogen backpressure. Considering the content change trend of these intermediates during hydrogen de/absorption cycles, the partial dehydrogenation mechanism of Mg(BH4)(2) is proposed. In general, there are two different kinds of borohydride intermediates consisting in the hydrogen de/absorption processes: the metastable kind, MgBxHy (x < y), and the stable kind, MgBzHz. During the early phase of dehydrogenation, Mg(BH4)(2) tends to first decompose into MgBxHy, which possesses relatively high hydrogen content. Later, MgBzHz with relatively low hydrogen content will be transformed from both Mg(BH4)(2) and MgBxHy and become the majority of the dehydrogenation products. Finally, MgBzHz will polymerize into intermediates with high 'z' values during further hydrogen desorption process, eventually MgB12H12. Such partial dehydrogenation mechanism of Mg(BH4)(2) is assumed to be promoted to the general dehydrogenation process of Mg(BH4)(2). Furthermore, the discovery of the reversible intermediates including MgB5H9 and MgB9H9 sheds light on the method of thermodynamically controlling the dehydrogenation conditions to selectively form reversible intermediates, for the purpose of enhancing the reversible properties of Mg(BH4)(2). Graphene‐Tailored Thermodynamics and Kinetics to Fabricate Metal Borohydride Nanoparticles with High Purity and Enhanced Reversibility

Abstract:Due to their ultrahigh theoretical capacity, metal borohydrides are considered to be one of the most promising candidate hydrogen storage materials. Their application still suffers, however, from high operating temperature, sluggish kinetics, and poor reversibility. Designing nanostructures is an effective way of addressing these issues, but seeking suitable approaches remains a big challenge. Here, a space-confined solid-gas reaction to synthesize Mg(BH4)(2) nanoparticles supported on grapheme is reported, which serves as the structural support for the dispersed Mg(BH4)(2) nanoparticles. More notably, density functional theory calculations reveal that graphene could weaken both the MgH bonds of MgH2 and BB bonds of B2H6, which could thermodynamically and kinetically facilitate the chemical transformation to synthesize Mg(BH4)(2) with high purity. Because of the synergistic effects of both the significant reduction in particle size and the catalytic effect of graphene, an onset dehydrogenation temperature of approximate to 154 degrees C is observed for Mg(BH4)(2) nanoparticles, and a complete dehydrogenation could be achieved at a temperature as low as 225 degrees C, with the formation of MgB2 as the by-product. This work provides a new perspective to tailoring the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions toward the favorable synthesis of functional inorganic materials.
Enhanced low temperature hydrogen desorption properties and mechanism of Mg(BH4)2 composited with 2D MXene

Abstract:Mg(BH4)2 occupies a large hydrogen storage capacity of 14.7 wt%, and has been widely recognized to be one of the potential candidates for hydrogen storage. In this work, 2D MXene Ti3C2 was introduced into Mg(BH4)2 by a facile ball-milling method in order to improve its dehydrogenation properties. After milling with Ti3C2, Mg(BH4)2–Ti3C2 composites exhibit a novel “layered cake” structure. Mg(BH4)2 with greatly reduced particle sizes are found to disperse uniformly on Ti3C2 layered structure. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of Mg(BH4)2 has been decreased to 124.6 °C with Ti3C2 additive and the hydrogen liberation process can be fully accomplished below 400 °C. Besides, more than 10.8 wt% H2 is able to be liberated from Mg(BH4)2–40Ti3C2 composite at 330 °C within 15 min, while pristine Mg(BH4)2 merely releases 5.3 wt% hydrogen. Moreover, the improved dehydrogenation kinetics can be retained during the subsequent second and third cycles. Detailed investigations reveal that not only Ti3C2 keeps Mg(BH4)2 particles from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation, but also the metallic Ti formed in-situ serves as the active sites to catalyze the decomposition of Mg(BH4)2 by destabilizing the B–H covalent bonds. This synergistic effect of size reduction and catalysis actually contributes to the greatly advanced hydrogen storage characteristics of Mg(BH4)2.
Facile Construction of Mxene-supported Niobium Hydride Nanoparticles Toward Reversible Hydrogen Storage in Magnesium Borohydride

Abstract:The facile construction of nanoscale NbH x supported by Ti 3 C 2 （NbH x @Ti 3 C 2 ） was achieved using facile ball milling strategy to improve the hydrogen desorption kinetics and reversibility of magnesium borohydride (Mg（BH 4 ） 2 ).The doping of 30 wt%NbH x @Ti 3 C 2 catalyst reduced the onset dehydrogenation temperature of Mg（BH 4 ） 2 to 71.2℃.Additionally,the Mg（BH 4 ） 2 +30NbH x @Ti 3 C 2 composite achieved remarkable hydrogen release of over 9.2 wt% at a temperature as low as 230℃,indicating unexpected dehydrogenation kinetics.Moreover,the reversibility of NbH x @Ti 3 C 2 doped Mg（BH 4 ） 2 was retained to more than 4.2 wt%after four cycles,which was increased by 68% compared to that of undoped Mg（BH 4 ） 2 .The strong catalysis of NbH x @Ti 3 C 2 catalyst could be attributed to the synergistic effect of NbH x and Ti 3 C 2 in hydrogen spillover and diffusion.NbH x acted as a??hydrogen pump??for effective hydrogen spillover,while Ti 3 C 2 created numerous diffusion channels for hydrogen dissolution and provided the active catalytic site to facilitate the re/dehydrogenation of Mg（BH 4 ） 2 .
Niobium Fluoride-Modified Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of Magnesium Borohydride Diammoniate

Abstract:Metal borohydride ammoniates have become one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials due to their ultrahigh capacities. However, their application is still restricted by the high temperature of hy-drogen desorption and the release of ammonia. Here, to promote the dehydrogenation evolution and suppress the ammonia release, different amounts of NbF5 were introduced into Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3. Com-pared to the pure Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3, the Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3-NbF5 composites exhibit lower onset dehydriding temperatures (53-57 degrees C) and higher dehydriding capacities (5.6 wt.%-8.2 wt.%) at below 200 degrees C, with the complete suppression of ammonia. In addition, 7.4 wt.% H2 could be released from Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3 -5 mol% NbF5 composite at 200 degrees C within 20 min and the apparent activation energy is calculated to be 60.28 kJ mol-1, which is much lower than that of pure Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3 (92.04 kJ mol-1). Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3 should mechanochemically react with NbF5, forming dual-metal (Mg, Nb) borohydride ammoniate and spherical MgF2. The introduction of electronegative Nb cation results in-situ formation of (Mg, Nb) boro-hydride ammoniate towards a lower dehydrogenation temperature and a higher hydrogen release purity. The increased phase boundaries among the Mg(BH4)2 center dot 2NH3, dual-metal (Mg, Nb) borohydride ammoniate, and MgF2 phases further facilitate the hydrogen diffusion during the dehydrogenation of the composites.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.

Abstract:An ammonia-redistribution strategy for synthesizing metal borohydride ammoniates with controllable coordination number of NH3 was proposed, and a series of magnesium borohydride ammoniates were easily synthesized by a mechanochemical reaction between Mg(BH4)2 and its hexaammoniate. A strong dependence of the dehydrogenation temperature and purity of the released hydrogen upon heating on the coordination number of NH3 was elaborated for Mg(BH4)2 center dot x?NH3 owing to the change in the molar ratio of Hd+ and Hd-, the charge distribution on Hd+ and Hd-, and the strength of the coordinate bond N:-> Mg2+. The monoammoniate of magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH4)2 center dot NH3) was obtained for the first time. It can release 6.5?% pure hydrogen within 50 minutes at 180 degrees C.
Remarkable enhancement in dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)2 modified by the synergetic effect of fluorographite and LiBH4

Abstract:Mg(BH4)2 is considered as one of the most promising light metal complex hydrides because of its high volumetric and gravimetric hydrogen capacities and world-wide abundance. However, its higher major desorption temperatures (above 300 °C) and poor reaction kinetics have to be improved for the practical application. Herein, Mg(BH4)2 was successfully synthesized via wet-chemical technique and a significant enhancement in dehydrogenation performance of Mg(BH4)2 is achieved by the synergetic effect of fluorographite (FGi) and LiBH4. Under the effect of FGi, the hydrogen desorption of 6 Mg(BH4)2-4FGi composite could be completed below 170 °C in seconds. However, the hydrogen released from 6 Mg(BH4)2-4FGi suffers from impurities of B2H6 and HF. More importantly, it is demonstrated that almost all the B2H6 and HF impurities can be suppressed by synergetic modifying Mg(BH4)2 with FGi and LiBH4. The 3 Mg(BH4)2–3LiBH4-4FGi composite exhibits a capacity over 8.0 wt% H2 and starts to release hydrogen at 125.7 °C, which is 143.8 °C and 254.3 °C lower than that of pure Mg(BH4)2 and LiBH4, respectively. These significant improvements could be attributed to both the novel morphology that numerous nano-scale borohydride spots formed on the surface of FGi, and the formations of stable fluorides (MgF2 and LiF) from the interaction between borohydrides and FGi.
Realizing Nano-Confinement of Magnesium for Hydrogen Storage Using Vapour Transport Deposition

Abstract:A new approach was developed to successfully load Mg into the nanometre-sized pores of an anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) template for realizing the nano-confinement of Mg. Structural characterization shows that Mg nano-particles are nucleated along the AAO pipe wall together with the formation of MgO and Mg17Al12 as by-products. The flow rate of argon gas, the temperature of the AAO template and the transporting distance between the Mg vapour source and the AAO template were optimized to achieve the confinement of Mg nano-particles with larger loading rate. Under optimized deposition conditions, the particle size of the loaded Mg is less than 100 nm and the effective filling factor is about 35 wt%. The confined Mg/MgH2 even after 10 de-/hydrogenation cycles still shows favourable kinetics. Furthermore, the slight reduction in hydrogen desorption enthalpy and entropy of MgH2 from (74.42 ± 0.12) to (73.21 ± 0.04) kJ·mol−1 and (130.98 ± 0.05) to (130.11 ± 0.24) J·mol−1·K−1 is also found in the present nano-confinement.
In-situ Synthesis of Amorphous Mg(BH4)2 and Chloride Composite Modified by NbF5 for Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties

Abstract:The solvent-free amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) composite was in-situ synthesized by ball milling LiBH4 and MgCl2. It is found that the onset dehydrogenation temperature of the as synthesized composite is 126.9 degrees C, which is roughly 156 degrees C lower than that of pristine Mg(BH4)(2). The activation energy of the amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) and pristine Mg(BH4)(2) for the first dehydrogenation step was calculated as 120.01 kJ/mol and 487.99 kJ/mol, respectively. Hence the kinetics improvement is certified by the lower Ea value of the dehydrogenation process. When adding NbF5 into the composite, the catalyzed composite exhibits better hydrogen storage properties compared to pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The catalyzed composite starts to release hydrogen at proximately 120 degrees C with a total capacity of 10.04 wt %. The reversibility of the catalyzed composite is also improved. The capacity of the catalyzed composite at the second cycle is 5.5 wt%. For the third and fourth cycles the catalyzed composite can still liberate 4 wt% H-2. Besides, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature during four cycles are extremely lower than those of pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The peaks of the intermediate MgB12H12 is detected by FTIR as the regenerated hydrogenation product in the catalyzed composite. It can be speculated from the detailed analysis that there are mainly three reasons for the improved properties. Firstly, the additive NbF5 is favorable to enhance the hydrogen storage properties by modifying the dehydrogenation path and producing MgF2 and NbB2 as new products. Secondly, the in-situ formation of amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) is likely to improve the dehydrogenation properties of the samples due to its different reactivity comparing to crystal ones. Abstract:Borohydrides have been recently hightlighted as prospective new materials due to their high gravimetric capacities for hydrogen storage. It is, therefore, important to understand the underlying dehydrogenation mechanisms for further development of these materials. We present a systematic theoretical investigation on the dehydrogenation mechanisms of the Mg2(BH4)2(NH2)2 compounds. We found that dehydrogenation takes place most likely via the intermolecular process, which is favorable both kinetically and thermodynamically in comparison with that of the intramolecular process. The dehydrogenation of Mg2(BH4)2(NH2)2 initially takes place via the direct combination of the hydridic H in BH4− and the protic H in NH2−, followed by the formation of Mg—H and subsequent ionic recombination of Mg—Hδ− ··· Hδ+−N.

Abstract:An effective strategy of utilizing electrospinning techniques to fabricate MgCl2 catalyzed ammonia borane (AB) nanofibers with a tunable fiber diameter is reported. The synergistic effect obtained by combining nanofibers and metallic catalyst plays a crucial role in the decomposition of MgCl2-doped AB nanofibers, which leads to significant improvements in dehydrogenation kinetics and complete suppression of unwanted byproducts. The results of dehydrogenation show that MgCl2-doped AB nanofibers were able to release over 10.0 wt % pure H2 below 100 °C with favorable kinetics, a significant advance over releases from bulk AB. Furthermore, the dehydrogenation of MgCl2-doped AB nanofibers gives a weak exothermic reaction, −3.84 kJ mol−1 H2, which is dramatically lower than that of neat AB (−21 kJ mol−1 H2), which suggests that the electrospun sample is potentially more feasible to reverse. The findings in this paper provide general guidelines and inspiration for the design and synthesis of novel nano-fibrous materials with controllable dimensions for hydrogen storage applications.
Stabilization Of Nazn(Bh4)(3) Via Nanoconfinement In Sba-15 Towards Enhanced Hydrogen Release

Abstract:In the present work, the decomposition behaviour of NaZn(BH4)(3) nanoconfined in mesoporous SBA-15 has been investigated in detail and compared to bulk NaZn(BH4)(3) that was ball milled with SBA-15, but not nanoconfined. The successful incorporation of nanoconfined NaZn(BH4)(3) into mesopores of SBA-15 was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, B-11 nuclear magnetic resonance, nitrogen absorption/desorption isotherms, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. It is demonstrated that the dehydrogenation of the space-confined NaZn(BH4)(3) is free of emission of boric by-products, and significantly improved hydrogen release kinetics is also achieved, with pure hydrogen release at temperatures ranging from 50 to 150 degrees C. By the Arrhenius method, the activation energy for the modified NaZn(BH4)(3) was calculated to be only 38.9 kJ mol(-1), a reduction of 5.3 kJ mol(-1) compared to that of bulk NaZn(BH4)(3). This work indicates that nanoconfinement within a mesoporous scaffold is a promising approach towards stabilizing unstable metal borohydrides to achieve hydrogen release with high purity.
