Abstract:The challenge of Hg-0 emission control has necessitated the development of catalytic oxidation technology. Herein, a combination of experimental and computational approach to explore the potential over Mo-Mn catalysts was conducted. Series of catalysts were synthesized and characterized with varying Mn and Mo loading (1-10%). Among the various compositions, 1.25Mo2 Mn catalyst exhibited the best Hg-0 removal performance with Hg(0 )removal efficiency > 98% (oxidation ratio > 50%, and better stability over 10 h period at 250 degrees C). Most importantly, the synergistic interaction between MoO3 and defective delta-MnO2 nanosheet was promoted by the adjusted activation energy, bond strength, Bronsted acidic sites and defects, which facilitated the catalytic oxidation of Hg-0 to Hg2+. Furthermore, DFT calculations suggested that the role of Mo enabled the reduction in the energy barrier for the desorption step, which was defined as the rate-determining step for catalytic oxidation of Hg-0 on Mn-based catalyst.
One-pot Synthesis of Etched CoMn-layered Double Hydroxides Efficient for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:One-pot synthesis of etched thin CoMn-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) is successfully achieved via the in-situ ammonium fluoride etching at room temperature. The facile methodology developed here avoids the traditionally hydrothermal treatment and the complex exfoliation procedure. The as-prepared etched CoMn-LDHs of similar to 9.3 nm exhibit excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction, whereas the etched CoMn-LDHs display a reduction of 150 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2) compared to the state-of-the-art RuO2 in 0.1M NaOH. Besides, the etched CoMn-LDHs display much smaller Tafel slope and resistance than that of non-etched CoMn-LDHs. Compared with the traditional method, the as-developed in-situ chemical etching is much more efficient with additional advantages of producing highly active sites. More importantly, density functional theory (DFT) has confirmed the experimental results and documented that the much enhanced electrocatalytic activity of thin CoMn-LDHs is associated with a nearly optimal intermediates (*OH and *O) adsorption energy.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (OVs) were introduced into Ni-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) through Cu doping, and the catalytic performance of the resulting NixCu-LDHs were investigated for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (MeP) degradation. Compared with that of Ni-LDH, the catalytic performance of NixCu-LDHs were significantly enhanced and increased with increasing OV content in the catalysts, indicating that Cu doping introduced OVs into NixCu-LDHs and greatly improved their catalytic activity with PMS. Quenching experiments and EPR analyses confirmed that oxidation processes dominated by superoxide radicals (O2•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2), rather than sulfate radicals (SO4•-) or hydroxyl radicals (•OH) used by traditional LDH catalysts, were responsible for MeP degradation by Ni15Cu-LDHs. In addition, quenching experiments with different systems showed the fate of reduced SO4•-and •OH, and demonstrated that O2•- and 1O2 concentrations grew with increasing OV content, confirming that the presence of OVs affected the process of PMS activation. Notably, O2•- mainly originated from adsorbed oxygen or dissolved oxygen (DO) by acquiring electrons from OVs in Ni15Cu-LDHs, since OVs possess abundant localized electrons. Consequently, an OV-mediated oxidative mechanism was proposed for Ni15Cu-LDHs/PMS. This study provides new clues for enhancing the catalytic performance of LDH catalysts by introducing OVs via metal doping in PMS-based AOPs systems.
Mn doped CeO2-MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for the enhanced adsorption and catalytic oxidation of Hg0 in oxygen atmosphere

Abstract:A series of Mn-doped CeO2-MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized for the adsorption and catalytic oxidation of Hg0 from coal-fired flue gas using oxygen as the oxidizing agent. The results showed that the addition of Mn significantly promoted the adsorption and catalytic performances of CeO2-MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. The 6 wt% Mn-doped catalysts exhibited the best Hg0 catalytic oxidation efficiency of 86%. The catalysts were characterized to illustrate the structure-activity relationship of Mn-doped catalysts. It is found that the addition of Mn to the CeO2 and MoO3 lattice increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface which promotes the catalytic oxidation of mercury. HRTEM results indicate that the incorporation of Mn cracked CeO2 crystal plane with an angle of 105° and may generate more active sites at the interface. Besides, the in-situ DRIFT spectra show that the acidic sites on the Mn-doped catalyst surface were dominated by Brønsted acid sites at lower temperatures which play an essential role in the adsorption of mercury. Overall, This research reveals the effect of Mn additives on the promotion of adsorption capacity and catalytic oxidation efficiency of Hg0, providing a promising approach to widen the effective temperature window of the catalyst.

Abstract:MnOx-based oxides have been recognized as efficient catalysts for elemental mercury (Hg0) oxidation at low temperature from flue gas. CeO2 or CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution can enhance the catalytic activity of MnOx, so combining manganese and CeO2 or CeO2-ZrO2 is a promising way to obtain more highly effective catalysts. Two kinds of combination modes were considered: one was MnOx loaded on the CeO2-ZrO2 to form a supported catalyst (MnOx/CeO2-ZrO2, Mn/CZ), and the other was Mn-doped into the CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution to generate a new MnOx-CeO2-ZrO2 (CZM) solid solution catalyst. However, it was not yet known which catalyst prepared by the two combination modes has the better Hg0 oxidation performance. To compare their catalytic activities, the two kinds of catalysts with varying Mn mass content were synthesized by the similar method, and the Hg0 catalytic oxidation performances and the effects of SO2 were tested under the same conditions. The catalysts were well characterized by ICP, XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM and N2 adsorption test, and the results suggested that with the same mass fraction of Mn in the catalyst, the BET surface area and the active species concentration (Mn4+ and Oad) of the new MnOx-CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution catalyst were higher than those of the supported catalyst. Activity tests results showed that for the MnOx loaded samples, 18%Mn/CZ exhibited the best activity (64.58%)., while for the Mn doped solid solution, Ce0.525Zr0.175Mn0.3O2 exhibited the highest Hg removal efficiency (89.53%). The mass contents of Mn in 18%Mn/CZ and Ce0.525Zr0.175Mn0.3O2 were similar. The results suggested that the new solid solution MnOx-CeO2-ZrO2 was more promising for Hg0 oxidation. For both types of the catalysts, Mn4+ and surface active oxygen (Oad) were the active species in the Hg0 oxidation reactions. SO2 significantly inhibited the activity of MnOx/CeO2-ZrO2, because SO2 prevented the reaction between Hg0 and the active species (Mn4+ and Oad). The MnOx-CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution exhibited better SO2 resistance, because the SO2 just inhibited the reaction between Hg0 and Oad.

Abstract:The single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown tremendous potential in heterogeneous catalytic process, because of their high atomic utilization efficiency and controllable characteristic of various active sites. The accurate structure design at atomic scale of SACs brings new opportunities and challenges for the cost-effective Hg 0 oxidation and the study in molecularly catalytic mechanism by the oxidant of O 2 . Herein, a series of single transition metal atom doped (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) on h-BN vacancy (M/V-BN) were well designed and the interaction behaviours were further investigated via Density Functional Theory (DFT) method. The mercury oxidation profiles and mechanism in the existence of O 2 had been clarified on the optimized single atom catalytic site. The results show that the six kinds of TM atoms can exist stably on the surface of boron-vacancy (V B -BN) monolayer and have the potential to activate the new two-dimensional material (h-BN) with high surface reactivity. Among them, the most stable configuration Fe/V B -BN exhibited the best affinity to Hg 0 with an adsorption energy of -1.697 eV, and the Fe-Hg bond was the shortest of 2.747 Å. The covalent interaction of Fe-Hg bond is demonstrated by the overlaps between Fe d-orbitals and Hg p-orbital. The chemisorption mechanism dominates the adsorption processes of different mercury species (Hg 0 , HgO, HgCl, HgBr and HgS), with the adsorption energy ranging from -1.2 to -4.2 eV. The Hg 0 oxidation over Fe/V B -BN by O 2 mainly follows the Eley-Rideal mechanism, and undergoes three key steps, i.e., O 2 molecule dissociation, formation of O-Hg-O structure and desorption of oxidized Hg products. O 2 was firstly adsorbed on the unsaturated Fe site and strongly activated by the metal center, which contributes to the high Hg 0 catalyst oxidation activity. The generation of O-Hg-O structure is the public stage of mercury products desorption. The rate-determining step of Hg 0 catalytic oxidation was dependent on Hg 2 O 2 cluster desorption with an energy of 2.91 eV, which was much smaller than the desorption barrier of traditional catalysts. As a whole, the outcomes demonstrate that Fe/V B -BN catalyst is one promising candidate for catalytic oxidation of Hg 0 by O 2 , which enables cleaner coalfired power plant operations.

Abstract:In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to investigate the adsorption and oxidation of Hg0 with O2 as the oxidant on pristine and O-adsorbed dimers of Fe, Co and Ni supported on the buckled g-C3N4 surface. The calculation reveals that all the dimers supported on the buckled g-C3N4 surface (Fe2/Co2/Ni2@g-C3N4) are stable at 700 K. It is found that Hg0 oxidation starts from the adsorption of O2 and its subsequent dissociation, followed by the formation of OHgO and the desorption of HgO from the surface. However, after desorption of the first HgO, the active site of the dimer becomes an O-adsorbed dimer, which affects - Hg0 oxidation reaction although the reaction pathway is similar. DFT calculations demonstrate that both the pristine dimer and O-adsorbed dimer are effective in O2 dissociation and are relatively easy for the metal-O bond to break, which is associated with a low energy barrier for these two processes. However, the interactions between O2/Hg0 and the pristine surface are significantly stronger than those between O2/Hg0 and the O-adsorbed dimer site. Rate-determining step of catalytic oxidation process on the pristine and O-adsorbed Fe2@g-C3N4 and Co2@g-C3N4 is the cleavage of the metal-O bond, while the HgO desorption dominates the pristine and O-adsorbed Ni2@g-C3N4 with an energy barrier of 2.04 eV and 1.62 eV, respectively. It is found that among the dimers studied, the Ni2@g-C3N4 exhibites the highest efficiency in the catalytic oxidation of Hg0.

Abstract:In this study, the adsorption and oxidation of elemental mercury by O2 on a series of buckled g-C3N4 monolayer-supported transition metals were investigated using Density Functional Theory method. It is shown that O2 molecules are adsorbed more strongly on the active sites compared with Hg0 atoms, while the catalytic oxidation of Hg0 undergoes three key steps, i.e., O2 dissociation, metal-O bonds cleavage and HgO desorption. Results also demonstrated that for the dissociation of O2, the energy barrier is inversely proportional to the adsorption energy of O atom. Among the catalysts studied, Fe-g-C3N4 exhibits the lowest energy barrier (0.44 eV) for O2 dissociation. The Pd-g-C3N4 is found as the most efficient catalyst for the cleavage of the first and second Pd-O bonds with an external energy of 1.28 and 2.03 eV, respectively. The covalent interaction of metal-O bonds is demonstrated by the overlaps between metal d orbitals and O p orbitals. DFT calculations also show that HgO desorption plays a crucial role in the oxidation process, which requires up to 2.92 eV for the desorption of the first HgO on the Pd-g-C3N4. The rate-determining step for the oxidation of mercury on Fe, Co, Pt and Rh-g-C3N4 is the cleavage of the second metal-O bonds, which has an energy barrier greater than 2.90 eV, while for the Pd-g-C3N4, the mercury oxidation process is dominated by the desorption of the first HgO. However, for the Ni-g-C3N4, it is limited by the reaction between O2* and the first Hg0 with an energy barrier of 2.59 eV. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Ni-g-C3N4 is of the greatest potential to be used as the catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of Hg0 by O2 atmosphere.

Abstract:The key challenge for controlling Hg0 using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is to develop a suitable catalyst capable of operating in a cost-effective manner, so it is necessary to study the in-depth reaction mechanism. Herein, Co-Mn/TiO2 catalysts were fabricated by sol-gel method, excellent stability and high efficiency of Hg0 removal (100%) and NO conversion (99%) are concurrently reached at 180 °C, which are benefited from the abundant active oxygen species on the catalysts. In order to clarify the synergistic reaction process, the mechanism of mutual effects between SCR atmosphere and Hg0 is highly dedicated. Specifically, NO and O2 were beneficial to Hg0 oxidation, while NH3 competitive adsorption with Hg0 and consumption of active oxygen species prevent the Hg0 oxidation. Impressively, the inhibition effect of NH3 was not weakened but also intensified, mainly due to the co-existence of NO and NH3 could induce partial HgO reduction. What's more, the direct evidence for the synergistic reaction mechanism of NO and Hg0 is hypothesized by a combination of XPS and in-situ DRIFTs. These findings thus open up a way to address the simultaneous removal of NO and Hg0 in industry.
Remarkable N2-selectivity enhancement of practical NH3-SCR over Co0.5Mn1Fe0.25Al0.75Ox-LDO: The role of Co investigated by transient kinetic and DFT mechanistic studies

Abstract:A Co0.5Mn1Fe0.25Al0.75Ox-LDO catalyst was developed which showed excellent performance for the low-temperature NH3-SCR. NOx conversions ∼100% were achieved in the whole 100-250 °C range, while after 10-h operation at 150 °C with 100 ppm SO2/5 vol% H2O in the feed, the NOx conversion was maintained at 80%. This catalyst provided a much better N2-selectivity than the Mn1Fe0.25Al0.75Ox-LDO and Mn1Al1Ox-LDO, especially at 150-300 °C. It was found that Co0.5Mn1Fe0.25Al0.75Ox possessed higher surface acidity and reducibility, while XPS analyses indicated an electron transfer between Co3+/Co2+ and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox cycles, leading to a much lower N2O formation, supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Detailed analysis of gas responses obtained upon various step-gas switches was performed, which allowed to measure the surface concentration and reactivity of preadsorbed NOx-s and NHx-s leading to N2 and N2O. Transient kinetic and DFT studies strongly suggested likely mechanisms of NH3-SCR and the critical role of Co for N2-selectivity enhancement.

Abstract:In this study, a series of CuCl 2 -modified MnO x -CeO x nanorods were synthesized for the oxidation of Hg 0 . The addition of CuCl 2 resulted in an enhancement in the catalyst's Hg 0 oxidation ability, and Hg 0 oxidation efficiency reached >97% from 150 to 250 °C. In the MnO x -CeO x catalysts, Mn 4+ played the role of the active species for Hg 0 oxidization, but in the CuCl 2 -doped catalysts Cl − also contributed to Hg 0 oxidation, conferring the superior performance of these samples. The introduction of SO 2 led to a decrease in the availability of Mn 4+ , and the Hg 0 oxidation efficiency of MnO x -CeO x decreased from about 100% to about 78%. By contrast, CuCl 2 -promoted samples maintained a Hg 0 oxidation efficiency of about 100% during the SO 2 deactivation cycle due to the high reactivity of Cl − .

Abstract:A dual-functional MnO2/La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 composite catalyst was prepared and tested for the oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg-0) present in the coal-derived flue gas. The thus derived Hg2+ can then be removed from the flue gas via current pollution control devices. The MnO2 appears as the active component for the oxidation of elemental mercury, whereas the superior magnetic property of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 catalytic component makes the catalyst recoverable from the fly-ash mixture. The Hg-0 oxidation efficiency was found larger than 80% in the temperature range of 150-300 degrees C and at a GHSV of 120,000 mL/(g h), whereas the catalytic efficiency could be further increased to > 95% in the presence of 5 ppm HCl in the flue gas.
Enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction activity and stability of high-valent CoOOH by switching the catalytic pathway through doping low-valent Cu

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical process in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. The adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway possesses the characteristics of high stability but slow catalytic kinetics. We propose that combining AEM with the lattice oxidation mechanism (LOM) pathway can potentially enhance the OER catalytic activity and stability. However, the triggering of LOM is an important challenge due to the high thermodynamic activation barrier of lattice oxygen. To solve this problem, we performed theoretical calculations and experiments which suggest that the introduction of low-valent Cu in CoOOH (CuxCo1-xOOH) could directionally modulate the local coordination environment of CoO bonds. This approach can activate lattice oxygen and generate oxygen vacancies to enhance the nucleophilic attack of *OH and directly establish OO coupling, thereby facilitating the smoothly switching from AEM to LOM pathway by increasing voltage and thus activating lattice oxygen in CuxCo1-xOOH. The switching of AEM and LOM enables CuxCo1-xOOH showing an outstanding overpotential of only 252 mV (10 mA cm-2) and durability of only 2.80 % degradation after 280h. This work provides a new way for designing efficient and stable electrocatalysts with AEM and LOM pathway switching.
Formation and Stabilization of NiOOH by Introducing α‐FeOOH in LDH: Composite Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution and Urea Oxidation Reactions

Abstract:NiOOH has been considered as the most active intermediate during electrochemical oxidation reaction, however, it is hard to directly synthesize due to high oxidation energy. Herein, theoretical calculations predict that α‐FeOOH enables a decline in formation energy and an improvement in stabilization of NiOOH in NiFe‐based layered double hydroxide (LDH). Inspiringly, a composite composed of α‐FeOOH and LDH is well‐designed and successfully fabricated in hydrothermal treatment by adding extra Fe3+ resource, and stable NiOOH is obtained by the following electro‐oxidation method. Benefiting from strong electron‐capturing capability of α‐FeOOH, it efficiently promotes charge redistribution around the Ni/Fe sites and activates Ni atoms of LDH, verified by X‐ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and X‐ray absorption spectra (XAS). The d‐band center is optimized that balances the absorption and desorption energy, and thus Gibbs free energy barrier is lowered dramatically toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and finally showing an outstanding overpotential of 195 mV and a potential of 1.35 V at 10 mA/cm2, respectively. Influence of Mn doping on the performance of CuO-CeO2 catalysts for selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich streams

Abstract:CuO-CeO2 catalysts with Mn doping were studied for the selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich streams. CO conversions of up to 99.0% were attained from 110 to 140°C, with O2 selectivity above 50%. The formation of a more stable solid solution with a larger surface area and smaller particle size after doping Mn contributed to the excellent performance.

Abstract:Developing cost efficient, robust, non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a significant challenge in water splitting for renewable energy conversion. A novel electrocatalyst of heterogeneous ultra-thin FeCo-LDH@Co(OH)2 nanosheets derived from 2D Zeolitic imidazolate framework facilitated electrons transfer for OER. DFT calculation revealed that heterogeneous interfaces reduced adsorption energy barriers of intermediates in rate-determining step of OER. The CoOOH with higher CoIII valence state derived from surface reconstruction, which was detected via in-situ Raman spectroscopy, activated O ions to provide higher intrinsic activity. XPS results confirmed that electrons transfer from Co(OH)2 to FeCo-LDH accelerated alkaline OER kinetics. The FeCo-LDH@Co(OH)2–0.5 exhibited low overpotentials of 230 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and maintained long durability for 300 h. This study opened up a new method for design and synthesis of ultrathin LDHs electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The promotional effects of Cu and Fe over the V2O5-WO3/TiO2 NH3-SCR catalyst for the oxidation of Hg0 and the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 were investigated in the temperature range of 280–360°C. Cu or Fe addition, especially Cu, improved the catalytic performance of V2O5-WO3/TiO2. The results show that Cu2+ was the main Cu species in the Cu-containing catalyst, whereas FeVO4 was formed in the Fe-containing catalyst. Well-dispersed active species, good redox properties and abundant chemisorbed surface oxygen species on the catalyst surface were responsible for the high catalytic performances. Hg0 oxidation over the V-based catalysts may follow a Mars-Maessen mechanism.

Abstract:High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have been tentatively and prospectively applied for chemical catalysis and energy storage. However, further enhancing their performance is difficult owing to the difficulty in precisely regulating the physical-chemical properties. In this work, a general in-situ modulation strategy of solid-phase combustion involving thiourea addition and alkali liquor treatment is de-veloped to activate metal sites and lattice oxygen species of CuCoNiZnAl HEOs. Consequently, com-pared with pristine HEOs, the activated HEOs not only display higher CO2 hydrogenation and CO oxidation activities but also significantly enhanced electrocatalytic performance (discharge/charge capacities of 12049/9901 mAh/g) with excellent cycle stability (2500 h) for Li-O2 batteries. The superior performance of the activated HEOs is attributed to its facile electron transferability. This simple and effective strategy could be easily applied on a large scale, guiding the development of highly active heterogeneous HEO catalysts for various functional applications.
Flexible Active-Site Engineering of Monometallic Co-Layered Double Hydroxides for Achieving High-Performance Bifunctional Electrocatalyst Toward Oxygen Evolution and H2O2 Reduction

Abstract:It is highly desirable but challenging to develop a facile and scalable strategy to synthesize efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution and H2O2 reduction by engineering the active site of monometallic-layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Herein, we developed a convenient, efficient, and scalable method for the construction of monometallic Co-LDHs with tunable Con+ (n = 2, 3) concentration by a one-pot solvothermal reaction in a short time (e.g., 2 and 4 h) using only cobalt nitrate and hexamine as raw materials. The catalytic performance of Co-LDHs was mainly determined by the Con+ (n = 2, 3) concentration, which could be simply regulated by tuning the solvothermal time. Combining the joint merits of three-dimensional flowerlike architecture (abundant accessible active sites and a fast electron/mass transport), Co-LDHs-4 with abundant Co3+ species exhibited an excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction in terms of a low overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 (η10 = 241 mV) and long-term durability for 70 h at 100 mA cm-2, better than the state-of-the-art IrO2 and most of the reported analogues. Besides, Co-LDHs-2 enriched in Co2+ displayed a superior electrochemical activity for H2O2 detection with a broad linear range (0.002-20 mM), a low detection limit (0.002 mM), and a high response sensitivity (272.02 μA mM-1 cm-2). Therefore, this work opens a new horizon for the rational development of a highly active electrocatalyst with tunable concentrations of active components.
