Abstract: Quaternionic polynomials are generated by quaternionic variables and the quaternionic product. This paper proposes the generating ideal of quaternionic polynomials in tensor algebra, finds the Groebner base of the ideal in the case of pure imaginary quaternionic variables, and describes the normal forms of such quaternionic polynomials explicitly.

Abstract:The polynomials with quaternion coefficients have two kind of roots: isolated and spherical. A spherical root generates a class of roots which contains only one complex number $z$ and its conjugate $\bar{z}$, and this class can be determined by $z$. In this paper, we deal with the complex roots of quaternion polynomials. More precisely, using Bézout matrices, we give necessary and sufficient conditions, for a quaternion polynomial to have a complex root, a spherical root, and a complex isolated root. Moreover, we compute a bound for the size of the roots of a quaternion polynomial.

Factorization of Quaternionic Polynomials of Bi-Degree (n,1)

Abstract:We consider polynomials of bi-degree $(n,1)$ over the skew field of quaternions where the indeterminates commute with each other and with all coefficients. Polynomials of this type do not generally admit factorizations. We recall a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a factorization with univariate linear factors that has originally been stated by Skopenkov and Krasauskas. Such a factorization is, in general, non-unique by known factorization results for univariate quaternionic polynomials. We unveil existence of bivariate polynomials with non-unique factorizations that cannot be explained in this way and characterize them geometrically and algebraically. Existence of factorizations is related to the existence of special rulings of two different types (left/right) on the ruled surface parameterized by the bivariate polynomial in the projective space over the quaternions. Special non-uniqueness in above sense can be explained algebraically by commutation properties of factors in suitable factorizations. A necessary geometric condition for this to happen is degeneration to a point of at least one of the left/right rulings.

Abstract: We clarify the linear algebra used in the quaternionic pluripotential theory so that proofs of several results there can be greatly simplified. In particular, we characterize and normalize real $2$-forms with respect to the quaternionic structure, and show that the Moore determinant of a quaternionic hyperhermitian matrix is the coefficient of the exterior product of the associated real $2$-form. As a corollary, the quaternionic Monge-Amp\`{e}re operator is the coefficient of the exterior product of the Baston operator.

Abstract:In classical invariant theory, the Gr\"obner base of the ideal of syzygies and the normal forms of polynomials of invariants are two core contents. To improve the performance of invariant theory in symbolic computing of classical geometry, advanced invariants are introduced via Clifford product. This paper addresses and solves the two key problems in advanced invariant theory: the Gr\"obner base of the ideal of syzygies among advanced invariants, and the normal forms of polynomials of advanced invariants. These results beautifully extend the straightening of Young tableaux to advanced invariants.

Abstract:A right quaternion matrix polynomial is an expression of the form $P(\lambda)= \displaystyle \sum_{i=0}^{m}A_i \lambda^i$, where $A_i$'s are $n \times n$ quaternion matrices with $A_m \neq 0$. The aim of this manuscript is to determine the location of right eigenvalues of $P(\lambda)$ relative to certain subsets of the set of quaternions. In particular, we extend the notion of (hyper)stability of complex matrix polynomials to quaternion matrix polynomials and obtain location of right eigenvalues of $P(\lambda)$ using the following methods: $(1)$ we give a relation between (hyper)stability of a quaternion matrix polynomial and its complex adjoint matrix polynomial, $(2)$ we prove that $P(\lambda)$ is stable with respect to an open (closed) ball in the set of quaternions, centered at a complex number if and only if it is stable with respect to its intersection with the set of complex numbers and $(3)$ as a consequence of $(1)$ and $(2)$, we prove that right eigenvalues of $P(\lambda)$ lie between two concentric balls of specific radii in the set of quaternions centered at the origin. We identify classes of quaternion matrix polynomials for which stability and hyperstability are equivalent. We finally deduce hyperstability of certain univariate quaternion matrix polynomials via stability of certain multivariate quaternion matrix polynomials.

Abstract:We consider bivariate polynomials over the skew field of quaternions, where the indeterminates commute with all coefficients and with each other. We analyze existence of univariate factorizations, that is, factorizations with univariate linear factors. A necessary condition for existence of univariate factorizations is factorization of the norm polynomial into a product of univariate polynomials. This condition is, however, not sufficient. Our central result states that univariate factorizations exist after multiplication with a suitable univariate real polynomial as long as the necessary factorization condition is fulfilled. We present an algorithm for computing this real polynomial and a corresponding univariate factorization. If a univariate factorization of the original polynomial exists, a suitable input of the algorithm produces a constant multiplication factor, thus giving an a posteriori condition for existence of univariate factorizations. Some factorizations obtained in this way are of interest in mechanism science. We present an example of a curious closed-loop mechanism with eight revolute joints.

On the geometry of zero sets of central quaternionic polynomials

Abstract:Let R be the ring of polynomials in n central variables over the real quaternion algebra H, and let I be a left ideal in R. We prove that if a polynomial p in R vanishes at all the common zeros of I in H^n with commuting coordinates, then as a slice regular quaternionic function, p vanishes at all common zeros of I in H^n. This confirms a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci, who settled the two dimensional case.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the topological space of normalized quaternion-valued positive definite functions on an arbitrary abelian group G , especially its convex characteristics. There are two main results. Firstly, we prove that the extreme elements in the family of such functions are exactly the homomorphisms from G to the sphere group , i.e., the unit 3-sphere in the quaternion algebra. Secondly, we reveal a new phenomenon: The compact convex set of such functions is not a Bauer simplex except when G is of exponent . In contrast, its complex counterpart is always a Bauer simplex, as is well known. We also present an integral representation for such functions as an application and some other minor results.

Abstract:Polynomial factorization and root finding are among the most standard themes of computational mathematics. Yet still, little has been done for polynomials over quaternion algebras, with the single exception of Hamiltonian quaternions for which there are known numerical methods for polynomial root approximation. The sole purpose of the present paper is to present a polynomial factorization algorithm for division quaternion algebras over number fields, together with its adaptation for root finding.

Abstract:Following the work of the first and last authors [2], we further analyze the structure of a zero set of a left ideal in the ring of central polynomials over the quaternion algebra H. We describe the "algebraic hull" of a point in H^n and prove it is a product of spheres. Using this description we give a new proof to a conjecture of Gori, Sarfatti and Vlacci. We also show that the main result of [2] does not extend to general division algebras.

Abstract:The estimation of zeros of a polynomial with quaternionic coefficients has been done by many mathematicians in the recent past using various approaches. In this paper, we estimate the upper bounds for the zeros of polynomials and derive zero-free regions of some special regular functions of a quaternionic variable with restricted coefficients using the extended Schwarz's lemma and the zero sets of a regular product. The obtained results for this subclass of polynomials and regular functions produce generalizations of a number of results known in the literature on this subject.

Quasi Regular Functions in Quaternionic Analysis

Abstract:We study a new class of functions that arise naturally in quaternionic analysis, we call them "quasi regular functions". Like the well-known quaternionic regular functions, these functions provide representations of the quaternionic conformal group. However, unlike the regular functions, the quasi regular ones do not admit an invariant unitary structure but rather a pseudounitary equivalent. The reproducing kernels of these functions have an especially simple form: (Z-W)^{-1}. We describe the K-type bases of quasi regular functions and derive the reproducing kernel expansions. We also show that the restrictions of the irreducible representations formed from the quasi regular functions to the Poincare group have three irreducible components.

To do this we develop some aspects of the theory of such polynomials. We then give a number of related multivariate polynomial interpolation schemes for ${\mathbb{R}}^4$ and ${\mathbb{C}}^2$ with good geometric properties, and some aspects of least interpolation and of Kergin interpolation.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to show how the problem of finding the zeros of unilateral n-order quaternionic polynomials can be solved by determining the eigen-vectors of the corresponding companion matrix. This approach, probably superfluous in the case of quadratic equations for which a closed formula can be given, becomes truly useful for (unilateral) n-order polynomials. To understand the strehgth of this method, we compare it with the Niven algorithm and show where this (full) matrix approach improves previous methods based on the use of the Niven algorithm. For the convenience of the readers, we explicitly solve some examples of second and third order unilateral quaternionic polynomials. The leading idea of the practical solution method proposed in this work can be summarized in following three steps: translating the quaternionic polynomial in the eigenvalue problem for its companion matrix, finding its eigenvectors, and, finally, giving the quaternionic solution of the unilateral polynomial in terms of the components of such eigenvectors. A brief discussion on bilateral quaternionic quadratic equations is also presented.

The results include approximation on compact starlike sets and compact axially symmetric sets. Abstract:The k-Cauchy-Fueter complex in quaternionic analysis is the counterpart of the Dolbeault complex in complex analysis. In this paper, we find the explicit transformation formula of these complexes under SL(n+1,ℍ), which acts on ℍ^ n as quaternionic fractional linear transformations. These transformation formulae have several interesting applications to k-regular functions, the quaternionic counterpart of holomorphic functions, and geometry of domains. They allow us to construct the k-Cauchy-Fueter complex over locally projective flat manifolds explicitly and introduce various notions of pluripotential theory on this kind of manifolds. We also introduce a quaternionic projectively invariant operator from the quaternionic Monge-Ampère operator, which can be used to find projectively invariant defining density of a domain, generalizing Fefferman's construction in complex analysis.
Multilinear analysis of quaternion arrays: theory and computation

Abstract:Multidimensional quaternion arrays (often referred to as "quaternion tensors") and their decompositions have recently gained increasing attention in various fields such as color and polarimetric imaging or video processing. Despite this growing interest, the theoretical development of quaternion tensors remains limited. This paper introduces a novel multilinear framework for quaternion arrays, which extends the classical tensor analysis to multidimensional quaternion data in a rigorous manner. Specifically, we propose a new definition of quaternion tensors as $\mathbb{H}\mathbb{R}$-multilinear forms, addressing the challenges posed by the non-commutativity of quaternion multiplication. Within this framework, we establish the Tucker decomposition for quaternion tensors and develop a quaternion Canonical Polyadic Decomposition (Q-CPD). We thoroughly investigate the properties of the Q-CPD, including trivial ambiguities, complex equivalent models, and sufficient conditions for uniqueness. Additionally, we present two algorithms for computing the Q-CPD and demonstrate their effectiveness through numerical experiments. Our results provide a solid theoretical foundation for further research on quaternion tensor decompositions and offer new computational tools for practitioners working with quaternion multiway data.
