Abstract:A series of Co3O4/Ketjen Black cathodes are fabricated by electrostatic spray deposition technique for Li–O2 batteries. A sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction processes is noted either when Co3O4 is lacked or Ketjen Black is insufficient, which leads to much higher overpotentials between charge and discharge profiles. By contrast, with the optimal design in terms of electric conduction and catalytic activity, the Co3O4/Ketjen Black (80 wt%) composite achieves enhanced electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of 2044 mAh g−1 and maintaining 33 cycles at a fixed capacity of 500 mAh g−1. The electrochemical characterization indicates that the improved Li–O2 battery performance may benefit from the highest oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction activity under this electro-chemically optimized composite. This work may shed light on the design principle of future cathode materials for Li–O2 batteries.
Combination of Li-rich layered-oxide with O2 cathodes for high-energy Li-ion/Li-O2 hybrid batteries

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 19, May 2022. The energy density of commercial Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is limited by the specific capacity of intercalation-type cathodes. The Li-O2 batteries based on the conversion reaction of oxygen cathodes can deliver the superhigh specific capacity. Herein, the Li-rich layered-oxide 0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiNi0.54Co0.16Mn0.16O2 (5/5 LLO) cathodes have been combined with O2 cathodes, in order to examine their synergistic effect on cell performance. It is found that the hybrid cells deliver the discharge capacity of 458 mAh [math] at approximately 0.2 C, compared with the specific capacity 200 mAh [math] at 0.2 C of 5/5 LLO in LIB. Meanwhile, the cycle life of Li-O2 batteries under 100% depth of discharge increases from a few cycles to more than 20 cycles, attributed to the transition of Ni2+ to Ni4+ upon charging that promotes decomposition of reaction products Li2O2 and by-products Li2CO3. These results demonstrate that the hybrid Li-ion/Li-O2 battery is a powerful way for combining advantages of the intercalation and conversion-type cathodes, promising for construction of future high-energy batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are gaining increasing research interest due to their combination of the advantages of lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Carbon-metal oxide/hydroxide hybrid materials show great potential as anode materials for LICs, but their specific capacity still needs further improvement to meet future requirements. In this study, a method of incorporating nickel silicate into carbon-metal oxide/hydroxide hybrid materials is recommended to improve their overall lithium-ion storage performance. This method is easily achieved using silicon oxide-containing bamboo leaf-derived carbon (BLC) as a raw material. A novel nickel hydroxide-nickel silicate-carbon hybrid material (NiSiC) can be obtained via the reaction between BLC and nickel nitrate. When employed as a lithium-ion energy storage electrode material, NiSiC exhibits a significantly higher specific capacity and retained capacity after the cycling test, in contrast to BLC, due to the contribution of nickel-based hybrid materials. Of utmost importance, the nickel silicate component of NiSiC is capable of reducing charge transfer resistance, suppressing electrode volume expansion, and introducing silicon to contribute extra capacity. Consequently, compared to a nickel hydroxide-carbon hybrid material (NiC) lacking the nickel silicate component, NiSiC demonstrates remarkable improvements in rate performance, cycling performance, and specific capacity performance. Owing to the excellent performance of NiSiC, a LIC utilizing NiSiC as the anode material demonstrates excellent lithium storage performance and practical application capabilities. A method of incorporating nickel silicate into carbon-metal oxide/hydroxide hybrid materials is recommended to improve their overall lithium-ion storage performance.
High Performance Hybrid Mg-Li Ion Batteries with Conversion Cathodes for Low Cost Energy Storage

Abstract:The recently proposed hybrid Mg-Li ion battery technology delivers good reaction kinetics and excellent safety features because it integrates the advantages of the Mg metal anode and the Li+ ion intercalation/conversion electrodes. The inexpensive and resource-abundant FeS is a suitable candidate as a cathode material due to its medium redox potential and high theoretical capacity; however, a conventional FeS cathode suffers from low electronic conductivity, low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Here, in this work, to overcome these drawbacks, a free-standing membrane electrode with FeS nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers was designed and prepared via a facile electrospinning method. Additionally, because of the absence of inactive materials, such as the current collector and binder, the energy density was enhanced compared with that in the conventional batteries. The hybrid Mg-Li ion battery fabricated in this study can deliver a maximum energy density of similar to 300Wh kg(-1), which is superior to that of most conventional Mg ion batteries. An outstanding cyclic performance for up to 800 cycles with high coulombic efficiencies above 97% was demonstrated, and a specific capacity above 200mAh g(-1) was retained with a current density of 257mA g(-1). On the other hand, there are numerous related works, most of which adopted a "post-combination" strategy, which is not only complicated but also ecologically unpromising for using toxic acid for surface modification of CNTs. Herein, we productively fabricate Co@Co3O4/CNTs nanocomposite with excellent conductivity through arc discharge following low-temperature oxidation in air. As the anode material for LIBs, this nanocomposite shows an exceedingly high reversible capacity of 820 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 after 250 cycles, much higher than its theoretical capacity. The rate performance of the material is also outstanding, with a capacity of 760 mA h g-1 after 350 cycles at 1 A g-1 (103% of the initial capacity) and 529 mA h g-1 after 600 cycles at 2 A g-1. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests are accomplished to disclose the true cause of extra capacity. And for the first time, we propose an "electron-sharing" storage mode, where extra electrons and Li+ can separate and be stored at the interface of cobalt metal/Li2O. This not only gives a reasonable revelation for this unusual capacity exceeding the theoretical value but also directs the capacitor-like electrochemical behavior extra capacity.

Energy-Density Improvement in Li-Ion Rechargeable Batteries Based on LiCoO2 + LiV3O8 and Graphite + Li-Metal Hybrid Electrodes

Abstract:We developed a novel battery system consisting of a hybrid (LiCoO2 + LiV3O8) cathode in a cell with a hybrid (graphite + Li-metal) anode and compared it with currently used systems. The hybrid cathode was synthesized using various ratios of LiCoO2:LiV3O8, where the 80:20 wt% ratio yielded the best electrochemical performance. The graphite and Li-metal hybrid anode, the composition of which was calculated based on the amount of non-lithiated cathode material (LiV3O8), was used to synthesize a full cell. With the addition of LiV3O8, the discharge capacity of the LiCoO2 + LiV3O8 hybrid cathode increased from 142.03 to 182.88 mA h g-1 (a 28.76% improvement). The energy density of this cathode also increased significantly, from 545.96 to 629.24 W h kg-1 (a 15.21% improvement). The LiCoO2 + LiV3O8 hybrid cathode was characterized through X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Its electrochemical performance was analyzed using a battery-testing system and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We expect that optimized synthesis conditions will enable the development of a novel battery system with an increase in energy density and discharge capacity.

Abstract:AbstractLiCoO2 (LCO) is widely applied in today's rechargeable battery markets for consumer electronic devices. However, LCO operations at high voltage are hindered by accelerated structure degradation and electrode/electrolyte interface decomposition. To overcome these challenges, co‐modified LCO (defined as CB‐Mg‐LCO) that couples pillar structures with interface shielding are successfully synthesized for achieving high‐energy‐density and structurally stable cathode material. Benefitting from the “Mg‐pillar” effect, irreversible phase transitions are significantly suppressed and highly reversible Li+ shuttling is enabled. Interestingly, bonding effects between the interfacial lattice oxygen of CB‐Mg‐LCO and amorphous CoxBy coating layer are found to elevate the formation energy of oxygen vacancies, thereby considerably mitigating lattice oxygen loss and inhibiting irreversible phase transformation. Meanwhile, interface shielding effects are also beneficial for mitigating parasitic electrode/electrolyte reactions, subsequent Co dissolution, and ultimately enable a robust electrode/electrolyte interface. As a result, the as‐designed CB‐Mg‐LCO cathode achieves a high capacity and excellent cycle stability with 94.6% capacity retention at an extremely high cut‐off voltage of 4.6 V. These findings provide new insights for cathode material modification methods, which serves to guide future cathode material design.

Hybrid ion/electron interfacial regulation stabilizes the cobalt/oxygen redox of ultrahigh-voltage lithium cobalt oxide for fast-charging cyclability

Abstract:High-voltage and fast-charging LiCoO2 (LCO) is key to high-energy/power-density Li-ion batteries. However, unstable surface structure and unfavorable electronic/ionic conductivity severely hinder its high-voltage fast-charging cyclability. Here, we construct a Li/Na-B-Mg-Si-O-F-rich mixed ion/electron interface network on the 4.65 V LCO electrode to enhance its rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Specifically, the resulting artificial hybrid conductive network enhances the reversible conversion of Co3+/4+/O2-/n- redox by the interfacial ion-electron cooperation and suppresses interface side reactions, inducing an ultrathin yet compact cathode electrolyte interphase. Simultaneously, the derived near-surface Na+/Mg2+/Si4+-pillared local intercalation structure greatly promotes the Li+ diffusion around the 4.55 V phase transition and stabilizes the cathode interface. Finally, excellent 3 C (1 C = 274 mA g-1) fast charging performance is demonstrated with 73.8% capacity retention over 1000 cycles. Our findings shed new insights to the fundamental mechanism of interfacial ion/electron synergy in stabilizing and enhancing fast-charging cathode materials.
High Lithium Storage of Co3O4 Enabled by Integrating Hollow and Porous Carbon Scaffolds

Abstract:The Co3O4, as a potential anode of lithium-ion batteries, has gained considerable attention because of high theoretical capacity. However, the Co3O4 is suffering from serious structure deterioration and rapid capacity fading due to its bulky volume change during cyclic charge/discharge process. Herein, to stabilize the lithium storage performance of the Co3O4 nanoparticles, a characteristic carbon scaffold (HPC) integrating hollow and porous structures has been fabricated by a well-designed method for the first time. The ultrafine Co3O4 nanoparticles are cleverly anchored on the HPC (HPC@Co3O4) and hence achieve significantly improved electrochemical properties including high capacity, improved reaction kinetics and outstanding cycle stability, showing high capacity of 1084.7 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 200 mA g(-1) as well as 681.4 mAh g(-1) after 300 cycles at 1000 mA g(-1). The HPC@Co3O4 therefore shows good promising for application in advanced lithium-ion battery anodes. The results of the systematically material and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the synergistic effects of ultrafine Co3O4 nanoparticles and well-designed HPC scaffolds are responsible for the outstand performance of the HPC@Co3O4 anode. Moreover, this work can enrich the understanding and development of stable and high-performance metal oxide-based lithium-ion battery anodes for advanced lithium storage.

Abstract:With the advantages of high energy density and low manufacture cost, lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs), typically with a layered O3-type structure, are regarded as promising cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but their broad usages are hindered by severe voltage decay over cycling. Although recent progress in O2-type LLOs has aroused interest for their less voltage decay, the critical barrier of unsatisfactory capacity retention has not been overcome yet. To tackle these handicaps, herein we design a new type of LLO (O2/O3-type LLO) with a homogeneous hybrid structure, where the O2 and O3 lattice stacking sequences are arranged alternatively. Benefitting from this novel O2/O3 hybrid structure, the designed material shows greatly improved voltage and capacity stability than that of pure O2- and O3-type LLOs. Revealed by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and operando differential electrochemical mass spectra, the O2/O3-hybrid LLO cathode shows a more reversible structural evolution, smaller volume change and suppressed oxygen loss during the electrochemical processes. Our approach has initiated a new way to reduce the capacity and voltage decay of LLOs, which endows great promise to the development of high-energy-density LIBs.

Abstract:LiCoO2 (LCO), as the commercialized cathode material for battery, suffers from severe structural instability and capacity fading when charged to high voltages (>4.5 V) due to oxygen release and Co dissolution, and subsequent crack formation/electrolyte decomposition. Herein, we constructed a compact SOx-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) involving reversible SO42−/S2O32− redox couple via an additive (bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone)-assisted electrolyte to passivate the cathode surface, thus improving the electrochemical performance of graphite||LCO cells at high voltage. The bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone was found to absorb on the LCO cathode and form a reversible SO42−/S2O32− redox couple, which alleviates oxygen release by continuous reduction/oxidation during the charging/discharging process, thus inhibiting the decomposition of the electrolyte on the catalytic cathode surface. The designed electrolyte endows 4.6 V Li||LCO cell and 4.55 V graphite||LCO cell with high capacity retentions of 88% over 300 cycles and 96% over 150 cycles, respectively. The compact CEI involving reversible redox couple strategy provides new insights towards electrolyte design for high-voltage cathodes and unlocks the limit toward the development of high-energy-density batteries.

Abstract:Low charge storage in intercalation reaction and large volume change induced by conversion reaction greatly limit the practical selection of electrodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Utilizing the synergistic effects of various Li+ storage mechanisms to construct high energy density and long-term cycling cathodes of LIBs is significant and still challenging. Herein, a novel I2-containing viologen-based covalent organic framework coated carbon nanotubes (I-VCOF@CNT) cathode is designed by integrating the advantageous of intercalation and conversion mechanism. Moreover, the framework and pore structure of VCOF are fully utilized for charge storage, which maximizes the utilization of COF structure. Reflected in LIBs, I-VCOF@CNT exhibits high specific capacity, excellent rate performance, and admirable long-term cycling stability. Such design idea can also be applied extensively used in other electrode materials, which provides a new insight for exploring composite materials integrating multiple reaction mechanisms.

To overcome these challenges, co‐modified LCO that couples pillar structures with interface shielding are successfully synthesized for achieving high energy density and structurally stable cathode material. Benefitting from the "Mg‐pillar" effect, irreversible phase transitions are significantly suppressed and highly reversible Li+ shuttling is enabled. Interestingly, bonding effects between the interfacial lattice oxygen of CB‐Mg‐LCO and amorphous CoxBy coating layer were found to elevate the formation energy of oxygen vacancies, thereby considerably mitigating lattice oxygen loss and inhibiting irreversible phase transformation. Meanwhile, interface shielding effects is also beneficial for mitigating parasitic electrode/electrolyte reactions, subsequent Co dissolution, and ultimately enabled a robust electrode/electrolyte interface. As a result, the as‐designed CB‐Mg‐LCO cathode achieves a high capacity and excellent cycle stability with 94.6% capacity retention at an extremely high cut‐off voltage of 4.6 V. Abstract:The aprotic Li‐O2 battery (LOB) has the highest theoretical energy density of any rechargeable batteries. However, such system has been largely restricted by the electrochemically formed lithium peroxide (Li2O2) on the cathode surface, leading ultimately to low actual capacities and early cell death. In contrast to the surface‐mediated growth of thin‐film with thickness less than 50 nm, a non‐crystalline Li2O2 film with thickness of more than 400 nm can be formed via an optimal O‐Ce hybridized electronic structure. Specially, oxygen can react with dissolved cerium cations in the electrolyte via a cerium‐oxygen reaction to form a high‐energy faceted cerium oxide catalyst, which not only generates a great number of non‐saturable active sites, but also erects electron transport bridges between the lattice O and adjacent Ce atoms. Such Ce‐O orbital coupling also forms a direct charge transfer channel from Ce‐4f of CeO2 to O22− ‐π* of Li2O2, eventually leading to submicron‐thick Li2O2 shells via a subsequent lithium‐oxygen reaction. Relying on the above merits, this work unlocks the rechargeable capacities of LOB from restricted 1000 to unprecedented 10 000 mAh g−1 with good cyclabilities and reduced charge‐discharge overpotentials. Abstract:The yolk-shell structure has a unique advantage in lithium-ion batteries applications due to its ability to effectively buffer the volume expansion of the lithiation/delithiation process. However, its development is limited by the low contact point between the core and shell. Herein, we propose a general strategy of simultaneous construction of sufficient reserved space and multi-continuous active channels by pyrolysis of two carbon substrates. A double-shell structure consisting of Co3O4 anchored to hollow carbon sphere and external self-supporting zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) layer was constructed by spray pyrolysis and additional carbon coating in-situ growth. In the process of high-temperature calcination, the carbon and nitrogen layers between the shells separate, creating additional space, while the Co3O4 particles between the shells remain are still in close contact to form continuous and fast electron conduction channels, which can realize better charge transfer. Due to the synergy of these design principles, the material has ultra-high initial discharge capacities of 2,183.1 mAh·g−1 at 0.2 A·g−1 with capacity of 1,121.36 mAh·g−1 after 250 cycles, the long-term capacities retention rate is about 92.4% after 700 cycles at 1 A·g−1. This unique channel-type double-shell structure fights a way out to prepare novel electrode materials with high performance.
