Abstract:Perovskite crystallization and morphology are two essential factors to the photoelectric performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 3D metal-organic assembly [In-2(phen)(3)Cl-6]CH(3)CN2H(2)O (In2) is introduced for the first time into lead iodide precursor to modify the quality of a perovskite thin film through a two-step sequential deposition method. As a result, both the lead iodide and perovskite exhibit improved crystallization and modified morphology. The optimized film presents less trap states and is thus in favor of the charge transfer as well as charge collection. Consequently, open circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor obviously show enhancements from 0.99 to 1.04V and from 0.66 to 0.71, respectively, yielding a significant increase in a power conversion efficiency from 15.41% to 17.15%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic property of In2 can increase the moisture resistance of the perovskite, which offers a simple and effective method to improve the stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Stability and lead toxicity issues of inorganic organic halide lead perovskite solar cells have significantly limited their commercial applications. The nontoxic strontium (Sr) can be a good candidate to reduce lead utilization due to their similar ionic radiuses. Here we uncovered the dramatic influence of Sr element substitution on the optoelectronic properties of perovskite films, including up-shifting conduction band edge energy level, increasing exciton binding energy and trap density states due to the isoelectronic impurity of electric neutral substitution. The incorporation of a small content of Sr (a≤0.05) into the CH3NH3SraPb1−aI3−xClx crystal lattice can act positively impact on material thermal stability and solar cell device output voltage (~1.11V). An overall highly photovoltaic efficiency of ~16.3% was achieved with a planar n-i-p structure of ITO/compact TiO2/CH3NH3SraPb1−aI3−xClx/spiroMeOTAD/Au. Impedance characterization reveals an increased trap states induced by substitution Pb with Sr in the hybrid halide perovskites, and thus provide a deep understanding of the role of external elements on device physics.
Intermixing-seeded growth for high-performance planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells assisted by precursor-capped nanoparticles

Abstract:This work proposes a novel approach to modulate the nucleation and growth of perovskite crystals in planar perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3-xClx) solar cells by intermixing precursor-capped inorganic nanoparticles of PbS. A small amount of dispersed PbS nanoparticles which were covered with perovskite precursor molecules of methylammonium iodide (CH3NH3I, MAI) through the ligand-exchange treatment functioned as effective seed-like nucleation sites to promote the formation of perovskite lattice structures. Through this intermixing-seeded growth technique, substantial morphological improvements, such as increased crystal domains, enhanced coverage, and uniformity, were realized in the perovskite thin films, and the corresponding solar cell devices exhibited a promising power conversion efficiency of 17.4%, showing an enhancement of approximately 25% compared to that of the controlled pristine solar cell device. The substantially enhanced crystal orientation, particularly along the direction perpendicular to the substrate, was evident from the synchrotron-based grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering data. This observation was consistent with the enhanced carrier diffusion lengths and excellent reproducibility of high fill factors of the planar heterojunction perovskite devices fabricated through the proposed technique.
Synergistic Improvement of Perovskite Film Quality for Efficient Solar Cells Via Multiple Chloride Salt Additives

Abstract:Perovskite crystal film quality is critical for obtaining efficient perovskite solar cells. Anti-solvent processing was used for fast crystallization of perovskite precursor film, which can form dense perovskite film. However, the crystals from this method are usually small due to the fast crystal growth process, which could lead to grain boundary recombination. Here, element chloride is introduced to enhance the perovskite layer crystallinity via slowing down the perovskite crystallization process by simultaneous introduction of methylammounium chloride (MACl) and cesium chloride (CsCl) into precursor solution. As a result, we achieve high quality of pin-hole free perovskite film with large crystal size. A power conversion efficiency of 21.55% with free of hysteresis of the device is obtained, which is among the highest efficiency of planar structure perovskite solar cells.
Reproducible One-Step Fabrication of Compact MAPbl(3-x)Cl(x) Thin Films Derived from Mixed-Lead-Halide Precursors

Abstract:Methylammonium lead trihalide perovskites are attracting intensive interest due to its high photovoltaic performance, low cost and one-step solution processability. Since the morphology of the perovskite thin films play the central role on the cell performance, a plethora of methods have been developed to fabricate uniform perovskite film. Herein, we demonstrate that an innovative approach by applying mixed lead salts (PbI2 + PbCl2) to facilitate reproducible fabrication of compact perovskite thin film. It is proposed that rapid reaction kinetics of PbI2 with MAI enables preformation of perovskite within the intermidiate film matrix, working as homogeneously located domains for squential growth of the PbCl2-derived perovskite. The as-prepared perovskite film exhibited a overall textured crystal morphology and superior compactness, which enables excellent light absorption and long-time preservation of photogenerated charge carriers and therefore exhibits 11% efficiency in planar-structured solar cells. The annealing testing shows the film also possesses very stable morphology upon long-time heating, indicative of the insensitivity of our new protocol to the preparation condition and also the promising thermal stability of its based solar cells. The simplicity of the one-step solution-processing and the high morphology stability of the as-prepared perovskite film endow this mixing lead salts method with feasibility of the large-scale fabrication.

Abstract:Organometal halide CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) has been commonly used as the light absorber layer of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and, especially, another halide element chlorine (Cl) has been often incorporated to assist the crystallization of perovskite film. However, in most cases, a predominant MAPbI(3) phase with trace of Cl- is obtained ultimately and the role of Cl involvement remains unclear. Herein, we develop a low-cost and facile method, named hydrochloric acid vapor annealing (HAVA) post-treatment, and realize a rapid conversion of MAPbI(3) to phase-pure MAPbCl(3), demonstrating a new concept of phase engineering of perovskite materials toward efficiency enhancement of PSCs for the first time. The average grain size of perovskite film after HAVA post-treatment increases remarkably through an Ostwald ripening process, leading to a denser and smoother perovskite film with reduced trap states and enhanced crystallinity. More importantly, the generation of MAPbCl(3) secondary phase via phase engineering is beneficial for improving the carrier mobility with a more balanced carrier transport rate and enlarging the band gap of perovskite film along with optimized energy level alignment. As a result, under the optimized HAVA post-treatment time (2 min), we achieved a significant enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the MAPbI(3)-based planar heterojunction-PSC device from 14.02 to 17.40% (the highest PCE reaches 18.45%) with greatly suppressed hysteresis of the current-voltage response.

Abstract:High crystallinity and compactness of the active layer is essential for metal-halide perovskite solar cells. Here, a simple pseudohalide-induced film retreatment technology is developed as the passivation for preformed perovskite film. It is found that the retreatment process yields a controllable decomposition-to-recrystallization evolution of the perovskite film. Corresponding, it remarkably enlarges the grain size of the film in all directions, as well as improving the crystallinity and hindering the trap density. Meanwhile, owing to an intermediate catalytic effect of the pseudohalide compound (NH4SCN), no crystal orientation changing and no impurity introduction in the modified film. By integrating the modified perovskite film into the planar heterojunction solar cells, a champion power conversion efficiency of 19.44% with a stabilized output efficiency of 19.02% under 1 sun illumination is obtained, exhibiting a negligible current density-voltage hysteresis. Moreover, such a facile and low-temperature film retreatment approach guarantees the application in flexible devices, showing a best power conversion efficiency of 17.04%.

Abstract:Methylammoniumn lead iodide perovskites have attracted great attention in photovoltaic research community. In this work, we demonstrate the results of studies focusing on the chemical reaction of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx layer formation during the annealing of perovskite precursor films. We identified two kinds of grain morphologies during the formation of perovskite films grown from non-stoichiometric precursor solution. To form single-phase and high absorbance perovskite films, higher concentration of chloride in precursor solution needs longer annealing time and only a very low Cl content could be incorporated in the final CH3NH3PbI3-xClx films. Adding PbCl2–3CH3NH3I to PbI2–CH3NH3I precursor solution can allow a good control of the growth rate and morphology for the final perovskite film, and is beneficial to the photovoltaic performance of perovskite devices. By employing the precursor solutions of PbCl2, PbI2 and CH3NH3I with a mole ratio of 1:1:4 and inserting an ultrathin amino-functionalized polymer interlayer, we achieved planar perovskite solar cell with maximum power conversion efficiency of over 15%.

Abstract:In planar heterojunction (PHJ) perovskite solar cells (PerSCs) without mesoporous metal oxide skeleton, there is challenge of formation perovskite film with full coverage to the conductive substrate through solution-process the lead halide precursors. Selecting a lead source with more volatile byproducts is an effective approach to obtain much smoother films with smaller and fewer pinholes. Herein, we demonstrate efficient CH3NH3PbI3/PCBM PHJ PerSCs by using lead acetate (Pb(Ac)2) as lead precursor. The morphology of the perovskite thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively, and the crystalline quality of the perovskite films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) was used to investigate the PL lifetime of the perovskite film. The perovskite film derived from Pb(Ac)2 shows enhanced surface coverage and improved photoluminescence lifetime in comparison with PbI2 sourced perovskite film. Averaged over 20 individual devices, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices derived from Pb(Ac)2 reaches 14.81%, much higher than PbI2 sourced devices by one-step (8.23%) or two-step (10.58%) spin-coating.

Abstract:Mixed‐cation lead mixed‐halide perovskite have attracted extensive attention due to their application potential in tandem devices and favorable stability. However, the crystallization of mixed‐component perovskite usually suffers from more complicated phase transition processes, making it difficult to prepare high‐quality perovskite films. Herein, it is demonstrated that, rhodamine 110 chloride (RC110) additive, a commonly used fluorescent dye, plays significant roles in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is shown that the defects can be remarkably reduced by interactions between the defects and the functional groups, the interaction between the RC110 and halogen ions in precursor solution can exert significant effects on the coordination level of lead‐halogen octahedra frameworks, and thereby augments the colloidal size in the precursor solution. Leveraging these benefits, the liquid‐solid coregulation engineering endows high‐quality perovskite films with enhanced crystallinity, lower defects density, reduced nonradiative recombination and prolonged carrier lifetime. Consequently, the RC110 treated planar devices delivered a champion efficiency of 21.02% with negligible hysteresis and exhibited excellent stability. Briefly, this defect passivation strategy based on colloidal coordination engineering provides a novel and feasible route to promote the potential commercialization of PSCs. Exposed the Mechanism of Lead Chloride Dopant for High Efficiency Planar-Structure Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Although the PbCl2 has been exploited to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells, the mechanism of enhancement by the introducing PbCl2 is not fully understudied. In present work, we used the PbCl2 as a dopant to improve the perovskite film quality, we found the crystalline and grain size of perovskite film both increased with 10% molar ratio of PbCl2. The in situ time-resolved grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed that more pre-nucleated suspended in the solution when employed the PbCl2 dopant, leading to high crystalline for perovskite film. An incorporation of the space charge limit current, photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we uncover the function of PbCl2 in reduced trap density, decreased charge recombination and enhanced carrier lifetime. As a result, the efficiency of planar-structure perovskite solar cells based on PbCl2 enhanced to as high as 19.79% with reduced hysteresis, increased by ∼23% compared to the device without PbCl2 (16.05%). We believe that this work would provide a fundamental prospective for mixed perovskite and promote its application in perovskite photovoltaics.
Methylammonium Bromide Assisted Crystallization for Enhanced Lead‐Free Double Perovskite Photovoltaic Performance

Abstract:Cs2AgBiBr6, has recently gained wide attention as a possible alternative to lead‐halide perovskites, considering the nontoxicity and improved stability. However, this double perovskite suffers from defects, especially deep electron traps, severely hampering the photovoltaic performance. This work reports a simple method to control the double perovskite crystallization by adding volatile salts into the precursor solution. X‐ray diffraction patterns reveal that the organic cation with suitable radius (such as methylammonium, MA+) is introduced into the perovskite lattice, forming an organic/inorganic mixed double perovskite intermediate phase. The organic salt is thereafter fully evaporated during high temperature annealing, and the all‐inorganic double perovskite is obtained with dense surface and less pin‐holes. From optical and electrical characterization, it is concluded that the Cs2AgBiBr6 film exhibits high quality, with higher light absorptance and emission. Reduced trap density and longer carrier lifetime are also observed. The improved Cs2AgBiBr6 film is beneficial for efficient carrier collection with suppressed defect‐assisted recombination. With this strategy, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.53% is achieved for the champion Cs2AgBiBr6‐based solar cell device, which is significantly higher compared to the control device with 1.43% PCE. This work is therefore helpful for further improvement of inorganic lead‐free perovskite materials for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The combination of perovskite solar cells and quantum dot solar cells has significant potential due to the complementary nature of the two constituent materials. In this study, solar cells (SCs) with a hybrid CH3 NH3 PbI3 /SnS quantum dots (QDs) absorber layer are fabricated by a facile and universal in situ crystallization method, enabling easy embedding of the QDs in perovskite layer. Compared with SCs based on CH3 NH3 PbI3 , SCs using CH3 NH3 PbI3 /SnS QDs hybrid films as absorber achieves a 25% enhancement in efficiency, giving rise to an efficiency of 16.8%. The performance improvement can be attributed to the improved crystallinity of the absorber, enhanced photo-induced carriers' separation and transport within the absorber layer, and improved incident light utilization. The generality of the methods used in this work paves a universal pathway for preparing other perovskite/QDs hybrid materials and the synthesis of entire nontoxic perovskite/QDs hybrid structure.
High-Performance Simple-Structured Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells Achieved by Precursor Optimization.

Abstract:Planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with perovskite and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) heterojunction have attracted much interest because they can be fabricated by a low-temperature process and exhibit high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Various compositional engineering and interface engineering approaches have been applied to produce high-performance PSC devices. In this study, we found that high-quality lead halide crystal precursor has a significant effect on the perovskite film quality and it could enhance perovskite film light absorption, reduce crystal defects, and suppress charge recombination, resulting in enhanced device performance (from 8.9 to 15.0% for CH3NH3PbI3 and from 14.2 to 18.0% for MA0.7FA0.3PbI3-x Cl x ). Moreover, electron and hole interlayer free devices were achieved by using high-quality PbI2 crystals and the devices exhibited a high PCE of 13.6 and 10.4% for glass and flexible substrates, respectively. This is important for simplifying the perovskite solar cell fabrication process without complex interface engineering involved, especially for printed PSCs.
Ultrasmooth organic–inorganic perovskite thin-film formation and crystallization for efficient planar heterojunction solar cells

Abstract:To date, there have been a plethora of reports on different means to fabricate organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite thin films; however, the inorganic starting materials have been limited to halide-based anions. Here we study the role of the anions in the perovskite solution and their influence upon perovskite crystal growth, film formation and device performance. We find that by using a non-halide lead source (lead acetate) instead of lead chloride or iodide, the perovskite crystal growth is much faster, which allows us to obtain ultrasmooth and almost pinhole-free perovskite films by a simple one-step solution coating with only a few minutes annealing. This synthesis leads to improved device performance in planar heterojunction architectures and answers a critical question as to the role of the anion and excess organic component during crystallization. Our work paves the way to tune the crystal growth kinetics by simple chemistry.

Suppressed phase separation of mixed-halide perovskites confined in endotaxial matrices

Abstract:The functionality and performance of a semiconductor is determined by its bandgap. Alloying, as for instance in In x Ga 1-x N, has been a mainstream strategy for tuning the bandgap. Keeping the semiconductor alloys in the miscibility gap (being homogeneous), however, is non-trivial. This challenge is now being extended to halide perovskites – an emerging class of photovoltaic materials. While the bandgap can be conveniently tuned by mixing different halogen ions, as in CsPb(Br x I 1-x ) 3 , the so-called mixed-halide perovskites suffer from severe phase separation under illumination. Here, we discover that such phase separation can be highly suppressed by embedding nanocrystals of mixed-halide perovskites in an endotaxial matrix. The tuned bandgap remains remarkably stable under extremely intensive illumination. The agreement between the experiments and a nucleation model suggests that the size of the nanocrystals and the host-guest interfaces are critical for the photo-stability. The stabilized bandgap will be essential for the development of perovskite-based optoelectronics, such as tandem solar cells and full-color LEDs.

Abstract:Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, Jiangyou 621908, P. R. China To improve the stability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite, cesium-containing methylammonium lead iodide perovskite have been synthesized by one-step solution deposition. With the increasing of Cs+ doping concentration, direct optical band gap of perovskite was increases, while defects and roughness of perovskite thin films were gradually augmented. A certain amount of Cs+ incorporated in perovskite absorb layer could improve power conversion efficiency through the enhancing of open circuit voltage and fill factor. However, excessive Cs+ doping concentration results in the reduced of short-circuit current and fill factor, which reduced power conversion efficiency. The optimized ratio 10% Cs+ doping achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (16.84%).

Abstract:The film quality of organometallic halide perovskite is very crucial to the performance of planar heterojunction solar cells. Previous methods have generally required a long-time and complex process to control the crystal growth for obtaining a compact and smooth perovskite film. Here, we demonstrate a novel method of growing the high-quality films via a simple and rapid process. Organic cations are used as additives in the solution of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3), which plays a key role in the film-forming process. These organic cations can enhance the film-forming ability and do not lead to a residue in the film end-product. On the basis of these characteristics, highly efficient perovskite solar cells with a simple planar heterojunction structure were achieved. Because the additives can simplify and accelerate the fabrication process and have no chance to induce any negative effect on the device, they will have a large potential in the production of various high-quality perovskite films and low-cost, large-scale, and high-performance devices.
Hybrid Halide Perovskite Solar Cell Precursors: Colloidal Chemistry and Coordination Engineering Behind Device Processing for High Efficiency.

Abstract:The precursor of solution-processed perovskite thin films is one of the most central components for high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. We first present the crucial colloidal chemistry visualization of the perovskite precursor solution based on analytical spectra and reveal that perovskite precursor solutions for solar cells are generally colloidal dispersions in a mother solution, with a colloidal size up to the mesoscale, rather than real solutions. The colloid is made of a soft coordination complex in the form of a lead polyhalide framework between organic and inorganic components and can be structurally tuned by the coordination degree, thereby primarily determining the basic film coverage and morphology of deposited thin films. By utilizing coordination engineering, particularly through employing additional methylammonium halide over the stoichiometric ratio for tuning the coordination degree and mode in the initial colloidal solution, along with a thermal leaching for the selective release of excess methylammonium halides, we achieved full and even coverage, the preferential orientation, and high purity of planar perovskite thin films. We have also identified that excess organic component can reduce the colloidal size of and tune the morphology of the coordination framework in relation to final perovskite grains and partial chlorine substitution can accelerate the crystalline nucleation process of perovskite. This work demonstrates the important fundamental chemistry of perovskite precursors and provides genuine guidelines for accurately controlling the high quality of hybrid perovskite thin films without any impurity, thereby delivering efficient planar perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency as high as 17% without distinct hysteresis owing to the high quality of perovskite thin films.

Abstract:The carrier concentration of the electron-selective layer (ESL) and hole-selective layer can significantly affect the performance of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a facile yet effective two-step method, i.e., room-temperature colloidal synthesis and low-temperature removal of additive (thiourea), to control the carrier concentration of SnO2 quantum dot (QD) ESLs to achieve high-performance PSCs is developed. By optimizing the electron density of SnO2 QD ESLs, a champion stabilized power output of 20.32% for the planar PSCs using triple cation perovskite absorber and 19.73% for those using CH3 NH3 PbI3 absorber is achieved. The superior uniformity of low-temperature processed SnO2 QD ESLs also enables the fabrication of ≈19% efficiency PSCs with an aperture area of 1.0 cm2 and 16.97% efficiency flexible device. The results demonstrate the promise of carrier-concentration-controlled SnO2 QD ESLs for fabricating stable, efficient, reproducible, large-scale, and flexible planar PSCs.
