Abstract:After over forty years' development in an extraordinary speed, the Internet is confronting profoundly different social and economic environments, with the continuously increasing users demands. However, the essence and key designs of the current Internet have remained untouched during the past decades. Over the same years, Internet users have been calling for a better Internet that features significantly improved flexibility, security, mobility and manageability etc. Entering the twenty-first century, researchers from major economies have paid considerable attention to the design and evaluation of the Future Internet, supported by national large-scale efforts such as FIND (Future Internet Design)([1]) in U. S., FIRE (Future Internet Research & Experimentation)([2]) in EU, AKARI in Japan as well as other research programs. Recognizing the significance of those four expected features mentioned before, this paper states a review of major, significant research programs of the Future Internet and presents a brief indication of possible trends in this field.

Abstract:The core concept of software-defined networking(SDN) is three-layer abstraction.We propose a new kind of network architecture,called future network innovation environment(FINE),that is based on SDN.We describe the new forwarding abstraction technology and new open network equipment in FINE and build a network operating system that supports the connection of multiple SDN domains.We build an entire network-level virtualization cloud platform.This allows for unified management and control of open equipment.We also trial new network architectures and IP protocols.

Abstract:EINI, the Environment for Intelligent Network Infrastructure, is a science and technology infrastructure construction project in the field of communications and information system. It is committed to making breakthroughs in core equipment and key technologies of the network and providing large-scale verification environment for the research on the basic theory and critical technology of network architecture, which help to explore scientific model and development mechanism for continuous evolution of the network. EINI will comprehensively enhance the forward-looking research capabilities in the field of network science and technology, This article will give a brief introduction to EINI, including capabilities, architecture and implement of the EINI. At present, the test facility has achieved interoperability between heterogeneous networks and can support various types of experiments and efficiently carry existing network services. In addition, we will show the flow of experiment in EINI.

Abstract:Currently, the research on the security and credibility issues of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) is still insufficient. China has made some progress in the trustworthy NGI area. Institutes including Tsinghua University completed the National 863 High-tech Project, Research on key technologies of trustworthy next generation Internet and application demonstration, which focuses on the security and credibility issues of the current Internet. On this basis of source address validation technology, the project designed and implemented prototype systems of trustworthy Internet infrastructures, security services, and typical applications. The trustworthy NGI is expected to provide support for building of trustworthy computer network applications, trustworthy telecom network applications, and trustworthy IPTV network applications.

Abstract:Intelligent Eco Networking (IEN) makes significant progress to be a shared in-network computing infrastructure towards the future Internet, owing to its value-oriented ideology, content-centric fashion, intelligent collaborative management, and decentralized consensus trust preservation. Comprehensively uniting resources of computing, storage, and network, IEN executes the computing tasks in the network layer with name-based functions, integrating the SDN-like collaborative schedule and coexisting with the current TCP/IP via network slicing. To gradually evolve to be an advanced networking ecosystem, IEN copes with ultra-low latency, massive connections, and large-scale coverage to sustain the new rising information services. The simple evaluations demonstrate the profound potential of IEN in settling the in-network computing, providing the practical foundation for the multimodal computing paradigm in the future Internet.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on recent advances in security and privacy for future intelligent networks. Recent booming advancements in networking techniques have led to an evolution toward future intelligent networks (FINs). This trend takes place under a circumstance in which a great number of devices are connected for specific purposes by a variety of novel techniques. In FINs, we envision the benefits of integrating intelligence into networks. Contemporarily, these emerging techniques are still at the exploration stage, leaving many privacy and security challenges unaddressed. Existing researchers have already uncovered a great amount of attacks and threats. The situation will be more complicated when incorporating artifi cial intelligence (AI) techniques into networking, as AI techniques are facing unknown or new types of privacy and security threats. To tackle the security challenges in the design of FINs, we organize this Special Issue focusing on the security and privacy of future FINs.

Abstract:The Internet has become a major part of the global communications infrastructure supporting modern-day socio-economic development, social progress and technological innovation. Invented 30 years ago, today the Internet is facing severe challenges. Many countries have funded research projects on the new-generation Internet, such as GENI, FIND, FIRE and CNGI, in an effort to solve these challenges. In addition, over the past few years, the networking research community has engaged in an ongoing conversation about how to move the Internet forward, and there are now two different approaches towards Internet research. The first approach is based on using the existing Internet architecture to solve the major technical challenges-this is called 'evolutionary' research. The other, which is called the 'clean slate', involves the design of an entirely new Internet architecture. In the first part of this paper, the basic features of the next generation Internet and its principal contradictions are analysed. Then a survey of recent progress in the study of the next generation Internet in China is discussed. Finally, the focus and direction for the next step in research are presented as based on fundamental research into the international next generation Internet architecture, and the many new innovative demands placed on Internet architecture in recent years.

Abstract:This paper gives a definition of the Industrial Internet and expounds on the academic connotation of the future Industrial Internet. From this foundation, we outline the development and current status of the Industrial Internet in China and globally. Moreover, we detail the avant-garde paradigms encompassed within the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)'s "Future Industrial Internet Fundamental Theory and Key Technologies" research plan and its corresponding management strategies. This research initiative endeavors to enhance interdisciplinary collaborations, aiming for a synergistic alignment of industry, academia, research, and practical implementations. The primary focus of the research plan is on the pivotal scientific challenges inherent to the future industrial internet. It is poised to traverse the "first mile", encompassing foundational research and pioneering innovations specific to the industrial internet, and seamlessly bridges to the "last mile", ensuring the effective commercialization of scientific and technological breakthroughs into tangible industrial market applications. The anticipated contributions from this initiative are projected to solidify both the theoretical and practical scaffolding essential for the cultivation of a globally competitive industrial internet infrastructure in China.

Abstract:To obtain a sustainable competitive advantage and achieve global innovation leadership, firms in China and other emerging economies must develop strong indigenous innovation capabilities through the coevolution of strategy, organization, resources, and culture. Drawing on current innovation management theories and practices, this study proposes four systematic paths for improving firm innovation systems (FISs), namely, the R&D-based internal collaborative FIS, the strategic vision-driven FIS, the open and user-driven FIS, and the holistic ecosystem-driven FIS. This study contributes to the systematic approach for enhancing corporate indigenous innovation capability based on FISs. Moreover, this study provides theoretical and practical insights for China as well as other developing countries to cultivate world-class enterprises and build an innovative nation.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems related to future network innovation,researchers propose numerous solutions.However,these solutions need to be tested in an large-scale network experimental environment,which cannot be totally supported by the current Internet.Thus,constructing a network innovation experimental environment is meaningful for the further develop of the Internet.We propose Tsinghua University Network Innovation Environment(TUNIE),a network innovation experimental environment in China,aiming to support research in future network based on network virtualization.In this paper,we survey the past and the state-of-the-art of network innovation experimental environment,as well as certain key topics.Then we introduce design goals and key technologies of TUNIE.TUNIE is already deployed in several clusters,applied in teaching and research,and supports some network innovation experiments.

Abstract:With the flourishing of Internet application and the growth of computing techniques,customers require Internet with higher and higher performance.Nevertheless,diversified requirement of customers and lacking of elasticity of Internet architecture lead to wasting much Internet resource.The Internet became the bottleneck for further development of Internet service.Based on analysis of the present Internet,we list the fundamental factors that affect its elasticity,and point out that adaptive architecture is the potential development direction for the future Internet and discuss the adaption from the following aspects: the Controllability,the Manageability,the Scalability and the Trustworthy.Moreover,we survey the work about key technologies and architectures of the Adaptive Future Internet in detail,and analyze their advantages and the compatibility.As a result,we present an Adaptive Future Internet Framework(AFIF) which gives a reference for study on Future Internet.

Abstract:The Internet Plus initiative has been integrated into many sectors of the economy and society, which profoundly changes the development model, technology, and forms of various fields and constantly enhances the country’s innovation and competitiveness. The new-generation artificial intelligence technology, new information and communication technologies, and new Internet technologies have been integrated with technologies in various fields, driving the digital transformation and upgrades of these fields and ushering in an Intelligence Plus era which is led by intelligence, driven by data, and featured by ubiquitous interconnection, sharing services, cross-field integration, and mass innovation. Against the backdrop of Intelligence Plus, this study summarizes the development status and problems regarding the Internet Plus initiative in China, expounds its new connotations, and demonstrates the architecture and technology system pedigree framework of the Internet Plus system. Moreover, it analyzes the strategic goals and technological routes of the Internet Plus initiative in the Intelligent Plus era in China and proposes specific project suggestions: strengthening fundamental research in order to make breakthroughs in core technologies and focusing on the in-depth integration of the Internet Plus initiative with different fields such as smart manufacturing, modern agriculture, smart energy, people-benefiting services, smart transportation, and smart environmental protection. We also propose that a systematic policy mechanism should be established to support the Internet Plus initiative, laws and regulations as well as standards systems should be improved, and a cross-border integrated talent training system should be created, hoping to provide theoretical references for the development of the Internet Plus initiative in the Intelligence Plus era in China.
