Abstract:With the fast development of video and voice network applications, CDN (content distribution networks) and P2P (peer-to-peer) content distribution technologies have gradually matured. How to effectively use Internet resources thus has attracted more and more attention. For resource pricing, a whole pricing strategy covers all related topics, including pricing models, service mechanisms and pricing methods. We first introduce three basic Internet resource pricing models through Internet cost analysis. Then, with the evolution of service types, we introduce several corresponding mechanisms which can ensure pricing implementation and resource allocation. On network resource pricing methods, we discuss utility optimization in economics, and emphasize two classes of pricing methods (including system optimization and entities’ strategic optimizations). Finally, we conclude the paper and forecast future directions.

Abstract:This article provides a systematic review of cloud pricing in an interdisciplinary approach. It examines many historical cases of pricing in practice and tracks down multiple roots of pricing in research. The aim is to help both cloud service provider (CSP) and cloud customers to capture the essence of cloud pricing when they need to make a critical decision either to achieve competitive advantages or to manage cloud resource effectively. Currently, the number of available pricing schemes in the cloud market is overwhelming. It is an intricate issue to understand these schemes and associated pricing models clearly due to involving several domains of knowledge, such as cloud technologies, microeconomics, operations research, and value theory. Some earlier studies have introduced this topic unsystematically. Their approaches inevitably lead to much confusion for many cloud decision-makers. To address their weaknesses, we present a comprehensive taxonomy of cloud pricing, which is driven by a framework of three fundamental pricing strategies that are built on nine cloud pricing categories. These categories can be further mapped onto a total of 60 pricing models. Many of the pricing models have been already adopted by CSPs. Others have been widespread across in other industries. We give descriptions of these model categories and highlight both advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, this article offers an extensive survey of many cloud pricing models that were proposed by many researchers during the past decade. Based on the survey, we identify four trends of cloud pricing and the general direction, which is moving from intrinsic value per physical box to extrinsic value per serverless sandbox. We conclude that hyper-converged cloud resources pool supported by cloud orchestration, virtual machine, Open Application Programming Interface, and serverless sandbox will drive the future of cloud pricing.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on applications of economic and pricing models for resource management in cloud networking. To achieve sustainable profit advantage, cost reduction, and flexibility in provisioning of cloud resources, resource management in cloud networking requires adaptive and robust designs to address many issues, e.g., resource allocation, bandwidth reservation, request allocation, and workload allocation. Economic and pricing models have received a lot of attention as they can lead to desirable performance in terms of social welfare, fairness, truthfulness, profit, user satisfaction, and resource utilization. This paper reviews applications of the economic and pricing models to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for resource management in cloud networking. Besides, we survey a variety of incentive mechanisms using the pricing strategies in sharing resources in edge computing. In addition, we consider using pricing models in cloud-based Software Defined Wireless Networking (cloud-based SDWN). Finally, we highlight important challenges, open issues and future research directions of applying economic and pricing models to cloud networking

Abstract:Shared-parking lot brings utilization improvement, but also has its disadvantage compared with traditional parking lot while they are competing for public users. In the market including both shared-parking lot and traditional parking lot, parking lot operators need to know how to deal with parking price to be competitive in the market. The Hotelling model is applied in this paper to study the product differentiation of traditional parking lot and shared-parking lot, with some equilibrium analyses to figure out equilibrium parking prices of both parking lots while considering their competition in the market. Two points of indifferent consumers exist in the competition of the traditional parking lot and the shared- parking lot.

Abstract:We propose a novel pricing incentive mechanism supporting load balancing and allocating network resource efficiently for QoS-enabled networks. In this paper, we integrate the proposed pricing with QoS routing and present a novel pricing incentive mechanism meeting the QoS requirements of application. This mechanism provides a equitable pricing incentive for applications to according to their service requests. We study the pricing and different levels of services in detail and integrate admission control scheme and load balancing in our framework. By theoretical analysis and extensive simulations, we prove its effectiveness in making traffic load balancing and providing an incentive for users to utilize network resources for users'satisfaction.
Pricing model of time-of-use electricity tariff considering customers classified by load factor

Abstract:There is coordination problem between load factor price and peak-valley time-of-use price (TOU) of large and medium industrial and commercial users. Therefore, combining with the electricity power system and environment in China, this paper bases on the users demand and supply cost otherness to build the power consumption market segment and demand-price elastic model of load factor classification. Time-of-use electricity pricing model considering customers classified by load factor is settled applying the marginal cost pricing theory. The model adopts the method of hierarchical coordination optimization. The first layer applies the density clustering and two-part price theory to analyze the marginal electricity and capacity cost of each load factor block, and formulate the method for load factor classification and pricing average price for each one. The second layer takes the average price level of each block as constraint and cutting peak load to fill valley as the goal, then sets coordination optimization model of TOU tariff with load factor block based on the electric price elasticity matrix. This model coordinates multiple targets such as efficiency, fairness and peak load shifting. Its rationality and validity are validated by one case.
A Pricing Strategy for D2D Communication from a Prospect Theory Perspective

Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communication is efficient in traffic offloading in terms of transmission rate, energy cost, spectrum usage and etc. However, its unstable performance caused by spectrum reuse can drive users away, particularly when D2D users (DUs) are served as secondary users in cellular networks. Their low expectations on D2D services and frequent mode switch can block efficient D2D offloading, cause severe network congestion and result in poor quality of experience (QoE), especially in densely populated area. Hence, in this study, more than reducing the price to attract users, we propose a quality of service (QoS)- insured pricing strategy to promote D2D communication. In specific, to model users' decision-making process under the uncertainty of D2D performance, we introduce Prospect theory (PT) that captures irrational factors such as reference point, probability distortion and risk-aversion. Then, we design an insurance contract with terms of service price and insured QoS level to popularize D2D services and optimize operator's profit. Based on theoretical analysis, we propose an optimal QoS-insure pricing strategy algorithm, and discuss the practical implementation of the proposed strategy. The simulation results demonstrate the impacts of operation settings, individual irrationality and network conditions on operator's net profit from D2D offloading, and show the efficiency of the proposed strategy.
Effects of Pricing Schemes and Platform Types on Platform-Based Logistics Services.

Abstract:This study investigates the optimization of cooperation between B2B platform and 3PL for platform-based logistics services. In view of two pricing schemes (i.e., reseller and MSP modes) and two platform types (i.e., decentralized and centralized platforms), we use game theory and propose four pricing models to explore the interactions between the platform and 3PL under different scenarios. Optimal solutions of four analytical models are provided. By comparison analyses, we evaluate the effects of pricing schemes on the service prices and performance of both players. We find that the switch from the reseller mode to the MSP mode does not influence the service price of decentralized platforms, but it increases that of centralized platforms. The decentralized platform always chooses the MSP mode to improve profit, whereas the centralized platform will adopt the reseller mode to achieve higher social welfare. Conversely, their logistics partners have the opposite preferences. We also evaluate the effects of platform types on service prices. Results show that users of the centralized platform can pay less on logistics services than those of the decentralized platform. In addition, the preference of 3PLs on platform types is significantly influenced by the loyalty type of users and their attitude to the platform channel.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of consumers for diversified network services, more and more network service providers are competing fiercely in providing network composite services in order to meet the market demand. Network composition service is the most basic service. According to certain rules, it synthesizes new services and then realizes new functions. At present, the pricing of service composition by network service providers in the market is not scientific, meanwhile random and temporary pricing is still relatively common. In order to scientifically guide network service providers to price composite service scientifically and effectively, improve the profit of service providers, and meet the maximum service demand of consumers. Based on the theory of market demand price, this paper applies the pricing model in supply chain management to the pricing link of composite service network. From the perspective of network service providers, a two-objective competitive pricing model is constructed, and the simulation example analysis and sensitivity test are carried out. The simulation results show that the composite service provided by network service providers satisfy the general market demand price theory. In order to help service providers make scientific decisions on price adjustment of network services, this paper also makes sensitivity analysis of market demand on price changes. The research shows that the composite service provided by network service providers satisfy the general market demand price theory, while adjusting the price can only meet the general market demand price change theory if the original price is less than half of the original price.

Abstract:Cloud computing is an evolutionary technology that offers on-demand resources and elastic services through the Internet. Most providers adopt fixed-price mechanisms (e.g. pay-as-you-go). However, a few providers have recently employed auction-like approaches to price cloud services. Meanwhile, cloud consumers pay more attention to Quality of Service (QoS) such as availability, which measures how well a service is performed. This paper proposes a novel auction approach that can efficiently allocate resources according to customers' QoS preferences. The QoS-based pricing can generate more revenue than a fixed-price strategy. This research lies at the intersection of cloud computing, economics, and information systems.

Abstract:With the rise in popularity of e-books, there is a growing need to reexamine the pricing strategy in the e-book supply chain. In this paper, we study two forms of pricing models widely used in the book industry: wholesale and agency pricing models. We first assume a stylized deterministic demand model in which the demand depends on the price, the degree of substitution, and the overall market potential. Subsequently, we employ the game theory to determine the price equilibriums and profit distribution under different pricing models. Finally, we explore the behavior of the publisher and the retailer under different preferences and degrees of substitution through a computational study. Our findings indicate that the e-book price will be lower under the agency pricing model than under the wholesale pricing model, which is counterintuitive. The publishers have higher incentives to adopt the agency pricing model than the wholesale pricing model. The agency pricing model benefits the whole system and can provide readers with books at lower prices. The degree of substitution between the two forms of books and the readers’ preference toward e-book will affect the books’ price and the profit distribution between the publisher and the retailers.

Abstract:We study pricing strategies of competing firms selling heterogeneous products to consumers. Goods are substitutes and there are network externalities between neighboring consumers. In equilibrium, firms price discriminate based on the network positions and charge lower prices to more central consumers. We also show that, under some conditions, firms' equilibrium profits decrease when either the network becomes denser or network effects increase. In contrast, consumers always benefit from being more connected to each other. We determine the optimal network structure and compare uniform pricing and discriminatory pricing from the perspectives of firms and consumers.

Abstract:Evaluation on implementing congestion pricing policy includes two sides: one is evaluation concentrated on the public policy economy environment and the technical feasibility of the pricing mode;the other side focuses on evaluating the network performance inside and outside the pricing areas under the congestion pricing.Both evaluations are important for traffic management decision.This paper's research focuses on the latter.Based on the traffic network analysis theory,this paper models the network performance changing under congestion pricing and presents some evaluation indexes.A simple numerical computational case study demonstrates the reasonability of the evaluation model and algorithm,which also indicates the network traffic pattern transforming mechanism inside and outside the pricing areas under congestion pricing.

Abstract:Pricing in markets characterized by network effects is a topic that has recently been attracting considerable interest from researchers in both marketing and economics. Early literature on static pricing under network effects focused on the importance of consumer expectations and the multiple equilibria problem. In a dynamic setting, penetration pricing has been found to be optimal under various scenarios. After reviewing the analytical literature on pricing under network effects, we discuss its connections to other literatures. Empirical studies have been relatively scarce. One obstacle is the computational burden in solving for the optimal pricing policies. We illustrate the issues involved in empirical studies and suggest directions for future research.

Abstract:The evaluation of Internet QoS (Quality of Service) is naturally multi-discipline. This paper examines the Internet QoS evaluation by integrating QoS index with price factor. The multinomial logit model is adopted in this paper, which is used to model the choice behaviour of users. Each service class is modelled as independently competitive entity. The goal of each service class is to maximize its own utility. Through the analysis based on noncooperative game, the conclusion is drawn that the equilibria exist between QoS index and price of each service class, and the numerical results is provided to verify the conclusion.

Through the modeling of the Internet service market, service composition and the users, the bargaining in the exclusive monopoly market and the dynamic game procedure in the oligopoly market were analyzed by using the non-cooperative game theory.
