Abstract:The major factors affecting desorption behavior, such as pH, and competitive cations (Cu2+ and Zn2+) were studied to understand mechanisms of adsorption and desorption of Pb in two variable charge soils (RAR and REQ). The results indicated that lead adsorption in both soils was well described by the Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum Pb adsorption capacity of RAR and REQ were 10 899 mg·kg-1 and 6 195 mg·kg-1, respectively. And the pH of adsorption equilibrium solution decreased with the increase of lead adsorption. The amount of Pb desorbed decreased with increasing pH, especially the pH values between 1.00 to 4.00. The pH of the desorption equilibrium solution changed little at this range. When pH was below 4.00, the desorption equilibrium solution did not increase with the increase of system pH but leveled off at 4.40 to 5.60. The amount of desorbed Pb increased with the amounts of Cu2+ and Zn2+ added. And furthermore, the effect of Cu2+ was greater than Zn2+ at the same ion concentration. The desorption rate of RAR and REQ increased from 9.6% and 15.9% to 83.8% and 98.2%, respectively with Cu2+ concentration increased from 0 mmol·L-1 to 20 mmol·L-1, and the corresponding values were up to 81.2% and 89.9%, respectively for Zn2+.
