Abstract:Rhodium has been proved to possess unique reactivity to convert NOx into N2 with high conversion efficiency and selectivity. In this study, we have carried out DFT calculations on the reaction mechanism in the reduction of NO by CO on the surface of the Rh7+ cluster. The calculated results suggest that the reaction proceeds via three steps. First, the NO and CO are adsorbed on the Rh7+ cluster, then the adsorbed NO decomposes to N and O atoms. The O atom reacts with the adsorbed CO leading to the formation of CO2 molecule. Second, another NO is adsorbed on the rhodium cluster and decomposes to N and O atoms, then the two N atoms couple with each other to yield N2 molecule. Finally, the second CO can be adsorbed on the Rh1 or Rh7 atom of the Rh7+ cluster and oxidized to CO2 molecule. On the basis of present calculations from gas-phase Gibbs free energy profiles, the reaction path related to CO adsorption on the Rh7 atom is energetically more favorable. Density Functional Theory Study of CO2 Hydrogenation on Transition-Metal-Doped Cu(211) Surfaces

Abstract:The massive emission of CO2 has caused a series of environmental problems, including global warming, which exacerbates natural disasters and human health. Cu-based catalysts have shown great activity in the reduction of CO2, but the mechanism of CO2 activation remains ambiguous. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu(211)-Rh, Cu(211)-Ni, Cu(211)-Co, and Cu(211)-Ru surfaces. The doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru was found to enhance CO2 hydrogenation to produce COOH. For CO2 hydrogenation to produce HCOO, Ru plays a positive role in promoting CO dissociation, while Rh, Ni, and Co increase the barriers. These results indicate that Ru is the most effective additive for CO2 reduction in Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru alters the electronic properties of Cu, and the activity of Cu-based catalysts was subsequently affected according to differential charge analysis. The analysis of Bader charge shows good predictions for CO2 reduction over Cu-based catalysts. This study provides some fundamental aids for the rational design of efficient and stable CO2-reducing agents to mitigate CO2 emission.

Abstract:The thermal gas-phase catalytic reduction of N2O by CO, mediated by the transition-metal nitride cluster ion [NbN](+), has been explored by using FT-ICR mass spectrometry and complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the [Nb](+)/[NbO](+) and [NbO](+)/[Nb(O)(2)](+) systems, in which the oxidation of [Nb](+) and [NbO](+) with N2O is facile, but in which neither [NbO](+) nor [Nb(O)(2)](+) react with CO at room temperature, the [NbN](+)/[ONbN](+) system at ambient temperature mediates the catalytic oxidation of CO. The origins of the distinctly different reactivities upon nitrogen ligation are addressed by quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:The reactivity of the reduction of NO pre-adsorbed on Rh 2–9 + clusters by CO was investigated using a combination of an alternate on–off gas injection method and thermal desorption spectrometry. The reduction of Rh n N x O y + clusters by CO was evaluated by varying the CO concentration at T = 903 K. Among the Rh n N x O x + clusters, the Rh 3 N 2 O 2 + cluster exhibited the highest reduction activity, whereas the other clusters, Rh 2,4–9 N x O x + , showed lower reactivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for Rh 3 + and Rh 6 + revealed that the rate-determining step for NO reduction in the presence of CO was NO bond dissociation through the kinetics analysis using the RRKM theory. The reduction of Rh 3 N 2 O 2 + is kinetically preferable to that of Rh 6 N 2 O 2 + . The DFT results were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The transition metal rhodium has been proved the effective catalyst to convert from NO(x) to N(2.) In the present work, we are mainly focused on the NO adsorption and decomposition reaction mechanism on the surface of the Rh(7)(+) cluster, and the calculated results suggest that the reaction can proceed via three steps. First, the NO can adsorb on the surface of the Rh(7)(+) cluster; second, the NO decomposes to N and O atoms; finally, the N atom reacts with the second adsorbed NO and reduces to a N(2) molecule. The N-O bond breaks to yield N and O atoms in the second step, which is the rate-limiting step of the whole catalytic cycle. This step goes over a relatively high barrier (TS(12)) of 39.6 kcal/mol and is strongly driven by a large exothermicity of 55.1 kcal/mol during the formation of stable compound 3, accompanied by the N and O atoms dispersed on the different Rh atoms of the Rh(7)(+) cluster. In addition, the last step is very complex due to the different possibilities of reaction mechanism. On the basis of the calculations, in contrast to the reaction path II that generates N(2) from two nitrogen atoms coupling, the reaction path I for the formation of intermediate N(2)O is found to be energetically more favorable. Present work would provide some valuable fundamental insights into the behavior of the nitric oxide adsorption and reduction reaction mechanism on the Rh(7)(+) cluster.

Abstract:The reactivity of nitrogen oxide, NO, as a ligand in complexes with [Fe2-S2] and [Co2-S2] non-planar rhombic cores is examined by density functional theory (DFT). The cobalt-containing nitrosyl complexes are less stable than the iron complexes because the Co-S bonds in the [Co2-S2] core are weakened upon NO coordination. Various positions of NO were examined, including its binding to sulfur centers. The release of NO molecules can be monitored photochemically. The ability of NO to form a (NO)2 dimer provides a favorable route of electrochemical reduction, as protonation significantly stabilizes the dimeric species over the monomers. The quasilinear dimer ONNO, with trans-orientation of oxygen atoms, gains higher stability under protonation and reduction via proton–electron transfer. The first two reduction steps lead to an N2O intermediate, whose reduction is more energy demanding: in the two latter reaction steps the highest energy barrier for Co2S2(CO)6 is 109 kJ mol−1, and for Fe2S2(CO)6, it is 133 kJ mol−1. Again, the presence of favorable light absorption bands allows for a photochemical route to overcome these energy barriers. All elementary steps are exothermic, and the final products are molecular nitrogen and water.

Abstract:The shape dependence of the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide by carbon monoxide on rhodium nanopolyhedra and nanocubes was studied from 230 to 270 °C. The nanocubes are found to exhibit higher turnover frequency and lower activation energy than the nanopolyhedra. These trends are compared to previous studies on Rh single crystals.

Abstract:Developing an efficient catalyst is the key to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by CO (CO‐SCR) to simultaneously address the pollution of toxic NOx and CO. Herein, a novel Rh/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalyst is designed and synthesized, featuring Rh species in the form of single atoms (Rh1) and clusters (Rhn). This catalyst overcomes the inhibitory effects of oxygen, achieving low‐temperature NO conversion. The investigation substantively contributes insights into the strategic manipulation of active metal components, emphasizing the potential of single‐atom/cluster catalysts to enhance efficiency. The Rh/TiO2/Ti catalyst has demonstrated exceptional catalytic efficacy, achieving 100% NO conversion at a low temperature of 190 °C in the presence of oxygen. Additionally, it exhibits remarkable stability and water resistance for practical applications. Moreover, comprehensive characterization confirms that Rh clusters and single‐atom sites play an important role in the selective adsorption of NO and CO molecules, promoting the formation of –N2O species and ultimately resulting in the complete conversion of NO and CO to N2 and CO2. This study not only provides valuable guidance for designing high‐performance CO‐SCR catalysts but also underscores the potential of single atoms/clusters catalytic systems in both fundamental research and industrial catalysis.

Abstract:A fundamental understanding on the dynamically structural evolution of catalysts induced by reactant gases under working conditions is challenging but pivotal regarding catalyst design. Herein, in combination with the newly developed mass spectrometer coupled with the double ion trap reactors, cryogenic photoelectron imaging spectroscopy, and quantum‐chemical calculations, we identified that NO adsorption on rhodium‐cerium bimetallic oxide cluster RhCeO2‒ can create a Ce3+ ion in product RhCeO2NO‒ that serves as the starting point to trigger the catalysis of NO reduction by CO. Theoretical calculations substantiated that the reduction of another two NO molecules into N2O takes place exclusively on the Ce3+ ion while Rh behaves like a promoter to buffer electrons and cooperates with Ce3+ to drive NO reduction. Our finding demonstrates the importance of NO in regulating the catalytic behavior of Rh under reaction conditions and provides much‐needed insights into the essence of NO reduction over Rh/CeO2, one type of the most efficient components in three‐way catalysts for NO x removal.

Highly Active Subnanometer Rh Clusters Derived from Rh-doped SrTiO3 for CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Sub-nanometer Rh clusters derived from Rh-doped SrTiO3, demonstrated by in-situ X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) measurements, are applied as highly active catalysts for CO2 reduction. Compared to the supported Rh/SrTiO3, the catalyst synthesized by a doping-segregation method exhibits a higher space-time yield (STY) to CO with a selectivity of 95% for CO2 reduction by hydrogen; it also shows a higher activity with a larger turnover frequency (TOF) for CO2 reduction by ethane. According to the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments, the higher CO selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation is attributed to the lower CO binding strength resulted by the strong interactions (e.g., charge transfer) between Rh atoms and the oxide support with surface defects. The superior activity is suggested to be originated from the cooperative effect between the highly dispersed sub-nanometer Rh clusters for efficient dissociation of H-2/C2H6 and the reconstructed SrTiO3 with oxygen vacancies for preferential adsorption/activation of CO2. The doping-segregation method provides a unique opportunity to tune the size of active metal clusters and the physicochemical properties of the oxide support, offering the potential for applications in a variety of chemical reactions.
CO Oxidation Promoted by NO Adsorption on RhMn 2 O 3 – Cluster Anions

Abstract:CO oxidation represents an important model reaction in the gas phase to provide a clear structure-reactivity relationship in related heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, in combination with mass spectrometry experiments and quantum-chemical calculations, we identified that the RhMn2O3- cluster cannot oxidize CO into gas-phase CO2 at room temperature, while the NO preadsorbed products RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] are highly reactive in CO oxidation. This discovery is helpful to get a fundamental understanding on the reaction behavior in real-world three-way catalytic conditions where different kinds of reactants coexist. Theoretical calculations were performed to rationalize the crucial roles of preadsorbed NO where the strongly attached NO on the Rh atom can greatly stabilize the products RhMn2O2-[(NO)1,2] during CO oxidation and at the same time works together with the Rh atom to store electrons that stay originally in the attached CO2- unit. The leading result is that the desorption of CO2, which is the rate-determining step of CO oxidation by RhMn2O3-, can be greatly facilitated on the reactions of RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] with CO.

Abstract:Through DFT calculations, the detailed mechanism of the catalytic NO + CO reaction, a prototypical system with great practical applications especially in the automobile-exhaust aftertreatment, was determined on Rh(100) and Rh(111). The elementary steps and their energy evolution were revealed. These steps include NO dissociation, N-2 formation through N recombination, CO2 formation, and N2O formation, transformation, and dissociation. The reaction steps of NO2 formation and direct reaction between NO and CO were also studied, and were verified to be relatively insignificant in this reaction system. Results shed light on the atomic-level origin why Rh(100) is more active for this reaction system and more selective for the production of N-2 versus N2O compared with Rh(111). Meanwhile, the preference between the two routes for N-2 production, i.e., N atoms recombination and N2O as intermediate, was found to be dependent on the distribution of surface species and the interaction among them intricately. Catalysis of Cu Cluster for NO Reduction by CO: Theoretical Insight into the Reaction Mechanism

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations here elucidated that Cu38-catalyzed NO reduction by CO occurred not through NO dissociative adsorption but through NO dimerization. NO is adsorbed to two Cu atoms in a bridging manner. NO adsorption energy is much larger than that of CO. N-O bond cleavage of the adsorbed NO molecule needs a very large activation energy (ΔG°‡). On the other hand, dimerization of two NO molecules occurs on the Cu38 surface with small ΔG°‡ and very negative Gibbs reaction energy (ΔG°) to form ONNO species adsorbed to Cu38. Then, a CO molecule is adsorbed at the neighboring position to the ONNO species and reacts with the ONNO to induce N-O bond cleavage with small ΔG°‡ and very negative ΔG°, leading to the formation of N2O adsorbed on Cu38 and CO2 molecule in the gas phase. N2O dissociates from Cu38, and then it is readsorbed to Cu38 in the most stable adsorption structure. N-O bond cleavage of N2O easily occurs with small ΔG°‡ and significantly negative ΔG° to form the N2 molecule and the O atom adsorbed on Cu38. The O atom reacts with the CO molecule to afford CO2 and regenerate Cu38, which is rate-determining. N2O species was experimentally observed in Cu/γ-Al2O3-catalyzed NO reduction by CO, which is consistent with this reaction mechanism. This mechanism differs from that proposed for the Rh catalyst, which occurs via N-O bond cleavage of the NO molecule. Electronic processes in the NO dimerization and the CO oxidation with the O atom adsorbed to Cu38 are discussed in terms of the charge-transfer interaction with Cu38 and Frontier orbital energy of Cu38.

Crystal-plane Effects on Surface and Catalytic Properties of Cu2O Nanocrystals for NO Reduction by CO

Abstract:In this work, Cu2O rhombic dodecahedrons {1 1 0}, octahedrons {1 I 1} and cubes {1 0 0} were synthesized to study the crystal-plane effects on surfaces and catalytic properties in NO + CO reaction. TPR results demonstrated the reducibility was ranked by {1 1 0}> {1 1 1} > {1 0 0}. Interestingly, the activity order in NO+ CO reaction was well consistent with the reducibility order. Moreover, the in-situ formed metallic Cu nanoparticles affected by Cu2O exposed crystal planes were found on surfaces during the process. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) studies revealed that the Mars van Krevelen mechanism worked in this system and the adsorption/dissociation of NO was the key step. Dodecahedral Cu2O {1 1 0} with better reducibility was more sensitive to the NO + CO reaction, and the generated interface between Cu and Cu2O{1 1 0} was beneficial to the effective decomposition of adsorbed NO species. Abstract:The electrochemical NO reduction reaction (NORR) to NH 3 offers an efficient, environmentally friendly strategy for NO removal and NH 3 production, but developing effective catalysts to facilitate the conversion of NO into NH 3 remains a challenge. Single-cluster catalysts (SCCs) with multi-metallic sites show promise due to the synergistic interactions among the active atoms. Herein, utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and grand-canonical DFT (GC-DFT), we systematically investigated the potential of late transition metal (TM = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt) clusters on graphdiyne (TM x /GDY, x = 1–5) for NORR. Ni 3 /GDY, Pd 3 /GDY, and Pt 3 /GDY emerged as the most promising candidates, demonstrating stability, excellent NORR activity, and HER suppression. Their outstanding performance is attributed to the moderate adsorption of NO, with the dxz/dyz orbitals playing a key role in NO activation. GC-DFT results highlight nonlinear variation of intermediate grand free energies with the applied potential. Detailed electronic property analyses were conducted to reveal the charge effects induced by the applied chemical potential. This study provides valuable insights into SCC-catalyzed NO reduction and highlights the significance of potential effects in theoretical simulations of electrochemical systems.

Abstract:The dissociation of environmentally hazardous NO through dissociative adsorption on metallic clusters supported by oxides, is receiving growing attention. Building on previous research on monometallic M 13 clusters [J. Phys. Chem. C, 2019, 123(33), 20314‐20318], this work considers bimetallic Pt 12 M (M = Rh, Ru or Ir) clusters. The adsorption energy and activation energy of NO dissociation on the clusters have been calculated in vacuum using Koh,‐Sham DFT, while their trends were rationalized using reactivity indices such as molecular electrostatic potential and global Fermi softness. The results shown that doping of the Pt clusters lowered the adsorption energy as well as the activation energy for NO dissociation. Furthermore, reactivity indices were calculated as a first estimate of the performance of the clusters in realistic amorphous silica pores (MCM‐41) through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:Catalytic NO reduction by CO into N(2) and CO(2) is imperative owing to the increasingly rigorous emission regulation. Abstract:Exploring the unique catalytic properties of gold clusters associated with specific nano-architectures is essential for designing improved catalysts with a high mass-specific activity. We investigate the geometric and electronic structure of hexadecagold clusters in which Rh was doped. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the resulting neutral and negatively charged Rh-doped Au-16 clusters are stable and bind CO and O-2 stronger than Au-16. Consequently, activation barriers for CO oxidation are lowered. Microkinetics simulations predict especially negatively charged Rh-doped Au-16 clusters to exhibit very high CO oxidation activity, already at sub-ambient temperature. Our findings highlight the promise of alloying gold clusters with more reactive transition metals and the importance of charge transfer from the support in heterogeneous gold systems in catalyzing CO oxidation.
