Abstract:Along with the development of high energy or high power lasers,especially laser weapon and lasers for controlled nuclear fusion,the laser induced damage threshold of the optical films gradually becomes the bottleneck against the development of the lasers,which is of considerable interest from the world.Laser induced damage mechanism of optical films,test flat and method for laser induced damage threshold were expatiated.The development of researches on the technologies and methods for laser damage resistance of optical films at home and abroad,which included ion beam pretreatment,ion beam or anneal treat-ment,pretest coating with the materials of high refractive index and so on,were analyzed.The pulsed laser deposition with mag-netic filter technology was emphasized in the expectation,and the atom layer deposition was advised to accelerate to develop, which supplied the theoretic base to improve the laser damage resistance of optical films to settle for current requirements.

Abstract:Multi-spectral antireflective coating (AR) was deposited by electron beam evaporation on MgO doped LiNbO3 crystal, and the transmission band of the coating is 1.064 μm, 1.4-1.6 μm and 3.5-4.3 μm. The laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of un-coated and AR-coated samples were measured. The AR-coated samples have a better LIDT than un-coated crystal.

Abstract:Antireflection coatings with sapphire-like hardness are highly desired in advanced engineering applications. Currently, classic (LH)^n structures based on Si3N4/SiO2 stacks are widely used to obtain high optical transparency and surface hardness in industry. However, it still suffers from low durability and multiple failures after wear and scratch tests. Herein, we selected Ta2O5/Si3N4 nanolaminates to fabricate toughened AR coatings with similar refractive indices, overcoming the brittleness of thick nitride films. Furthermore, we proposed another graded AR coating, using a"Step up-step down" method to combine the hardness gradient structure with optical design. The toughened AR coating exhibited a low reflectance of 0.8% (420-780 nm) and a remarkable hardness of 22.8 GPa, meanwhile demonstrating the ability to withstand abrasion from steel wool up to 3,000 times. The graded AR coating achieves high transparency (Tave>98.8%, 420-720 nm), high surface hardness (H>23 GPa), and low residual stress (~680 MPa). Notably, no additional damage was observed during 6 months after the scratch test, such as cracking, peeling, and delamination.

Abstract:Thermal response of three kinds of mid-infrared high reflectance coatings exposed with laser beam at wavelength of 4.3μm was studied by numerical method.In this paper,incident beam was modeled as a tapered wave with a Gaussian spectrum.Joule loss induced by absorption of the absorptive layers was calculated analytically and temperature profile of multilayer was presented.The temperature rise of all-dielectric multilayer mirrors is significantly lower than multilayer dielectric enhancement of a highly reflecting metallic mirror.The high reflectance coating with laser beam illuminating perpendicularity to the surface of coating has higher temperature peaks than the coating working under 45o incident laser beam.

Abstract:Wide-angle and broadband antireflection (AR) coating is of the essence in modern optical systems in many fields, which has a great influence on the stray light and imaging quality. A simple and convenient manufacturing method is proposed to address this issue based on a composite coating combining the nano-tapered Al2O3•xH2O (AH) structure and high-low index thin film stack. The optical properties of nano-tapered AH structure at various thickness are first studied and modeled in optics by several homogeneous sub-layers with the graded equivalent index. The designed composite AR coatings are manufactured by vacuum deposition and wet etching subsequently in the hot deionized water. Compared to the common dielectric multilayer antireflection stack, the composite coating presents excellent AR performance. The measured average reflectance values of the double-side coated BK7 glass are as low as 0.40%, 0.41%, 0.56% and 3.13% in 400-1100nm band at angles of incidence (AOI) of 6°, 20°, 40°, and 60°, respectively, while the measured average transmittance at normal incidence increases up to 99.3%. Finally, the process reproductivity, environmental reliability test including long term storage, high temperature annealing and 85°C-85% relative humidity storage of the composite coatings are evaluated. The proposed AR scheme provides a low-cost, efficient, wide-angle and broadband AR coating for kinds of large-curvature components and complex surfaces in fields of consumer electronics, automotive, security, etc.

Abstract:Trimethylamine (TMA), TiCl4, and water are applied as the precursors to deposit Al2O3 and TiO2. With different substrate temperatures, the optical properties and surface morphologies of the two oxides TiO2 and SiO2 are studied, respectively. With substrate temperature of 120 oC, amorphous TiO2 can be obtained, and the surface roughness (RMS) is only 0.928 nm. Applying Al2O3 and TiO2 deposited in 120 oC as low and high refractive index materials, anti-reflection (AR) coating at single point (550 nm) is designed. Furthermore, with the calibrated growth rates, this AR coating is fabricated, and its ultimate reflectance for the AR coating at 550 nm is less than 0.2%, which can meet the requirement for most applications.

Abstract:Anti-laser damage has become a major concern because of the rapid evolution of high power continuous-wave laser technology. While phenolic matrix composite coatings exhibit good anti-laser property, they show low reflectivity during laser irradiation, resulting in high energy absorption. A novel composite coating that consists of Al(OH)3 and nano-copper fillers with phenolic resin matrix has been designed to solve the low reflectivity problem. X-ray diffraction reveals that Al2O3 particles generate on the surface of the coating during laser irradiation because of the dehydration reaction of Al(OH)3. The endothermic effect of this dehydration reaction and the transpiration of nano-copper particles have a significant cooling effect on the coating. The reflectivity of coating is monitored in real time during laser irradiation. It is confirmed that the reflectivity gradually increases with the accumulation of Al2O3 particles. According to the temperature of back-surface substrates, the improved reflectivity does lead to a better anti-laser property of the coating. The laser ablation behavior of the composite coating was studied in detail through different laser parameters. The results show that both laser power density and irradiation time have effect on the micro-morphologies and reflectivity of the coating.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Porous nanostructures on BK7 glass manufactured by chemical treatment are able to function as antireflection (AR) components over a wide spectral range and have potential to achieve high laser damage resistance. The damage-resistant properties of antireflective porous glasses with nearly 100% transmittances exposed to pulse lasers with three different central wavelengths were investigated in this paper. The laser damage tests showed that the LIDTs under the irradiation of 12ns 1064nm pulses, 10ns 532nm pulses and 8ns 355nm pulses are 58J/cm2, 20J/cm2 and 12J/cm2, respectively. These values are much higher than those of AR coated glasses, but are almost the same level of un-etched substrate. To understand possible damage mechanisms, the role of electric field distribution inside the porous structure during the laser radiation process was investigated by a three-dimensional finite difference time-domain method. The temperature distribution resulting from the internal electric field may be a main factor to induce the damage. In addition, the involved defects during the etching process are also responsible for the damage in the porous structure. Finally, some possible approaches to improve the LIDT are proposed.

Abstract:Mono-layer silica-based antireflective laser coating with modulated structure has been designed and fabricated, in which cross-linking network structure of polysiloxane was prepared as backbone and porous silica spheres (PSSs) were inserted to create interior porosity. Cured polysiloxane provided dense structure that could both prevent the invasion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and improve the mechanical property of this coating, while PSSs endowed this coating with proper porosity to adjust its refractive index and relax the high-power laser energy. With certain structure modulation, excellent transmission and laser-damage resistance of this coating at 355 nm (for the application in high-power laser system) and 1064 nm (for the application in laser-guided component) was both achieved. Meanwhile, the hardness of this coating increased significantly compared with that of the conventional porous silica coating. In addition, qualified VOCs endurance of this coating was also proved, which effectively extended the lifetime of such coating.

Abstract:Focusing on solving the adverse laser-inducing damage problem, high-power laser-resistant strategies have attracted more attention. In order to improve the laser-resistant property, a novel dynamic porous structure generation idea for laser irradiation was presented in this study, both of high-reflection and reaction endothermic effects. A detailed investigation on phase structure change, optical properties variation, micro-structure evolution, and substrate temperature development during laser irradiation was performed. The initial reflectivity of two coatings at 1064 nm was high, around 80–90%. During laser irradiation, the reflectivity grew continuously, reaching a maximum of 93%. During laser irradiation, a skeleton porous structure formed, promoted by the endothermic reaction of aluminum tri-hydroxide, whose structure contributes to the heat insulation from surface to interior. Thus, the prepared coating showed excellent anti-laser ablation performance, being dependent on its thermal insulation by the reaction-generated porous structure; high reflectivity by surface; and heat dissipation by endothermic reaction. Under 2000 W/cm2, 10 s laser irradiation (spot area is 10 mm × 10 mm), the back-surface temperature is just 159 °C, which is far away from the melting point of aluminum substrate. The coatings and strategy mentioned in this study have a great potential to be applied in the anti-laser field.

Laser damage of optical windows with random antireflective surface structures on both interfaces

Abstract:High average-power, nanosecond-duration, laser pulses induce damage on uncoated optics, due in part to an enhanced localized field at the exit surface of the components. Similarly, anti-reflection (AR) thin-film coated optics have similar field enhancement regions, due to multiple boundaries, and experience laser induced damage on both entry and exit interfaces. Sub-wavelength anti-reflection randomly structured surfaces (rARSS) have been shown to have a higher laser-induced damage threshold than traditional AR coatings. Previously published work detailed laser-induced damage on rARSS on a single surface of optical quality, planar, fused silica substrates; optimized for maximum transmission (99.5%) at 1064 nm. The present study explores the introduction of rARSS to both sides of the substrate. Laser-induced damage was systematically created and measured at contiguous locations along the substrate, using 1064 nm wavelength, 6-10 ns duration pulses. Laser output was focused to increase incident irradiance at the initial interface. Incident fluence was directly controlled by Q-switching the laser to create fluence values at, and above, damage thresholds for both entry and exit sides. It was determined that double-sided rARSS substrates have a higher damage threshold than thin-film AR coatings, while they have a lower damage threshold than entrance-only and exit-only sided rARSS (previous study), as well as, lower damage threshold than plain, optical quality, uncoated, fused silica. Damage on the exit-side of the substrate was ballistic in nature, showing surface cracks and outward-oriented debris craters. Contrastingly, damage on the entry-side of the substrate was thermally-induced local-densification of random structures with a latent footprint.

Abstract:The results of antireflection thin film systems for single crystal CaF2 and silicon windows for application at DF laser wavelengths have been present in this paper. The method designing multilayer AR coatings structure has been analyzed, and single layer, double layer and five layer AR coatings have been given with materials ZnSe/YbF3 combination and ZnS/YbF3 combination. The theoretical performances evaluated for various coatings. The deposition process has been developed in this paper. The experimental results with transmittance more than 99. 54% and 99. 89% AR coated CaF2 and silicon windows obtained. The damage threshold is more than 4. 3kW/cm2 at continue wave DF laser wavelength region for AR coated CaF2 windows.

Abstract:High-energy lasers can cause severe damage to conventional materials in an extremely short time. Highly reflective coatings are effective against damage, but they cannot withstand high laser power densities. In this study, a composite coating with two characteristics, namely, reflection and energy consumption, was designed and prepared. TiO 2 and BN powders, as light reflective media, were introduced into a boron-modified phenolic resin (BPF) to prepare an anti-laser composite coating. The results show that the initial reflectivity of the composite coating can reach 78.8% at a wavelength of 1064 nm. After damage-free protection for 0.4 s, ablation occurred in the irradiation region. Owing to the formation of residual char, which is the pyrolysis product of BPF, the coating maintained its protective performance. When the composite coating was irradiated at 1000 W/cm 2 for 10 s, the back-surface temperature was 186 °C, which indicates decent anti-laser performance. We also studied the role of BN by setting a control experiment. The high conductivity and energy consumption caused by the evaporation of B 2 O 3 , which is the oxidation product of BN, helped in improving the anti-laser performance. The residual char with high porosity and degree of graphitization proved to be effective to isolate laser energy. This study provides a new design for protection of conventional materials against laser damage.

Abstract:High-energy continuous wave (CW) laser ablation can cause severe damage to structural materials in an extremely short time, which generates considerable concern in terms of material safety. For the purpose of reducing or even eliminating such laser-induced damage, a novel composite coating consisting of a boron-modified phenolic formaldehyde resin incorporating ZrC and SiC has been designed and prepared. The experimental results reveal that ZrC and SiC are rapidly oxidized to ZrO2 and SiO2 respectively, leading to the formation of a white ceramic layer consisting of ZrO2 particles and melted SiO2. After ablation at 1000 W/cm2 for 50 s, elemental analysis indicates that no Si can be found in the central ablation zone because of gasification. A relatively compact ZrO2 layer is formed through the sintering of adjacent ZrO2 particles, which effectively improves the reflectivity of the coating from 7.3% (before ablation) to 63.5% (after ablation). The high reflectivity greatly reduces the absorption of laser energy. In addition, no obvious ablation defects are observed in the composite coating. The excellent anti-laser ablation performance of the coating makes it a promising system for protecting a material against the effects of long-term CW laser ablation.

Abstract:HfO2/SiO2 bilayer coatings and multilayer high-reflection coatings without and with a modified co-evaporated interface (MCEI) have been prepared. An MCEI is designed to be evaporated at an oxygen-deficient environment to achieve higher absorption than the conventional discrete interface. Capacitance-voltage measurements and absorption measurements demonstrate that an MCEI increases the trap density and leads to higher absorption. The laser-induced damage threshold and nano-indenter test results indicate that the MCEI multilayer coating exhibits better laser resistance and mechanical property, despite the larger absorption. The experimental results suggest that adhesive force between layers plays a more important role in nanosecond laser damage resistance than interface absorption.

Abstract:Antireflection (AR) coatings are essential to the performance of optical systems; without them, surface reflections increase significantly at steep angles and become detrimental to the functionality. AR coatings apply to a wide range of applications from solar cells and laser optics to optical windows. Many times, operational conditions include high temperatures and steep angles of incidence (AOIs). The implementation of AR coatings is extremely challenging in these conditions. Nanoporous coatings made from high-temperature-tolerant materials offer a solution to this problem. The careful selection of materials is needed to prevent delamination when exposed to high temperatures, and an optimal optical design is needed to lower surface reflections at both the normal incidence and steep AOIs. This paper presents nanoporous silicon dioxide and hafnium dioxide coatings deposited on a sapphire substrate using oblique angle deposition by electron beam evaporation, a highly accurate deposition technique for thin films. Developed coatings were tested in a controlled temperature environment and demonstrated thermal stability at temperatures up to 800°C. Additional testing at room temperature demonstrated the reduction of power reflections near optimal for AOIs up to 70° for a design wavelength of 1550 nm. These findings are promising to help extend the operation of technology at extreme temperatures and steep angles.

Abstract:The damage mechanism and application between intense pulsed laser and non-metallic materials have been regarded as the research hotspot in recent years. The ceramic materials have the advantages of high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, good chemical stability and high temperature mechanical properties, and insensitivity of bonding strength to high temperature. Therefore, ceramics are considered to be a good choice for laser-resistant materials. In this paper, the damage topography and anti-damage properties of high absorption ceramic coatings induced by pulsed laser at different energy densities are investigated from macro and micro levels. Then, combined with the experimental results of absorptivity, the lower limit of damage threshold (better than 8J/cm2) for the ceramic coatings is obtained. Finally, the main factors affecting the pulsed laser resistance of ceramic coatings are discussed. The results of this study can lay an important experimental foundation for the further research on the damage mechanism of intense pulsed laser and ceramic coating materials.
ArF laser-induced damage of calcium fluoride windows with protected anti-reflection coatings

Abstract:High-power ArF lasers for high-volume production of mobile consumer microelectronics demand low loss and laser durable calcium fluoride (CaF2) laser-windows. Increased laser durability is realized by F-SiO2 protective coatings on CaF2 windows with subsurface-damage-free (SSD-free) surface finishing. Surface reflection loss is reduced by fluoride-based anti-reflection (AR) coatings. In this contribution, we integrated the protective coating with the fluoride-based AR coatings on SSD-free CaF2 windows and assessed the laser damage resistance of the window using an ArF laser with a pulse length of 20 ns and a rep rate of 20 Hz. Damage initiation sites were detected on the entrance surface at a fluence of 3.5 J / cm2. A 100% damage probability was determined at a fluence of 5 J / cm2. An absorption-driven thermal damage mechanism was indicated by the damage morphology. Similar laser damage resistance was realized on the protected AR-coated windows with more than 9% transmission gain when compared to that of the F-SiO2 protected CaF2 laser-windows. The results suggest that two-photon absorption is a dominant factor when nonlinear absorption occurs in the laser-irradiated CaF2 windows. The thermally induced damage could be further simulated using the experimentally determined two-photon absorption coefficient based on the ArF laser calorimetry technique.
