Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:Poetics was compiled by Confucius'disciples who have attended his lectures on Poetry. Most prob ably it should be Zi Xia according to relative reference books. Dwelling upon th is problem now, one can discern that though there is ideological inheritance amo ng Poetics, Preface to Poetry, and Mao Zhuan , there is considerable difference, especially regarding to Guan Ju and other six articles. Instead of being written by Zi Xia himself,Preface to Poetry is the product of the systematic research on Poetry starting from Zi Xia. Nevertheless, both Preface to Poetry and Mao Zhuan represent similarities with Poetics, which is of great importance for us to recognize the inh eritance of Poetics study.

Abstract:Liu xizai is a famous writer in literary criticism in late Qing Dynasty,whose book The Sum of Literature gives a high and correct evaluation of Li bai's poems and is quite creative.This is exhibited in these aspects: the origin of Li bai 's poems can be traced back to Zhuang and Sao;Li bai had great ambitions and wanted to assist a ruler in governing a country,but his poems often represent the opposition;his words have proper limits in essence;Li bai's poems have elegant content and rhythm and besides,he often has Promethean verses.

Abstract:Recently unearthed documents have opened new opportunities for research into the poetry of the Tang Dynasty. The newly discovered documents offer the potential for extensive research into the poets during this dynasty,such as Cui Hao' s appointed official position,Han Yu' s friends,and the position of Miao Fa within his family. Wrong information from the poets' biographies,as described in the official history books,can be corrected with this new information. With the discovery of these documents,research into the poetry of the Tang Dynasty can be expanded.

Abstract:Comparative poetics studies has currently become the mainstream of comparative literature studies in China and Chinese context.The comparative poetics scholars,employing the perspectives of Western hermeneutics and related theories as their academic references to study Chinese Confucian poetics,are in fact standing in the position of the third kind of poetics which integrates Chinese and Western poetics and makes something new.As Liu Xin(ca.50 B.C.-23 A.D.)'s earlier defining of "Jing" in the Triple Concordance Calendar(Santong Li),"Jing is the First and the One which governs the beginning," that is,an ontological notion.Compared with "Tao" in the poetics of Laozi and Zhuangzi,"Jing" is a hidden ontological category which serves as the root of Confucian poetics.Therefore,it is only through the belief in "Jing"that Confucian intellectuals can confirm the significance and value of the Way of the Sage.In the essay entitled "Confucianism"(Ru Shu) in 1934,Lu Xun(1881-1936) satirized Yuan Haowen and Zhang Dehui(1195—1275) who honored Borjigin Kublai(1215—1294),the Grand Progenitor of the Yuan Dynasty as "Grand Confucian Master." However,in the 21st century,Confucianism has gone global as a universal belief.Compared to the real Confucians,the Gong Yang scholars who employed the Confucian classics to discuss politics,the greatest regret of the contemporary Chinese academia is the lack of interventional public intellectuals.

Abstract:In the earlier ancient times of China,the consanguineous bond was very important in the political structure.When the ministers wanted to expostulate to the ruler,they always admonished frankly.In Shijing,there are a lot of verse written by the ministers.As immediate household of the sovereign,they admonished the sovereign with these poems."Dedicating the poems" and "Collecting the poems" are two modes of Shijing's intervening in politics.As the social structure changed,the consanguineous bond loosed,and the autocratic monarchy was strengthened,so admonishing frankly became more and more dangerous.Meanwhile,euphemistical expostulation was getting more and more encouraged.The Shijing study of Han dynasty came into being against this historical background,and formed the theory of"the expostulation of eulogizing and satirizing".This theory said that every poem must have something to do with certain historical and political background.Even those poems which had no intention of expostulating,were all explicated as expostulation as well.The theory of"the expostulation of eulogizing and satirizing" have a great effect upon the the subsequent practice of writing poetry and the poetic criticism.Probing the process of how this theory came into being from a political historical standpoint,will be of positive significance to us to understand the Chinese ancient poetry better.

Abstract:This essay examines the Daoist metaphysical masters’ hermeneutic misreading of the Confucian classics during the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Applying the concept of misreading as the theoretical guideline, we will first analyze the three important supporting columns of Confucian literary theory: the importance of virtue/morality, the authority of literary sages and the ontology of the classics, and then we will examine the metaphysical masters’ subversion of the Confucian classics by misreading with their Daoist literary theory and concepts. In their hermeneutic misreading of the Confucian classics, the metaphysical masters in fact fused the original concepts of the Confucian classics with their contemporary Daoist hermeneutics, and the result of such a fusion is that the original meanings as the signified parted from the signifiers—the texts of the classics themselves—and were turned into repositories of contemporary Daoist meanings. In such a hermeneutic misreading, the Daoist theorists forced the Confucian theory and its ontology to gloomily withdraw from the cultural center, and gradually took the spotlight on the historical stage of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. In their open attitudes and flexible system, the metaphysical theorists constructed an age of enlightenment for the development of literary theory. With their hermeneutic misreading, the metaphysical literary theorists indeed broke through the world of Confucianism, won the right of expression, and voluntarily moved toward the self-fulfillment of their own system in the Wei and Jin Dynasties.

Abstract:Women's poetics in Qing Dynasty is one of the blind spots in the study field of Chinese ancient literary theory.But actually,it is a new important development in the history of Chinese ancient literary theory.Influenced by the new thoughts,some women critics reexplained the Confucious culture on woman literature,broke through the spiritual imprison that limited women's literary talents,legitimated the women's writing.Yet they could not thoroughly give up the severe conventional morality,their poetics showed the high moral self-disciline,avoided revealing their special gender identity in their poetry.Some women critics participated in the discussions on the basic poetic ideas,and made some changes in women poetics in late Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed the excavation of a large quantity of bamboo and silk documents in relation to pre-Qin thoughts and society.Accordingly,steady progress has also been made in this regard.As earlier discussions focused on character,gloss and text annotations,we deem it ripe time to avail of the present research to enrich the writing of intellectual history,and to reveal the theoretical meaning underlying the materials.For this purpose,we have invited a few scholars to examine the pre-Qin intellectual world as reflected in bamboo and silk documents either from the macro view of text-thought interactions,the micro view of theoretical construction,schools of thought and their evolution pertaining to a particular kind of classics,or from the methodological view.Professor Ding Sixin from the School of Philosophy at Wuhan University asserts that we can gain a glimpse of the evolution of earlier "texts" and their interaction with "thoughts" from the bamboo and silk versions of Lao Tzu:The Eternal Tao Te Ching and I Ching(The Book of Changes) excavated over the past 40 decades,as well as the evolution and characteristics of these two kinds of text from the Pre-Qin period through to the late Western Han dynasty.Lao Tzu has undergone far more substantial textual changes than I Ching,which has retained relative consistency and stability in the course of textual transcription.We should strengthen the understanding of their textual character and reflect on our academic ideas and achievements.Professor Wang Bo from the Department of Philosophy at Peking University believes that there existed some specific documents interpreting The Book of Odes,such as Wu Xing(Five Elements),Confucian Poetics and Parents of the People during the Warring States period.These documents not only quoted and interpreted the characters and content in relation to The Book of Odes,but also developed the topic of mind,nature and feelings based on the characteristic of "poetry as a means of expressing one's thought and feelings," affirming and stressing the inseparability of mind/nature and rites.The proposition of the study of mind is a necessary result of Confucian meditations on the reestablishment of rites and order.Professor Cao Feng from the Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University ascertains two theoretical clues running through the silk document of The Yellow Emperor's Four Canons excavated from Mawangdui:the "Lao Tzu-style discussions on Tao and politics" and the "emperor-style discussions on Tao and politics." Although such a model cannot be readily used to analyze the still earlier bamboo works on the thought of Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu,such as The Great One Gives Birth to Water,Heng Xian,Three Moralities and Fanwu Liuxing(When the Forms of All Things Become Animate),there exist close relations between later literature and the two types of discussions on Tao and politics,indicating a possibility of further evolvement.Professor Liang Tao from the School of Chinese Classics at Renmin University of China notes that the application of dual attestation to recent research on excavated documents has far exceeded that in Wang Guowei's period.It is used both for an explanation and attestation of ancient history and for a suspicion and discrimination of ancient history.And the diachronic study of unearthed materials and printed materials is more similar to Ku Chieh-kang's "only pursuing its changes." Therefore,the "prototype-meaning evolution theory" not only admits that historical records have their "origins" or "prototypes," but also recognizes the distortions and twists arising from the inheritance,while trying to offer a possible explanation for such evolution.

Abstract:Xunzijiaoshi(荀子校释) provides precise and appropriate annotations to Xunzi(荀子).It compiled and revisited the previous research available both within and without the country,dissolved doubts and problems and offered insightful opinions of the text of Xunzi.Nevertheless,little omissions and small errors are inevitable.Five mistakes are analyzed in this article: qi(齐) in heqi(和齐)shall not be pronounced differently;Shuai(率) has been mispronounced twice;Juan(蠲) in juanyi(蠲疑) is a borrowed character of ■,She(埶) in shezaibenchao shall be pronunced as she(设),and aishe(隘慑) is identical to dianai(垫隘) in Zuo.

Abstract:The Confucian Analects or Lunyu has had many translations in the English-speaking world, yet Confucius still largely remains a vague, distant, unattractive, and at times confusing figure for the Western reader. It is both necessary and possible to change this situation. This article reviews the limited progress so far in translating Confucius, examines the remaining problems, and suggests some possible remedies. It concludes that translating the Analects is a sophisticated task that requires the translator to juggle demands from both philosophy and literature. To do this, the translator has to be equipped with literary sensibilities, philosophical insight, a thorough understanding of the Confucian text, a grasp of the syntactical differences between English and Classical Chinese, and a sensitivity to style and nuances of meaning.
A Review of Seopa(西陂) Yuhui(柳僖)'s Works on “Shangshu尙書”

Abstract:This paper is to sort out the content and explore the characteristics of the three research works on “Shangshu” of Yuhui (柳僖, 1773-1837), a Confusion scholar in the late Joseon Dynasty. ShinChak(申綽), a famous scholar of textual research in the late Joseon Dynasty, mentioned in a letter to ChongYak-Yong(丁若鏞) that Yuhui’s textual research on “Guwen Shangshu古文尙書” was meticulous and detailed. He also praised Yuhui's very high attainment in interpreting “Chunqiu 春秋” in “Taegyosingi胎敎新記序”. However, as Yuhui’s works on Confucian classics were not included in several famous Korean series such as “The Complete Collection of the Korean Study of Confucian Classics韓國經學資料集成”, “Korean Literary Collections in Classical Chinese韓國文集叢刊”, “Korean Anthology in History韓國歷代文集叢書”, and they were not published in separate volumes, they have received little attention from the academic circles. Based on “Yuhui Chronicle”, Yuhui's personal notes and many other clues, this paper first speculates that Yuhui's publications should have the following sequence: firstly “SangSeoKoGeummoonSongEui尙書今古文訟疑”(1824), then “SeoChaejeonboseol書蔡傳補說”(presumably written between 1824-1825), to be followed by “SeoGo書詁”(written after August 1825). In addition, his “Shangshu” theory has the following characteristics and significance: 1. Analysis based on textual research: In the debate on ancient prose, if ChongYak-Yong is compared to Yan Ruoqiu(閻若璩), Yuhui can be compared to Mao Qiling(毛奇齡). The reason is that those who supported the ancient text “Shangshu” in the Joseon Dynasty mostly refuted the study of school examination because of the sixteen-character mentality. They think analysing the classics through textual research is like “trusting the leaves and query the root” and is a waste of effort. However, Yuhui’s method of analysing classics was different from that of the predecessors. He adopted textual research, going through systematically the historical records of the past dynasties and the theories of the predecessors one by one. At the same time, Yuhui often cited Mao Qiling's theory as his own supporting evidence, which is very different from the previous Korean scholars who belittled Xihe. 2. Interpreting the classics through linguistics: Due to innate factors, Korean Confucianists seldom used the convenience of geographical location to discuss the authenticity of the ancient “Shangshu” like the Ming and Qing scholars who adopted the methods of geographical research and ancient and modern phonetics. Instead, they defended the ancient text “Shangshu”. based on viewpoints such as “the words of the sages are inviolable”, “as Zhu Zi never said this is a fake book, it must be authentic”, “the meaning is correct, so it is not a fake book”. In addition to Yuhui's method of textual research to affirm his own views, it can also be seen that Yuhui used his expertise in Guoyinxue to explain the classics. For example, on the issue of Fu Sheng's dictation of the classics, Yuhui not only pointed out that similar characters might have caused errors, but also cited examples of errors caused by sounds. 3. Revising and supplementing “Shu Ji Zhuan書集傳”: Although “Shu Ji Zhuan” has been standing for hundreds of years since the Yuan Dynasty, there have been views of support and opposition since its compilation at the end of the Song Dynasty. Yuhui's “SeoChaejeonboseol” and “SeoGo” show that Korean Confucianists did not completely stick to the “Shu Ji Zhuan” which represents Zhu Xi's last will and would also identify the mistakes and suggest amendments to the text when the meaning was not clear. 4. Compilation of lost merits: Many ancient theories are quoted in the three works, such as those of Ma Qianluan馬遷鸞 from the Song Dynasty and Li Pan李槃 from the Ming Dynasty, which is very rare. Abstract:In the process of discussing Han-Liu's theory of ancient prose,relevant scholars have always concentrated upon "Prose throws light on truth(the Tao)",whereas they have tended to take an isolated view of such sayings as "Forceful writings include proper words","Injustice provokes outcry",and "One writes for fun just as one plays games".This paper points out that Han-Liu's theory of ancient prose includes a structure of one as the principal and three as the subordinate: "Prose throws light on truth" is the principal thing,while the other three sayings are subordinate.Owing to the existence of the norm,Han-Liu's vigorous writings,injustice and amusement will not lose their correct direction.On the other hand,combined with the other three,Han-Liu's Tao can translate Confucian Tao into literary Tao,thus turning Tao into literature.This coordinating structure not only renders Han and Liu distinct from ordinary Confucian scholars in literary norms,but also makes it possible that their essays possess both social and individual features,that they brim with both ideas and feelings,and that they show both realistic functions and aesthetic delight.In this way,they created such brilliant ancient prose as hitherto unkown,thus accomplishing the historical mission of getting ancient prose popular again.
