Abstract:This chapter discusses economic risk assessment for field development. An offshore field development project generally consists of four main phases, that is, exploration, development, operation, and decommission. An illustration of the development phases, along with the main activities, the duration, and the cost of each phase, is presented. An exploration decision is like a major gamble: a large field may be discovered or, at the other extreme, no oil or gas found at all. This chapter discusses various phases such as background of economic evaluation and quantitative economic risk assessment. This chapter covers the decision criteria and limit-state functions with the help of different subsections such as decision and decision criteria, economic risk modeling, income variable modeling and failure probability calculation. This chapter gives an idea on the results evaluation. It also describes importance and omission factors. The use of the omission factors is illustrated by studying the well predrilling cost. The sensitivity factors and contingency factors are also described. The contingency factors depend on the probability level, that is, the confidence in achieving the desired event. A quantitative economic risk assessment methodology is presented in this chapter. It is a generalization of various published economic risk studies. The probabilistic analysis, however, can provide a consistent calibration of contingency factors for any desired confidence level.
