Abstract:A poly(aniline-co-pyrrole), using anionic spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (ASPB) as dopant and template, was synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrical studies. The SEM images confirmed that the composites had a spherical-like structure, with a size of ca. 170 nm. The FTIR spectra showed the intermolecular interaction between poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) and ASPB. The XRD analysis revealed that the interplanar distance of the copolymers increased from 0.373 nm to 0.391 nm. The electrical conductivity of the poly(aniline-co-pyrrole)/ASPB nanocomposites at room temperature was 8.3 S cm(-1), higher than that of the conducting copolymers (2.1 S cm(-1)). These conductive nanocomposites have nanoparticle size, controllable morphology, and the potential for application in inkjet electronic printing. (C) 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers

Abstract:Aromatic polyesters bearing pendent carboxyl functionalities were prepared by interfacial polycondensation of diphenolic acid, bisphenol A and isophthaloyl chloride with tetrabutylammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst. The copolyester composition was confirmed with HPLC analysis. The polymerization process and composition of the copolyesters were examined by considering influences of reaction temperatures, time, ratio of feeds, agitation speeds.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:Two series of novel side-chain-acid poly(arylene ether)s bearing aliphatic-chain-linked sulfophenyl pendants are synthesized by direct polycondensation reactions derived from a new sulfonated difluoro-monomer, sodium 4-(3-(4-(2,6-difluorobenzoyl)phenoxy)propoxy)benzenesulfonate. The sulfonation content is readily controlled by adjusting the feed ratios of sulfonated and unsulfonated monomers. The obtained polymers exhibit considerably reduced dimensional swelling and good proton conductivities. It is found that the cyano-functionalized poly(arylene ether)s exhibit lower water uptake and dimensional swelling in comparison with the corresponding SPAE series. SPAEK-3 with an ion exchange capacity of 1.5mequivg−1 has proton conductivity of 0.12Scm−1 and water swelling ratio of only 26% at 100°C. Importantly, obvious hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase separation morphology is observed, which may be highly related with their good proton transport ability.

Abstract:New functional copolyether sulfones with pendant aldehyde groups were synthesized by the classical polycondensation reaction between 4,4' -dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (I) and various bisphenols such as 5,5'-methylene bis-salicylaldehyde (II-2), 2,2-bis( 4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (III), and 2,6-bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene)cyclohexanone (IV). Condensation reaction with 4-aminophenol led to pendant phenolic azomethine groups containing copolyether sulfones. The structures of the resulting polymers were confirmed by IR, H-1-NMR spectra, and elemental analyses. The polymers were characterized by reduced viscosity, solubility, thermal stability, DSC, and x-ray diffraction measurements.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:Comb-like polyamides bearing different contents of tetraaniline pendant groups were synthesized via nucleophilic polymerization coupled with a post-functionalization method, and exhibit excellent solubility, good thermal stability and interesting spectroscopic properties. Their electronic properties, including conductivity, dielectricity, electroactivity, electrochromism and anticorrosion, were effectively adjusted and controlled by importing different numbers of tetraaniline pendant groups.

Abstract:Disodium 2,2'-di(sulfopropyloxy)-biphenyl as a novel sulfonated aromatic diarene monomer has been facilely synthesised via one-step etherification in high yield and successfully applied in polyacylation under mild conditions for the first time. Proton-exchange membranes of the resulting side-chain-type sulfonated aromatic polyketones exhibit proton conductivity higher than Nafion (R) while maintaining a low swelling ratio, which may be ascribed to the microstructure of Nafion-like ionic clusters as observed by atomic force spectrometry. This work demonstrates that polyacylation directly from pre-ionised monomers offers a novel and powerful tool to advanced aromatic proton-exchange polyelectrolytes for fuel cells.

Abstract:Multifunctional hyperbranched polymers have found wide applications in diverse areas. However, the preparation of these polymers is generally under harsh polymerization conditions with limited reactions. In this work, we prepared multifunctional hyperbranched poly(vinylene sulfide)s (hb-PVSs) by our established efficient and spontaneous thiol-yne click polymerization for the first time. A series of hb-PVSs with high molecular weights (M-w up to 63100) were obtained in high yields (up to 86%) from the polymerizations of monomers 1 and 2 with equivalent molar ratio in THF at 20 degrees C for 2 h. All the hb-PVSs are regioregular, soluble, and thermally stable. Thanks to the unreacted ethynyl groups on their peripheries, the hb-PVSs could be facilely functionalized by consecutive thiol-yne click reactions. Moreover, the solid films of hb-PVSs exhibit higher refractive index (RI) values (n > 1.64) than those of traditional optical plastics. The TPE-containing hb-PVS shows unique aggregation-enhanced emission characteristic and its aggregates could be used to detect explosives with superamplification effect. Therefore, this work not only proves the universality of our developed spontaneous thiol-yne click polymerization but also provides a powerful and versatile platform for the preparation of multifunctional sulfur-containing polymers.

Abstract:Two novel poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with high biphenylene content (BDS‐PES and BDS‐PDBES) are prepared by the nucleophilic substitution polymerization of the synthesized 4,4′‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)diphenyl sulfone(BDS) with 4,4′‐sulfonylbis‐(fluorobenzene) and 4,4‐bis[(4‐chlorophenyl)sulfonyl] respectively. The prepared polymers show high glass transition temperature and excellent high‐temperature mechanical properties. The Tg of BDS‐PDBES with higher biphenylene content is as high as 300°C, and BDS‐PDBES can still maintain its 30% storage modulus at 295°C. In addition, the two novel polymers also show excellent thermal stability (Td5 = 526°C), high elongation at break (ε ≈ 20%), good tensile strength(73 MPa) and modulus(1.73 GPa), and good thermal conductivity (λT = 300°C = 0.28 W·(m·K)−1).This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A novel poly(ether sulfone) with oligoaniline pendants(PESOP) was prepared by K 2 CO 3 -mediated nucleophilic polycondensation and characterized with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance( 1 H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). The cyclic voltammetry(CV) curve of PESOP reveals the reversible electroactivity. In the electrochromism study, PESOP film exhibited good electrochromic properties with a high contrast value, moderate switching time and acceptable coloration efficiency. After running 1000 cycles, the PESOP/indium-tin oxide(ITO) electrochromic device remained unchanged except for the drifting of base line, which certified its good electro-photo stability of the fabricated electrochromic device. Moreover, the polarization technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were used to study the anticorrosion performance of PESOP coatings on the cold rolled steel(CRS) in a 5%(mass fraction) NaCl solution. All the results indicate that the obtained PESOP is a competitive candidate as anticorrosion material.

Abstract:We demonstrate the facile synthesis of a new type of precision polymers containing periodically placed perfluoroalkyl segments and sulfonic acid groups via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of designed diene monomers and the subsequent postmodification of the internal C=C bonds. Two diene monomers containing perfluoroalkyl segments [-(CF2)(n)-, n=4 and 6] were synthesized through the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of dodecafluoro-1, 6-diiodohexane and octafluoro-1, 4-diiodobutane with 1,5-hexadiene and the subsequent deiodination. ADMET polymerization of these two monomers with Grubbs-I catalyst led to periodic polymers containing perfluoroalkyl segments and internal C=C bonds. Subsequent postpolymerization modification with thiolacetic acid and the following oxidation with hydrogen peroxide afforded the final polymers. The polymers were characterized by NMR, GPC, and FTIR, and the thermal properties of the final copolymers were investigated by DSC and TGA. These polymers exhibited high thermal stability as compared to other precisely sulfonated polyethylene analogues; therefore, they may be potentially investigated as efficient proton transport membranes.

Abstract:A series of poly (aryl ether sulfone) containing different contents of amino groups (ABPFx) were synthesized by nucleophilic polycondensation reaction. The ABPFx has excellent thermal resistance with the T g reaching 277 °C as well as maintains good mechanical and film-forming properties. In particularly, the ABPF10 membrane exhibits high gas permeability [P (H 2 ) = 22.24 Bar] and gas selectivity [α (H 2 /N 2 ) = 63.5]. Consequently, the ABPFx membranes have potential application value in the field of gas separation for hydrogen separation.

Abstract:A series of polysulfide-based polyureas with different siloxane contents were synthesized, and they were based on isophorone diisocyanate, liquid polysulfide oligomer, aminoethylaminopropyl poly(dimethyl siloxane) (AEAPS), and 2,5-diamino-3,6-dimethylmercapto-toluene. The mechanical and surface properties were investigated with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface contact angles, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and stress-strain analysis. Siloxane was enriched on the surfaces of these elastomers, and the tensile properties of the elastomers did not change markedly with the AEAPS modification. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The polysilaether polymers bearing Si–H bonds (PSEHs) were synthesized using Wurtz coupling reaction of dichlorosilanes, mediated by alkali metals, after alcoholysis, the reactant was further hydrolyzed and polycondensation. The Si–H bonds in the macromolecular side chains provide tremendous potentials to prepare a variety of functionalized polysilaethers via hydrosilylation. In this work, the functionalization of PSEHs was carried out via hydrosilylation with acrylic acid and the functionalized derivative was characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and thermal analysis. It is noted that both PSEHs and the functionalized derivative polymer displayed the characteristics of ultraviolet (UV) absorption and photoluminescence. The functionalized polymers show a considerable blue shift (∼325nm) and red shift (∼390nm) in comparison with the starting polymer, which provides the potential to obtain some tunable optoelectronic properties via the structural modifications of PSEHs.
